Scil Technology GmbH, a German biopharmaceutical development company, and Medtronic’s biologics company, based in Memphis, TN, are partnering in an effort to develop new treatment options for periodontal and bone regeneration. Scil Technology will bring rhGDF-5, a human growth factor, and R&D to the table, while Medtronic will oversee clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and commercialization of the final product. With about a million people who need dental restoration or periodontal therapy, the results of the partnership will help many patients who have unmet needs in this area. Dentists will have more options on how to improve overall oral health.

3m to acquire imtec corp.

Here is the press release.

Because of our existing relationship, a relationship we value and want to
continue to strengthen, we wanted you to know that 3M announced today that
it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire IMTEC Corp., a manufacturer
of dental implants and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning
equipment for dental and medical radiology headquartered in Ardmore,
Oklahoma.
This acquisition gives 3M access to two of the fastest growing segments in
the dental industry. “Our combined digital products and expertise will
enable a digital ‘total restorative’ approach with more options than ever,
including IMTEC implants, 3MTM ESPETM LavaTM crowns, and 3M’s advanced
digital workflow solutions,” said Jeffrey Lavers, vice president and
general manager, 3M ESPE. “Together, we will have an end-to-end
implantology solution, making the process easier, faster and better for
dentists everywhere.”
Like most companies in the implant space, the IMTEC business is a direct
business model. We plan to maintain that approach with this business.
IMTEC will operate as a stand alone subsidiary. This acquisition does not
impact our commitment to continue to work with you in serving the dental
market and exploring ways to strengthen our relations. It does not affect
any other aspect of our current business with you.

California supreme court overturns gay marriage ban - the response

California Supreme Court Justices, from top left, Kathryn Mickle Werdegar, Carlos R. Moreno, Joyce L. Kennard, Marvin Baxter and from lower left, Ming Chin, Chief Justice Ronald M. George and Carol Corrigan
With today’s California Supreme Court ruling overturning a ban on gay marriage, the reaction and response has been swift and pointed.
From the Left:
Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles
We are delighted with today’s State Supreme Court ruling allowing marriage equality in California. It is a true testament to advancing equality and to recognizing the right of all Californians to build a future with the person they love. We recently lost Mildred Loving, the woman whose marriage to a man of another race ushered in the Supreme Court ruling that made marriage colorblind. Today’s ruling is another important reminder that love will overcome.
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland:
I’m glad the Supreme Court validated what I consider a fundamental premise of our nation – that all people deserve equal protection under the law. This is a happy and historic day because all Californians, regardless of sexual orientation, now have the right to marry.
Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party:
The California Supreme Court’s ruling is a momentous decision for our state and nation that marks a giant step toward in our march toward true equality for all our citizens.
We all owe Mayor Gavin Newsom a debt of gratitude for his visionary leadership on this crucial civil rights issue, along with the courageous plaintiffs in this case.
But our march for justice and equality is far from over. We now must re-focus our efforts on fighting the divisive and discriminatory proposed constitutional amendment that would take away marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Working together, we can ensure that once again, justice and equality will prevail.
From the Right:
Assembly Republican leader Mike Villines, R-Clovis:
I am very disappointed that the California Supreme Court, by the narrowest of margins, would allow their own personal partisan views to get in the way of their duty to uphold the rule of law by thwarting the will of the overwhelming majority of Californians who voted in support of Proposition 22.
Fortunately, more than 1 million Californians have signed ballot petitions to place a constitutional amendment before the voters this November that will write into the state Constitution that marriage should be between one man and one woman. I am confident that the people of California will again overwhelmingly vote to preserve and protect traditional marriage.
I hope that once this constitutional amendment becomes law in November, the Supreme Court will resume its appropriate role of interpreting the law, and stop legislating from the bench.
Senate Republican leader Dave Cogdill, R-Modesto:
California voters spoke loud and clear that they believe marriage is between a man and a woman. This disappointing ruling gives activist judges a louder voice than the people of this great state. A constitutional amendment to overturn this ruling will now undoubtedly qualify for the ballot, giving Californians another opportunity to maintain the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
Ron Nehring, chairman of California Republican Party:
Once again, the California Supreme Court has substituted its own will for the will of the people, this time with its controversial decision discarding the mandate for traditional marriage granted with Proposition 22 and thrusting this issue back into the national spotlight. Support for traditional marriage transcends partisanship.
The state Republican Party has consistently supported traditional marriage and Proposition 22. In September, the state committee will formally take a position on the November initiative reversing this ruling by state constitutional amendment.
So, where does the issue go from here. In a few weeks the California Secretary of State will either certify the California Initiative and Consitutional Amendment 07-0098 or not. More than 1.1 million signatures of California voters have been submitted to place the issue of gay marriage before the general election electorate.
When certified this initiative/constitutional amendment, the California Marriage Protection Act will go before voters in November. If the California Marriage Protection Act passes the gay marriage ban will once more be the law of California. Marriage will be defined as between a man and a woman.
But, there is more.
Flap heard today on the Hugh Hewitt Show that there will be a concerted effort by the Evangelical Right and others to recall the three Supreme Court Justices up for a reconfirmation vote in 2010 (even though one dissented in today’s opinion)
Here is the organizational chart as to when California Supreme Court Justices come up for reconfirmation. Each Justice serves a twelve year term, unless appointed midterm of another Justice.

