NHS Informatics: delivering a successful information revolution
In the midst of arguably the most significant restructuring of the NHS since its inception, and in an ever-evolving landscape of new digital technologies, the role of data and information in our healthcare system is rapidly changing. The Department of Health has called for an 'information revolution', which will be defined by transparency and accessibility, and is a critical catalyst for quality and productivity improvements. To achieve this, data management is moving from being the sole domain of informatics professionals to the concern of all working within the NHS.
At NHS Informatics: delivering a successful information...

Abnormal: towards a scientific model of disability
This colourful and often playful national touring exhibition results from an artist’s residency at the National Institute of Medical Research. Using digital imagery and installation, the artist Ju Gosling aka ju90 explores the cultural construction of disability via society’s (mis)interpretation of science and medicine. The tour climaxes at the Hunterian, and includes an installation made especially for the museum. In the Memory Jar Collection, Ju responds to John Hunter’s collection of human and animal body parts, together with the use of photography within the study of anatomy.

Who needs men anyway?
The idea of a world without men is a popular theme in science fiction, but now advances in scientific research could mean that in the future these fantasy worlds become reality. How might recent developments in science change the way we reproduce? And what ethical questions might our quests for alternative reproduction bring to light?
This café explores the possibility of reproduction without men and how this might drastically alter their role in society. Are men in danger of becoming a dying breed?
Professor Steve Jones from University College London has written widely on the topic of the genetic weakness of man. Profes...

Gaps (and Gasps!) in Medical-Ethical Reasoning: From Ethical Theory to Medical Practice
Good healthcare practice and policy cannot be developed on the basis of scientific evidence alone. Also essential are value-laden or “moral” judgments which, for example, prioritize some endpoints over others (e.g., quality of life over quantity of life), and sanction some means of achieving those endpoints but prohibit others (e.g., Is informed consent always necessary? May harm be caused to some in order to prevent greater harm to others?).
This presentation will first demonstrate how the methods that contemporary ethical theorists use to develop, test and apply moral judgments are similar to the methods that medic...

Overtreated: The Role of Medical Evidence in Reducing Practice Variation and Controlling Costs
Medicine: Mind the Gap
Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Practice
An NIH Seminar Series
Comparative effectiveness research has been touted as one of the most important paths to bending the health care cost curve downward. In the long run, medical evidence will undoubtedly rationalize the delivery of health care and help control costs, but what about the short term? The Dartmouth Atlas Project has documented a 2.5-fold variation in per capita Medicare spending in different parts of the country, most of which cannot be explained by variation in prevalence of illness or patient preference. These studies suggest that as...

Two of Ralph Steinman’s favorite hobbies – ballroom dancing and downhill skiing – illustrate contrasting approaches to how scientists design vaccines, an endeavor in which the renowned physician immunologist is trying to bring about change.
One vision is polished and precise: the steps will lead to a specific ending every time. The other involves a constant challenge, with random happenings along the way affecting the outcome. The end is usually a question mark.
