These are materials presented at the 2012 STFM Medical Student Education Conference in Long Beach California. Here is the description:The AAMC Compliance Officer's Forum recently published recommendations for medical student documentation in the EMR, which could turn this topic on its ear. This presentation will begin with a description of the new AAMC recommendations, followed by brief descriptions of the policies for medical student documentation at three major medical schools. After which, a discussion with audience members will ensue with a goal of coming to some consensus on what exactly medical students should be documenting in the EMR.
Introduction: The Association of American Medical Colleges has identified key procedural skills that graduating medical students should acquire. Despite this educational goal, there is data to show that students are unprepared to perform even basic medical procedures upon graduation from medical school. Our aim was to characterize the experience and opinions of graduating students in acquiring these skills and elucidate predictors of competence. Methods: 156 graduating medical students were queried via online survey as to their experience, actual level of competence and desired level of competence for nine procedural skills (Foley catheter insertion, nasogastric tube insertion, venipuncture, intravenous catheter insertion, arterial puncture, basic suturing of lacerations, endotracheal intu...

In fact, first-time applicants reached an all-time high in 2011, increasing by 2.6% over 2010 to 32,654 students,
according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Total applicants rose by 2.8% to 43,919. Find out how
far that goes in ameliorating the growing physician shortage.
Conclusions:  The evidence that DO, even by ophthalmologists, is sub‐optimal in detecting common abnormalities challenges existing the notions of training medical students. On pending the results of additional studies of the value of DO in detecting emergencies, we suggest that undergraduate teaching of DO should impart the following: (i) an ability to identify the red fundus reflex and optic disc; (ii) an ability to recognize signs of clinical emergencies in patients, mannequins or fundus photographs; and (iii) knowledge about, but not an ability to detect, other retinopathies.
If future physicians are to best serve the changing health needs of patients and their communities, medical education must put greater emphasis on public health and prevention, experts say in a supplement to October's American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM). The supplement, including more than 30 research papers and commentaries authored by top medical educators and public health professionals, is sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)... Significant gaps between recommended pain curricula and documented educational content were identified. In short, pain education was limited and fragmentary. Innovative and integrated pain education in primary medical education is needed. (Source: The Journal of Pain)

One of the nation's leading voices in patient care and safety says that the key to successfully navigating the challenges and changes that health care reform will bring is the ability to "reimagine and redefine" what nursing is all about.

"The addition of as many as 35 million more people with health insurance will create enormous demands that the current system is simply not prepared to handle," said Courtney Lyder, dean of the UCLA School of Nursing. "Today's shortage of primary care physicians will only be exacerbated unless we look to nurses and nurse practitioners to fill the gaps in providing needed care."

Presently, nurses make up the largest segment of the health care workforce, with more than 3 million nursing professionals in the U.S. and as many as 19 million world...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

Conclusions:
The percentage of full professors in surgery who are women is increasing at a rate disproportionately slower than the increases in female medical students and surgery residents. The rates of increase in female medical students and surgery residents are similar. The disproportionately slow rate of increase in the number of female full professors suggests that multiple factors may be responsible for this discrepancy.
The Surgeon General, the Institute of Medicine, and the Association of American Medical Colleges have called for better education of physicians in terms of caring for patients with disabilities. While such an effort should necessarily be comprehensive and pervasive throughout the curriculum, all medical educators should consider how disability issues can be addressed in their existing coursework. One way that is surprisingly rich and provocative is a single 2-hour session I developed for preclinical students organized around a remarkable DVD: “Outside-In.” (Source: The American Journal of Medicine)

Conclusions:  Compared to internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesiology, and family medicine, EM received the least amount of NIH support per active faculty member and ranked next to last for NIH support by active physician. Given the many benefits of research both for the specialty and for society, EM needs to continue to develop and support an adequate cohort of independent investigators.
CONCLUSIONS While lifestyle factors appear to influence residency program selection, AOA graduates differentially were more likely to
either choose or attain certain competitive, lifestyle-friendly specialties. Health care reform should be targeted to improve
lifestyle and decrease income disparities for specialties needed to meet health manpower needs.

In conclusion, this white paper, which those listed as being in attendance approved, proposes that all ABMS member boards whose diplomates participate in the care of older adults select the floor competencies enumerated by the AAMC that apply to their specialty and add or subtract those completed during their trainees' initial (intern) year and then define those needed in subsequent years of residency and ultimate practice. This would fulfill the requirements of Recommendation 4.2 above. (Source: Journal of the American Geriatrics Society)

Virginia Pressler, Hawaii Pacific Health’s chief strategic officer, had a lot to say Friday in our one-on-one meeting.

The issues that most concern the state’s largest health care provider seem to reflect what the rest of the industry is feeling.

One of the main issues is the doctor shortage, which is a glaring trend across the country as well as here in Hawaii.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the nation will be short 160,000 doctors by 2025.

Shortages will be most acute in primary care and specialties related to elderly care...
In the next few years, the nation's health care system must be prepared for 32 million newly insured patients. To better understand and address this reality, physician workforce analysts and researchers gathered May 5-6 at the AAMC's Seventh Annual Physician Workforce Research Conference in National Harbor, Md. "Given the projected shortages of physicians, we will need multiple strategies for ensuring access to care," said Clese Erikson, M.P.Aff., interim director of the AAMC Center for Workforce Studies, which co-sponsors the event...
CONCLUSION: Transfusion medicine content in American undergraduate medical education is variable and the influence of the TMAA program on contemporary medical school curricula is questionable. Future efforts in this area should focus on standardizing and improving undergraduate medical education in transfusion medicine.

