Monderate staph?

So my oldest DD was admitted Tuesday after her PFT's took a serious nose dive. She went from mid 70% down to 45% in a month. This was after she had been on an oral antibiotic. After about 3 days of Tobramycin and Fortaz her PFT's went back up to mid 70's. She is home now on IV's and goes back in week after next. For the first time she managed to cough up not one but TWO green chunks for the clinic. Both were tested and apparently the only thing that has grown was staph and they said it was moderate.

So my q...

OT: Worked OTC in a pharmacy, now I never want to be a pharmacist
Job itself is not bad. I would not mind being a pharmacist for a couple of months but doing this for YEARS?
I work over the counter so my experience is limited but I see the pharmacists doing almost the exact same thing every single day and they can easily be confused with the technicians.
Of course, I expected this but it was not until I experienced it that I began to realize how unfulfilling this must be. Pharmacy is more of a job than a career. The 9-5 mentality is strong and it shows with most of the pharmacists I worked with; none of them actually want to be there.
I used to only think about how I would be helpin...

RA Factor in lung disease??

My pulmo ordered some blood work a few weeks ago and I just got the results in the mail. There was a category for an anti-neutrophil test and it had a few things under it, one being RA factor. Most everything was normal but the RA was 4 which apparantly is positive. When I researched what this was testing for all the information was about rheumatoid arthritis and I dont understand how this links to lung disease. It seems that this is a really low RA value but is this significant in any way to my health? Just curious what it meant<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"&g...

Methotrexate anyone?

I was curious if any one here had any experience with this medication? As I had posted before my DD's joints are swelling. After a long drawn out time we finally got into see a rheumatologist. They put her on Melxicam. After a month of being on it she is still flaring up, unable to move. So now they want to put her on methotrexate. 80 units once a week. Along with 9 days of prednisone.

arthritis anyone??

I am a troubled mom to a 8 year old daughter dx with JRA in 2010.. Previously healthy, then in 2010 dx with horrible resp issues, chronic cough, ear infections, sinus infections, treated her for asthma, was put on steroids for most of 2010-11 for her lungs and asthma.. she is very small for her age, always has been, and pulmonary wanted to check for CF due to chronic cough, small stature etc.. Sweat tests + and intermediate. Genotyping revealed Df508 one mutation only. She got the "whole 9 yards" of genetic work up that is available, I am told.

Is this a CF issue?

Wierd question time. Is joint pain in a slow growing 13 yr old part of CF?

My DD with CF for almost a year now has been having random joint pain. Her knee has swelled up about twice it's original size twice. This last time she was not able to put any weight on it at all. Before this happened her wrist was hurting too. I have taken her to the pediatrician, who sent us to the Orthopedic clinic. They claimed she has Superior Plicas Syndrom (SP) basically she has a fluid sac above the knee...

Suspected CF-looking for information
My 16 year old daughter has just been referred for CF testing. Long story shorter, she had what we thought was an abscessed tooth back in March 2011, through further discovery it was a cyst in her jaw. During the diagnosis of the cyst the CT scan reviled that her frontal sinuses were 90% blocked as well as one in her forehead region that I can't remember the name of. We went to the ENT and he put her on antibiotics, decongestant and nasal spray for a month. They did another CT this past Monday and while the nasal blockage was reduced to about 40-50% t...

including rheumatology
Does anyone include rheumatology in their practice, specifically injections. It seems to take quite a bit of skill. I did a rotation and very much enjoyed it (was able to ease a lot of pain) but I would blow my brains out if this is all I did every day, please take no offense just my feelings. (this is why I picked family med over Internal med). Guess my question is can I keep this skill set on the back burner and feel competent to pull it out when I need it, or could I even have a subset patient base? Do you all just refer it off? Oh, and did you just do electives in Rheum or would a sports medicine fellowship be somethi...

Those darn new Pancreaze bottles
I know some of you have switched over from Pancrease MT whatever to the new Pancreaze in what ever dosage of Lipase you need.
Some have commented on the package change from the nice lightweight plastic bottle to the heavier glass bottle that comes in yet another package, a box.
But has anyone had any difficulties with the stupid child-proof cap on these new bottles? I am neither a child, a person with arthritis, or a senior citizen and I have had quite a few of these bottles difficult to open. It's getting ridiculous, when I have to give it to my husband to open and he gives me, after his first failed attempt to open t...

SGUL work experience
So I'm going to retry for SGUL 2012 entry. My work experience so far is:
- 10 months care home 4 hours a week
- 5 months befriending individuals with mental health problems 4 hours/week
- 3 days hospital shadowing - rheumatoloy/haemotology/pathology
- 3 days GP shadowing
- 2 days pathologist shadowing
- 3 days psychiatrist shadowing - doing in 2 weeks
I applied ages ago to do some work with THT in HIV/AIDS because it was something I was interested in but they are doing less work with befriending/support and more work in managing long term.
Does anyone have any advice as to what else I can/should do over the ...

Problems with Levaquin
Originally posted by: Deb
Has anyone ever had problems taking Levaquin? I have taken it several times over the years and the only side effect that was bothersome was insomnia. However, I just finished a 14 day dose and every joint in my body aches. It started in my shoulders and I dismissed it as pain from exercising. Then it was my elbows and then my hips. Since my mother has rheumatoid arthritis I started thinking perhaps I was developing it as well. Today I could barely get out of bed due to the pain in my joints--my whole body. Upon doing some research I discovered that this can be caused by the Levaquin. And even wor...
