The authors regret to inform that several errors have been found in their article “Intra-individual variability in sleep duration and fragmentation: Associations with stress.” In Table 1, the mean, standard deviation (SD), and range values for the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale are incorrect. The correct values are: mean=5.3, SD=6.2, range=0–27. In Table 3, there are six incorrect β and p values. The correct values for Negative Affect as a predictor of variability in sleep duration are β=.13, p=.08, and for variability in sleep fragmentation: β=.15, p=.03. The correct values for the Stressful ...

Summary: Chronic stress precipitates drug seeking behavior and alters the effects of drugs of abuse. Although it is known that chronic stress potentiates acute neurochemical and hyperthermic responses to the drug of abuse methamphetamine, no studies have investigated if and how chronic stress alters other physiological responses to methamphetamine. Therefore the objective of these studies was to determine if 10 days of chronic unpredictable stress modulates corticosterone (CORT) responses to methamphetamine and furthermore how chronic stress may modulate methamphetamine-induced increases in hyperthermia and CORT. As chroni...

Sleep loss does not aggravate the deteriorating effect of hypoglycemia on neurocognitive function in healthy men

Summary: Introduction: Sleep deprivation (SD) impairs neurocognitive functions. Assuming that this effect is mediated by reduced cerebral glucose supply due to prolonged wakefulness inducing a progressive depletion of cerebral glycogen stores, we hypothesized that short-term sleep loss amplifies the deteriorating effects of acute hypoglycemia on neurocognitive functions. Methods: Seven healthy men were tested in a randomized and balanced order on 3 different conditions spaced 2 weeks apart. After a night of total SD (total SD), 4.5h of sleep (partial SD) and a night with 7h of regular sleep (regular sleep), subjects were ex...

Conclusions: These data show that HPA axis reactivity to pharmacological stimulation predicts subsequent food intake and suggest that cortisol itself may directly stimulate food consumption in humans. Understanding the physiological mechanisms that underlie stress-related eating may prove useful in efforts to attack the public health crises created by obesity. (Source: Psychoneuroendocrinology)

Acute HPA axis response to naltrexone differs in female vs. male smokers

Summary: Background: Both opioid antagonist administration and cigarette smoking acutely increase hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity as measured by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels. However, male and female smokers may differ in their response to the opioid antagonist naltrexone, which may be partially mediated by sex differences in HPA axis function. Smokers, as a group, have frequently been shown to have HPA axis dysfunction, which may have relevance to the course and maintenance of nicotine dependence. The purpose of this study was to examine possible sex differences in HPA axis...

Attentional orienting toward social stress stimuli predicts increased cortisol responsivity to psychosocial stress irrespective of the early socioeconomic status

Summary: The principal aim of the study was to examine how the natural tendency to shift attention toward or away from social stress stimuli during a restful state, relates to the magnitude of cortisol elicited in response to a stressful context. It also assessed whether any relationship that did emerge between attentional biases and cortisol responsivity would be associated with the childhood socioeconomic status (SES). Twenty-five healthy normal controls rested for 45min during which time they completed an adaptation of Posner's attentional orienting paradigm comprising social stress words as cues. Immediately following,...

Summary: Late-onset hypogonadism describes the co-occurrence of a range of physical, psychological and sexual symptoms in aging men, with the implication that these symptoms are caused by androgen deficiency. Summary: Objective: Preclinical data suggest modulating effects of both orexin/hypocretin and leptin on dopaminergic transmission in mesolimbic reward pathways. This indicates a possible role of both peptides in reward function and motivation, and thus in addictive diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the possible association between orexin and leptin, and nicotine craving in smokers in a clinical case-control study under standardized conditions. Methods: We compared orexin and leptin, ACTH and cortisol plasma concentrations (RIA) between tobacco smokers (n=60) during early nicotine withdrawal and healthy controls...

Summary: The theoretical framework proposed that cortisol and saliva alpha amylase (sAA) reactivitiy are vulnerabilities for antisocial behaviour. These indices of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and sympathetic-adrenal-medulary (SAM) components of the stress system, respectively, were considered vulnerabilities that also interact with the putative stressful transition of timing of puberty to predispose adolescents toward antisocial behaviour. The sample consisted of 8- to-13-year-old boys and girls (N=135) and a parent. For boys, timing of puberty moderated the association between cortisol and sAA reactivity and anti...

Summary: Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the most consistent findings in major depressive disorder (MDD). Impaired HPA feedback may be due to the lower glucocorticoid receptor (GR) or mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) levels in the forebrain. GR levels are transcriptionally controlled by multiple untranslated alternative first exons, each with its own promoter providing a mechanism for tissue-specific fine-tuning of GR levels. Recently epigenetic methylation of these GR promoters was shown to modulate hippocampal GR levels. Here we investigate in post-mortem brain tissues whether ...

Summary: Allopregnanolone (AlloP) is a neurosteroid that plays an important role during neural development. We have carried out research into the effects of an increase (AlloP administration) or a decrease (administration of finasteride, inhibitor of the AlloP synthesis) of neonatal AlloP levels during the fifth to ninth postnatal days in male Wistar rats on the novelty exploration (Boissier test) at adolescent ages (40 and 60 days old), and on the prepulse inh...

Summary: In order to determine whether cognitive performance is influenced by the menopausal transition, we tested cognitive performance at three time points, sampled women in earlier as well as later stages of the menopausal transition (40–65 years of age), and assessed the moderating influence of body mass index (BMI) on rate of change. Multilevel analyses were used to model change in cognitive performance as a function of number of years post menopause over and above chronological age. We investigated change in the menopausal transition for 10 cognitive outcomes in 193 women who were postmenopausal during the last tes...

Among all the problematic suggestions for DSM5, the proposal for a "Psychosis Risk Syndrome" stands out as the most ill-conceived and potentially harmful. It aims to solve a pressing problem in psychiatry-- the need for early identification and preventive treatment. Psychotic episodes create tremendous short-term impairment and may impact negatively on long-term prognosis and treatment efficacy. It would save great suffering if we could get there early and do something useful to reduce the lifetime burden of illness before too much damage is done. (Source: Psychiatric Times)
