Link Between Long Term Mobile Phone Use And Brain Tumours
Tabs: cancer
Comment: Mobile phone use linked to brain cancers - again. I wonder what risk there is for breast cancer with all the young teenage girls now carrying their phones in their bras? (yes, if you have a teenage daughter - that IS where most of them carry it - my teenage daughter, the only one in her school of 1000 not to have a phone before 16, told me that). - June 18, 2011
Green Tea Compound May Fight Leukemia
Tabs: cancer, medworm hints
Comment: I found out a few days ago that a friend has been diagnosed with leukemia. This morning I woke up remembering a newspaper article that I read about 5 years ago that reported a case of someone with leukemia apparently being cured by drinking large quantities of green tea, so I looked up the topic on MedWorm by doing the following search +"green tea" +leukemia and I found several reports researching this topic, including this one which shows promise for patients with early stage CLL. - January 2, 2011
Video: Caffeine Good for the Brain?
Tabs: dementia, health tips, medworm hints
Comment: I didn't know this. Ran a search in MedWorm to check the evidence, try the following query with the 'All Words' option selected:
+(coffee caffeine) +(Alzheimer* dementia)
This will return all records where either the word coffee or caffeine exists, plus either the word Alzheimer's or dementia.
After running the query, clicking on the 'By Date' tab gives you the records in order of date rather than relevance, which I always find handy when doing some medical research.
Seems there's a fair bit of evidience, been around for a while, funny how it takes a small video clip on CBS to make something like this well known.

Deodorant 'may be linked to breast cancer'
Tabs: cancer
Comment: Update: I'm still on the search for a safe yet effective deodorant. The last 'aluminium free' one I was using wasn't really that effective. I thought I had found a really good 'all natural' one just recently that I thought contained no aluminium, - of course aluminium is natural so a claim that something is 'all natural' actually means very little. However I found that my new deodorant but does instead contain 'potassium alum' which seems to be related to aluminium - although it appears there is the argument that it is safer, in particular due to it being less likely to be absorbed. There is an interesting discussion on th... - September 13, 2010
Experiment gives dad time
Tabs: cancer, vaccinations, wow
Comment: An exciting prospect - a custom-made vaccine to fight cancer, in this case a glioblastoma, made from the tumour that was removed from the patient. Seems to be buying time for this father - a touching story, I wish him all the best, as well as the other 7 patients in this clinical trial. - September 13, 2010
Vaccine Zombie hip hop song questions safety of flu season vaccinations
Tabs: vaccinations
Comment: Hilarious. Go have a look at this video, which will surely go viral. Whether you are in the pro or anti vaccine camp (or somewhere in between as I am) this video will surely generate discussion and debate, and a few laughs, which has to be a good thing. Kind of weird timing the release, what with the breaking of the news regarding the investigation of a possible link of the swine flu jab to cases of narcolepsy (I wonder if that was a conspiracy? Just joking.) - September 3, 2010
Popping Pills A Popular Way To Boost Brain Power
Tabs: addiction
Comment: I am quite shocked to read the statistics of the number of academics using neuro stimulants to boost their brain power. I think this is a very worrying trend that the universities should be looking to come down hard against, with a zero tolerance policy. Students should not be able to gain an unfair advantage through the taking of drugs - this is no different to drugs being taken to enhance sporting abilities. In addition the long term side effects of these drugs being used in this way is unknown. The American authorities would do well to address this issue with urgency before it becomes a problem out of control (which fro... - April 30, 2010

Schoolgirl dies after cancer jab
Tabs: cancer, HPV vaccine, vaccinations
Comment: American statistics (32 deaths and 772 reports of serious side effects so far) warned us that it was only a matter of time before we see some deaths in the UK, as in the USA, but I am so dreadfully sorry for this poor girl and her family. Not only that, but angry at the UK government that they can take a decision on people's lives like this, weighing up that some girls will likely die from this vaccine, but 'apparently' more saved. One life lost in this way is tragic and should never have happened.
The fact that girls have died from the HPV vaccine is kept from parents when they give consent to their daughters receiving... - September 28, 2009
Tips For Making Flu Shots Easier On Kids... And Parents
Tabs: health tips, vaccinations
Comment: Since I was always recommended to give my children a spoon of Calpol/Tylenol after their shots to keep any fever down as a result of their vaccines, I decided to instead start giving them the spoon of medicine about 45 minutes before the vaccine, thereby avoiding any fever in the first place and also reducing the pain felt at the time of the vaccine. Seemed like common sense to me and seemed to reduce any discomfort since they never cried when receiving injections after I started doing this (whereas they did before). Nice to read here that this approach is being recommended by professionals. - September 26, 2009
Study Reveals Serious HPV Vaccine Problems: Fainting, Blood Clots, Death Among Risks
Tabs: cancer, HPV vaccine, vaccinations
Comment: I researched this vaccine before deciding whether to allow my daughter to have it or not at her school. It seemed to me that when I did the calculations, there was a much greater risk of her suffering a serious reaction to the vaccine, than contracting HPV and then going on to develop cancer as a result of the virus 'within the time period that protection from the vaccine offered' (an important point that I think is overlooked when calculating how many lives will be saved compared to the risk of the vaccine). It is unclear as to the exact time for which the vaccine offers protection, but it is not guaranteed for more than ... - September 16, 2009
Survey of Spanish docs online
Tabs: technology
Comment: Like it or not, patients will look increasingly to the Internet for information on their own conditions. Better to get used to the idea and move with the times than resist change like a stick in the mud. Don't like it? Get over it and work out how you are going to deal with, and work with, the changing times.
Doctors have to get comfortable with very well informed (as well as misinformed) patients, and learn to work with their patients, guiding them where appropriate. Gone are the days that you can dish out prescriptions that are accepted without question. Accept that everything you do will be questioned and verified, a... - September 3, 2009

White Tea Could Keep You Healthy And Looking Young
Tabs: cancer, health tips
Comment: Great! I love a cuppa (or several), helps me concentrate when I am coding for MedWorm. I knew about the benefits of green tea, but didn't know that white tea may be even more beneficial. I'll certainly be heading over to the supermarket tomorrow with white tea on my shopping list. - August 18, 2009

Has swine flu started to mutate?
Tabs: swine flu
Comment: I was wondering if the quantity of the virus with which you get infected may have a difference on the severity of your illness. This interesting article suggests that it may.
When a head teacher in the US died of the illness I wondered whether being a head teacher at a school where there was a significant outbreak he had been in contact with a massive dose of the virus which may have effected his outcome.
This makes me think that taking extra care with cleanliness is important even if you think that contamination is inevitable, since at least you may minimise any does of this illness that you do eventually get. It a... - July 15, 2009
First 'healthy' swine flu death
Tabs: swine flu
Comment: I find it frustrating that very little information is released about the fatalities and serious cases (either here in the UK or elsewhere). I understand that there is an issue of patient confidentiality, but it may help to prevent such cases if we all knew a little more.
We don’t need to know who this patient was, for example, but it would be useful know how long they were ill, and at what point medical help was sought. Do we, for example, need to be most watchful when symptoms start, or a week into the illness, or with the prolonged cases where people are taking longer to get better? And clearly when do we need to se... - July 10, 2009
Obama makes $10bn pledge to find cure for global killer 'in our time'

Miracle surgery: Girl 'fantastic' after 6 organs removed, replaced

Comment: What an incredible story and what a beautiful little girl. Who wouldn't go to the lengths of the earth to save such an angel? But what a huge responsibility to carry out such an operation. My heart goes out to them all. - March 9, 2009