Two of the three California Supreme Court Justices, Chief Justice Ronald George and Associate Justice Carlos Moreno will be undoubtedly be the focus of a 2010 recall or anti-reconfirmation action. But, like with the Rose Bird recall “clean sweep” over the issue of the California Death Penalty, Associate Justice Ming Chin will probably be a target as well. It will be hard to protect him from the wrath of the voters.
Flap has faith in the People of California to RIGHT the actions of four rogues justices who have abrogated the will of California voters.
Dan Weintraub has the take on the prospects of the coming fall election.
Flap will be voting and campaigning for the California Marriage Protection Act and also supporting the non re-confirmation of Justices George and Moreno.
Stay tuned as the election begins to take shape in the coming weeks.

Joe lieberman watch: the president got it exactly right

Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) speaks his mind regarding direct talks with Iran with E.D. Hill on Fox News
And, John McCain agrees.
Senator John McCain, who has been critical of President Bush on the environment and other policies this week, on Thursday morning wholeheartedly endorsed Mr. Bush’s veiled rebuke in the Israeli Knesset of Senator Barack Obama that talking to “terrorists and radicals’’ was no different than appeasing Hitler and the Nazis.
“Yes, there have been appeasers in the past, and the president is exactly right, and one of them is Neville Chamberlain,’’ Mr. McCain told reporters on his campaign bus after a speech in Columbus, Ohio. “I believe that it’s not an accident that our hostages came home from Iran when President Reagan was president of the United States. He didn’t sit down in a negotiation with the religious extremists in Iran, he made it very clear that those hostages were coming home.’’
Asked if he thought that former President Jimmy Carter, who struggled with the hostage crisis, was an appeaser, Mr. McCain replied: “I don’t know if he was an appeaser or not, but he terribly mishandled the Iranian hostage crisis.’’
Jimmy Carter botched the Iranian hostage crisis and disgraced the United States. He continues to be a disgrace.
Barack Obama is NO different than Carter in this matter. The Obama policy of unconditional talks with Iran’s Ahmadinejad: “Speak softly and let your enemies beat you with your own stick.”
Asked if he thought Mr. Obama was an appeaser — the Democratic candidate has said he would be willing to meet with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran — Mr. McCain sidestepped and said, “I think that Barack Obama needs to explain why he wants to sit down and talk with a man who is the head of a government that is a state sponsor of terrorism, that is responsible for the killing of brave young Americans, that wants to wipe Israel off the map, who denies the Holocaust. That’s what I think Senator Obama ought to explain to the American people.’’
The Team Obama response is here. And, the Democrat Party cover Obama’s ass response is here.
The Fall Presidential debates WILL be interesting.
Now, will Hillary weigh into this flap? (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

California supreme court overturns gay marriage ban

Winning Plaintiffs & attorney in CA Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage decision. Rev. Troy Perry & husband Phillip Ray De Blieck, Robin Tyler & Diane Olson and their attorney Gloria Allred holding Baby Milo Reifsnyder-Smith, son of 2 gay dads
A split (4-3 decision) California Supreme Court this morning overturned the ban on Gay Marriage that California voters approved by a 61% majority in 2000 in the California Defense of Marriage Act.
The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be permitted to marry, rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.
The state high court’s 4-3 ruling was unlikely to end the debate over gay matrimony in California. A group has circulated petitions for a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution to block same-sex marriage, while the Legislature has twice passed bills to authorize gay marriage. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed both.
The issue may be settled to the glee of California homosexual rights organizations today but 27 states have constitutional bans on the practice. And, this fall, California voters may be asked again to weigh into the fray with the California Initiative and Consitutional Amendment 07-0098, should it qualify for the ballot.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has already stated he will not support the initiative. But, the Evangelical Right, conservative organizations and other churches will view this as a direct assault against marriage and the family.
Stay tuned for a heated campaign that may very well decide the Presidency by driving turnout of Christian RIGHT voters. (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

