The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation on Friday said it has reversed its decision about funding grants for Planned Parenthood.

The organization, which has Cincinnati affiliate, said earlier this week that it would not fund grant applications to groups under federal investigation, which includes Planned Parenthood.

Culture Map reports that after the initial Komen announcement, Planned Parenthood received more than $400,000 in donations in 24 hours.

A Friday statement from Nancy Brinker, the founder of the foundation, apologized for upsetting its supporters and partners with the funding removal, and said the foundation will “ensure that politics has no place in our grant process...
Conclusions
Kidney function did not differ between caregivers and controls over time. However, GFR had impaired at 3 months after a major caregiving transition. Because the effect of placement of the spouse with Alzheimer’s disease on the decline in GFR was moderated by BP, it might be confined to caregivers who experience increased sympathetic activation after placement.
Breast cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, says that dropping Planned Parenthood from its granting process is not political, and says it is "dismayed and extremely disappointed" that its action has been mischaracterized. The charity says it has taken actions to make its granting process stronger and more effective, resulting in Planned Parenthood being dropped from its list of grantees. In a written communiqué today, Komen says it embarked on a new initiative in 2010 to assess the impact of its community grants... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced its funding decisions for higher education in England following the annual grant letter (Note 1) from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and subsequent decisions by the HEFCE Board. This announcement covers HEFCE funding for the academic year 2012-13 (Note 2).
The overall level of government support for teaching in universities and colleges is set to increase over the next few years as a result of higher tuition fee loans under the Government’s new finance arrangements for higher education. HEFCE’s grant will reduce accordingly, but our commitment to supporting high-cost and strategically important subjects, widening participation and smaller specialist institutions will be maintained.

Comparison of Inside-Out and All-Inside Techniques for the Repair of Isolated Meniscal Tears: A Systematic Review

Conclusion: There are no differences in clinical failure rate or subjective outcome between inside-out and all-inside meniscus repair techniques. Complications are associated with both techniques. More nerve symptoms are associated with the inside-out repair and more implant-related complications are associated with the all-inside technique.
Clinical Relevance: Rates of structural healing and complications are comparable for inside-out and all-inside repair techniques for isolated meniscal injury. Differences in observed healing rates after meniscal repair may be more dependent on tear pattern and associated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction rather than an inside-out versus all-inside surgical approach.
Conclusion
This study of 15 people undergoing brain surgery has demonstrated a method of reconstructing the sound of a heard word using only the signals obtained from the brain. This study represents an important progression in the field of speech reconstruction, which has the potential to improve the lives of many who suffer from speech difficulties in the future.
But the words, when reconstructed, were not of good enough quality to be recognised by a human listener when played. The words could only be identified when the original and reconstructed sound patterns were compared visually. The researchers suggest that improving the brain sensors detecting the STG brain activity may, in the future, improve the reconstructed sound to a level that could be understood by a person listening.

Conclusions
The association between childhood maltreatment and common psychiatric disorders operates through latent liabilities to experience internalising and externalising psychopathology, indicating that the prevention of maltreatment may have a wide range of benefits in reducing the prevalence of many common mental disorders. Different forms of abuse have gender-specific consequences for the expression of internalising and externalising psychopathology, suggesting gender-specific aetiological pathways between maltreatment and psychopathology.
Conclusions.
-Secretase, and in particular PS1 alone, are potent regulators of angiogenesis and this is due in part to stabilizing endogenous superoxide generation and reducing proinflammatory cytokine expression during CNV.
AbstractResponse to Intervention (RtI) has brought about many changes in the way educational services are being provided to students who are at risk of school failure. Schools are seeking strategies that will be beneficial to more and more students, including those students whose instruction is primarily in the core, or Tier 1. Nesting proven, evidence‐based practices more widely in an RtI model is discussed as an efficient strategy for closing achievement gaps and research‐‐practice gaps. To differentiate instruction relative to RtI and the core curriculum, the application of strategies typically reserved for Tiers 2 and 3 is suggested. An example of embedding, or nesting, interventions at Tier 1 is given. Organizational tools are provided for Tier 1 whole‐class, differentiated in...

    Abstract
The perception of being a burden to others has been associated with suicidal ideation and behavior. Maladaptive aspects of perfectionism have also been associated with suicidal thinking and behavior. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether perceived burdensomeness would act as a mediator between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal ideation. Results indicated that perceived burdensomeness mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal ideation, which suggest that the perception of burdensomeness may be one aspect of the mechanism by which perfectionism can lead to such psychological distress that it becomes a predictor of suicidal ideation. Clinical implicatio...