Spurred by calls to reverse an impending shortage of physicians for an aging population, new medical schools are opening at an unprecedented pace. Fifteen new schools are in the process of being accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education; they would join the 134 accredited US medical schools already in existence (9 more than existed in 2002). The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates these expansions will result in an additional 7,000 graduates every year throughout the next decade. Abstract:One hundred years ago, Flexner emphasized the importance of science in medicine and medical education. Over the subsequent years, science education in the premedical and medical curricula has changed little, in spite of the vast changes in the biomedical sciences. The National Research Council, in their report Bio 2010, noted that the premedical curriculum caused many students to lose interest in medicine and in the biological sciences in general. Many medical students and physicians have come to view the premedical curriculum as of limited relevance to medicine and designed more as a screening mechanism for medical school admission. To address this, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute form...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

Conclusions: Although only 19% of the departments analyzed had titles other than Department of Radiology, several trends were noted. With the expanding scope of radiology to include modalities not associated with ionizing radiation, such as ultrasound, MR, and molecular imaging, along with the growing importance of defining radiologists' role in the health care system and increasing patient concerns over the potential dangers of radiation, it remains to be seen whether additional departments elect to modify their names or whether Department of Radiology continues as the most common title.
ConclusionsThe current literature suggests that there are significant disparities in career opportunities, compensation and satisfaction for women compared to men and minority compared to majority faculty in academic medicine [Nivet. J Vasc Surg 2010;51:53S–58S; Peterson et al. J Gen Intern Med 2004;19:259–265; DesRoches et al. Acad Med 2010;85:631–639; Castillo‐Page. AAMC 2008]. Our data, derived from a survey of ASPHO members, suggests that this holds true for PHOs as well. Pediatr Blood Cancer © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. (Source: Pediatric Blood and Cancer)

This article presents how one institution managed three crises in three electives in a single year. The H1N1 flu epidemic impacted a group of students bound for Mexico, a political upheaval affected a student group working in Honduras, and a hurricane threatened a student group in Nicaragua. This article outlines lessons learned from responding to these crises. Well-defined institutional travel policies, clear communication plans in the event of an emergency, a responsible administrative entity for global experiences, and formal predeparture training for students and faculty can help institutions better respond to unpredictable events. A comprehensive examination of these lessons and reflections on how to institutionalize the various components may help other institutions prepare for such ...

As undoubtedly most of our readership knows, significant changes have been made by many medical schools in the United States regarding the relationship between faculty physicians and industry. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) implemented a series of guidelines (http://www.aamc.org/research/coi/compendium2008.pdf) in the wake of serious allegations made against several faculty physicians at some of the nation's most prestigious medical schools. More recently, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) requested public input into the proposed rule for promoting objectivity in research (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-11885.pdf). These changes reflect the increasing complexity of interactions and relationships among academic institutions, the private sec...

If it can be said that one good thing came out of the economic recession that began in 2008 and continues to have repercussions today, it is that the crisis has forced many U.S. medical schools to make hard decisions, cut costs, consolidate, reorganize and, in some instances, change their cultures for a more secure future. That's the key conclusion of a recent study from the Association of American Medical Colleges, or AAMC. (Source: AAFP Resident and Student Focus)

This report describes the process of development of a longitudinal injury prevention curriculum in one medical school. The curriculum committee felt that adding the material in a longitudinal fashion would better correlate the material to the rest of the curriculum as well as provide efficiency in the already crowded undergraduate programme of study. The report describes the content of the longitudinal curriculum developed as well as initial evaluation of the material. (Source: Injury Prevention)

The expectation exists that medical education will continue to improve even during financially challenging times. The authors reviewed their recent experiences in effecting positive changes and improvements in Mayo Medical School during a time of fiscal constraint. They successfully implemented numerous changes, including a major curriculum reform, while modestly reducing overall costs of the medical school and improving student satisfaction and learner outcomes. These improvements resulted from careful alignment among the institutional mission of serving the needs of the patient, communication with the faculty, involvement of the students, and streamlining of multiple processes throughout the school.
Conclusions: Perception of inadequate sexuality training in medical school and personal issues pertaining to sex may be associated with students' difficulty in addressing patients' sexuality. Adequate training is preeminently associated with feeling comfortable addressing patients' sexuality and should be a priority for medical education.

Assessing the Volume-Outcome Hypothesis and Region-Level Quality Improvement Interventions: Pancreas Cancer Surgery in Two Canadian Provinces

Conclusions Regionalization was associated with improved operative mortality in Ontario but not in Quebec, undermining the volume-outcome
hypothesis. The Ontario quality improvement interventions likely were of little influence since patterns in regionalization
and operative mortality were similar before and after year 1999.

The Association of American Medical Colleges has asked academic medical institutions to adopt conflict-of-interest policies for clinical care similar to those they apply to medical research, Modern Healthcare reports. This is the latest in a series of three conflict-of-interest guidances by the association. One example of the policies suggested is that medical schools acknowledge "that capitated reimbursement, fee-for-service and pay-for-performance systems may each exert financial influence over doctors' treatment decisions" (Rhea, 6/30)...
Leaders in biology education are celebrating the progress made since the publication of BIO2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists. The landmark report, published in 2003 by the National Research Council (NRC), called on institutions of higher education to revamp both the curricula and teaching methods in the life sciences to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

BIO2010 urged much deeper connections between the biological sciences and mathematics, the physical sciences, and computer science. In addition, the report called on faculty to move out of the lecture hall and into the field and lab to help develop hands-on learning and higher-order thinking in their students.

Conclusions: Most of the factors the authors assessed in prospective applicants did not predict future problems, with the exception of negative (even mildly so) comments in the dean's letter. The authors suggest that more attention should be paid to the use of the dean's letter to assess risk among applicants, and prospective study of this assessment should be performed.
