Recognizing the prevalence of changing adult foot size: An opportunity to decrease diabetic shoe-mediated ulcerations?
Purpose: Ill-fitted shoes are often cited as the leading cause of diabetic foot ulceration and may precipitate half of all diabetes related amputations given that patients with DFU are 5–10 times more likely to present wearing ill-fitting shoes. The current study investigates the prevalence of change in foot length over time in a male, veteran population as one potential explanation for the frequent use of improperly fitted shoes.

Forensic podiatry is defined as the application of sound and researched podiatry knowledge and experience in forensic investigations, to show the association of an individual with a scene of crime, or to answer any other legal question concerned with the foot or footwear that requires knowledge of the functioning foot. A text book of forensic podiatry is always required to understand its concept and utility. This is comparatively a new field which is emerged from the disciplines of Podiatry and Forensic Science. Now it has become a complete sub-section of broad discipline of Forensic Sciences.

The effect of aging on the hardness of foot sole skin: A preliminary study
Abstract: Background: Foot problems are common in older people and altered biomechanical parameters under the foot sole has been proposed as a key risk factor for foot lesions. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the age-related differences in the hardness of foot sole skin. Methods: Twenty-six healthy volunteers without foot problems, aged from 26 to 65 years, were examined using shore meter. The hardness of the foot sole under the big toe (area 8), 1st metatarsal head (area 5), 3rd metatarsal head (area 6), 5th metatarsal head (area 7), mid foot (area 3, 4) and hind foot (area 1, 2) were measured. The corre...

Function of the triceps surae muscle group in low and high arched feet: An exploratory study
Abstract: The Achilles tendon has been shown to be comprised of segmental components of tendon arising from the tricpes surae muscle group. Motion of the foot joints in low and high arched feet may induce a change in behaviour of the triceps surae muscle group due to altered strain on the tendon.Surface electromyogram of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius and the soleus muscle from 12 subjects (with 6 low arched and 6 high arched feet) (1:1) was recorded whilst walking at a self selected speed along a 10m walkway. The results showed a high variability in muscle activity between groups with patterns emerging within groups....

A centenary year
This year celebrations on both sides of the Atlantic will take place to commemorate the establishment of organisations devoted to the practice of podiatry. In the USA the first body (The National Association of Chiropodists) which became the American Podiatric Medical Association was inaugurated while in the UK the professional association (the National Society of Chiropodists) that became the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists was finally formed by the signing of the Declaration of Members on 5th November 1912. There had been efforts to form an association in the UK in 1898 but these had come to nothing . Eventually ...

Management of Pedal Puncture Wounds
Puncture wounds of the foot are a common injury, and infection associated with these injuries may result in considerable morbidity. The pathophysiology and management of a puncture wound is dependent on the material that punctures the foot, the location and depth of the wound, time to presentation, footwear, and underlying health status of the patient. Puncture wounds should not be treated lightly, so accurate diagnosis, assessment, and treatment are paramount. Early incision and drainage, vaccination, and the use of proper antibiotics can lead to positive outcomes and prevent limb-threatening circumstances.

End-Stage Hallux Rigidus: Cheilectomy, Implant, or Arthrodesis?
End-stage arthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) typically results in anexophytic process with marked limitation of motion. Pain may occur from the degenerative process itself and/or the bone spur formation that may become directly inflamed from shoe gear. The best surgical treatment for end-stage arthrosis of the big toe joint continues to be a controversial topic despite hallux rigidus being recognized clinically for more than 100 years. Although joint-sparing procedures are considered, arthrodesis is recommended, as this procedure is definitive and produces predictable results.

Prime Suspect: Did the Science Consultant Do It?
It’s no secret that Jen-Luc Piquant is a huge fan of the TV series Bones , and last week’s episode was particularly amusing because it poked fun at Hollywood and science consultants. Entitled “The Suit on the Set,” the plot brought Booth and Brennan to Tinsel Town to visit the set of a fictional movie being made of Brennan’s (equally fictional) bestselling novel. True to form, once the camera starts rolling and Brennan hears the first line of Hollywood “science-y dialogue,” she hollers “Cut!” and launches into a lengthy objection about the inaccuracy of the scientific d...

Peripheral Artery Disease and CKD: A Focus on Peripheral Artery Disease as a Critical Component of CKD Care
The incidence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is higher in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) than in the general population. PAD is a strong independent risk factor for increased cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity, including limb amputation, in persons with CKD. Diagnosis of PAD in patients with CKD may be challenging in the absence of classic intermittent claudication or the presence of atypical leg symptoms. In addition, pedal artery incompressibility may decrease the accuracy of ankle-brachial index measurement, the most common PAD diagnostic tool. Alternative methods such as toe-brachial index s...

Adaptive changes of foot pressure in hallux valgus patients
Conclusions: Biomechanical changes in HV patients are not only caused by physical deformity but also by modified neural control strategies, possibly to alleviate discomfort and to accommodate the foot deformity. Our results suggest that dynamic evaluation of the whole foot and consideration of foot pain are necessary for the functional assessment of foot pressure in HV patients. The foot balance changes have important clinical implications.