George w bush watch: slamming obama for appeasement

In a speech to Israel’s Knesset, President Bush said Thursday, ’some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals.’
So, did President Bush specifically SLAM Barack Obama?
You bet he did and the Democrats are screaming BULL, particularly Senator Joe Biden who is being prominently mentioned as Obama’s Vice President choice.
DNC chair Dean calls for McCain to denounce the president’s Jerusalem comments:
Sen. Biden: “This is bullsh*t, this is malarkey.”
Speaker Pelosi: President’s comments “beneath the dignity of the office.”
DCCC head Rep. Emanuel: “Does the president have no shame?”
Appeasement will be the WEDGE ISSUE the GOP will use against Obama in the fall. GOP pushback against the antiwar LEFT of the Democrat Party has just started.
Next, will come the video clips from Hillary Clinton criticizing Obama…….. (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

There was once two lab owners that were friends outside of business. One owner kept his lab clean and tidy, all of the work was done on time and accurately, and he only suffered an occasional complaint from his dentist clients. The other lab owner was quite the opposite. His lab was always a mess, the cases were always running late, and his phone was constantly ringing with an unhappy dentist client on the other end.
Years later, after both had passed away, the messy lab owner found himself in hell, and couldn’t believe how much worse running a lab there was than it had been on earth. He found it impossible to clean his work space, he NEVER got enough time to process the work, and the doctors were both calling him regularly and stopping in to yell at him. One day, he asked if he could have a pass to visit his friend, of whom ended up in heaven. The devil granted a short pass, and the messy lab owner took the elevator ride up.
Once in heaven, he quickly found his friend’s “heavenly” lab. When he stepped inside, he was amazed to see his friend lounging around watching TV.
“I don’t get it!” he exclaimed. “How can it be that your lab is so clean, and ALL of your work is done? Please tell me the secret to how you keep your dentists happy.”
The clean lab owner looked at his friend and replied, “Dentists? There aren’t any dentists in heaven.” (Source: dental blog for dentists about dentistry)

Wine is good for the heart, they say, but two glasses of an alcoholic beverage each day can increase the risk of oral cancer, as well as breast, bowel, and throat cancer, by 75%. In the UK, health experts are working hard to encourage smoking cessation, as well. As of September 30, 2008, gruesome photos of the effects of oral and throat cancer are being posted on every pack of cigarettes. Tobacco and alcohol are primary risk factors for acquiring oral cancer.

How many people actually have oral cancer? You’ll find this startling statement on the Oral Cancer Foundation website:
“More than 34,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 34,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only half will be alive in 5 years. This is a number which has not significantly improved in decades.” It continues to tell us that if we include throat cancer in the numbers, 41000 cases are diagnosed and 12500 die annually in the US alone. Globally, 400,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.”
Dentists offer a frontline of defense for patients. With a manual oral cancer exam during six-month checkups, a dentist can detect oral cancer before it spreads. Recent tools, such as ViziLite and VELscope offer even earlier detection. With these innovative tools, dentists can questionable cells before they surface, which can increase the potential for cure by 80%. Learn more about VELscope and ViziLite at their websites.
Here in the US, Dr. Blaze, the editor of Dental Economics, appealed to his fellow dentists to promote oral cancer awareness. The January 2008 issue of DE included an editor’s note explaining Dr. Blaze’s intention and inviting readers to join him. See the note at the DE website.

Electing Obama or Hillary will mean the State Department will CAVE to the demands of Europe, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and other nations rather than negotiate trade and defense agreements from an American-centric perspective.
Remember when Madeleine Albright, Secretary of State, under President Bill Clinton was clinking glasses with North Korea’s Kim Jong-Il and giving him a signed Michael Jordan basketball while he was breaching a nuclear arms accord which later resulted in a nuclear weapons test during the Bush Administration? What kind of negotiations are these? Peace through weakness?
What would Obama give Iran’s President Ahmadinejad? A clear path to test a medium range missile into Israel or Turkey? How about Greece or Italy?

Dentists save lives

Recently, local and national media seem to cover dentistry more. Maybe it’s the influence of the Extreme Makeover craze; maybe it’s all the new findings that link oral health to overall health. Whatever the cause, awareness seems to be increasing. From the local newspaper to World News and Weekly Report to Reader’s Digest, dentistry is a hot topic.
Here are just a few of the startling facts that you already know:

Oral cancer kills 7500 people annually, and early detection offers an 80% cure rate.
Periodontal disease affects one in two Americans, and it is linked to a long list of oral health problems, including stroke, heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, respiratory problems, diabetes complications, and low birth weight.
People without teeth, which includes three out of every ten Americans over 65, do not live as long as those with healthy, functioning teeth, according to statistics.
Serious dental infections can grow quickly and cause unprecedented damage or death.
With simple tests, dentists can detect a host of diseases in the earliest stages. These include diabetes and many types of cancer.

