GlaxoSmithKline and Theravance Inc. will get a Food and Drug Administration decision by Dec. 18 on their experimental treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
GSK and South San Francisco's Theravance (NASDAQ: THRX) said their FDA application for Anoro, previously known as UMEC/VI, was accepted by the agency. That sets the FDA's 10-month approval clock in motion.
Anoro, a once-a-day drug, is a combination of two bronchodilator molecules: GSK-573719, or UMEC or umeclidinium bromide, and…

The Novartis Board Insulted Shareholders With Hush Money For Dan Vasella
The battle over executive compensation took an unusual turn this week when Novartis responded to an outpouring of anger over a non-compete deal that would have given outgoing chairman Dan Vasella as much as $78 million over six years (see this). The board had originally justified its decision in order to "protect" the drugmaker, since Vasella knows "the company’s business intimately, having built the leading R&D organization and personally recruited most of the top executives." In other words, the payoff was hush money designed to keep him from telling secrets to competitors.

FiercePharma's Most Influential People: A Short History of Leadership
FiercePharma has released its second annual list of most influential people in biopharma, and it is tempting to look at the names and seek a pattern that can explain who did, or did not receive the honor. I hope nonetheless that this attempt can prompt insightful discussions on what is effective leadership in an industry poised for profound transformation.

Here Comes The Boom: CMS Slashes Medicare Advantage; 'Disarray For Many Seniors'
Though Democrats denied it during the 2012 campaign, Obamacare cut Medicare by $716 billion in order to partially fund $1.9 trillion in new entitlement spending over the next ten years. A big chunk of those Medicare cuts came from the market-oriented Medicare Advantage program. Cleverly, the Obama administration postponed the Medicare Advantage cuts until after the election, so as to persuade seniors that everything would be just fine. But the election is over. On Friday, the administration announced that it would be significantly reducing funding for the popular program. Obama's proposal, according to one analyst, “woul...

Looking for a Way to Reduce Medicare Spending? Look No Further than Part D
As it becomes clear the President Obama is making Medicare a key topic for discussion within the broader context of federal spending, Democrats and Republicans have an opportunity to pursue common-sense reforms that preserve the program while achieving bipartisan support for fixing what isn't working. Despite ongoing reservations, I believe that some parts of the Affordable Care Act can conceivably be implemented with minimal dislocation, but only if the right policies are embraced by the administration. And that’s why I think that the president is making a mistake in proposing potentially damaging changes to arguably th...

Vioxx and Diclofenac: Why Are Two Heart Risky Pain Drugs Viewed Differently?
More than a decade ago, Merck launched Vioxx (rofecoxib), one of the first of a new class of pain relievers known as COX-2 inhibitors. These compounds, by virtue of their mode of action, were deemed to be as potent arthritis pain relievers as traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen, but were believed to be safer than NSAIDs since they caused less gastrointestinal distress. Vioxx was an immediate success with physicians and patients. New prescriptions for Vioxx soared.
