It is recognised that the type of assessment that students undergo is a powerful influence on how they learn. However, in the concerted effort to ensure that assessments are rigorous, reliable, cheat-proof and able to cope with ever-increasing student numbers it can be difficult to view assessment as an episode of learning. This event aims to promote assessment as an integrated part of learning. The day will cover the key aspects of assessment for learning with a focus on feedback. As usual there will be opportunities for discussion, reflection on practice and to hear 'real-life' practice from fellow bioscientists.
The first meeting on ‘Challenges in Catalysis for Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals’ in 2007 was a great success, attended by over 80 scientists from industry and academia. There was enthusiastic support for a repeat event, and so the RSC Applied Catalysis Group and the SCI Fine Chemicals Group are pleased to announce ‘Challenges in Catalysis II’. Following widespread consultation amongst our members, we have put together an exciting programme and an illustrious panel of invited speakers.
Topics to be covered this time will include the latest developments in coupling redox processes with C-C bond formation, cross coupling reactions, nitrile hydrogenation, organocatalysis, amide bond formation by catalysis and novel techniques for development of catalysed reactions.

The funding may be used to help colleagues attend Higher Education Academy (including Subject Centres) conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run outside of Scotland. We will fund up to 25 bursaries in each of two rounds during academic year 2008-09. The maximum value of each bursary will be...

Fundability status following the ELQ policy: amendments to HEFCE Circular Letter 07/2008

1.	In April we issued Circular Letter 07/2008, 'Changes to fundability status of students for 2008-09 as a result of the ELQ policy' (http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/circlets/2008/cl07_08/). No action is required at this time.

2. In paragraph 12 of both of the annexes ...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

If you're researching social processes, institutions, culture, or identity etc, but you're unsure how to analyse the discourse data from your fieldwork, then consider joining this 5 day ESRC sponsored research training course. The programme is designed to help PhD and post-doctoral researchers navigate the twin perils of over- and under-interpreting discourse data, and it introduces a range of key perspectives and tools used to study language and communication ethnographically. The deadline for application is Friday 16th March 2008. Spaces are strictly limited, so candidates are are advised to apply as quickly as possible. Limited funds are available for bursaries, which will be allocated on the basis of relative need. (Source: MEDEV Events)

(Source: MEDEV News)

Description

Formerly known as Education Grants, awards are made to offer support for education, mainly in the form of bursaries or scholarships and most frequently in the fine and performing arts.

Aim

These awards are made directly to institutions in the performing and fine arts in order that bursaries or scholarships can be provided for the maintenance, training and professional development of eligible students. The selection and nomination of such students is the responsibility of the institution concerned, and their nomination should be based upon a combination of talent and need. All applications must come from the host institution, clearly indicating the envisaged programme of support.

Is Open Access (OA) publishing an unstoppable force? Does it face immovable objects in the shape of publication costs, quality control and copyright? The Third London Open Research Conference on 11 June, organised by SHERPA-LEAP provided a forum for lively debate from several viewpoints.

Around 70 delegates gathered at the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre, off Malet Street. OA proponents included representatives from Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the consultancy Key Perspectives. Non-OA publishers were represented by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP). Institute librarians from across the UK also attended, keen to hear the latest in OA policy and technology.

Circular SFC/21/2007

Purpose

1 I am writing to you on two distinct aspects of the Council's allocation of student support funds:

to let you know how we will deal with student support funds which were allocated to colleges for use in 2005-06 but have not been spent; and

to inform you of the outcome of the in-year redistribution process for student support funds in 2006-07.
Carry-forward and recovery of unspent 2005-06 student support funds

Background

2 Funds that are allocated for student support purposes in any year, and not used, are subject to recovery by the Council. For convenience these unused funds are recovered by reductions in subsequent payments by the Council. Colleges make their own internal accounting arrangements to deal with these adjustments (see FE/17/05).

Circular SFC/20/2007

Introduction

1 This letter describes the education maintenance allowance (EMA) programme for 2007-08. In previous years it was annexed to the main grant letter to colleges.

Background

2 The EMA programme is a national (UK) programme which aims to provide a financial incentive to young people from low income households to remain in full-time education beyond the minimum school-leaving age. This programme is available on the same terms to students who remain in school and to those who go to college. 2007-08 will be the first full year that the EMA programme has been fully rolled out across the UK.

3 Within the Scottish college sector, the programme has been managed by the Council (and its predecessor) on behalf of the Scottish Executive since 5 April 2004. The progr...

Is "qualitative data analysis" too vague for you? Are you wondering how to do justice to your data?

If you're researching social processes, institutions, culture, identity etc, but you're unsure about how to analyse the discourse data from your fieldwork, then consider joining the 5 day ESRC-sponsored research training course:

The programme is designed to help PhD and post-doctoral researchers navigate the twin perils of over- and under-interpreting discourse data, and it introduces a range of key perspectives and tools used to study language and communication ethnographically. Communication in education and in the medical sector is a major concern in this ESRC training programme, and these are important issues both for education and medicine.

I learned in clinic the other day that I can only make fun of medical conditions that close family members have. Therefore, in keeping with decorum, I will restrain from any parkisonian jokes for this product.
