            <title>Look at the big girl</title>
            <link>http://eleanorbrogan.blogspot.com/2008/07/look-at-big-girl.html</link>
<description>We used the vacation as the end of our time with Ellie in a crib and went cold turkey when we got home with her newest fascination-A Big Girl Bed!This has been in the works for a while now ever since Ellie started to show interest in climbing out of her crib. As soon as she started climbing Abby and I have had nightmares of Ellie jumping out of her crib but leaving her pumps on the wrong side of the crib. Putting the crib against the wall made things better but it was just time to get her into the next bed.So now we are having entirely new nightmares about Ellie falling out of bed or deciding to go for a walk but leaving her pumps behind. So far she has been great at staying in her bed for us and her pumps are off the pole in at the foot of her bed to make them more flexible but we know that this won't last for long.So for now one or both of us jump whenever we hear her make a noise. Sort of like the first nights home with her.Speaking of which, Tyler April, Ellie's cousin who was born May 23rd at 28 weeks (2 pounds 13.8 ounces), went home today just north of 5 1/2 pounds. Thinking of those first few nights at home makes me want to throw up a little bit. We know that Ben and Sharron will do well with him and that home will do well with him as well. Congratulations. <link>http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/diet-blog/~3/338847640/mobile_veggies_coming_soon_to_your_neighborhood.php</link>
<description>Health experts often blame poor neighborhood's inaccessibility to healthy food--like fruits and vegetables--for their community's declining health. In May, The New York Times reported that supermarkets are leaving areas like Queens and Harlem, making it difficult for residents to find fresh food within walking distance of their homes.

That's why the Veggie Mobile is a great idea! The Veggie Mobile is a basically a farmers market on wheels. Serving neighborhoods around Albany, New York, the Veggie Mobile sells wholesale produce to low-income communities and senior living communities. Continue reading... <description>Ellie had her first clinic appointment since March today and that was the common comment from every single doctor, nurse, and specialist that saw her or discussed her progress. Every single person that we met said this to us like we had won something or that we were at the end of something which seemed a bit weird to me. I wanted to stop and tell them that we aren't even close to the finish line even though she looks so good and is so happy and healthy. The numbers:She is still growing well 75th percentile for height and weight. her wardrobe of outgrown clothes told us this a long time ago but it is nice to hear it officially. She has progressed on her formula and solid food eating . Right now her pump is set to 37 ml/hour and all told she gets just about a liter (1000 ml) of elecare each day. On top of that she eats three good meals a day and some snacks. This was all great news to the nutritionist and got a solid wow when reviewed Ellie's diet with us.All of this means that we are losing a night of TPN next week and we are back to 4 nights a week of TPN and three of dextrose. We are keeping the increased volume in there for the summer to keep her hydrated but the calories will continue to be pared down. Her labs all look good which means that her nutrition is good and she is well balanced. We like a well balanced kid. What's next:We are still waiting for the bowel motility study that was cancelled in May when Ellie got admitted with the gut bug. The Dr. who does the study is very busy and we got sent to the back of the line when she cancelled. We are going to push to get this done and gets some kind of an answer about why it takes glycerin to make her poop.If all goes well witht he study (called manometry) we will probably think about reconnection sometime this fall. Yeah, yeah. heard that one before. No hurry here to get it done. we'd rather wait than rush into it and have to reverse course. We're getting good at ostomy changes anyway. So the take home message is keep doing what we are doing and bring her back in a month or so to see about progressing towards more TPN-free nights.I think that they just like seeing her dance down the hallway. <title>A poem about chronic pain: searching for healing?</title>
            <link>http://blog.healthtalk.com/chronic-pain/life-with-chronic-pain/a-poem-about-chronic-pain-searching-for-healing/</link>
            <description>Searching for Healing?
I don’t know what works for you
Sunshine on a cloudy day?
Is it the warmth-like passion,
Of a luminous solar ray?
Maybe it’s the odor
Of freshly baking bread,
That crawls up your nose
And bursts in your head?
I don’t know what works for you
I rarely know what helps me,
But certain elements bring strength
In a life desperate for glee.
A funny slapstick movie,
A Donald Duck cartoon,
A childhood “funny bone” memory
A cow jumping over the moon?
I don’t know what works for you
But I know laughter explodes like a bomb
Just don’t take pain too seriously
As it may rob you of all your aplomb.
There are some wonders of nature
Which behave like a miracle drug.
They occur when you least expect it
Like an impetuous warm hug.
I don’t know what works for you
But there are experiences we share
Like the courage it takes each day
To face all that we must bear.
A child dripping water from a pool?
Your spouse laughing out loud?
A Shasta daisy bursting with bloom
As if it’s satiated and proud?
I don’t know what works for you
But I know we both have pain
As we search for meaning in our lives
So all this won’t be in vane.
A grandchild who expresses herself
By constantly saying, “Oh, phooey!”
Or a warm, chocolate devil’s food cake
With frosting hot, drippy and gooey?
I’m thinking of you while you search
‘Cause I’ll be searching, too,
For healing elements hidden in life
Which are sometimes in plain view.

