Schoolgirl dies after cancer jab
Tabs: cancer, HPV vaccine, vaccinations
Comment: American statistics (32 deaths and 772 reports of serious side effects so far) warned us that it was only a matter of time before we see some deaths in the UK, as in the USA, but I am so dreadfully sorry for this poor girl and her family. Not only that, but angry at the UK government that they can take a decision on people's lives like this, weighing up that some girls will likely die from this vaccine, but 'apparently' more saved. One life lost in this way is tragic and should never have happened.
The fact that girls have died from the HPV vaccine is kept from parents when they give consent to their daughters receiving... - September 28, 2009
Tips For Making Flu Shots Easier On Kids... And Parents
Tabs: health tips, vaccinations
Comment: Since I was always recommended to give my children a spoon of Calpol/Tylenol after their shots to keep any fever down as a result of their vaccines, I decided to instead start giving them the spoon of medicine about 45 minutes before the vaccine, thereby avoiding any fever in the first place and also reducing the pain felt at the time of the vaccine. Seemed like common sense to me and seemed to reduce any discomfort since they never cried when receiving injections after I started doing this (whereas they did before). Nice to read here that this approach is being recommended by professionals. - September 26, 2009
Study Reveals Serious HPV Vaccine Problems: Fainting, Blood Clots, Death Among Risks
Tabs: cancer, HPV vaccine, vaccinations
Comment: I researched this vaccine before deciding whether to allow my daughter to have it or not at her school. It seemed to me that when I did the calculations, there was a much greater risk of her suffering a serious reaction to the vaccine, than contracting HPV and then going on to develop cancer as a result of the virus 'within the time period that protection from the vaccine offered' (an important point that I think is overlooked when calculating how many lives will be saved compared to the risk of the vaccine). It is unclear as to the exact time for which the vaccine offers protection, but it is not guaranteed for more than ... - September 16, 2009
Survey of Spanish docs online
Tabs: technology
Comment: Like it or not, patients will look increasingly to the Internet for information on their own conditions. Better to get used to the idea and move with the times than resist change like a stick in the mud. Don't like it? Get over it and work out how you are going to deal with, and work with, the changing times.
Doctors have to get comfortable with very well informed (as well as misinformed) patients, and learn to work with their patients, guiding them where appropriate. Gone are the days that you can dish out prescriptions that are accepted without question. Accept that everything you do will be questioned and verified, a... - September 3, 2009

White Tea Could Keep You Healthy And Looking Young
Tabs: cancer, health tips
Comment: Great! I love a cuppa (or several), helps me concentrate when I am coding for MedWorm. I knew about the benefits of green tea, but didn't know that white tea may be even more beneficial. I'll certainly be heading over to the supermarket tomorrow with white tea on my shopping list. - August 18, 2009

Has swine flu started to mutate?
Tabs: swine flu
Comment: I was wondering if the quantity of the virus with which you get infected may have a difference on the severity of your illness. This interesting article suggests that it may.
When a head teacher in the US died of the illness I wondered whether being a head teacher at a school where there was a significant outbreak he had been in contact with a massive dose of the virus which may have effected his outcome.
This makes me think that taking extra care with cleanliness is important even if you think that contamination is inevitable, since at least you may minimise any does of this illness that you do eventually get. It a... - July 15, 2009
First 'healthy' swine flu death
Tabs: swine flu
Comment: I find it frustrating that very little information is released about the fatalities and serious cases (either here in the UK or elsewhere). I understand that there is an issue of patient confidentiality, but it may help to prevent such cases if we all knew a little more.
We don’t need to know who this patient was, for example, but it would be useful know how long they were ill, and at what point medical help was sought. Do we, for example, need to be most watchful when symptoms start, or a week into the illness, or with the prolonged cases where people are taking longer to get better? And clearly when do we need to se... - July 10, 2009

Middle age 'key for exercising'
Tabs: health tips
Comment: Hey this is great, so I live like a couch potato until I'm 50, and start exercising then, and I'll live just as long as those who have been doing it all their lives (but I guess I might not then make it to 50!) - March 6, 2009
Daily Thoughts
Tabs: health tips
Comment: Yes it is a simple but important message that I think we are all in need of reminding at times. Not only could it make their day, but you never know, it could be their last day.
Now here's a story that I know to be true. A father went to work forgetting to say 'goodbye' to his young son, who was very upset. So much so, that the mother called up her husband at work and he then returned home especially to say goodbye to him. He then went back to work and died of a heart attack.
This is a sad but very poignant story, and honestly a true one (I heard it from a lady who knew the family well). I always keep this in mind wh... - December 4, 2008

Comment: I've never had to perform CPR, but always wondered if I was faced with the situation whether I would know how fast to go. Fantastic, now I know all I would have to do is sing 'Stayin Alive' in my head and I'd be right! - October 19, 2008
Britain’s Thatcher Has Dementia
Tabs: dementia
Comment: Whilst I was never a big Margaret Thatcher fan, I do feel for her, Carol and the rest of her family on hearing this sad news. It reminds me of Ronald Regan, her old friend, suffering a similar fate. It was just recently that I became aware that my Nan too is suffering from dementia, having invited her to stay at my house for a week, and seeing how terribly confused and worried she became. For the first time in my life I was made aware of just what a terrbile experience it is for for someone to start loosing their memory, no matter what age they are, and the impact that this has on family members, expecially their children w... - August 26, 2008

Shoppers Drug Mart / Wal Mart Introduce New Acne Rosacea Breakthrough
Tabs: replies
Comment: Many thanks for rightly pointing out the questionable credibility of the article here, but it is not actually from a medical journal - if you look at the 'Source Type' in MedWorm you can see it is listed as 'News', not 'Journals'. If you want to find results just from medical journals you can do so in MedWorm by ensuring that just the 'Journals' option box is selected when searching. MedWorm includes many sources from medical journals, but also news releases (which this one is), organisational reports, information from respected health websites, etc, to give you an overview of what is being said about any medical topic on ... - February 18, 2008
