Establishment and serial passage of cell cultures derived from LuCaP xenografts
CONCLUSIONSThe ability to culture LuCaP cells affords new opportunities for fast, cheap, and efficient preclinical studies and extends the value of the LuCaP xenograft models. Prostate 9999: XX–XX, 2013. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (Source: The Prostate)

Hike in Prostate Cancer Tx Went to Wrong Men (CME/CE)
(MedPage Today) -- Older men with low-risk prostate cancer received increasingly aggressive treatment over a 10-year period, whereas practices did not change for men most likely to benefit from curative therapy, a study showed. (Source: MedPage Today Urology)

Cytoreductive radiofrequency ablation in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with small primary tumours treated with sunitinib or interferon‐α
Conclusions cRFA is a safe and effective approach for select patients with metastatic RCC treated with immunotherapy. The cRFA technique did not improve PFS in patients treated with sunitinib; cRFA probably has impact on OS in these patients. This needs to be tested in a larger trial. Sunitinib was effective in patients with metastatic RCC with unresected small primary tumours. (Source: BJU International)

TOOKAD® Soluble Vascular Targeted Photodynamic (VTP) therapy: determination of optimal treatment conditions and assessment of effects in patients with localised prostate cancer
ConclusionBiopsy data, post‐treatment dynamic contrast enhancement MRI at 1 week post‐VTP and analysis of the safety data have shown that 4 mg/kg TOOKAD® Soluble and 200 J/cm light are the optimal treatment conditions for the VTP procedure resulting in more than 80% patients treated with this regimen reporting a negative biopsy at Month 6. Overall, the treatment was well tolerated and exhibited early signs of efficacy for minimally invasive focal treatment of localised prostate cancer. (Source: BJU International)

Oxidative stress and other risk factors for white matter lesions in chronic hemodialysis patients.
Conclusions: Our results confirm that chronic HD patients have increased OS, but this is not related to the presence or severity of WML. PMID: 23743154 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Clinical Nephrology)

Trends in immediate perioperative morbidity and delay in discharge after open and minimally invasive radical prostatectomy (RP): a 20‐year institutional experience
Conclusions The clinical care pathway to discharge after RP has changed dramatically at our institution over the past 20 years. RALRP appears to result in a higher proportion of ‘off‐pathway’ patients, primarily due to ileus, compared with RRP and LRP. However, very few patients were discharged ‘off‐pathway’. FOXP3 and survival in urinary bladder cancer
CONCLUSIONS• FOXP3 expression in UBC cells is associated with decreased long‐term survival and thus may be a novel negative prognostic factor in UBC invading muscle.• By contrast, the presence of FOXP3+ tumour‐infiltrating lymphocytes was correlated with a positive prognosis. Because FOXP3 is up‐regulated upon activation in human T‐cells, FOXP3 may serve more as an activation marker than as a regulatory T‐cell indicator in this case.• These results support the need for larger prospective studies aiming to confirm the results obtained and to examine the underlying mechanisms in detail. Urinary and ejaculatory dysfunction induced by denervation of specific striated muscles anatomically related to the urethra in male rats
ConclusionsStriated muscles anatomically related to the urethra contribute differentially to the control of continence and expulsive urethral functions. Damages to the muscles or to their innervation, as may occur during pelvic surgery, would result in sexual and urinary dysfunctions. Neurourol. Urodynam. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Histological inflammation and risk of subsequent prostate cancer among men with initially elevated serum prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) concentration in the Finnish prostate cancer screening trial
Conclusions Histological inflammation in a prostate biopsy among men with an initial false‐positive screening test was not associated with an increased risk of subsequent PCa, but instead with a decreased risk which was of borderline significance. Inflammation in prostate biopsy is not a useful risk indicator in PCa screening. (Source: BJU International)

Retroperitoneal Plasmacytoma
An 80-year-old man presented with complaints of dysuria and low back pain that began without an antecedent event or injury. Medical history was significant for multiple myeloma diagnosed 3 years earlier. The back pain was severe at times, ranging from 2 to 7 on a 10-point scale, and was positional and localized to the lumbosacral region. The patient denied specific motor or sensory changes, and reported no fever or weight loss. (Source: The Journal of Urology)

Patient selection and pathological outcomes using currently available active surveillance criteria
Conclusions Active surveillance in patients with Gleason 3+4 presents a risk of missing unfavourable disease and should be limited to older patients with comorbidities. The differences in inclusion criteria between Gleason 6 protocols did not have a significant impact on the pathological results. (Source: BJU International)

Inhibitory role of the spinal cholinergic system in the control of urethral continence reflex during sneezing in rats
ConclusionsThese results indicate that an increase in endogenous ACh in the lumbosacral spinal cord inhibits the sneeze‐induced urethral continence reflex via activation of M2 and/or M3‐muscarinic receptors, implying the inhibitory role of spinal cholinergic pathways in the control of urethral continence reflex under stress conditions such as sneezing. [Hand-foot syndrome with tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy : Treatment recommendations.]
Abstract A significant component of advanced renal cell carcinoma therapy is treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Hand-foot syndrome is a frequent adverse reaction and the quality of life of patients can be considerably affected depending on the severity. Effective treatment options are, therefore, essential and standardization of treatment recommendations is desirable. In this article practical and standardized recommendations for the treatment of outpatients with hand-foot syndrome are introduced and several strategies for prophylaxis and therapy are discussed. Spatial distribution of positive cores improves the selection of patients with low‐risk prostate cancer as candidates for active surveillance
Conclusions Positive cores spatial distribution at biopsy should be considered, when advising patients about AS. The addition of this predictor to AS inclusion criteria can help identifying patients at a higher risk of progression, and reduce the rate of inappropriate surveillance of aggressive tumours. However, the most stringent AS criteria (namely John‐Hopkins criteria and Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance criteria) might not benefit from the addition of this predictor. This point warrants further investigation in future studies. (Source: BJU International)

[Testosterone deficiency - an underestimated risk for men? : Prevalence of hypogonadism.]
CONCLUSIONS: The data reveal high rates of testosterone deficiency in men independent of patient age. As decreased serum testosterone levels may be the consequence of several diseases and can be causally involved in the pathogenesis of further diseases, it is strongly recommended that serum testosterone measurement should be included in the diagnostic arsenal especially when symptoms, such as loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, lack of concentration, depression, lethargy, irritability and sleep disturbance are present.
