Timing of cancer radiation therapy may minimize hair loss, researchers say
(Salk Institute) Discovering that mouse hair has a circadian clock -- a 24-hour cycle of growth followed by restorative repair -- researchers suspect that hair loss in humans from toxic cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be minimized if these treatments are given late in the day. Tox Tunes #73: Hush Hush (Pistol Annies)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkvjhWirED8 In a recent post titled “Hashville Skyline”, Slate describes the way that references to marijuana has infiltrated into country music tracks over the last decade or so. In this single, from the Pistol Annies‘ new album Annie Up, one of the singers describes how she relieved the tension surrounding a drunken family Christmas dinner by sneaking out for some weed: So I snuck out behind the red barn And I took myself a toke Since everybody here hates everybody here Hell I might as well be the joke In future editions of “Tox Tunes”, we’ll visit som...

TCA overdose, toxic beer, and allegations of a mayor on crack: Weekly Web Review in Toxicology
Tricyclic Antidepressant Overdose – Over at EMCrit Blog, Scott Weingart has posted a superb podcast discussing the presentation and treatment of TCA overdose. Are vasopressors effective therapy in calcium channel blocker overdose?
4 out of 5 stars Critical Care Management of Verapamil and Diltiazem Overdose with a Focus on Vasopressors: A 25-Year Experience at a Single Center. Levine M et al. Ann Emerg Med 2013 May 1 {Epub ahead of print] Abstract This uncommonly interesting and thought-provoking study comes from the Department of Medical Toxicology at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. The authors note that in recent years, many toxicologists have suggested that hyperinsulinemic euglycemic therapy (HIT) is superior to vasopressors in the treatment of calcium channel blocker (CCB) toxicity. However, there have been no studies compari...

50 Shades of Pink—And Why It Helps to Know the Difference
Buy toxic chemicals and support breast cancer research! Not lying—just saw an ad on TV for weed killer and it had a pink ribbon logo on its packaging indicating, “A portion of every sale goes to support breast cancer research and awareness.” We have plenty of weed killer and a perfect lawn at our house, so I am no critic of the product. But have you noticed the pink ribbon logo on virtually every conceivable item or service? (Source: Cancer Network)

Sous Influences: Artists and Psychotropics
Sous Influences. DOCU. by lamaisonrouge Just returned from a short stay in Paris, where I saw the art exhibit Sous Influences (Under Influences: Artists and Psychotropics) at the Maison Rouge. Although somewhat disjointed and often lacking sufficient context, the show had a number of fascinating works, including Bryan Lewis Saunders‘ series of self-portraits done under the influence of different psychotropic drugs. Also mind-blowing — and somewhat reminiscent of the surrealist motion pictures of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali — was the film Images du Monde visionnaire, commissioned by the drug company Sandoz in...

Natural "Keystone Molecules" Punch over Their Weight in Ecosystems
Naturally occurring "keystone" molecules that have powerful behavioral effects on diverse organisms often play large but unrecognized roles in structuring ecosystems, according to a theory proposed in the June issue of BioScience. The authors of the theory, Ryan P. Ferrer of Seattle Pacific University and Richard K. Zimmer of the University of California at Los Angeles, liken such molecules to keystone species, animals or plants that may be uncommon but exert a controlling influence, through predation or in other ways. Keystone molecules function in chemical communication and defense, and likewise have dominant consequence...

Symbios Medical Products Issues Nationwide Recall of GOPump and GOBlock Kits
May 10, 2013 - Symbios Medical Products initiated a voluntary recall of all GoPump Rapid Recovery System kits and GOBlock Kits manufactured with flow control components assembled prior to July 2012. These products have been found to potentially cause excessively high flow rates, which presents a risk of patient toxicity and serious injury (e.g., seizure, dysrhythmia, death) due to the rapid influx of medication particularly in patients with low body mass or advanced age. What Precautions Should Be Used for a Child Whose Parent is Hepatitis C Positive?
Discussion Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a single-stranded RNA Flavivus that was first identified in 1989 and universal screening in the blood supply was begun in 1992 in the United States. Overall incidence of acute HCV in children under age 19 is 0.1 per 100,000. In adults, the transmission is mainly from contaminated blood and body fluids, primarily intravenous drug use. It is the most common reason for liver transplantation in adults. Of those that acquire the acute infection, about 70% go on to become chronically infected. Adults have a slow progression of their disease with 20% having cirrhosis within 20 years. Being ma...

Widespread PCB Pollution
Since polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are produced through industrial processes or activities, it is assumed that people living in industrial cities will have higher concentrations of these toxic chemicals in their blood than people in rural communities.
