Publication of this information, by the REF team on behalf of the four UK higher education funding bodies, is a key stage in preparations for the REF.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced its funding decisions for higher education in England following the annual grant letter (Note 1) from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and subsequent decisions by the HEFCE Board. HEFCE’s grant will reduce accordingly, but our commitment to supporting high-cost and strategically important subjects, widening participation and smaller specialist institutions will be maintained.

Working with the Medical Royal Colleges, the RCN and others IHM's new Code of Conduct lays out expected behaviours from those managing healthcare services, and GGI commends all boards to ensure that their own managements have signed up to these.
GGI Chief Executive Andrew Corbett-Nolan said 'Good governance isn't only about structures and systems, it is about ethics and behaviours too. This IHM initiative is essential, and we see no good reason why all NHS boards should not ask their senior teams to sign up to this new Code. Indeed, we see this as a critical element to maintaining the NHS reputation during the coming difficult years'.

The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Minister for Universities and Science have today confirmed funding allocations to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for 2012-13 and the Government’s priorities for the Council for the coming year.
The grant letter (note 1) confirms government funding and priorities for HEFCE and for higher education in a year when the new financial arrangements for higher education in England will be implemented. From 2012-13, universities and colleges will increasingly obtain their income for learning and teaching from publicly funded tuition fee loans. HEFCE's funding settlement reflects these new circumstances.
The letter asks HEFCE to ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements in the interests...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

CONCLUSIONS: Community colleges are willing partners for weight loss intervention studies, and overweight/obese employees were receptive to joining a weight loss study offered in the workplace. The results from this study are useful for planning future worksite-based weight loss interventions and research studies that achieve high participation rates at the employee and organizational levels.
The contact hypothesis asserts that intergroup attitudes can be improved when groups have opportunities to interact with each other. Recent research extending the contact hypothesis suggests that contact with a primary outgroup can decrease bias toward outgroups not directly involved in the interaction, which is known as the
secondary transfer effect

The present study contributes to growing research on STEs by investigating effects among Asian, Black, Hispanic, and White undergraduate students (N = 3,098) attending 28 selective colleges and universities. Using hierarchical linear modeling, our results reveal numerous positive STEs among Asian, Black, and Hispanic college students. No significant STEs were observed among White students. named educational supervisors
named clinical supervisors
lead coordinators of undergraduate training

Introduction: The Association of American Medical Colleges has identified key procedural skills that graduating medical students should acquire. Despite this educational goal, there is data to show that students are unprepared to perform even basic medical procedures upon graduation from medical school. Our aim was to characterize the experience and opinions of graduating students in acquiring these skills and elucidate predictors of competence. Methods: 156 graduating medical students were queried via online survey as to their experience, actual level of competence and desired level of competence for nine procedural skills (Foley catheter insertion, nasogastric tube insertion, venipuncture, intravenous catheter insertion, arterial puncture, basic suturing of lacerations, endotracheal intu...

Abstract This observational study describes the development of the college resources and sexual health inventory, the profile of sexual
health promotion resources at participating colleges, and comparisons of resources across several college characteristics.
28 diverse college campuses in one Midwestern state participated. 10 domains were assessed, including characteristics of campus
health services (e.g. convenience), condom programs, sexual health information, communication about resources, sexual violence

The chapter was aimed at climate sceptics, and those who fear it will cost too much to deal with climate change, but it was ditched by the presidential candidate after the book came under attack by rightwing talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
AbstractThe ability of sexual assault nurse examiners to correctly identify and collect DNA evidence improves patient outcomes and prosecution rates. The purpose of this paper is to present findings from a collaborative evidence‐based practice (EBP) project between forensic nurses and baccalaureate nursing students. The goal of the project was to determine best practice using an alternate light source (ALS) to identify trace DNA evidence in sexual assault forensic examinations. Using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence‐based Practice model, the team searched several databases to summarize the limited amount of evidence available regarding this topic. Recommendations from the EBP project include: elimination of the Wood's lamp in sexual assault examinations; use of an ALS that provides a...

In October 2004, the membership of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) adopted the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) Position Statement suggesting that entry level for advanced practice nurses should transition from the master’s degree to that of a doctorate of nursing practice. Specifically, this involved a belief that practice demands and the increasingly complex health care system (even before the Affordable Care Act!) in our country resulted in a need to expand education for those who would be practicing at an advanced level. Additional rationale included such things as the finding that the number of credits within many mas...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

    Abstract
The importance of academic advising has been established in part by its designation as an element in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Standards for Accreditation. In addition, academic advising plays an essential role in students' development, academic success, satisfaction, recruitment, and retention; therefore, access to valid and reliable evaluation tools is of considerable importance. The purpose of this study was to develop and pilot test the Faculty Advisor Evaluation Questionnaire (FAEQ), which is an instrument developed from qualitative nursing research. The psychometric properties were explored using face and content validity, internal consistency reliability, and principle components factor analysis. The four-factor solution o...

