People outside their range
Hello everyone! My MCAT is in 3 days and I was wondering if everyone could let me know if they scored above, within, or below their practice AAMC range. I just finished AAMC's 7-11 and have a range of 29-32 with a composite low/high range of 26-35 (if you take highest and lowest scores of each section). I'm just nervous I won't be able to hit that 30 that everyone tries to achieve, and I'd like to see how many people do and don't fall within their range! Thanks for posting! Thomas Strouse named to new Maddie Katz Chair in Palliative Care Research and Education
Tomorrow will be better.   That thought carried Madelyn "Maddie" Katz through her final days before her untimely death from pancreatic cancer in 2009. It may well be the philosophy that motivated Maddie and her husband, Ronald Katz, longtime benefactors to UCLA, to name the waiting room for families whose loved ones are having surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center "Maddie's Room" and to found Operation Mend, a partnership between UCLA and the U.S. Army to provide reconstructive plastic surgery to military personnel wounded during service in Iraq and Afghanistan.   This generosity continued after Maddie's p...

Common gene known to cause inherited autism now linked to specific behaviors
The genetic malady known as Fragile X syndrome is the most common cause of inherited autism and intellectual disability. Brain scientists know the gene defect that causes the syndrome and understand the damage it does in misshaping the brain's synapses — the connections between neurons. But how this abnormal shaping of synapses translates into abnormal behavior is unclear.   Now, researchers at UCLA believe they know. Using a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome (FXS), they recorded the activity of networks of neurons in a living mouse brain while the animal was awake and asleep. They found that during both sleep a...

Bladder cancer recurrence and mortality could decline with better treatment compliance
This study highlights the need to comply with treatment guidelines to prevent recurrences by instilling anticancer agents inside the bladder and following patients more closely within the first two years of diagnosis."   The study was based on a nationwide sample of Medicare beneficiaries who had high-grade, non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer. "We have Level I evidence that demonstrates that a single instillation of chemotherapy into the bladder can minimize recurrences, and that six instillations can minimize recurrence and progression," Chamie said. "Efforts should be increased to offer patients intravesical t...

Fat chance: Scientists unexpectedly discover stress-resistant stem cells in adipose tissue
Researchers from the UCLA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology have isolated a new population of primitive, stress-resistant human pluripotent stem cells that are easily derived from fat tissue and are able to differentiate into virtually every cell type in the human body without genetic modification.   The cells, called multi-lineage stress-enduring stem cells from adipose tissue (Muse-AT), were discovered by "scientific accident" when a piece of equipment failed in the laboratory, killing all the stem cells in an experiment except the Muse-AT cells.   The UCLA team further discovered that not only are Muse-A...

MD PhD advice for nontrad track
Hi guys, new to the forums here. So I'm applying to MD/PhD programs this year and I was reading the forums to gauge my standing with regards to the other applicants, and it seems that my research background is quite solid. GPA: 3.74 (screwed up one semester due to family-related illness; otherwise a 3.92) MCAT: Work in progress. Course work (as if it matters): 5 classes at the graduate level, aced all of them Undergraduate Research: 1 summer, 2 semesters, got a first author in a crappy journal (ran out of time to do some experiments because of graduation and aforementioned illness) EDIT: I forgot, I have several poste...

Season of conception permanently written on DNA of rural Africans
In rural Gambia, seasonal variation in maternal nutrition causes infants born during the food-scarce rainy season to weigh 200 to 300 grams (7 to 10.5 ounces) less than babies born at other times of the year. Now, researchers led by Baylor College of Medicine and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have found that, depending on when a baby is conceived, this seasonal variation causes permanent changes to his or her epigenome, which controls how genes are expressed. A report on their research appears in the current issue of the open access journal PLoS Genetics . Variations in DNA methylation In particular, s...

Decisions based on GPA rather than experience
Hello! I will be starting my senior year of undergraduate studies for my Biology B.S. in August and won't graduate until May of 2014, so I have to wait and apply for the 2015 cycle. My studies are going really well - I have an overall and prereq 4.0 GPA with only one more prereq remaining. However, I have not started shadowing AT ALL. I have about a year to get experience, but coupled to being a full time student taking more upper level science courses, I won't be able to volunteer often. I see so many posters with over 2 years experience, and I wanted to kick myself for not looking for experience sooner. So, does anyone...

Question about retaking courses and addressing old grades
So I've read some mixed things about retaking grades after a certain point and was hoping for some help. I'm 25, currently in an MSPH program, several years out of undergrad. cGPA was 3.26, sGPA 3.0, microbiology major. Lots of BPCM credits unfortunately. Most of my GPA problems stem from a whole bunch of Cs and a C- sophomore year, but I had a strong upward trend junior and senior year. Question 1: Should I try and retake the OChem and Calc classes that I got Cs in? I had 4 semesters of mostly hard science classes after that are mostly As with some Bs, plus a good amount of graduate science classes I've done well in....

Quoted: Disclosing history of mental health issues
Quoted for a user (sent to me via PM): I have a confidential consult question. I am a current medical student that had some mental health issues during my senior year of college. I graduated without problems from undergrad, and took 2 years off to work before attending medical school. I have not had any mental health issues since, and stopped taking medication 6 months after graduating undergrad (1.5 years prior to entering medical school). My questions is this: will there ever be a time that I am required to disclose my mental health history to a state medical board or hospital? Specifically, I understand that the Geor...
