Male mortality in three Brazilian State Capitals, 1979-2007
CONCLUSION: These capitals show features of a developing city, with reduced fertility, increased longevity and consequent trend to an aging population. Estimates of the men high risk of dying make clear their vulnerability. The intensity with these events occur demand actions that will reduce the mortality rates of preventable diseases and the men's risky behaviors. It is necessary that men adopt healthier lifestyles habits, thus increasing life expectancy and reducing the gender differences in mortalities. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia)

Slim Women Have Higher Endometriosis Risk Than Obese Women
Slim women have a higher risk of developing endometriosis than women who are morbidly obese, according to a new major study. The research was published in the journal Human Reproduction and showed that morbidly obese females (BMI greater than 40 kg/m2) have a 39% lower risk of endometriosis than females with a current BMI in the low normal range (8.5 to 22.4 kg/m2). When the investigators looked back at the subjects' BMIs when they were 18 years old, they found that those who were morbidly obese at that age had a 41% reduced risk of endometriosis than those with low normal BMI... Modeling the initial transmission dynamics of influenza A H1N1 in Guangdong Province, China
Conclusions: With the help of the serological survey, useful estimates of key epidemiological parameters for the influenza A H1N1 outbreak in Guangdong Province were obtained. The sensitivity analysis suggests that different latent periods and infectious periods, which specify different mean durations of generation time, have a significant impact on R0. Our proposed model and findings provide a relevant contribution towards understanding the characteristics of influenza A H1N1 in Guangdong Province. Prioritization of candidate genes for cattle reproductive traits, based on protein-protein interactions, gene expression, and text-mining
The objective of this study was to predict and rank genes and processes in brain areas and pituitary involved in reproductive traits in cattle using information derived from three different data sources: gene expression, protein-protein interactions, and literature. We identified 59, 89, 53, 23, and 71 genes in bovine amygdala, dorsal hypothalamus, hippocampus, pituitary, and ventral hypothalamus, respectively, potentially involved in processes underlying estrus and estrous behavior. Functional annotation of the candidate genes points to a number of tissue-specific processes of which the "neurotransmitter/ion channel/synap...

Molecular Reproduction & Development Volume 80, Issue 5, May 2013 cover image
The actin cytoskeleton is an integral part of specialized structures in Sertoli cells of the postpubertal mammalian testis, contributing to the blood testis barrier and the apical ectoplasmic specialization. In a study by Niedenberger et al. (this issue), a dominant regulator of the actin cytoskeleton, Palladin, unexpectedly moves into Sertoli cell nuclei as these cytoskeletal structures form at puberty. This image is a cross‐section of an adult stage‐VIII tubule stained for Palladin (brown) and counterstained with hematoxylin (blue). (Source: Molecular Reproduction and Development)

Somos Muchos (We Are So Many)
Although Mexican state officials have long attributed Mexico's “overpopulation problem” to its “high” fertility rate, that rate is almost at replacement level today. Nevertheless, anxieties about overpopulation rooted in reproduction persist. Based on my ethnographic fieldwork in Mexico City fertility clinics, this article examines how overpopulation anxieties affect infertile women as they use assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to try to conceive children. I examine how these women attempt to justify their seemingly out‐of‐place use of ARTs in this “overpopulated” context by evoking discourses of ...

Rwanda: Family Planning Is an Essential Health and Social Tool
[New Times]In most of our societies, there is a rise in the population rate without expansion of land. This in most cases results into population pressure for example in 30 years to come, the population of Rwanda might rise three times higher and on 26,000 square kilometers of land. If the fertility rates are not checked, the population will increase beyond manageable limits. (Source: AllAfrica News: Pregnancy and Childbirth)

Air kerma to HP(3) conversion coefficients for photons from 10 keV to 10 MeV, calculated in a cylindrical phantom
In the framework of the ORAMED project (Optimization of RAdiation protection for MEDical staff), funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme, different studies were aimed at improving the quality of radiation protection in interventional radiology and nuclear medicine. The main results of the project were presented during a final workshop held in Barcelona in January 2011, the proceedings of which are available in the open literature. One of the ORAMED tasks was focused on the problem of eye-lens photon exposure of the medical staff, a topic that gained more importance especially after the ICRP decision to low...

BMPR2 is required for postimplantation uterine function and pregnancy maintenance
In this study, we discovered that bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 (BMPR2) is essential for postimplantation physiology and fertility. Despite normal implantation and early placental/fetal development, deletion of Bmpr2 in the uterine deciduae of mice triggered midgestation abnormalities in decidualization that resulted in abnormal vascular development, trophoblast defects, and a deficiency of uterine natural killer cells. Absence of BMPR2 signaling in the uterine decidua consequently suppressed IL-15, VEGF, angiopoietin, and corin signaling. Disruption of these pathways collectively lead to placental abruption, ...

Reversing Tied Tubes: Tests To Help Diagnose Fertility
Many women in their late 30's and early 40's wonder if having their tubes untied is practical and if they can become pregnant after reversal. One way to determine fertility is by taking FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone): a blood test drawn on cycle day 3. FSH is the pituitary hormone that stimulates follicle growth and egg maturation. In cases where the ovary is resistant to ovulation, FSH levels will be abnormally elevated. An increased level does not mean a woman cannot get pregnant, but she has some degree of ovarian reluctance to release eggs. Most labs consider 10 and less to be normal range. Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. ...

The evolution of queen pheromones in the ant genus Lasius
Abstract Queen pheromones are among the most important chemical messages regulating insect societies yet they remain largely undiscovered, hindering research into interesting proximate and ultimate questions. Identifying queen pheromones in multiple species would give new insight into the selective pressures and evolutionary constraints acting on these ubiquitous signals. Here, we present experimental and comparative evidence that 3‐methylalkanes, hydrocarbons present on the queen's cuticle, are a queen pheromone throughout the ant genus Lasius. Interspecific variation in the chemical profile is consistent with 3‐methy...

Functional proteomic analysis of seminal plasma proteins in men with various semen parameters
Conclusions: We have identified proteins that are over-or underexpressed in the seminal plasma of men with poor sperm quality. The distinct presence of some of the proteins may serve as potential biomarkers and provide insight into the mechanistic role played by these proteins in male infertility. Further studies using Western Blot analysis are required to validate these findings. (Source: Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology)
