Should We Have a Separate Premedical Lounge? Vote
Anonymous vote on whether or not there should be a joint pre-osteo and pre-allo lounge. "Yes" means you want a separate premed lounge and "no" means you don't want a separate premed lounge.
Let's see what the SDN community wants.
Some Pros:
1) We won't have to go to the normal "lounge", which is a very toxic environment.
2) It will reduce spam by creating a space where users can post with fewer restrictions.
3) The premeds on SDN will get to know each other better, and it will make SDN more fun and extend the time a typical user spends on SDN.
4) It will bring pre-allo and pre-oste...

Hi friends,
For those of us that will be starting the "advanced" phase of GME and jumping into a Tox fellowship next year. Is there any advice you senior fellows or new grads can offer us wannabes?

And here is the best resource for board prep: ....
-I couldn't have survived a night of Tox call without: ...(e.g. Micromedex/poisindex, such-and-such Tox app, etc)
-Best practices for writing consults (e.g. I've heard of folks bringing laptop or t...

Fluoroquinolones and prednisone interaction
Conclusion : "Current exposure to fluoroquinolones increases the risk of Achilles tendon disorders. This finding is in agreement with a smaller study, in which we found an association between tendinitis and fluoroquinolones. Our results indicate that this adverse effect is relatively rare, with an overall excess risk of 3.2 cases per 1000 patient years. The effect seems to be restricted to people aged 60 or over, and within this group concomitant use of corticosteroids increased the risk substantially. The proportion of Achilles tendon disorders among patients with both risk factors that is attributable to their inter...

Best fellowship for marketability
Was wondering your opinion on which fellowship within emergency medicine makes one the most marketable. Pediatric EM? Toxicology? Critical care? Something else?
Note that I don't necessarily mean what will make the most money, but what will allow the emergency physician to have the best chance of getting a job if/when the job market for emergency physicians tightens up. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

I keep falling - need help
I have been on IV antibiotics a lot this past year and all of a sudden my right ankle keeps twisting and I fall. When I try to stand back up on it, it twists again like a limp rope. Today I fell 6 times but can't figure out what's going on. I feel like some of my medicines are building a toxic level in my body. I called my doctor and they told me to stop taking VFend (taking for sketosporin?? Bacteria) and to come see them. I was wondering if anyone else ever experienced anything like this? I'm also on Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Xyzal, ProAir inhaler, Oxycodone, and Protonix among a few others. I was on a really hi...

post-bacc advice/help needed!!! please!
Hi Everyone,
I am a current applicant in this cycle but because of mostly a low BCP(2.8) I didn't really have much hope so I have been taking classes to raise it. I did three classes at a semester school: Hematology, Virology and Neurophysiology all of which raised my BCP to a 2.9. Now, I have been accepted to a formal post-bacc that is on a quarter system and after 2 quarters would raise my bcp to a 3.08 if I take 24 units and get all A's. I really like the semester school I took classes at, however, and if I take 10 units this semester it would raise my bcp to a 3.04 so not too big a difference from the quarter school. ...

Help! classifying coursework
hello everyone!!
I just had a question about classifying some of the classes I took.. ( at UC
Berkeley.)
I majored in Nutritional Sciences: Physiology & Metabolism, and many upper division "nutritional sciences" courses I took were focused on physiology and metabolism. Considering the content of these courses, I believe that these courses should be classified as biology, but I just wanted to make sure because in the instructions, "nutrition" was classified as other science. (While "physiology" was classified as biology)
Some of the courses that I'm uncertain of are:

MD & DO Apply now or wait a year?
Hi guys,
I am currently building my application for the Spring 2011 application (Fall 2012 admission) and am contemplating whether it would be better to continue with the current application cycle or wait a year (or two). I would greatly appreciate your input in regard to this matter.
I had a poor experience with science at high school; therefore, I started off as a business major in college. During sophomore year, I decided to give science another try (so I do not have any regrets later in life), and I loved it. I continued to follow through with science classes while satisfying the requirements for my business major.

Lysine and Tobi?
I just finished up my 28 days of inhaled TOBI last friday. Today I got a cold sore so I decided to take 1000mg of lysine to help it go away (I haven't taken it before but my sister has). After I took it-I found this online at a few different websites:
What other drugs will affect lysine? The following drugs may become toxic if you take them together with lysine. Tell your healthcare provider if you are using any of these:
gentamicin (Garamycin);
tobramycin (Nebcin, TOBI);
amikacin (Amikin);
kanamycin (Kantrex);
netilmicin (Netromycin);
neomycin (Mycifradin, Neo-Fradin, Neo-Tab);
netilmicin (Netromycin);
streptomycin; or...

13 yr old son newly dx w/ CF; also dx w/ Crohn's
Hi -
This week my 13 yr old son (Danny) had 3 positive sweat tests (62, 66, 66) and was dx w/ CF by his pulmonologist. A limited genetic screen (32 mutations) came back negative about 1.5 years ago. I look forward to getting a more comprehensive panel done when we get to a CF Center.
Danny has been very sick for the last 2 years with symptoms of constant fatigue, constant abdmonial pain, daily sore throats & body temperate issues, very freqent diarrhea; mouth sores, joint pain, reflux, etc. He was diagnosed with an atypical presentation of Crohn's just over a year ago as inflammation was noted on the biopsies throughout ...

Environment advice
Please, do not use bleach. It's very hard on the lungs. There is a product available that is non-toxic and very effective. It's called Concrobium. If you can stop the water coming in (through external temporary fix) and dry out the building materials quickly, then you can use the Concrobium rather than having to tear out things like wood. You can either spray it on, or you can get a fogger to fog the room area.
We had a leak and we dried things out carefully with a heater (be VERY careful about this and check it often - you don't want a fire), then applied a few different applications of concrobium on the framing lumber a...

Sorry to hear. Have you tried neurontin (gabapentin)? The other one that comes to mind is amitryptiline, which is a tricyclic antidepressant, but has has potent effects on pain fibers. I'm assuming advil or tylenol round the clock isn't touching the pain. You might ask about a more powerful NSAID, toradol, but it's really toxic to your kidneys, shouldn't be on it for more than a few days. But wow, in my experience, it's always provided the best analgesia for me.

I'd thought about it just because I've already had a very unfortunate car wreck occur where I really should have been injured if not killed (not my fault driver who died and hit me driving upwards of 140mp tested over .3 B.A.C. on toxicology) so I know it can happen but I'm just too afraid of people at meetings I go to seeing it or people at school friends that don't know etc. and considering how judged I've felt even from my family doc who's known me my entire life after I told him I was on bupe maintenance I'm not rea...

Help! Non-toxic flea solutions?
We had a beloved (and evidently flea-ridden!) cat pass away, right before we were out of town for two weeks during a hot spell. We came home to a house full of millions of very hungry fleas! We've washed bedding and upholstery and we've mopped and swept and vaccuumed over and over and over, and we've gotten down from tons of fleas to just a few every day - but a few is too many because they are biting my baby!

My 8 month old baby has CF and is (obviously!) a baby, so on both scores I don't want to subject her to toxic chemicals. The leading recommendation I have found for non-toxi...
