Step 3 Exam & Prep Experience
As we all await the match day, I thought I would share with you my recent step 3 exam experience. My results arrived today and I score higher than I initially expected. I’ll start with the exam structure. As you all know, Step 3 exam is a 2-day exam. The first day is made up of 7 1hr blocks of inpatient and outpatient clinical questions while the next day is made of 4 45mins blocks of inpatient and outpatient clinical questions plus 12 Clinical Case Simulations. The first day, was a typical Step 2 CK exam! The only difference was that the questions tended to be longer and the questions were divided into inpatient and ou...

DO/DO close to home vs MD/DO across the country
My fiancee and I are having a hard time deciding whether or not to relocate across the country for medical school. We are both from N. California. We have both been accepted to Touro-CA (DO), while I have been accepted to Florida International University (MD) and she has been accepted to Nova Southeastern (DO). While I realize we are very fortunate to have any acceptances at all, this decision is nervewracking! While Touro is probably in the lower quartiles of DO schools, FIU is only graduating their first class this year, costs about 100k/yr for an OOS student (though my parents will foot most of this bill), has prosec...

Boston programs
Long time lurker! Currently trying to make my ROL. I definitely want to be in Boston as my wife has a job here and can't move. I think Tufts is a less strong program and so I'll be putting it at number 3 although there were things I liked on interview day. I don't know how to rank MGHfC and BCRP. They're clearly very different but both appeal in different ways. I want to end up in academic pulmonology and I'd see myself wanting to do fellowship at one of the big academic centers. Pros and cons for residency ROL: MGHfC: Very friendly and seemed supportive. Big emphasis on training strong general pediatricians. Very few ...

Psych to pediatrics
I discovered that I liked psychiatry relatively late last year which came as a surprise because I had been devoted to doing pediatrics all through med school. I decided to apply to psychiatry and have interviewed at some great programs. However, after doing more electives this year, I've realized that I should have applied to pedi. I still enjoy psych but pedi is a better fit and I think it will make me happier in the long run. So my dilemma is what to do about match. I feel somewhat bad that if I rank I am taking a spot from someone who would stay in the program. I approached my pedi advisor about SOAPing and they have st...

Necessary to have F1 Paeds rotation to get into Paediatric Specialty Training?
How important is it to get an F1 placement in Paeds to be successful in getting into Paediatric Specialty Training later? There are very few positions offered in my first choice deanery that have Paeds rotations. I am wondering if it would be beneficial to rank F1 positions with Paeds rotations high, even if they are in places I would dread going to. Also, what should I do once I'm in F1 to enhance my chances if I do not get a Paeds rotation? Thanks! (Source: New Media Medicine)

DO Career opportunities, as seen from a concerned parent's perspective
Hello all, These are a few questions my dad, have put forth regarding DO physicians. Can anyone help me out? " From an engineering perspective: if you want to get a job in Google, generally people coming from very good schools/great qualifications are going to be hired. There’s always going to be a small % of people who don’t have top brand name educations, but most of the population comes from top schools. UCLA is UCLA, UCSF is UCSF and Duke is Duke. As such, the top hospitals (think Stanford Hospital) don’t hire DOs. Basically, these top hospitals say that DO physicians are not quality physicians. What are you...

I've now come back to 3rd year of med school and I've completed medicine, peds and I'm almost done with surgery and I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life. So far I've liked parts of everything. I loved the people I worked with on medicine and the problem solving. Lumbar Puncture in neonates
Hello, question about LPs in infants/neonates: I was reading an UptoDate article and found a nice algorithm, 'Management Algorithm for Infants (> 1 month) and children with suspected bacterial meningitis' (I wont post the graphic here per copyright issues, but I'm sure you've seen something similar). The algorithm states, basically, to watch out for intracranial processes . . .that if you suspect one, LP should be deferred until after a CT Head for further evaluation. That makes sense. My question is: how would this algorithm differ for a < 1 month old, with respect to getting a CT before the LP? In other words,...

Interesting last case this evening. Four year old child. Mum says he and his big sister ate balloons the day before. He ate two balloons and his big sister ate one. Mum found out when the 4yo vomited one for his two balloons up. That night the child complained of abdominal pain and the Mum took him to the local District general Hospital.. Medicine vs. Pediatrics
Hey guys, Wanted to ask your opinion on medicine vs. peds. I just recently finished both my medicine and peds rotations and they have been my favorite rotations thus far, but I wanted some advice, particularly from those who have gone through the process, of deciding between the two. I'm hoping to go into either adult heme/onc or peds heme/onc; I also am considering immunology and ID. Overall, I think that medicine is more interesting in terms of the analytical approach coming up with a differential but I generally like working more with kids. After thinking a lot about it, I've come up with the following assessment: ...

Paediatrics rotation as an FY1 or FY2?
Hi everyone, I am applying through FPAS for F1 next week. I am highly considering a career in Paediatrics so I would like one rotation in paediatrics at some point. However, I am unsure whether to apply for a paediatrics post for F1 or wait and try to get it as an F2. I would prefer a general medicine job as an F1 to gain experience, as I know on paediatrics I probably won't be able to do much - but on the other hand, I don't want to lose the opportunity of doing it as an F2 if there are no available jobs. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this? Thanks! :) (Source: New Media Medicine)

A Note To Peds Residency Applicants
A note to Peds residency applicants. If you have secured an interview date at a particular program and later decide not to interview there, please cancel your interview with that program as early as possible. I have heard that some interview dates at some programs are filling up quickly, creating a "wait list" for particular dates (or for getting an interview at all at that program). So cancelling early will free up that interview slot for someone else, hopefully in time for that applicant to make travel arrangements. And even if you decide to cancel at the last minute, let the programs know that you are not comi...

I'm 22 now (soon to be 23) and I feel like all my friends are getting on with their careers, and I'm stuck in limbo chasing the [near] impossible dream of Medicine as a non-Science Graduate. There are options for medicine abroad, but the thought of moving out to Bulgaria/Ukraine for 6 years isn't a nice one. As such, I think if I fail to get in this year, I'll apply for Paediatric Nursing, and attempt to return to Medicine in my early 30's with lots of experience behind me. Peds residencies that use EMR
I am currently considering what programs to apply to and my list is rather long! Since I probably would not want to go to a program that does not use EMR, is there someway to figure out whether or not the hospital uses EMR? I went online and it seems that they usually do not inform us, but I may be wrong. So it seems like one of the few ways to figure this out would be to contact the program coordinator, etc to figure out. Is there a problem with this or should I create anonymous email so they will not figure out who wrote it? and sorry if this has been answered already, I did a search and came up empty. thanks! Access to Medicine Course help - please!
Hello! This is my first message on here and I was wondering whether anyone could advise me on a couple of questions I have? Background info -I am 23. I have no previous experience in a clinical setting which is why I believe I did not get in to the course previously. I have however, cared for my partner for the last 2 years a...

This purely anecdotal, but with a vintage experience base, the few times I ever heard or was involved with was with pre-operative pediatric patients, for whom (Source: ekg_club at Yahoo! Groups)
