An improved acute gouty arthritis rat model and therapeutic effect of rhizoma dioscoreae nipponicae on acute gouty arthritis based on the protein-chip methods.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract Rhizoma Dioscoreae Nipponicae (RDN) is an herbal medicine. In the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the function of RDN is to expel wind and remove dampness. Inflammatory mechanisms play an important role in the pathological process and prognosis of acute gouty arthritis (AGA). The aim of this study was to determine the specially expressed proteins through testing the proteins of the synovium in rats with AGA. The animal model of AGA was set up by Monosodium urate crystal (MSU) combined with hypoxanthine (HX), which was ameliorated in our previous experiment. Blood samples for measurement of ...

Discussion Nutritional problems can occur in all parts of the world and in all socioeconomic strata. Caloric and/or protein inadequacy unfortunately plagues too many people because of inadequate supplies or availability. Supplemental food programs around the world attempt to provide appropriate nutrition, but can be stymied because of war, political instability, economic instability and many other social factors. The most common specific nutrient deficiencies are iron and Vitamin D deficiencies. Minerals important for essential nutrition include copper, iodine, selenium and zinc. A typical mixed diet usually provides enou...

Abstract Patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) tend to produce autoantibodies and have a propensity to develop immunoregulatory disorders. We characterize the profile of autoantibodies in a group of HAE patients and investigate their memory B cells' phenotype and activation status. We studied the activity status phenotype, Toll-like receptor (TLR)-9 expression and total phosphotyrosine in B cells isolated from HAE patients. Additionally, the following autoantibodies were assessed in the serum of 61 HAE patients: anti-nuclear, rheumatoid factor, anti-cardiolipin, anti-tissue transglutaminase, anti-endomysial, an...

We investigated the association of four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of the TIM-1 gene with susceptibility to RA in a Chinese Hui ethnic minority group.

Conclusion: Our data indicate that HLA‐DRB1*15 may promote the production of high ACPA level. Due to high value of ACPA level scores in the 2010 ACR/EULAR classification criteria of RA, the presence of HLA‐DRB1*15 may, at least in part, contribute to fulfilling the criteria of RA. This illustrates the complex nature of the genetic regulation of ACPA level. Additional mechanistic studies on the regulation of ACPA and ACPA‐positive RA are pending. While less defined than the surgical management of OLTs, realignment procedures for the varus ankle and hindfoot have also been studied and reported in some detail, albeit with a focus on management of ankle arthritis. In this article we review practical concepts from the orthopaedic literature that may be applied when treating patients with concomitant ...

Tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis and its potential roles in lupus nephritisemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract Introduction  Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is a recently identified proinflammatory cytokine of the TNF superfamily that functions through binding to Fn14 receptor in target cells. TWEAK has multiple biological activities. Studies show that TWEAK plays an important role in immune inflammatory diseases. Recent work has revealed that TWEAK may play an important role in the pathogenesis of kidney damage, including in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), where its concentration in urine was correlated with the level of activity of lupus nephritis (LN). This study aimed to determine serum soluble CD147 (sCD147) levels and their clinical associations in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Serum sCD147 levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 61 SSc patients and 24 healthy individuals. Serum sCD147 levels were significantly elevated in SSc patients compared with healthy individuals (P < 0.001). Among patients with SSc, there were no differences in serum sCD147 levels between limited cutaneous (n = 30) and diffuse cutaneous SSc (n = 31). Patients with SSc who had elevated sCD147 levels had renal crisis more often than those with norm...

Conclusion: Patients with a short-stem hip implant can return to a good level of activity postoperatively. Participation in sports almost reached similar levels as preoperatively but with a shift from high- to low-impact activities. This seems desirable from a surgeon’s point of view but should also be communicated to the patient before hip replacement. (Source: The American Journal of Sports Medicine)