<description>ADDitude magazine, the leading publication for families and adults living with attention deficit disorder (ADHD), today released an expert report on the non-medical treatment of ADHD symptoms. Top ADHD doctors and treatment specialists contributed to the free ADDitude Guide to Alternative ADHD Treatment (available online at http://www.adhdreports.com/alternative-adhd-treatment/), which investigates and clearly explains the benefits and risks of natural ADHD therapies like fish oil.
For the nearly 2 million parents of American children diagnosed ADHD, Adderall, Strattera and Ritalin are household names - familiar and well-documented treatments for ADHD symptoms. Natural ADHD treatments like neurofeedback, working-memory treatment and omega-3 fatty acids may be less recognizable, but are they any less effective in combating distractibility and impulsivity? <description>Us guys can be pretty daft...at least when it comes to our health. June 9th to June 15th was men's health week and it is as good a time as any for us men to take an honest look at ourselves and ask: Am I healthy? If the answer is &quot;no&quot;, &quot;not as healthy as I could be&quot;, or &quot; Are you kidding - I played football in high school&quot;, it may be time to figure out how you can answer that question with a confident &quot;yes&quot;.

Here are some less-than-cheery facts about men's health that can hopefully act as a wake-up call.

            <link>http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/lifewithadhdfeed/~3/337590305/adhd-kids-find-relief-in-video-games-study-claims.php</link>
<description>A first-of-its-kind survey is bringing great news to parents and children alike indicating that certain types of video games appear to have a therapeutic effect on ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
According to the survey conducted by Information Solutions Group on behalf of PopCap Games, &amp;#8220;casual&amp;#8221; video games appear to lessen symptoms of ADHD by increasing attention span, providing stress relief, and improving memory strength and focus. Moreover, because of the increased sense of accomplishment experienced in playing the games, survey respondents reported enjoying this form of therapy.
Dr. Carl Arinoldo, a Stony Brook, New York-based psychologist of 25 years&amp;#8217; experience comments, &amp;#8220;It seems that children with AD/HD often lack that sense of control that comes much more easily to their non-AD/HD peers. Playing casual games such as Peggle and Bejeweled, among others, is one area in their lives in which these children can experience some sense of control with the added benefit of achieving success in something. Both of these aspects, taken together, can serve to enhance the child&amp;#8217;s self-concept and self-esteem.&amp;#8221; (more&amp;#8230;)

            <title>Healthy recipe: grilled summer veggies</title>
            <link>http://blog.healthtalk.com/multiple-sclerosis/life-with-ms/healthy-recipe-grilled-summer-veggies/</link>
<description>Summer? Check. Veggies? Check. Grill? Check. Put them together and what do you get? Grilled Summer Veggies!
Let’s face it folks (with all respect to our friends Down Under) summer is in full swing! The kitchen is too hot to spend even a few minutes sweltering in. We want to spend as little time on meal prep as possible. The garden will soon be yielding far more bounty than one can consume.
What to do?
I’ve found one of the simplest and most adaptable methods of preparing fresh from the garden vegetables. All it takes is a hot grill, a few summer vegetables and a little bit of salad dressing for flavor and oil.
Grilled Summer Vegetables
Assortment of Summer Veggies (zucchini, yellow squash, bell peppers, eggplant, sweet onions, asparagus, beans, whatever else you may have) sliced if needed into ¼ to ½ inch thick slices.
Your favorite vinaigrette salad dressing (I change this up for desired flavors; sesame/ginger for Asian flavors, Italian red wine for, well, Italian food and Red Pepper/Feta for a Mediterranean nod).
Toss the veggies in enough of the dressing to coat well (about ¼ cup per half pound of veggies usually works for me) and let them sit, tossing occasionally, for about 20 minutes; about the time it will take for the grill to heat. RESERVE THE MARINATE!
Grill the veggies on each side over a medium-hot grill until they are marked to your liking. Remove and place on a serving platter. Stir that leftover marinate (maybe add a little lemon juice to it) and drizzle over your grilled masterpiece. I sometimes sprinkle a bit of appropriate herbs from the herb pots that I keep by my grills for that special “chef’s” touch.
THAT’S IT!
Enjoy this dish as a side or a main. It’s easy, fun and for many a whole new way to get your five-a-day!
Wishing you and your family the best of health.
Cheers,
Trevis (Source: Life with MS) </description>