Donors Replace SGK Funds in 24 Hours

Komen for the Cure, a well-established breast cancer charity, has stopped funding clinical breast exams and mammograms at Planned Parenthood affiliates and clinics. Komen's spokeswoman Leslie Aun told the media that their foundation has recently adopted a rule that prohibits the giving of grants to organizations that are under government investigation. Planned Parenthood is currently under a congressional investigation by the House Oversight and Investigations subcommittee, led by Rep. Cliff Stearns of Florida. In 2011, Komen granted $680,000 to Planned Parenthood for breast health exams....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Breast Cancer)

They understood. They felt the appalling deprivation of it all. A 500-year-old cross-trainer just isn't any good to anybody. But I wasn't going to underestimate my table-neighbour just yet. I couldn't give up on him like that.
Genetic testing may help sarcoma patients and their famlies know their risk of other cancers later in life

If your child is diagnosed with a sarcoma—a tumor in connective tissue like muscles or bones—it’s natural to become totally focused on his immediate recovery. But what if beating sarcoma wasn’t the only time your child might face cancer?
Data shows that there is a link between sarcomas and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare condition that raises a person’s risk of developing one or more cancers to as high as 85 percent. Cancers typically diagnosed in patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome include breast cancer, sarcomas, brain tumors, acute leukemia and adrenal cortical carcinoma. Recently, the list has been expanded to include colon cancer and stomach cancer.

Conclusion/interpretation Insulin resistance and IGT, representing two stages in the path towards diabetes, are associated with differential reductions
in the incretin effect seen before the development of IGT and overt type 2 diabetes. The reduction is unrelated to secretion
of incretin hormones, but is related to insulin resistance and subtle beta cell defects, and is further aggravated on development
of IGT.

Abstract Fatal rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) remains a feared complication. Development of vascular surgery techniques
over 50 years ago has fulfilled the promise of preventing rupture, but the significant morbidity associated with open repair
causes physicians and their older patients pause. With the advent of less invasive endovascular techniques and devices, patients
now have another viable treatment option. We review some of the important trials as well as discuss developments in the continually
evolving field of endovascular repair of AAAs.

As far as I know there is no such thing as an Integrated Reading Environment (IRE). But there should be. Lets see what it would do:Webpage, app or widget, you would drop a well formed bibliographic reference, DOI or URL into the IRE, which would fetch the full text and load it for reading. You'd be able to see comments from other readersYou'd be able to call up the papers in the reference section in a popup windowYou'd be able to add comments and lengthier responses, which would be relayed directly to the authorsYou'd be able to check data, obtain datasets, re-analyseYou'd be able to read protocols, grant applications and other related documentsYou'd be able to find similar papersI'd happily pay £10-£15 per week for a service like this.
Has Diversity Increased in Orthopaedic Residency Programs since 1995?

CONCLUSIONS: Despite the increase in diversity in the orthopaedic workforce during the past 15 years, ethnic and gender disparities persist among orthopaedic residency programs regarding residents, clinical faculty, and basic research faculty. To increase diversity in orthopaedic residency programs, an emphasis on recruiting ethnic and gender minority candidates needs to become a priority in the orthopaedic academic community.

The conditions are recessive; which means you need both parents to carry the defective gene for the conditions to appear. They are therefore most common in families where first cousins marry.Rainger, who works at the Medical Research Council's human genetics unit ...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center gave a $5 million grant to the Museum of Science Boston on Wednesday to build an exhibit on biology and biotechnology to be called the Hall of Human Life (HHL).

The exhibit, expected to open next summer, will include 10,000 square feet of space relying on life sciences research connections through businesses and universities in the area. The HHL itself is planned to include an interactive segment in which visitors can anonymously record their experiences in areas of food, physical forces, living organisms, social experience and time...
HAMM, Germany, Jan. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ortho Caps GmbH today filed a notice of opposition to Align Technology's (Nasdaq:ALGN) patent EP 2 263 599. With this filing, Ortho Caps has started the opposition procedure against the above patent in the European Patent Office (EPO). If successful, it could lead to the revocation of Align's patent in the designated member states of the European Patent Organisation.

