Periodontal-Systemic Interactions: Defining the Problem of Causality
Periodontal disease has been associated with diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory disorders, and cancer. The evidence for these associations varies in strength with the most convincing studies relating periodontal disease to diabetes. A critical assessment of these studies will be presented with an analysis of the state of the evidence for causality. Convergence of Integrin and Immunoreceptor Signaling Pathways
Dr. Lowell's work has focused on the role of Src-family tyrosine kinases in regulating many signaling pathways, including responses to innate immune stimuli (bacterial LPS, DNA or yeast), cytokines, growth factors or immune complexes in myeloid cells and B-lymphocytes. In recent work, his studies have suggested that the major signaling pathway affected by the loss of these kinases is integrin-mediated activation. The 2007 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture Dr. Margaret Chan, who is from the People's Republic of China, earned her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. She joined the Hong Kong Department of Health in 1978. In 1994, Dr Chan was appointed Director of Health of Hong Kong.