Past studies on the effect of an induced abortion on mental health have been mixed in terms of their quality, findings, and interpretation. Some have shown no harm while others have found associations with mental disorders. Last week, the world's largest, most comprehensive systematic review on mental health outcomes of abortion was published by the UK Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AMRC). The review claimed to provide a definitive answer: having an abortion does not increase the risk of mental health problems. (Source: LANCET)

Although research has shown that undergraduate women are at high risk for experiencing sexual assault, little research has been conducted with undergraduate women who are attending a historically Black college or university (HBCU). The purpose of this research is to document the prevalence of different types of sexual assault among undergraduate women at HBCUs and make comparisons to data collected from undergraduate women at non-HBCUs. Data on sexual assault victimization were collected from 3,951 undergraduate women at HBCUs using a cross-sectional, web-based survey. These data are compared to data collected from 5,446 undergraduate women at non-HBCUs using the same research methods. Findings indicate that approximately 9.7% of undergraduate women at HBCUs report experiencing a completed...

Conclusions.VET has potential to meet the increasingly complex needs of AOD work by providing ongoing certificate and diploma level training and qualifications at the vocational graduate level. However, the relatively high levels of dissatisfaction with the VET sector, and concern regarding the ability of certificate IV level training to meet the needs of the AOD workforce, warrant attention. Improved linkages and relationships between the AOD field and the VET sector could increase the quality of training provided and may assist in addressing the AOD workforce development needs.[Pidd K, Roche A, Duraisingam V, Carne A.
Having an induced abortion in itself does not raise a female's chances of developing mental health problems, says a report, claimed to be the largest and most comprehensive ever, published by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AOMRC), UK.
We examined the relationship between active learning and student learning in the subject area of natural selection. We found no association between student learning gains and the use of active-learning instruction. Although active learning has the potential to substantially improve student learning, this research suggests that active learning, as used by typical college biology instructors, is not associated with greater learning gains. We contend that most instructors lack the rich and nuanced understanding of teaching and learning that science education researchers have developed. Therefore, active learning as designed and implemented by typical college biology instructors may superficially resemble active learning used by education researchers, but lacks the constructivist elements nece...

    Abstract
Our study explored the prospects and limitations of using machine-learning software to score introductory biology students' written explanations of evolutionary change. We investigated three research questions: 1) Do scoring models built using student responses at one university function effectively at another university? 2) How many human-scored student responses are needed to build scoring models suitable for cross-institutional application? 3) What factors limit computer-scoring efficacy, and how can these factors be mitigated? To answer these questions, two biology experts scored a corpus of 2556 short-answer explanations (from biology majors and nonmajors) at two universities for the presence or absence of five key co...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

    Abstract
To transform undergraduate biology education, faculty need to provide opportunities for students to engage in the process of science. The rise of research approaches using next-generation (NextGen) sequencing has been impressive, but incorporation of such approaches into the undergraduate curriculum remains a major challenge. In this paper, we report proceedings of a National Science Foundation-funded workshop held July 11-14, 2011, at Juniata College. The purpose of the workshop was to develop a regional research coordination network for undergraduate biology education (RCN/UBE). The network is collaborating wi...

This article describes a 3-pronged compliance strategy to implement a tobacco-free campus policy at 1 large, land grant public university in the South, and evaluates its impact on outcomes and costs. Although there has been a recent wave of tobacco-free colleges, policy restrictiveness and implementation vary, and compliance remains a challenge. The 3 Ts strategy (Tell-Treat-Train) involves regular, consistent communications, access to tobacco treatment medications and counseling, and ongoing training of supervisors and student leaders. Administrative support, access to tobacco treatment, campus buy-in, sustained communications, and careful implementation planning are critical to instituting a tobacco-free university policy.
Physiology faculty members at a wide range of institutions (2-yr colleges to medical schools) were surveyed to determine what core principles of physiology they want their students to understand. From the results of the first survey, 15 core principles were described. In a second survey, respondents were asked to rank order these 15 core principles and, independently, to identify the three most important for their students to understand. The five most important core principles were "cell membrane," "homeostasis," "cell-to-cell communications," "interdependence," and "flow down gradients." We then "unpacked" the flow down gradients core principle into the component ideas of which it is comprised. This unpacking was sent to respondents who were asked to identify the importance of each of the...

