On Wednesday May 22, 2013, CMS is hosting a town hall teleconference for physicians and teaching hospitals on the National Physician Payment Transparency Program (Open Payments).
The National Physician Payment Transparency Program (Open Payments) requires manufacturers of pharmaceuticals or medical devices to publically report payments made to physicians and teaching hospitals creating greater transparency around the financial relationships that occur among them.
This National Provider Call will give an overview of what CMS considers important to physicians (MD’s, DO’s, Dentists, Dental Surgeons, Optometrists, Podi...

Doctors' Dubious Excuses for Taking Pharmaceutical Companies' Money
This report, and its recommendations have gotten scant attention, maybe because they would threaten a status quo that enriches conflicted health professionals and the companies that create these conflicts. However, in my humble opinion, implementing all the report's recommendations would only be a beginning down the road of restoring the integrity of clinical care, teaching, and research. Fun With Injuries, Revised: Achilles Tendonitis.
"Is this related to diabetes, or is this purely a running thing?"I think the podiatrist guy could read my face, pleading for him to tell me this was simply a sports injury."I see a lot of runners coming in with this, especially those who are doing daily distance, and if you have even a mild pronation, Achilles tendonitis is very common." He paused. "And it's much more common in my diabetic patients, due to blood sugars and their effect on tendon health. Have you had issues with tendonitis before?"I thought back to just after Birdy was born. "I had issues with my wr...

Physician Payment Sunshine Act Final Rule: Definitions
Discussion
CMS provided clarification for some of the above definitions based on comments. First, CMS noted that for “applicable manufacturer,” they never intended to “capture foreign entities that may contribute to the manufacturing process of a covered product, but have no business presence in the United States.” However, “entities based outside the United States that do have operations in the United States are subject to the reporting requirements.”
CMS also clarified that “entities that have operations in the United States are not permitted to circumvent the reporting requirements by making paym...

Physician Payment Sunshine Act: Final Rule Top 50 Things to Know
The Physician Payment Sunshine Act final rule was released this past week. The final regulations will greatly affect the entire pharmaceutical and medical device industry. In general, the Sunshine Act requires applicable manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals, or medical supplies to report annually to the Secretary of HHS certain payments or other transfers of value to physicians and teaching hospitals. It also requires applicable manufacturers and applicable group purchasing organizations (GPOs) to report certain information regarding the ownership or investment interests held by physicians or the immediat...

Simple Steps Can Reduce Amputation Rate by Half
By Diane Fennell
Foot complications that lead to amputation are among the most feared consequences of uncontrolled diabetes. But according to researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, shoe inserts, podiatry (foot treatment), regular foot checkups, and information can reduce the number of amputations due to diabetes by 50%. More than half of all amputations in the United States are caused by diabetes complications.
The researchers have been studying diabetic foot complications since 2008, with a focus on protecting the foot sole from being overloaded in order to reduce the risk of ulcers, which can lead to a...

New to Diabetes: What's Next? (Part 1)
By Amy Campbell
Back in October, I posted a piece called "Getting Started With Type 2 Diabetes." My intent with that was to provide you with an overview of what to do when you're told you have diabetes (or what to do if you've had diabetes for a while but perhaps hadn't been ready to manage it).
Now that we're in a new year, I thought it might be helpful to expand upon that piece a bit. As you and I well know, taking care of your diabetes can seem like a full-time job, and if this is all new to you, it can be a bit bewildering trying to sort it all out. So in the spirit of new beginnings, this week I'll share a couple mor...

The Interest in Toning Shoes
I am starting to see some renewed interest in the toning shoes niche. These are the shoes with design features that are designed deliberately to make the shoe unstable. This instability make the muscles work harder, giving the so called tone up. Players in this market include the Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT), Skechers Shape Ups and the Reebok EasyTone. Gone are the early claims for these shoes (Source: Podiatry Update)

Podiatry EMR Helps to Advance Patient Care
Doctors who use Podiatry EMR software are advancing patient care and putting forth a blueprint for greater patient education. When it comes to a medical condition, it is important for patients to see, understand and fully comprehend the big picture. From Achilles tendonitis and bunions to gout, Diabetic foot and plantar fasciitis, it is believed there are over 60 common podiatry complaints. Podiatry EHR software makes educating patients on foot care and prevention plans easier. In fact, some podiatry complaints come with a high risk of developing ulcers and infections, so it is imperative that patients understand the sympt...