"This patent describes a CAD/CAM process of fabricating dental models on which aligners are thermoformed. As an orthodontist, I can assure you that Align has essentially taken a previously known orthodontic laboratory procedure, together with a CAD/CAM technique that was already being used in dentistry, to fabricate orthodontic appliances (aligners), which have been used in ...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

Publishers have made more scientific research available to more readers at a lower unit cost than ever beforeWriting in these pages last week, Dr Mike Taylor used strong language to support his assertion that academic publishers have "drifted out of alignment" with science – language that demands a response.I won't comment on the multiple references to one significant publisher – which is just one of 2,000 active scholarly publishers, most of them learned societies – but it is unfair and wrong to characterise a progressive industry in these terms. These publishers are not anti-science, anti-publication, pouring scorn on new entrants to the industry, exploiting people with preventable diseases (are you serious?) or doing almost nothing to earn their "obscene profits".They are offended...

This article aims to provide a step-by-step overview of the process of applying for research funding and will be most relevant to either a new academic joining a group or a young clinician wanting to establish their own research. We explain the types of funding available and the process by which one would choose the right funding body to apply to. We highlight the various people who should be involved in developing the research proposal and making a funding application, as well as the sources of support available to help the new researcher take their ideas forward. A checklist is also provided to reiterate the key points. (Source: Paediatrics and Child Health)

From April 2013 (subject to the health and social care bill), local authorities will commission substance misuse recovery services using their public health grant according to priorities agreed by their Health and Wellbeing Board. In preparation, the National Treatment Agency (NTA) "Why Invest?" support material argues for continued investment in effective drug treatment and recovery services. NHS and local authority chief executives will wish to review and discuss the material with colleagues when considering local implementation. (Source: NeLM - Mental Health)

This report describes a grant proposal–writing seminar series provided to University faculty (N = 20) and explores factors facilitating and impeding writing. Summary statistics are provided for quantitative data. Free responses were sorted by independent raters into meaningful categories. As a consequence of the training, 45% planned to submit within 18 months; 80% of grant proposals targeted NIH. At 1-year follow-up, 40% actually submitted grants. Factors impeding grant proposal writing included competing professional demands; factors facilitating writing included regularly scheduled feedback on written proposal sections and access to expert collaborators. Obtaining grants generates financial resources, facilitates training experiences, and vastly contributes to the growth and disse...

Why are cavefish a good example of evo-devo?

The blind Mexican cavefish is one of the few species that has an ancestor on the surface and a descendent in caves.

Jeffery: Scientists study all kinds of organisms in evolutionary developmental biology, but when I started working in the evo-devo field, I decided that in order to understand how development evolved, we would have to look at two closely related species that have diverged recently [developed in separate directions] or to look at the same species in the process of divergence. I looked around for models, and I found several of them. One of them happened to be in caves, and the species is called Astyanax mexicanus, the blind Mexican cavefish. This cave organism is one of the few in which the acknowledged ancestor is still present on...

Saint Luke’s Hospice has raised $1.5 million, a goal that comes with the promise of an extra $500,000 grant and clears the way for construction of a new facility.

The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation Inc. issued a challenge grant in January 2011 that gave the hospice a year to meet the fundraising goal. The hospice expects to get the $500,000 in the spring.

The money is for a $7 million free-standing hospice facility. Half of that money has come from philanthropic donors.

The completion of the campaign means construction can start, campaign co-chair Larry McMullen said in a release... (Source: bizjournals.com Health Care:Physician Practices headlines)

The grant letter (note 1) confirms government funding and priorities for HEFCE and for higher education in a year when the new financial arrangements for higher education in England will be implemented. From 2012-13, universities and colleges will increasingly obtain their income for learning and teaching from publicly funded tuition fee loans.
Quality of life in younger patients treated for breast cancer is seriously compromised, and these women face more physical and mental health issues than women their age who haven't had cancer and women over 50 who have, according to a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study, published Jan. 20 in the peer-reviewed Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that younger breast cancer survivors suffer from a slew of problems, including severe psychological distress, infertility, premature menopause, a decrease in physical activity and weight gain.

The HealthQuest Northeast Connecticut coalition was one of 15 groups nationwide selected to mentor another community as part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program. HealthQuest is a grant-funded community collaboration project that is part of the Centers’ Action Communities for Health, Innovation and Environmental Change, or ACHIEVE. The HealthQuest project started informally in 2007 and formally in 2009 after receiving a three-year grant from the centers. The project seeks to improve community health, especially by lowering obesity rates, through policy change, according to its mission. The genetic heterogeneity seen in the cell lines was reflected in human tumors included as part of The Cancer Genome Atlas. These data suggest that AKT inhibition may be effe...

Conclusions: This study identified cognitive deficits in cannabis users even in the absence of axis-I disorders and a history of using other illicit drugs. Future work should use longitudinal designs to track whether these deficits predate cannabis use or are due to its consumption. (Source: Drug and Alcohol Dependence)
