IMG Advice for Onc/Haem/Research
I am currently doing a combined medical/research degree in a reputable university overseas, somewhat analogous to the MTSP.
I'm pretty early on in my degree, but would love to plan ahead so I don't get caught out. So if anyone could give some advice it would help a lot. Also please forgive my ignorance if I say something that's not quite right.
The plan is to do my residency or a fellowship in the US - depending on which is easier to get into. However, the only way I would see it being worthwhile is if I can match with a top 5 Onc program; i.e. Brighams, Mass gen, JH, Mayo, MD anderson. Although really my preferences are ...

Getting published in a medical paper?
Hi,
I have been given an opportunity to help research and maybe co(ish)write a paper for medical research practices etc. and I was just wondering if this would be a good this to put onto my personal statement or would be impressive.
I'm planning on doing it anyway because I think it will be really interesting and get to correspond with some professors of cardiology.
Basically, question: Will it be worth putting on my personal statement (Source: New Media Medicine)

something interesting
Hello,
I was watching the finalists videos of the spacelab competition (where teenagers come up with experiments to be done in the ISS) and this kid caught particularly my attention (video here: http://goo.gl/HIbKf ) -at the end when there is written in an anotation that this could be useful to medical research. Do you really think that we could use sponge-like spicules to somehow concentrate drugs near the tumors? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

27 years old too old to start studying medicine?
Hi,
I am a 2.1 graduate from Anatomical and Physiological Sciences. After uni I went into medical research and have been here for 3.5 years. I want to apply to study medicine starting in 2012. I will be 27 years old if I do get in and start. Do you think this is too old? I am thinking of applying mainly to GEP courses so people will be closer aged to myself. Also I am not sure which universities will be able to 'overlook' some of my school grades- as I didnt do as well as what most universites ask for. I have 4 Scottish Highers- English, Biology, Chemistry and Modern Studies.
Thanks for any comments/help! (Source: New Media Medicine)

Nova Research Fellowship
Does anyone know the deal with the Nova research fellowship? During the interview, they said that it is one year and that you then get the next two years tuition free. I think I also remember them mentioning that it was in either OMM or psychology.
So here are my questions. Are they paying your living expenses during the year of research? If not, can you take out more loans? How in depth is the research? I got the feeling that the fellowships were just so that the school could saying that they were doing medical research. OMM and psychology both seem like areas where the school could fund research really inexpensively.

What are my chances for MD or DO?
My career goal is t become a medical examiner, and recently I found out you could become one as a DO. What are my chances for MD or DO? I had some illnesses/hospitalizations my first 2 years in college that definitely mess me up. I am also a female URM. I have become especially interested in DO schools in CA.

What is the basic medicine research level in Mayo, Cleveland Clinic and MGH?
I know mayo, cleveland clinic and MGH (massachusetts general hospital) have a very strong background in training M.D. students. But I am going to pursue a Ph.D study. That means I wont do clinical works, I wont be a doctor and what I just do is to do some research work. But I dont know what are these institutes' research level compared with some universities such as harvard, stanford or JHU, etc. And there are no rankings for these institutes research work. USNews just have a hospital ranking. So can anybody tell me how do these institutes do in basic medical research compared with some famous universities? Do they have a ...
