Reducing emergency admissions: are we on the right track?
Regular readers will know that we often use this space to comment on the way that patients flow through the emergency department, whether they are discharged or admitted. In doing so we take note of (and occasionally pass comment on) the many and varied solutions put forward by different organisations to try and improve this problem. Medicines watchdog launches side effect campaign
The Yellow Card Scheme was introduced in 1964 following the Thalidomide tragedy and has proved to be a successful system for the early detection of emerging safety issues with medicines. It acts as an early warning system for identifying previously unrecognised adverse drug reactions, but also provides valuable information on recognised side effects. This allows the MHRA to identify and refine understanding of potential safety issues that may affect the treatment of patients. It is used to update prescribing advice for health professionals. New kidney disease profiles help CCGs drive up service quality
NHS Kidney Care has produced a kidney disease profile for each of the 211 CCGs. The profiles are intended to help CCGs and other stakeholders, such as GPs and service providers, assess local kidney care need and current service levels in order to inform planning. This will facilitate improvements where necessary in the quality and productivity of services for those with kidney disease.
A data guide has also been produced, which should be read alongside the profiles.

Report from Viper project on child disability
Sixteen young disabled researchers examined disabled children and young people’s participation and involvement in decision-making and the barriers that prevent them from having a say. The findings provide new evidence that disabled young people are being denied the right to have a say in how local services, such as education, health and leisure are being developed and delivered, and there is still a long way to go to make sure disabled young people can participate meaningfully in strategic and operational decisions about service development.

Together with the reforms set out in the draft Care and Support Bill, this at last offers the prospect of replacing the unfairness and confusion of the current system with a clearer framework that will enable people to plan ahe...
