Cosy Science presents: Don't panic! debunking common myths about crowd behaviour
In this talk Chris will cover historical backgrounds to psychological theories of crowd behaviour and how they have developed into the Social Identity Model, which is currently the dominant approach in the study of the psychology of crowd behaviour. He will show how early models that argued for the inherent irrationality of crowds are flawed, not only because they reflect a negative ideological bias, but also because they are not supported by current empirical studies of crowd behaviour over the last 30 years by social psychologists. He will illustrate my points with examples of crowd behaviour from public order situations...

When will we understand Autism Spectrum Disorders?
The 2011 Rosalind Franklin Award Lecture will be given by Professor Francesca Happé
It is agonising for a parent, troubling for a clinician, and puzzling for a researcher when a young child seems oblivious to people, is fixated on spinning objects, and shows no sign of communicating. An adult who finds their own inner states opaque, consistently misjudges social situations, and is helpless in the face of any change from preferred routine, is no less of a mystery. When will we understand autism spectrum disorders?

Two systems drive the way we think and make choices: system one is fast, intuitive, and emotional; system two is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman will argue that only by understanding how the two systems work together, can we learn the truth about the role of optimism in opening up a new business, and the psychological pitfalls of playing the stock market. Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite:.
Cambridge Forum is pleased to welcome evolutionary psychologist ROBERT KURZBAN as he explains his challenge to the traditional notion of the integrated self. The human mind’s very structure makes for behavioral inconsistency, he argues, so it is perfectly natural to believe that everyone else is a hypocrite.
What is meant by the concept of the "modular mind?" What are the implications of inevitable human inconsistency in a world built around rational models?

Soul Dust: the magic of consciousness
Venue: Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House
Speaker: Professor Nicholas Humphrey
Chair: Professor Charles Stafford
How is consciousness possible? What biological purpose does it serve? Nicholas
Humphrey has a radical new theory. Consciousness, he argues, is nothing less than a magical-mystery show that we stage inside our own heads – paving the way for spirituality, and allowing us to reap the rewards, and anxieties, of living in the ‘soul niche’.
Nicholas Humphrey is emeritus professor of psychology at LSE. His many books include A History of the Mind, Leaps of Faith and, most recently, Soul Dust.

Time bombs or tidal waves: the impact of Iraq/Afghanistan on the health of the UK Armed Forces
UK Armed Forces have been involved in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for longer than the First or Second World Wars. One intervention has now come to an end, the other continues. But what has been the psychological and social cost? The media tells us to expect a tidal wave of mental health problems amongst those who served there –especially given that seems to be happening in the USA. Given that we fought the same enemy, on the same terrain, facing similar threats and risks, and sadly for the last few years taking the same rate of casualties, we should expect the same over here. But what are the facts? Prof Simon Wesse...

Psychotherapy and politics, contributing to a sustainable society
What are the characteristics of a sustainable society, and what can counselling and psychotherapy contribute to its creation? Like 'freedom' or 'justice', 'sustainability' is a complex and flexible term, but its key meaning could be rendered as improving the quality of current human life without damaging either future generations or present ecosystems. It includes such concepts as emotional sustainability and economic sustainability. There are many ways in which and levels on which the idea of sustainability interacts with the theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy.