The Association of American Medical Colleges has encouraged educators to investigate proper linkage of simulation experiences with medical curricula. The authors aimed to determine if student knowledge and satisfaction differ between participation in web-based and manikin simulations for learning shock physiology and treatment and to determine if a specific training sequencing had a differential effect on learning. All 40 second-year medical students participated in a randomized, counterbalanced study with two interventions: group 1 (n = 20) participated in a web-based simulation followed by a manikin simulation and group 2 (n = 20) participated in reverse order. Knowledge and attitudes were documented. Mixed-model ANOVA indicated a significant main effect of time (F1,38 = 18.6, P < 0.0...

eHealth Literacy Among College Students: A Systematic Review With Implications for eHealth Education

Conclusion: Although college students are highly connected to, and feel comfortable with, using the Internet to find health information, their eHealth literacy skills are generally sub par. College students, especially in the health and medical professions, would be well served to receive more customized college-level instruction that improves general eHealth literacy. Abstract
Multi-user facilities serve as a resource for many universities. In 2010, a survey was conducted investigating possible changes and successful characteristics of multi-user facilities, as well as identifying problems in facilities. Over 300 surveys were e-mailed to persons identified from university websites as being involved with multi-user facilities. Complete responses were received from 36 facilities with an average of 20 years of operation. Facilities were associated with specific departments (22%), colleges (22%), and university research centers (8.3%) or were not affiliated with any department or college within the university (47%). The five most important factors to succeed as a multi-user facility were: 1) maintaining an experienced, professional...

    Abstract
Mixed-model ANOVA indicated a significa...

    Authors: Michael J, McFarland J
    Abstract
Physiology faculty members at a wide range of institutions (2-yr colleges to medical schools) were surveyed to determine what core principles of physiology they want their students to understand. From the results of the first survey, 15 core principles were described. In a second survey, respondents were asked to rank order these 15 core principles and, independently, to identify the three most important for their students to understand. The five most important core principles were "cell membrane," "homeostasis," "cell-to-cell communications," "interdependence," and "flow down gradients." We then "unpacked" the flow do...

AbstractRates of sexual assault of college students are higher than the national rates. Colleges are uniquely positioned to offer preventive education and support services to a high‐risk group. This qualitative study examines students’ perceptions of sexual violence resources and services. Seventy‐eight female and male students, between 18 and 24 years old, belonging to various demographic groups, participated in one‐to‐one walking interviews on five diverse Midwest 2‐ and 4‐year postsecondary campuses. Findings suggest that students are concerned with safety—students want more education regarding sexual violence—and they value services that offer protection from incidents of sexual violence on campus. Participants expressed mixed reactions to prevention education that co...

    Abstract
Animal experiments continue to play an integral role in Indian undergraduate medical education, even though alternatives are becoming increasingly available. In this context, this study aimed to assess the perceptions of pharmacology faculty members from medical colleges in southern India regarding the use of animals and alternatives in experimental pharmacology, and to determine the association between these perceptions and the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants. Data were collected from 59 faculty members of 15 medical colleges in southern India. The response rate was 84.3%. A 30-statement, five-domain questionnaire was used, with a global score of 120. The mean ± SD global score was...

Tracking the UK’s research outputs will become easier in the future thanks to JISC and Research Councils UK (RCUK) working together to utilise their expertise.
Over the coming months a piece of work called the RIO Extension project will take place, to scope the issues and requirements from universities, funders and researchers in managing the information about research outputs. The aim of the work is to provide the UK education and research sector with clear, practical guidance on recording and sharing information about its research outputs, so that it can be reused for a variety of purposes, including by the systems used by the Research Councils.

Although recent guidelines from national colleges and advisory groups have attempted to guide the clinician in thromboprophylaxis in the obese parturient, the lack of adequate prospective series and trials has lead to some contrary recommendations. The arbitrary use of bed rest in the obese patient is a significant risk factor for venous thromboembolism without proven benefit.
Numerous polls show recent college grads have been hit hard by the recession and are facing tough odds in finding well-paying employment. Others show the classes of 2010 and 2011 to be underemployed, with many not finding jobs in their preferred fields or geographic locations. That's the bad news; the good news is that nursing grads might be proving to be the exception to the polls. A recent survey of nursing schools conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) tells a story of success for recent graduates...
A 19-year-old college student was recently arrested for a uniquely modern crime: Using fake IDs, he took the SAT for 6 other students. Had he not been caught, things would have worked out great - his average score was a 2100 out of 2400, enough to get some of these less gifted but enterprising students considered at better colleges.