As a dentist, you play a lifesaving role in your patients’ lives. Learn more in the following articles…

Dpr world 08 show debuts in las vegas

The first ever DPR World 08 show starts Thursday in Las Vegas and runs through Saturday. DPRWorld is the first products based, innovation-driven event produced by Dental Products Report magazine, bringing the pages of DPR alive!
DPRWorld Attendees will receive:

16 Credits of up-to-the-minute, panel-driven, education, customized for DPRWorld. . . You will not experience this education anywhere else!
Featured speakers include Drs. Gordon Christensen, Ronald Goldstein, John West, Louis Rose, Ed McLaren and more. View our continuing education schedule for an overview.
Efficient scheduling and no counter programming let you maximize the value of your time and experience all DPRWorld has to offer. >
See the latest in product innovations and advanced treatment with learning opportunities right on the show floor in our Innovation Center theaters.
Sales, specials, deals and buying opportunities right on the show floor.
Effortless, all inclusive registration and pricing for complete access to DPRWorld.
Exhibit floor party with Taste of Mandalay Bay food event and concert performance by multi-platinum recording artist Chris Isaak.

I had the opportunity to ask show director, Ray Bianchi, a few questions regarding DPR World and this is what he had to say.

Why and how did DPR World come about?
The DTA and some of their leaders asked us to do a survey about dental shows. The DTA chose not to go forward with a show but so many of the big players, Shick, Discus, Schein and Patterson expressed strong interest we decided to go forward with the show. The goal was and is to create a product centered event. This is lacking in Dental we have many, many meetings but no events. The goal of an integrated event is to create a whole experience for the doctor and for the innovative companies that make their lives so much better.
The cost to attend seems a bit steep ($895), why so much?
First off to obtain the same benefits at a major Dental meeting you would have to pay more than 895.00. At our event you get all your meals, 16 credits and CE, a great trade show floor, Chris Isaak, The Dental Plaza, Innovation Centers and more for this price. We want at our show doctors who are serious about education and products and this price point allows us to deliver a great show to them.
Are you looking to replace regional/state trade shows?
Absolutely not. If local dental societies want to have meetings we support that totally. The problem is that those meetings are not about products they are about association business and education that is why they exist. We exist to bring innovative products and our education program is based around great products as well. The result of this is that we hope that our exhibitors and attendees get a good experience. We hope that the dental societies thrive and grow it is good for our business.
What are you hoping to accomplish with DPR World?
To Bring doctors and innovative products together. To attempt to bring a model closer to IDS (Germany’s Show) to the USA where the products are central which will mesh well with our magazine Dental Products Report which is all about products. Also to give each attendee and exhibitor a great experience.
Why should a dentist want to make the trek to Las Vegas to attend?
I think that our offering is the best in the Dental Events market. Look at our speakers and the fact that in 2.5 days you get allot for your money.
It will be interesting to see how this show is received and what the attendance looks like. At one time, I felt that this was an unnecessary show, but maybe, just maybe, this is going to be the stimulus for trade show reform. I am sure that the major dental associations will be watching, maybe they can learn something from it.
Good Luck DPR World!

Even with Hillary’s vicotry last night in West Virginia it is becoming increasingly clear that Barack Obama will be the Democrat nominee for President. With last night’s MS-1 Special Congressional race debacle for the GOP, Obama indeed may be elected the next President.
Are American voters experiencing Bush or is it GOP fatigue? Both have been long on promises and short on delivery.
Or do the Democrats simply WANT it more?
John McCain will have to prove very soon that he is NOT another Bob Dole or it will be a very long summer and fall.

Chase enters dental financing

You have your CareCredit, your CapitalOne HCF, your Wells Fargo, Springstone, and others. Basically, you have options when it comes to patient financing through a third party. Chase has officially thrown its hat in the ring with ChaseHealthAdvance. And if you’re wondering why Unicorn didn’t make the list of financing companies, Chase bought them out. So what’s going to differentiate Chase from the pack? According to the Dental Economics interview (April 2008), Chase has a few advantages to make their product appealing.

