            <description>Scotland is an historic centre for public health and epidemiology and a place that exemplifies global problems of health inequality, high incidence of chronic diseases, and the risk factors of smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol excess and obesity. Yet, Scotland is innovative and vigorous in tackling its problems. The World Congress of Epidemiology, established in 1957, returns to Edinburgh, the capital city, after 30 years. Academic departments at the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow and NHS Health Scotland are ready to welcome an expected 1,200 colleagues to a feast of high quality scientific and epidemiological offerings. The Congress will be preceded by the IEA advanced course in epidemiology.             <description>The government's announcement of temporary measures for next year aimed at preserving financial support for medical students is a step in the right direction, but it must become a long term settlement, medical student leaders said today (Tuesday, 28th June 2011).             <description>Abstract: The transfer of nurse training into higher education following ‘Project 2000’ dramatically changed the status of student nurses. While the majority received a grant or bursary, students were no longer regarded as belonging to the hospital staffing complement. , argue that the intended advantage of supernumerary status following the move of nurse education into higher education has not been reflected in the student learning experience. Students have reported difficulties in being accepted into the community of practice, as they are no longer viewed as belonging in the professional sense to the practice environment ().Students must therefore be prepared for their supernumerary role through the development of appropriate skills for learning in practice ().             <description>Close collaboration between the European Association of Young Neurologists and Trainees (EAYNT) and the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) has lead to the introduction of various scientific opportunities for young neurologists at an international level. These include participation in the activities of the Scientist Panels, inclusive of workshop proposals for future congresses, task forces, guideline development and abstract reviewing. Furthermore, the EFNS acknowledges scientific contribution by junior colleagues with congress bursaries and the Uschi Tschabitscher Prize.             <description>The European Association of Young Neurologists and Trainees (EAYNT) is an independent organization representing junior European neurologists. Our major aim is to advocate the interests of young neurologists in major bodies in Europe and worldwide. In addition, we promote European training exchange, and endeavor to improve European national core curricula by studying the differences in medical specialization, the disparities in working conditions, and the level of neurological education throughout Europe. We organize regular meetings at congresses and disseminate information relevant to young neurologists (e.g. bursaries and fellowships). We also promote and co‐organize teaching courses and summer schools. EAYNT offers travel grants for its members.             <description>The University of Manchester has been commissioned&amp;#160;by the NHS Institute to research into the current&amp;#160;and future roles of NHS Networks, NHS Live and CHAIN&amp;#160;in supporting the NHS Institute. The study aims to&amp;#160;research the networks themselves and how they relate&amp;#160;to each other, the NHS Institute&amp;#8217;s past and current involvement with the networks and the&amp;#160;potential development of the networks in supporting&amp;#160;the work of the Institute. As a subscriber to the&amp;#160;NHS Networks email list we are inviting you to&amp;#160;participate in this study.&amp;#160;

The study has already begun collecting data through&amp;#160;interviewing stakeholders within the three networks. <description>To give experience of research to undergraduates with research potential and to encourage them to consider a career in scientific research. These awards provide 6-8 weeks support to enable undergraduates to participate in scientific research in universities and research institutes during the summer vacation.

Support is given at a rate of £175 per week (£185 per week in London), normally for a period of between 6 and 8 weeks. The Foundation does not pay overheads and no longer offers research expenses except in exceptional circumstances. The Bursaries produce no National Insurance contribution liability.

The application, with one copy, must be made by the person who will supervise the research and not the student.

<description>If you're researching social processes, institutions, culture, or identity etc, but you're unsure how to analyse the discourse data from your fieldwork, then consider joining this 5 day ESRC sponsored research training course. The programme is designed to help PhD and post-doctoral researchers navigate the twin perils of over- and under-interpreting discourse data, and it introduces a range of key perspectives and tools used to study language and communication ethnographically. The deadline for application is Friday 16th March 2008. Spaces are strictly limited, so candidates are are advised to apply as quickly as possible. Limited funds are available for bursaries, which will be allocated on the basis of relative need. (Source: MEDEV News)</description>

The selection and nomination of such students is the responsibility of the institution concerned, and their nomination should be based upon a combination of talent and need. All applications must come from the host institution, clearly indicating the envisaged programme of support.

The Third London Open Research Conference on 11 June, organised by SHERPA-LEAP provided a forum for lively debate from several viewpoints.

Non-OA publishers were represented by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP). Institute librarians from across the UK also attended, keen to hear the latest in OA policy and technology.

            <description>Circular SFC/21/2007

Purpose

1 I am writing to you on two distinct aspects of the Council's allocation of student support funds:

to let you know how we will deal with student support funds which were allocated to colleges for use in 2005-06 but have not been spent; and

to inform you of the outcome of the in-year redistribution process for student support funds in 2006-07.
Carry-forward and recovery of unspent 2005-06 student support funds

Background

2 Funds that are allocated for student support purposes in any year, and not used, are subject to recovery by the Council. For convenience these unused funds are recovered by reductions in subsequent payments by the Council. Colleges make their own internal accounting arrangements to deal with these adjustments (see FE/17/05).

            <description>Circular SFC/20/2007

Introduction

1 This letter describes the education maintenance allowance (EMA) programme for 2007-08. In previous years it was annexed to the main grant letter to colleges.

Background

2 The EMA programme is a national (UK) programme which aims to provide a financial incentive to young people from low income households to remain in full-time education beyond the minimum school-leaving age. This programme is available on the same terms to students who remain in school and to those who go to college. 2007-08 will be the first full year that the EMA programme has been fully rolled out across the UK.

3 Within the Scottish college sector, the programme has been managed by the Council (and its predecessor) on behalf of the Scottish Executive since 5 April 2004.