Conclusions
Most NCAA Division II and III institutions that responded to the survey have implemented AEDs in their athletic programs, although they have a lower prevalence of AEDs than previously reported at Division I universities. Although no benefit was demonstrated in a small number of intercollegiate athletes, AEDs were successfully used in older individuals on campus with cardiac arrest. The American Association of Health Education’s 2009 "Directory of Institutions Offering Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Programs in Health Education" was used to send a three-wave mailing to programs that were not schools of public health (n = 215). A plurality of departments (38%) were currently using more part-time faculty than 10 years ago and 33% perceived that the number of part-time faculty has resulted in decreases in the number of full-time positions. Abstract
Adults with learning disabilities (LD) attending adult basic education, GED programs, or community colleges are among the lowest performers on measures of literacy. For example, on multiple measures of reading comprehension, adults with LD had a mean reading score at the third grade level, whereas adults without LD read at the fifth grade level. In addition, large numbers of adults perform at the lowest skill levels on quantitative tasks. Clearly, significant instructional challenges exist for adults who struggle with literacy issues, and those challenges can be greater for adults with LD. In this article, the literature on adults with LD is reviewed, and evidenced-based instructional practices that significantly narrow the literacy achievement gap for thi...

Higher education in England is changing and HEFCE has published a business plan that describes how it will meet the challenges and opportunities of this transition.
The plan covers the period up to 2015, during which time the Government’s reforms to higher education funding and regulation will take effect.
It describes three key principles – opportunity, choice and excellence – that will inform our work to support our priorities: the core academic activities of learning and teaching, research and knowledge exchange.
It also details how HEFCE will deliver these objectives – its practices. This will include: an emphasis on high-quality information; a proportionate approach to regulation; investment for public benefit; and a commitment to working in partnership with Go...

Conclusions: There is need for education regarding hazards associated with improper waste disposal at all levels of dental personnel. It is imperative that waste should be segregated and disposed off in a safe manner to protect the environment as well as human health.
Ramesh Chowdhary, Nagalakshmi ChowdharyIndian Journal of Dental Research 2011 22(3):436-439Edentulism is the major problem in the developing countries, and is widely spread in the current population, although the prevalence is declining and incidence of tooth loss is decreasing in the developed nations. The prevalence of edentulism in India varies from 60% to 69% of 25 years and above age group. It is obvious that the number of lost teeth increases with age leading to an increase in prevalence of partially edentulous patients.
Conclusions:  The evidence that DO, even by ophthalmologists, is sub‐optimal in detecting common abnormalities challenges existing the notions of training medical students. On pending the results of additional studies of the value of DO in detecting emergencies, we suggest that undergraduate teaching of DO should impart the following: (i) an ability to identify the red fundus reflex and optic disc; (ii) an ability to recognize signs of clinical emergencies in patients, mannequins or fundus photographs; and (iii) knowledge about, but not an ability to detect, other retinopathies. Curriculum revisions need to take place based on profound changes in science, a more complex health care system, technology, and more current models of curriculum design. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing's The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice is an organizational framework that can easily be used during a nursing program's curriculum revision process. The redesign of nursing curricula is urgent and needs to reflect the integration of clinical and classroom learning consistent with the language found in the Baccalaureate Essentials, standards of the institutions' accrediting bodies, and the state boards of nursing.
This study was carried out to explore the level of engagement of north Indian students in health promoting behaviours; to determine their sense of coherence scores; and to ascertain the determinants of health promoting behaviours of these students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done in four randomly selected colleges of Chandigarh during 2007-2008 in 200 students (100 male, 100 female). Their health promoting lifestyle profile (HPLP) and sense of coherence (SOC) scores were estimated using interviews. The data were analyzed using Pearson's product moment correlation, and also stepwise linear regression analysis. Results: Mean HPLP and SOC scores of the students were 138.69 and 130.87, respectively. Females cared more about their health than males. Male students were more involved in...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

    Abstract
This descriptive study explores students' perceptions of personal and program preparedness for disasters. Participants in this online survey included 1,348 nursing students from every state plus Guam, Puerto Rico, and theVirgin Islands. The study explored three questions: a) the level of preparedness, including learning about different types of disasters, preparing disaster plans, creating disaster kits, and participating in community disaster response efforts; b) the impact of disasters on nursing students; and c) strategies to assist nursing students during disasters. Results indicated that nursing students throughout the country are generally not well prepared for disasters. Nurse educators need to...

Universities UK responded today to the admissions process review consultation published by UCAS.
The review proposes a shift to a post-results admissions system, and also consults on a range of shorter term improvements to the current model.
Professor Eric Thomas, President of Universities UK and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol, said: “We are supportive of a review of the admissions system. There may well be a case for making the applications system more efficient and user-friendly for applicants, and it is something that universities will want to look at very closely.
“In terms of the proposal to move to a post-results admissions system, there will need to be full consultation on this with all parties, including universities, schools, colleges and applicants. Univ...

Despite intense lobbying during its passage through the UK's House of Commons, the Health and Social Care Bill now passes to the House of Lords and will enter into the Committee Stage on Oct 11. We are extremely concerned that, should this legislation be passed, we will be taking yet another step down the road towards a fully private insurance system. The National Health Service (NHS) will be fragmented and its assets will be stripped by private providers looking to run services with profits at the heart of business, not patients.
