New Orleans School Board Bans Teaching of Creationism
On 18 December 2012, the Orleans Parish School Board voted to ban the teaching of intelligent design in science classes and the purchasing of textbooks that promote creationism. The policy will only apply in the six schools run by the city’s local school board; other schools in New Orleans are run independently or by the state.
The policy does not appear to be prompted by any particular threat to the teaching of evolution. The vote was taken at the behest of Thomas Robichaux, the outgoing president of the board.
This is the second action taken in New Orleans in opposition to creationism. In 2011, the city council app...

Final Opportunity for Public Comment on Draft K-12 Science Education Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards represent a collaborative, state-led effort to develop science curriculum standards for grades K-12 across the nation. The arrangement of the most recent draft is similar to previous iterations. The standards are written as student performance expectations, which are grouped by topic, and by grade: K-5, middle school and high school. Each topic includes disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting, interdisciplinary concepts. Examples of biological standards include natural selection and adaptation, connections between organisms and ecosystems, growth an...

Fiscal Cliff Deal Delays Sequestration
The agreement reached by federal lawmakers on New Year’s Day (the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012) to avert the fiscal cliff was not the grand bargain that many had hoped for. Although the legislation made permanent many expiring tax cuts, the deal did not address the need to raise the debt limit or avert budget sequestration. Instead, action on those issues has been delayed for several months.
Congress allowed tax rates to increase for the first time in almost two decades by letting tax cuts expire for individuals who make more than $400,000 a year. The new tax rates will generate about $600 billion in new reve...

Creating an 'Oasis' for Syrian Refugees in a Jordanian Camp - 11 December 2012
ZA'ATARI CAMP, Jordan— Syrian refugees in this encampment have much to deal with: displacement, a fraying social fabric, insecurity, uncertainty and the tension that goes along with it all. But now they have a little oasis of calm. This week, a UNFPA-supported 'oasis' was launched at the camp, a safe space where women and girls can come together to talk about issues affecting them, and where activities such as art, craft making, skills training and awareness-raising discussions are organized.

We do not know her real name. But she was known to some as Nirbhaya, the 'fearless one' who valiantly fought her rapists, or Damini, the 'lightning' that struck the conscience of India—and the entire world. I share India’s angst at the death of the 23-year-old student savagely violated in New Delhi on 16 December. This incident lays bare an ugly truth that is relevant not only in India but in every country, every day: the rights and potential of every young girl are at risk from gender-based violence.

Asking for and giving help: we should do it more.
The other day, a colleague sent me an idea for a blog post. A friend of hers is newly pregnant and feeling yucky, and often wishes that someone would give up a seat for her on the T—but since she doesn’t have a visible belly yet they don’t, and she doesn’t feel comfortable asking. She’d heard that in London they have buttons that pregnant women can wear identifying them as pregnant even before they show—maybe I could write about that idea?
Here’s what I’d rather write about: I think she should ask for a seat.
