Technology Brings New Meaning to Being There for Patient
As families gather and celebrate the holidays, I am reminded how things change and yet stay the same. We look forward to folks coming home, but travel is getting harder. Sometimes, we need to reach out through texting, tweeting, Skype, FaceTime, Facebook and other virtual methods. They may not seem as intimate, but they allow distant connections to be maintained and even grow. Family medicine is all about nurturing relationships. How we care for our patients is also being affected by social media technologies. I recently experienced a powerful example of how modern technology let me be there during a difficult time for one...

Retiring AAFP Vice President Challenges Members to Get Involved in Global Health
My parents -- a general practitioner and a nurse -- had a faith-based calling to care for people in impoverished areas. Before I was born, they served as missionaries in India for 15 years. After providing care for a small town in Minnesota for more than a decade, they found another way to help those in great need by working on a Navajo reservation. I was in eighth grade when the family moved to Rock Point, Ariz. My parents were working so deep on the reservation that I had to live with another family more than 30 miles away. As I entered high school the following year, it became necessary for me to move back to Minnesota....

Without congressional intervention, physicians face a 26.5 percent reduction in the Medicare physician payment rate on Jan. 1 as a result of the sustainable growth rate formula. Proposal Would Open Up Access to Non-VA Physicians for Veterans
The AAFP is expressing strong support for a proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that would make it easier for veterans to access care from community-based physicians and other health care professionals who are not affiliated with the VA. Currently, the VA contracts outside the department for certain types of inpatient and outpatient care when VA facilities are unable to provide services. However, the VA only allows a veteran to be treated by a non-VA provider when the treatment begins during a hospitalization, which is a restriction that severely limits a veteran's access to non-VA physicians an...