They’ll offer no-interest for 3 to 24 months, a popular choice for patients who can pay off their dental expenses inside of two years. ChaseHealthAdvance also claims that they have a great approval rate, which appeals to dentists, and they finance up to $20K. Every approved patient receives a minimum credit line of $5K. Dentists also appreciate the quick funding. Within 24 hours of completing a financed procedure, funds are transferred electronically to the dentist’s bank account.

Dental administrative employees should enjoy the convenience of having a specialized consultant visit the office to train on how to use the provider website, HealthAdvance-Online. A specialized consultant means that if you’re an orthodontist, your ChaseHealthAdvance consultant will be trained specifically in financing for orthodontics. HealthAdvance-Online allows dental practices to electronically submit and track applications, submit fundings, and review reports. In addition, it offers many tools and services to help with marketing ChaseHealthAdvance.

So how do you get started? Simply visit www.chasehealthadvance.com. You won’t incur any enrollment charges or have to meet monthly minimums. There’s nothing to purchase. Within 24 hours of signing up and choosing your plans, a practice consultant can train you, and you can begin using ChaseHealthAdvance. The legislative accomplishments of Hillary and Obama are very slim but if voters want change? But, what does this mean? The legislative agendas of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Howard Dean? Or the mega-unions that control the Democrat Party?
If John McCain was smart, he would focus on the”inexperience factor” and quit trying to appease the “Global Warming Freaks.”

Tarnished image for crest pro-health products

Cincinnati-based Crest, the maker of the popular dental care products, including Crest Whitestrips, Crest Whitening Mouthwash, and the Crest Pro-Health line of products, is getting some flack from consumers. Crest Pro-Health toothpaste is supposed to protect against gingivitis, plaque, tartar, caries, stains, and sensitivity while freshening breath.

Users of Pro-Health toothpaste and mouth rinse have voiced complaints on the Internet (from Associated Content to Amazon and beyond) about dark stains appearing between teeth. One consumer tried to remove the stains with another company’s whitening system, then Crest Renewal Strips, to no avail. Complaints equate the stains to those caused by chewing tobacco or taking methamphetamines, which sounds a bit harsh. The complaints are not accompanied by photos. And wait a minute… Crest Pro-Health product labels state that stannous fluoride in the toothpaste may cause surface stains.
The Crest Pro-Health line of products, which includes mouth rinse, night rinse, and toothpaste, was tested for 10 years and approved by the ADA before hitting the market in 2006. In fact, Crest marketed the first clinically-proven toothpaste in 1955. This company has a history and a good name. The Pro-Health line is intended to be the new generation, the better generation, of oral homecare products. Dr. Robert Fazio, Associate Professor at Yale University Medical Scool and a Crest Pro-Health Advisory Board member says that the Pro-Health technology was tested for years and offers consumers a weapon against oral health problems and diseases.
Crest responded to complaints by placing this information in their FAQs on stains/whitening section:
Q: “As a Dental Hygienist, I have noticed some staining in my patients using Crest Pro-Health Rinse. Is there chlorhexidine in this like there is in Peridex?”
A: Like all mouthwashes that effectively fight plaque and gingivitis, Crest Pro-Health Rinse can contribute to temporary, surface-level brown teeth discoloration, which is reported by a small percentage of individuals.

Teeth discoloration could actually be one indication, in some people, that the product is working: after the rinse kills germs in your mouth, the dead germs can collect on the teeth surface and create the appearance of a brown stain.
Teeth discoloration could be exaggerated by many other factors, such as existing tartar on teeth, consumption of colored beverages like coffee, tea and/or red wine, or tobacco use.
Brown teeth discoloration from use of mouthwashes that effectively fight plaque and gingivitis is not harmful. It is reversible - and largely preventable - through options like brushing with a power toothbrush and tartar-control/whitening toothpaste, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly.

So in this age of cosmetic dentistry and the crazy popularity of teeth whitening, why would a big name like Crest market a product that could stain teeth? No one’s really sure. Some speculate money.

I have a bottle of Crest Pro-Health Night Rinse at home, and it will meet its demise this evening – as will my husband’s, though we have used it for months with no negative side effects. I’m not giving up on Crest, though. I won’t toss my Crest baking soda toothpaste or the kids’ Whitening Expressions flavored toothpaste.

