A few questions about obtaining medical training in Ireland
Greetings, all! I have a few questions regarding obtaining medical training in Ireland... specifically higher specialty training. >> As of now, after talking with representatives/agents in the Irish Medical Council, the best I can do at this point is to apply for registration into the general registry. I am a Category 4 applicant - I did my medical schooling and postgraduate internship in a non-EU/EEA country - however, I completed my residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in critical/intensive care medicine in the US. They stated that applicants who do not have the equivalent or a Certificate of Ex...

Occam's Razor be damned
yesterday, 2 cases, the first severe respiratory distress and chest pain. Turns out to be pneumonia with adjacent effusion, and b/l PE's, and a large lung nodule suspicious for Ca, despite a story sounding like COPD and lungs too tight to move any air and an CXR looking more like CHF. The second, suicide attempt, by alcohol and xanies and oxy's (the latter 2 stolen), with aspiration pneumonitis, and tylenol level >100 (despite the PD and paramedics finding no tylenol containing bottles), and then the urine hcg popped up positive, lol. At least I felt like an EP instead of an urgent care doc, :) (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

General advice- GEM
I've already posted this on the student room so apologies for the cross post. Hello everyone, I realise this may bit poorly timed given that a lot of you are waiting on interview offers and it's a stressful time... Just wondered if I might pick your brains for some general advice on what I should be doing to maxmise my chances for GEM in 2014. My Background I read English at university and then was offered a training contract to become a lawyer at a big city law firm. I'm there now and it's miserable. Time to pursue what I've felt I ought to have done for years. No science A levels, but consistently good academics thr...

The Research Agrees: Smoking Is Really Bad for You
Four new studies offer powerful evidence of the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting or not being exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking in the U.K. — Between 1996 amd 2001, the Million Women Study started following more than one million women aged 50 to 65 years of age. In a report published in the Lancet, trial investigators, including renowned epidemiologist Richard Peto, found that 12-year mortality was significantly higher in women with a history of smoking compared with women who never smoked (rate ratio 2.76, CI 2.71-2.81). Smokers, the authors calculated, lose 10 years of life. The good news ...

Considering Pre-Pharmacy
Hi, I'm a 17 year old college freshmen and currently a Respiratory Care major. Long story short, I originally was a Chemistry major and on the track for Pre-Pharmacy, but after seeing the course work and becoming intimidated, I changed my major and my degree plan to Respiratory Care. It is only the middle of the semester and I am regretting changing my major. Yes, Respiratory Care is interesting and I can see myself graduating with a BSRC, but I really want to become a pharmacist. I have an appointment with an academic advisor on Friday about changing my major back to Pre-Pharmacy, but I am getting scared that I won't be ...

Consequences of Flow
The post about the kid with the expanding neck hematoma got me thinking about some of the unintended consequence of delays or disruptions in ED flow. While the prior thread focused mostly on PG/economic reasons for improving flow, those aren't the only reasons why flow should be optimized. Timely flow of information (especially as regards lab and x-ray results) is crucial to good patient care, and lack of flow can turn cases that are cut and dry under the retrospectoscope into self-perpetuating Charlie Foxtrots. In fact, one of the most crucial skills an attending has is the ability to quickly and correctly identify who c...

Hey guys, So sometimes I see people posting that it's annoying that the TPRH workbook doesn't list what questions are for what topic in each subject, so I figured I'd post it. This is for the most recent edition of the workbook, but I suspect it's basically the same for the old ones. q = questions, p = passages Physics Kinematics: q 1-62, p 1-2 Mechanics I: q 63-113, p 3 Mechanics II: q 114-140, p 4 Mechanics III: q 141-200, p 5-13 Fluids and elasticity of solis: q 201-247, p 14-23 Electrostatics: q 248-269, p 24-25 Electricity and magnetism: q 270-294, p 26-38 Oscillations and waves: q 295-327, p 39-51 Sound, light, an...

Water on accessed port
So, I went to take a shower. I put a plastic bag with tape over my accessed port. During my shower, it leaked and then my tagaderm got water in it. So, we took off everything, my husband wiped it all down with alcohol, we flushed it and removed the needle. When I told my doctor about it, he said we should not have flushed it and just removed the needle. He said now I could have infection breeding in my port which could be septic! What?! Now he says my next 2 flushes I have to stay for 2 hours after to watch me. Has anyone experienced this? Is it really that dangerous to get it wet and then flush it? My stupid Dr won't give me IVs and my PfTs are down from 71% to 64%. he got his secretary to ring me and she informed me "Professor won't give IVs for candida and to do another culture", which I did on Fri. What does your Doc do. I feel I need my IVs and he is delayng time. I don't have energy to do much and the cough at night time is dreadful. What would your Dr. do? Volunteering

Does anyone know of ways to volunteer for CF charities?

Actually to be more specific, when I was younger and in the hospital a few times I was visited by a volunteer that had board games and they just went from room to room and played with kids who had long stays in the hospital. Is that hospital specific or do specific groups do that kind of thing? I'd be really interested in that, but any help would be appreciated.
(Source: Cystic Fibrosis Adults Forum)

Emory CF Docs and Staff are tops!

By the way, the new CF pulmonologist at Emory is awesome. Great guy. Dr. Seth Walker. So is the rest of the crew! Dr. Tangpricha rocks the house. Jessica, Shaina, Mews and Renee are the best!

http://www.emoryhealthcare.org/cystic-fibrosis/our-group.html

Randford (49, DF-508, P140S, Osteo)
(Source: Cystic Fibrosis Adults Forum)

Hypertonic Saline

So it's that time. I'm officially starting on hypertonic saline for the first time. It seems pretty simple. Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share? Are there any cautions?

Thanks!

Randford (49, DF-508, P140S, Osteo)
(Source: Cystic Fibrosis Adults Forum)