Barefoot /Minimalist Running, Should You Try It?
Is anyone else totally confused by the conflicting advice out there on what the hell we should be wearing on our feet to run, walk or otherwise work out in?
Probably Not a Good Idea
As with most other fitness debates, this seems to be one of those questions where there may be no universal best answer; everyone is different and you may need to (carefully) experiment. But after much research, pondering, vacillation, hair-pulling and cursing, I've reached a tentative decision about what may be best for me.
Here's what I've come up with, and I discovered a couple of magic tricks which may only work for me, but what the...

Getting Started With Type 2 Diabetes
By Amy Campbell
I've been writing for Diabetes Self-Management for quite some time now, and I also write for other publications and Web sites. In addition, as I've previously mentioned, I'm a dietitian and certified diabetes educator.
It seems that, no matter what topic I write about or what questions I answer, the same type of question frequently comes up: "I just found out that I have Type 2 diabetes. What do I do?" Sometimes, the question is worded a little differently, and sometimes it's more specific (for example, "what can I eat?"). These are excellent questions, of course. But they make me realize that, despite the...

A Certified Podiatry EHR Can Give Your Practice a Leg Up

EHRs in general offer a myriad of advantages over relying on paperwork, but a pre-programmed podiatry EHR uniquely positions you to improve your service and revenue while increasing patient satisfaction.

Empathy in Patient-Centered Medicine
When I moved to Colorado in 2004, one of my problems was finding a whole new set of doctors. In addition to a primary care physician, I had to find an opthamologist, a dermatologist, a podiatrist, a chiropractor, a dentist, and other specialists for passing problems. I didn’t even try to find an endocrinologist here. I can remember at least 20 doctors who treated me in the past eight years.Ever since I began to manage my diabetes I have... What would medicine look like if "no delegation" PTs were in charge?
Hearing all the back and forth discussion about RC-3 this week and the ongoing hesitancy of some physical therapists to see our profession achieve meaningful autonomy gave me pause to think about what medicine would look like if PTs so opposed to delegation were in charge. If these PTs ran medicine,
-Radiologists would perform all ultrasounds.
-Primary care docs would hand out all samples.
-Dentists would clean every tooth.
-Orthopaedists would put on every cast.
-General surgeons would sterilize their own instruments.
-Podiatrists would cut their patient's toe nails.
-Pathologists would carry your dead body to the morgue...

Obstructed Hearing
By Diana Mason. Two weeks ago, I got my hearing checked by a doctoral student in audiology at a faculty practice clinic at a university. The student was quite thorough. She advised me that she was not a physician and could not diagnose and treat hearing problems. Later on during the visit, her faculty supervisor repeated this mantra. I said each time, “Yeah, yeah…I know the spiel.”
I know it because for decades nurses were not allowed to say a patient was dead or bleeding or in congestive heart failure despite the obvious signs. Physicians were the only ones who could do these things. About 100 years ag...

Take Care of Your Feet!
I haven’t personally counted, but the average person will walk about 115,000 miles in a lifetime.
Unfortunately, about seventy-five percent of us will develop foot problems as we go, and most of these are in women.
We take our feet for granted, and we need them to work well to stay active. But in truth, they are complex mechanisms, and foot trouble can reflect serious issues in the body – like diabetes, arthritis, and circulatory or nerve problems.
So we must stay in tune with our tootsies. This means daily washing in lukewarm water, with soap, and drying them thoroughly, especially between the toes. Trim your nails st...

Depressed Mood Is a Factor in Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes
The diabetes literature contains conflicting evidence on the relationship between depression and glycemic control. This may be due, in part, to the fact that past studies failed to distinguish between patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Because these are actually completely different diseases that are often treated differently and consequently make different demands on patients, the relationship between glycemic control and depressed mood in type 1 and type 2 diabetes was examined separately.More here http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/content/63/4/551.short (Sou...