Here is the conclusion...What you are getting at the mall kiosk is home bleaching and you pay them to apply it yourself. MJBY COLIN STEWARTMcClatchy TribuneSANTA ANA, Calif. -- Want to bring home a brighter smile the next time you shop at the mall?Entrepreneurs at many malls are eager to sit you down at their new teeth-whitening booths for 20-minute treatments that typically cost $49 to $99.Their businesses are part of a countrywide expansion of teeth-whitening kiosks, which dentists greet with reactions ranging from skepticism to outrage. Some consumers who have sat at a kiosk for 20 minutes with a plastic tray full of peroxide gel in their mouths say they're happy with the results.Others are unimpressed.Read the entire article on Mall Bleaching by clicking here (Source: Dental Technology Blog)

Thanks to reader Tom, we were able to get a look at the attendance numbers that the California Dental Association published this week. I am calling Bullsh$t! on the CDA and their inflated numbers. Here they are…
Dear Exhibitors:
On behalf of the California Dental Association and the Scientific Sessions Board of Managers, thank you for your participation in our 2008 Spring Scientific Session in Anaheim and your contribution to the success of our show.
Approximately 27,041 dental industry professionals, including 7,348 dentists from California and throughout the nation attended the convention. Following is a complete breakdown of attendance.
DDS 7,348
Guests 2,076
RDA/DA 5,812
Exhibitors 5,355
RDH 2,300
Press 63
Lab Tech/CDT 119
CDA Staff 87
Office Staff 2,129
Misc. 15
Dental Students 560
ADHP Students 1,177
TOTAL 27,041
The dentist to total attendance ratio is 27%.
Next week you will receive a post show survey via e-mail. Kindly take a few moments to complete the survey, as your feedback is very important to CDA. Your concerns and suggestions enable us to enhance our future Scientific Sessions and exhibitor services. CDA is dedicated to being a leader in the dental meeting industry and we believe our exhibitors are our partners in that endeavor. We strive to enhance our meetings for the success of all participants and I hope the 2008 Spring meeting was a positive experience for you and your company.
When is the CDA (and all associations for that matter) going to stop inflating these attendance numbers and start using the magnetic strip technology on the backs of the badges and release “through the gate” numbers? I guess the members of the associations don’t understand that the exhibitors are subsidizing their membership dues. Think what it would cost for membership if the exhibitors weren’t subsidizing their dues…double, triple, quadruple? To the manufacturers and distributors…it is time to take a stand. The DTA also needs to get more involved. Its great that they published a paper on trade shows, but now its time to take action.

However, Flap will be updating Twitter more regularly and you may follow him here.
During this slow period, One Fine Jay will be doing some design and blog platform work so should you find the site unavailable please go to Flap’s back-up blog which is over at Google’s Blogspot.

Periodontal breakthrough

A study by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry found that patients with high levels of the antibody HtpG have better oral health and respond better to periodontal therapy. This contradicts the theory that the body produces antibodies under stress to combat disease. In this case, because the antibodies are present, the patient remains healthier. Patients with periodontal disease had much lower quantities of HtpG. The possibility exists that the antibody could be made into a vaccine to help patients with poor oral health. Scientists hope to find out if the unusual nature of this find is also the case in other systems of the body.

Bad breath bugs identified!

Researchers at The University of Glasgow identified 39 new bacteria that hide on the back of the tongue and cause halitosis. The scientists named the new bacteria on known bacteria with similar attributes, Prevotella melaninogenica and Prevotella pallens. While some mouthwashes kill bacteria, they can only be used for a brief time, so they aren’t effective. Other mouthwashes only mask halitosis. Now that these culprits have been identified, the next hurdle is finding out how to combat them.

Dental anesthesia reversal drug

The FDA approved OraVerse, a dental anesthesia reversal drug created by Novalar in San Diego. OraVerse reduces numbing time by 85 fewer minutes in trials, and about 40% regained sensation in about an hour after receiving the drug. Not only can patients return to work and daily activities with a little more self-confidence, but dentists can perform procedures on both sides of a mouth in one visit. If you’re interested in placing an order, you’ll have to wait until the October ADA Conference in San Diego.

Fewer seeking low-cost care abroad than previously estimated, most seeking higher-quality care, study shows

