Inducing and Breaking Tolerogenic Antigen-Presenting Cell Function
Professional antigen-presenting cells (APC) such as dendritic cells (DC) and macrophages play a critical role in the initiation and maintenance of a T cell-mediated immune response. APC are essential for T cell priming, differentiation and activation in lymphoid tissue and at sites of inflammation. Understanding the molecular mechanisms via which APC function can be controlled may give novel insights into how T cell mediated immunity may be induced or blocked. This meeting will highlight current research aimed at inducing dendritic cells with tolerogenic function in order to treat inflammatory disease (e.g. rheumatoid arth...

Triggering murine arthritis by a single commensal microbe
We report that autoimmune arthritis was strongly attenuated in the K/BxN mouse model under germ-free (GF) conditions, accompanied by reductions in serum-autoantibody titers, splenic autoantibody-secreting cells, germinal centers and the splenic T helper (Th)17 cell population. Neutralization of interleukin-17 prevented arthritis development in specific-pathogen-free K/BxN mice due to a direct effect of this cytokine on B cells to inhibit germinal center formation. The systemic immune-system deficiencies of the GF animals reflected a loss of Th17 cells from the small-intestinal lamina-propria in the absence of gut microbiot...

CANCELED - Regulation of T Cell Effector Functions through the Cytoskeleton
Andy was an M.D., Ph.D student at Washington University School of Medicine and he remained at Barnes Hospital for his Residency in Internal Medicine. He moved to UCSF for his Fellowship in Rheumatology and in 1990 entered the lab of Art Weiss. His post-doctoral fellowship was tremendously successful as he discovered, cloned and characterized the critical protein tyrosine kinase, ZAP-70, which he showed was recruited to the T cell antigen receptor upon TCR engagement. He moved back to Washington University and rose through the faculty ranks and in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He continued studies on T cell activatio...

Genomics of Tolerance
Christophe has a long time interest in the study of thymic tolerance and development of organ specific autoimmunity. During a long-standing collaboration with Diane Mathis, he has studied animal models for diabetes, arthritis and Aire deficiencies. His current research applies a wide range of technologies to study tolerance mechanisms, including mouse genetics, gene expression profiling, mass spectrometry, RNAi screens and imaging tools to track autoimmune inflammation in vivo. He is currently studying how FoxP3 coordinates with other elements in specifying the different facets of the Treg phenotype. His seminar will surel...

Managing your publisher
Journals can often be a major source of income for a society that is then used to carry out other society activities. The majority of societies do not publish their own journal(s) and are consequently reliant on finding a publisher to do so on their behalf. How do you find a suitable publisher and, once you do, how do you manage that relationship so the publisher publishes the journal as the society wishes? Who is in control? There are many aspects to managing a publisher, from setting up the details of the initial contract, working with the publisher on a daily basis, to receiving the revenue. How do you ensure that you h...
