Association Between Transient Hypothyroxinaemia of Prematurity and Adult Autism Spectrum Disorder in a Low‐Birthweight Cohort: An Exploratory Study
ConclusionWhile the primary relation between THOP and ASD found here is not statistically significant, the magnitude of association and significant relationship observed in the subgroup whose mothers did not have hypertension during pregnancy suggest that it is worthy of further investigation. Risk Factors for Acute Respiratory Morbidity in Moderately Preterm Infants
ConclusionWe conclude that acute respiratory morbidity in moderately preterm infants is common and predicted by multiparity, caesarean section, low Apgar score and male sex. (Source: Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology)

The Impact of Neonatal Care Resources on Regional Variation in Neonatal Mortality Among Very Low Birthweight Infants in Korea
ConclusionsRegional disparity in mortality of VLBW infants in Korea is most marked in the lowest‐birthweight group, <750 g. This disparity is primarily due to lack of resources for neonatal intensive care in most of provincial areas. (Source: Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology)

Clustering of Neonatal Deaths in Bangladesh: Results From the Projahnmo Studies
ConclusionThe preceding sibling's outcome may be a surrogate for genetic and other maternal health factors such as nutrition, infection or environmental factors that were not measured within Projahnmo. Further research into these factors is required in order to explain the variation in the risk for NM. (Source: Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology)

Antibiotic Use in Newborns with Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn.
Conclusions: This study suggests that empiric postnatal antibiotic treatment may not be warranted for late preterm and term infants with TTN in the absence of specific infectious risk factors.

Brain injury following trial of hypothermia for neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy
Conclusions
Fewer areas of infarction and a trend towards more normal scans were noted in brain MRI following whole-body hypothermia. Presence of the NICHD pattern of brain injury is a marker of death or moderate or severe disability at 18–22 months following hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy. Characterization of placenta‐specific microRNAs in fetal growth restriction pregnancy
ConclusionOur data suggest that reduced expression in placenta of certain FGR placenta‐specific miRNAs is associated with FGR and that the discrepancy between expression in FGR placenta and their circulating levels in maternal plasma will be crucial to understanding how placenta‐specific microRNAs are released into the maternal circulation. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Local skin injury as a complication of whole body cooling for perinatal asphyxia
A female infant was born at term weighing 3160 g by spontaneous vaginal delivery. Apgar scores were 1 and 3 at 1st and 5th min, respectively. The baby underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Umblical artery pH was 6.9. She had Sarnat stage 2 encephalopathy. Therapeutic whole body hypothermia was induced soon after birth with a rectal temperature of 33–34°C, using a water-filled mattress (Tecotherm TecCom, Munich, Germany) and was continued throughout the 72 h period and afterwards the patient was warmed 0.5°C per hour up to 36°C. The lowest air temperature to achieve this rectal temperature was 28°C....

Rapid prenatal diagnosis of fetal Zellweger syndrome by biochemical tests, complementation studies, and molecular analyses
What's already known about this topic?
Neuronal migration disorders are caused by many genetic conditions. Zellweger syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive cause. Prenatal diagnosis can be performed in further pregnancies.
What does this study add?
We show that early prenatal diagnosis can be reached by biochemical testing in pregnancies at risk for ZSS, even when no definite diagnosis has been established in a previous pregnancy. ZSS should be considered in fetus presenting with lissencephaly and other specific congenital anomalies. (Source: Prenatal Diagnosis)

The discourse around usefulness, morality, risk and trust: a focus group study on prenatal genetic testing
ConclusionThe research shed some light on the frames of reference used by participants to build their positions on PGT uptake, confirming the public's ability to translate scientific accounts into personally meaningful information. A more complete understanding of the reasons for decisions to test would help counsellors to better communicate with women and couples, and to better assist them to make a better informed testing decision. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and nursing research . . . Oh my!
Abstract
Research is a word that evokes feeling of fear and dread in many nurses. Maybe its memories of the research course required in their nursing education program, hours spent in the library, or deciphering the statistics section in a research article. Most nurses want to focus on nursing skills and are unaware of the relationship between research and nursing care skills, such as administering medications, protecting skin integrity, or educating an anxious parent. Many nurses see research as distinct from patient care and nursing practice, but nothing is further from the truth. Quality nursing care is based on...

Skin Wound Healing and Scarring: Fetal Wounds and Regenerative Restitution
The adverse physiological and psychological effects of scars formation after healing of wounds are broad and a major medical problem for patients. In utero, fetal wounds heal in a regenerative manner, though the mechanisms are unknown. Differences in fetal scarless regeneration and adult repair can provide key insight into reduction of scarring therapy. Understanding the cellular and extracellular matrix alterations in excessive adult scarring in comparison to fetal scarless healing may have important implications. Herein, we propose that matrix can be controlled via cellular therapy to resemble a fetal‐like matrix that ...