From the Kaiser Daily Health Policy ReportBetween 60,000 and 85,000 people annually travel abroad for inpatient hospital care, a number "far lower than commonly assumed," according to a study released Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reports. The study -- conducted by consulting firm McKinsey and led by Paul Mango, head of the firm's health care practice -- looked at the behavior of almost 50,000 patients using data from unidentified hospitals around the world, as well as government travel records and interviews with hospital officials and patients. Researchers estimated that the sample accounts for 60% to 80% of the global market and includes such patients as expatriates seeking care in the country where they live, tourists needing unexpected medical care and people traveling for care not available in their home countries.According to the report: * 40% of "medical travelers" identified in the report are people, mostly from developing countries, seeking the highest-quality care, not necessarily the lowest-cost; * 32% were seeking better care than was available in their own country; * 15% sought to avoid wait times for care in their own country, mostly the United Kingdom and Canada; * 9% were residents of the U.S. and other countries seeking medically necessary procedures at lower costs; and * 4% were seeking elective procedures such as plastic surgery.According to the Journal, the report "contrasts sharply" with common assumptions and with figures often used by those who market medical tourism. "There's been an enormous amount of hype" regarding people traveling abroad to receive necessary procedures at a lower cost, Mango said. However, the report does indicate that "there remains potential for huge growth in the industry," the Journal reports. According to the report, about 710,000 procedures, which account for $35 billion in revenue, could be done overseas and save about $15,000 per procedure.Renee-Marie Stephano, chief operating officer of the Medical Tourism Association, said the report's numbers could be slightly flawed because it only looked at a sample of facilities and hospital admissions. She added, "A large portion of the medical tourism industry is based in cosmetic procedures and dental care, which are not performed in hospitals" (Francis, Wall Street Journal, 5/6).The San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday also examined the popularity of medical tourism. The article includes an estimate that 150,000 people sought care abroad in 2006 (Colliver, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/4). (Source: Dental Technology Blog)

As if you haven’t noticed, the FullosseousFlap’s Dental Blog is undergoing some re-design and blog platform maintenance. In the meantime, until everything is back in order, Flap will move his blogging to his back-up blog here.
Flap’s contact e-mail remains: fullosseousflap at gmail dot com.
Today Flap is off to Laughlin, Nevada and then Las Vegas for Mrs. Flap’s birthday celebration. Blogging will be slow since Flap will be at the poker tables or enjoying the warm desert sunshine.
Also, One Fine Jay will be doing a blog redesign and maintenance.
Flap will have photos and the poop about yesterday’s Los Angeles Revlon Run/Walk for Women later in the day. But, the Flickr photostream of the events is here.

A family flees a neighorhood in west Beirut. Hezbollah fighters, their guns blazing, seized control of west Beirut on Friday after three days of deadly street battles with pro-government foes pushed Lebanon dangerously close to all-out civil war.
Iran and Syria have aided Hezbollah RELOAD after the war with Israel in 2006 - so here we go again.

Businesswoman and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, right, campaigns with Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at a town hall style campaign event at Andiamo Celebrity Showroom in Warren, Mich., Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.
Does the GOP REALLY want to lose the race this fall? But, Romney and Huckabee would be worse.

Michael Ramirez on the Obama-Clinton Knockout race

Senator McCain is NOT giving conservatives much solace on domestic policy, now is he?

“John McCain is going to be doing more of these themed tours of America, and one of them is going to be on energy and global climate change. It could get him into trouble with Republicans, of course, and with the base, who don’t think there is much climate change going on, but it is something that he’s very passionate about and he’s going to be talking about it.”

McCain better listen to Newt Gingrich and devise a coherent GOP strategy rather than themed tours that will turn-off most of his GOP base. (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

Maybe Arianna Huffington was just mistaken? Or more interested in selling books?
O’REILLY: Did you vote for President Bush?
MCCAIN: Of course not. I campaigned all over this country for him.
O’REILLY: So you voted for President Bush.
MCCAIN: Of course. I mean, that’s a ridiculous question.
O’REILLY: So she lied?
MCCAIN: Well, I don’t — frankly, I do not read Huffington Post. I spare myself from having that experience.
O’REILLY: You voted for Bush in 2000?
MCCAIN: I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004.
O’REILLY: OK.
MCCAIN: And not only that, far more important than a vote, I campaigned everywhere in America for him.
Well, Arianna, you have been CALLED OUT as a LIAR. Someone else hear McCain say that he did NOT vote for President Bush? And, frankly, how would you know anyway?
Arianna Huffington still the dumbass and now the dumbass liar.

Beware of scam emails!