            <title>What it’s like to be pregnant with crohn’s disease</title>
            <link>http://blog.healthtalk.com/life-with-crohns/kelly/what-its-like-to-be-pregnant-with-crohns-disease/</link>
<description>Since I was talking about my daughter last week, I thought that I would continue that theme this week and tell you about my pregnancy.
We had only been married for three months and never planned to have a baby so quickly. In fact, we were going to wait two years to get accustomed to being married while we investigated the risks associated with having Crohn’s disease and being pregnant.
The year of our wedding, I was really adamant about getting off the steroids and not being fat-faced for my wedding day. I had been recovering from a flare when he proposed and when he told me he wanted to get married in six months, the only thing I could think of was &amp;#8220;how will I ever get low enough on the prednisone to look normal for my wedding?” But I did it! I managed to get down to 5 mg and was able to look like myself. After the wedding, I continued to get lower dosages of prednisone and got all the way to 2.5 mg. I was in remission and feeling good.
I was surprised that I got pregnant so easily; I thought that I would be more infertile since I had been on prednisone and Imuran for a long time already. I had not started birth control yet because I already had so many problems with hormones with the prednisone and was worried about adding more hormones from the birth control. We used the Catholic method – which is probably why we got pregnant so quickly (just joking!).
I worried about the pregnancy because I didn’t know that I was pregnant until she was six weeks old and I had been taking all of my regular medications (prednisone, Imuran, Nasacort) until then. I was also taking a little bit (like a fourth) of a sleeping pill – and luckily was weaning off of it. So, I worried about hurting the baby since the first six weeks are supposed to be the most important for the baby’s cell growth. Despite all of this, she came out just perfect!
Of course, I had to stop Imuran (azathioprine), Nasacort (triamcinolone acetate) and the sleeping pills, but I continued to take the prednisone at a lower dose. Prednisone does not cross the placenta so it wasn’t that big of a problem. I have never felt better in my whole life; the pregnancy was perfect. My Crohn’s went into remission and I didn’t need that much medicine. I made sure I exercised and ate really healthy so I could stay in remission and be healthy for our baby.
The mother’s immune system will naturally lower itself so that it does not reject the fetus growing inside it. Apparently, the more foreign the baby’s DNA is to the mother’s, the lower the mother’s immune system drops. Since I was feeling so great, I figured that the baby would have a lot of my husband’s qualities. And, she does look just like him (luckily! He has really great tan skin, unlike my pasty translucent white.)
My OB/GYN loved me because I never complained and was always so happy. Any small amount of discomfort was nothing compared to the problems caused by my Crohn’s. I was happy as a lark to be in remission and to feel so good. I mean, of course I did have some discomfort as she grew but still, it wasn’t all that bad and was way more manageable than my Crohn’s disease.
I have read that if you get pregnant while you are in remission, you will have the highest chances of having a good pregnancy. But, a lot of patients flare when the baby is around 2-3 months old due to the changes in hormones (your body is going back to pre-pregnancy state). So, the healthier you are when you conceive, the better. I have also understood that if your disease is active when you conceive, you will likely flare during the pregnancy and if you conceive when you are healthy – you may make it all the way with no problems and flare during postpartum (like me) or you may not flare at all.
I started to flare about a month after she was born. I was determined to breast feed for three months and only made that marker by pumping like crazy before I had to start back on all of my medications. I ended up going into the hospital for a little over a week – over the 2000 New Year’s holiday. It was a really difficult time because I was still working and had a baby who was hungry all of the time (every 1.5 to 2 hours) and a husband who was getting his master’s degree. I was also getting certified to be a flight controller so I was pretty busy. Looking back, I am not sure how I managed it all and it makes me appreciate that I had my daughter young because I can’t imagine doing all that now. That was also during a time when I still hadn’t accepted my Crohn’s disease and would fight it every step of the way. I still fight it but I think I flow with it a little more now.
God gave me the best present of my life when he gave me my daughter. That was the perfect time for me to get pregnant – health wise - and I have not had another slot available since then due to active disease or medications (such as methotrexate) where they tell you that you can not get pregnant and to use two birth control methods. God knew that I would not have another chance, so he gave us a daughter when he knew the time was right. And I am so very thankful because she is the best thing that has ever happened to me and she brings such joy. She is my little stress reliever because when I come home from work I focus my attention on her until she goes to bed since I have missed out on her throughout the day. It is nice to have a distraction from work and from myself.