A patient who has done half of a full-mouth rehab with you walks in one day and says she wants her dental records transferred to another dentist. “Who is it?” you ask, a bit miffed. You’ve never heard of him! You’ve worked so hard to build a great plan for long-term success for this patient. “Can I just ask, why are you leaving us?”
“The other doc is cheaper and says he can do a better job than you. He said your lab isn’t as good as his lab.”
What? This guy knows nothing. And why would this patient take some stranger’s word over yours? You have one more question. “So how did you hear about his practice?”
“He sent me an email,” she says.
So, you think, this patient that you’ve gotten to know, that you’ve worked hard for, a patient you thought valued dental work with integrity…she’s leaving you for a stranger who’s bashed you in email and claims that he can do better work than you. What do you do? Offer a discount? Why? That would only devalue your services. There’s not much you can do. It’s the patient’s call. And what a lucky dentist she’s going to – you’ve done the hard work for him! You compiled the records, created the treatment plan, sold the case, and have completed all preliminary work.
Interesting Emails Deciphered
This happens every day in the Internet world. A dentist gets a long and seemingly well-thought-out email from a stranger saying something like…
Hi Dr. YOUR NAME HERE,
I was looking at websites under the keyword “los angeles cosmetic
>> dentist” >> and came across one of your site’s pages.
>> I see that you’re ranked number 13 and sitting on page 2.
>>>> I’m not sure if you’re aware of why you’re ranked this low, but more >> importantly>> how easily correctable this is. You should first think…is this true? Check it out for yourself. Google “los angeles cosmetic dentist” and see where your site ranks. If you’re on page one, you’re golden.
>>
>> There’s no reason you can’t have a first page ranking for this keyword>> based on your site structure and content. I’m not talking about getting>> your site ranked for one or two keywords, I’m talking about getting your>> site ranked for ALL your keywords. Yes, ranking well is the goal. That’s why you have an SEO strategy. But earning good rankings takes time, effort, and an understanding of your target market.
>>
>> My partners and I own 1000’s websites and offer private linking to
hundreds of website owners just like yourself. This could actually harm your rankings. More on this topic below.

By now you may be wondering why I specifically contacted YOU. I’ve
>> researched>> different local dentist markets and I know that I want to enter them.>> I also know that I can go into just about ANY local dentist market and>> dominate it by getting top rankings and I can prove it to you. He can? Then why hasn’t he? Does he even know the dental field? The dental marketing guidelines established by your state dental board? The ethics considerations?
>>
>> I specifically chose YOU and a handful of your competitors because you’re>> already doing a lot of things right. I’ve already reviewed your site and>> I know you’re not on page 100 or 200 - your on page 2. That’s not bad,>> but I can easily help you get to the top of the rankings.>> And with time and effort, your current company is probably on track to do the same thing.

>> But the truth is I’m only going to work with ONE client in this key word>> set. If I worked with more than one then neither would have a
>> competitive>> advantage over the other and we want our clients to have a competitive>> advantage. For that reason, I only work with one and I take them on a>> first come first serve basis. Is he rushing you? And how does a successful person have the time to do all this research and compose a 7-paragraph email to every potential client? He may have a little too much time on his hands…
>>
>> I have confidence in my capabilities to dramatically improve your site’s>> rankings and profits. Good to know, but self-confidence does not necessarily yield results. I have a very simple way to prove it and the best>> thing about it is there’s absolutely no risk for you to try it. Nothing>> beats seeing the results with your own eyes. No risk except that you lose your relationship with your current web development company. Those folks who held your hand, interviewed you, created your site, and are currently working to improve your rankings. Those folks that did all the hard work in the beginning and continue to work for you every day.
>>
>>
And said dentist thinks Wow. This guy can really help me! I’m going to give him a try. Can’t hurt!
The dentist gets in touch with Email Man and takes him up on his offer, neglecting his current website company and the comprehensive SEO strategy in the works – a strategy that will take 3 to 6 months to show initial results. A strategy that might need tweaking once results show up.
We can Point 1000s of Websites at Your Site!
Another popular email scam is that a company can point thousands of websites at yours. The truth behind this exciting possibility is that you need relevant links from high-quality websites to lead to your site – links from reputable dental-related websites. A slew of links from non-dental or low-ranking websites could actually harm your rankings! In the past, any old linking strategy worked based on sheer numbers, but that tactic is outdated.
Knowledge is Power
First, assess the email message. What, exactly, are the facts he’s presented about your site, and are they accurate. For instance, if you’re a family dentist in Atlanta, and the email says that you don’t show up on Google for the terms “cosmetic dentist Dallas,” you don’t have a problem as long as you show up for “family dentist Atlanta.” Second, are the rankings he quoted legit? Do you really show up in the position he stated? Find out! Just Google the terms he said he typed in, then look at your rank. If the facts seem correct and you’re still concerned, don’t make rash decisions.
Call Your Friends First
Your questions and concerns about your website are legitimate, and they should be addressed. However, the Internet business, just like dentistry, works best when it’s based on relationships. Investing in a relationship with your website development and SEO team will yield you the long-term results you want and deserve. Ask questions, get answers. Don’t be sidetracked by random emails. In the long run, Email Man might destroy your smile. (Source: dental blog for dentists about dentistry)
