Year after year, medical students pose questions that reflect the same concerns and misconceptions about a career in radiology. While radiology educators and practicing radiologists may perceive many of these reservations as ill-founded or misguided, they are nonetheless important to recognize and address. Student decisions about careers are determined not only by what students know, but also by what they think they know. If students opt for radiology or eschew it based on inaccurate information, this benefits neither the students nor the field of radiology. In what follows, we briefly identify and suggest strategies for educating students about a dozen concerns and misconceptions.
Conclusions:
The study showed high EC awareness and usage in contrast to other studies in the city, which could be due to the fact that university students are relatively in a better educational level. Therefore, it is highly recommended that interventions intended to combat maternal mortality through contraceptive usage need to be aware of such information specific to the target groups.
This study was designed to test how talking on the phone, texting, and listening to music may influence pedestrian safety. 138 college students crossed an interactive, semi-immersive virtual pedestrian street. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups: crossing while talking on the phone, crossing while texting, crossing while listening to a personal music device, or crossing while undistracted. Participants distracted by music or texting were more likely to be hit by a vehicle in the virtual pedestrian environment than were undistracted participants. Participants in all three distracted groups were more likely to look away from the street environment (and look toward other places, such as their telephone or music device) than were undistracted participants. Findings were maintaine...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

This study examined the influence of psychosocial factors upon individuals' intentions to drink walk across four experimental scenarios (and a control condition). Specifically, a 2×2 repeated measures design was utilised in which all of the scenarios incorporated a risky pedestrian crossing situation (i.e., a pedestrian crossing against a red man signal) but differed according to the level of group identity (i.e., low/strangers and high/friends) and conformity (low and high). Individuals were assessed for their intentions to drink walk within each of these different scenarios. Undergraduate students (N=151), aged 17-30 years, completed a questionnaire. Overall, most of the study's hypotheses were supported with individuals reporting the highest intentions to drink walk when in the presenc...

An investigation by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery reveals that individuals who undergo anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction are approximately 4 to 5 times more likely to undergo further ACL reconstruction, if the initial operation was performed by a surgeon who has carried out less than 60 operations. Furthermore, the researchers found that taking part in subspecialty orthopedic fellowship-training program did not enhance the learning curve of young surgeons carrying out ACL reconstructions... Abstract
Relatively little is known about the efficacy of clinically inexperienced student therapists carrying out cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) under supervision during a professional, psychologist training program. The current study evaluated this by collecting pre- and posttreatment data on 591 consecutive patients receiving treatment at the Psychotherapy Clinic of the Department of Psychology, Stockholm University, Sweden, over an 8-year period. The patients had mainly anxiety disorders or depression with a mean duration of 15years, and received individual CBT for a mean of 18 sessions. They improved significantly on both general measures (Beck Anxiety Inventory [BAI], Beck Depression Inventory [BDI], and Quality of Life Inventory [QOLI...

    Abstract
Scrupulosity is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) characterized by a tendency to have persistent doubts about God, sin, and the adequacy of one's religious behaviors and devotion. To date, no published studies have compared scrupulosity in high- and low-religious Muslim and Christian samples. In the present study religious school students as well as high- and low-religious university students in Turkey and Canada were compared on the Penn Inventory of Scrupulosity (PIOS), Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44), and symptom measures of obssesionality and negative affect. Between-group comparisons revealed that the highly religious Turkish sample scored significantly higher than the highly religious Canadian students on th...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

These findings, along with concerns about possible adverse ecological effects associated with other broad-spectrum β-lactams, do not support the use of cefpodoxime as a first-line fluoroquinolone-sparing antimicrobial for acute uncomplicated cystitis.

This powerpoint presentation addresses whether there is an association between presence of a student-run clinic at a medical school and future practice of medical school graduates in a primary care specialty. A 2005 survey of all student-run clinics associated with medical schools was supplemented by direct survey of schools missing from this dataset. We used multiple linear regression to test associations controlling for medical school confounders. In 2005, 72 of 115 responding medical schools had student-run clinics. No association was found between having a student-run clinic at a medical school and proportion of its graduates who currently practice primary care. We will discuss implications and future directions for student-run clinic research.

This seminar will include information about health literacy in general, including definitions, prevalence, and important health-related associations, in order to provide a common starting point for participants. We will discuss evidence-based best-practices for mitigating the effects of low health literacy. We will then discuss competency-based training outcomes, and associated methods for teaching and evaluating learners. We will discuss various curricular models, and examine the example of one medical school's health literacy curriculum in more detail.
The Weill Cornell Community Clinic (WCCC) is a student-run clinic serving the uninsured population of NYC. The WCCC has two main goals: extending healthcare access to underprivileged populations, and increasing patients' knowledge regarding their health conditions, related care, and treatment. In order to assess clinic patients' educational needs and interests, a survey was administered to all patient visits over a four-week period that requested participants to rank numerous services (e.g. smoking cessation, exercise, nutrition) with respect to interest level. Nutrition counseling was unanimously rated as being of high interest.
To acknowledge and act on the recognized need voiced by WCCC patients, two methods of Nutrition Counseling have been proposed. In one solution, weekly sessions wo...

    Abstract
The educational intervention could improve knowledge about rational drug use in the junior high school. Improving knowledge about rational drug use at an early age may be a good way to increase the population's awareness of health, medicines and self-medication. To educate the rational drug use, it is desirable that the school pharmacists participate in this educational program in the junior high school. So we conducted an educational lecture by school pharmacists to promote rational drug use and self-medication in junior high school students. The study compared participant responses before and after a lecture. After the first questionnaire, we lectured the mentioned above to them. Afterward, secon...

Sometimes, though, we, too, need access to resources to help care for ourselves during defining moments that can forever change our lives.
The death of a loved one or important person in our lives, through suicide or other traumatic event can be one of the most difficult and stressful experiences we ever face. With that loss comes a strong feeling of helplessness, loneliness and lack of hope.
Having access to the right tools to cope with our grief and loss is essential to the healing process. Recognizing this, Jefferson has recently formed JeffHELP, a campus-wide suicide prevention team. The group is currently in the process of determining ways in...

GADARIF, Sudan — When Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman began offering a course in community development in the 1990s meant for mature, illiterate women farmers, the main goal was to expand the students’ role in the economic life of their communities. But over the years, many such courses have expanded to touch on more intimate subjects, including reproductive health, early marriage and even female genital mutilation/cutting, a longstanding tradition in the area. (Source: UNFPA News)

Conclusions:
Use of TV/DVD and computer/electronic games increased with age and tracked over time in this group of 11-13 year old Norwegian children. Interventions targeting these sedentary behaviours should thus be introduced early. The identified modifiable and non-modifiable factors associated with change in TST and tracking of high TST should be taken into consideration when planning such interventions.
ConclusionsThe results support the hypothesis that tailoring prevention efforts to address specific predisposing factors, such as a low LR, may be associated with beneficial effects on drinking quantity. We hope that these data will encourage additional efforts to validate the low LR‐based prevention paradigm and test other interventions that are targeted toward predisposing phenotypes such as impulsivity and negative affect.
The Weill Cornell Community Clinic (WCCC) started a facilitated insurance enrollment program in 2009(?). The aim of the program is to educate patients about available free or low cost insurance options and to serve as mentors while guiding patients through the enrollment process. A group of trained medical students screens all new and follow-up patients that attend the clinic. Screening questions include employment status, monthly income, and household composition. If patients are eligible, the WCCC collaborates with health care advocates at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House to enroll patients in public health insurance options.

Over the past two years, this program has screened 125 patients. In the past 6 months, 47 patients were screened for public health insurance. Eleven (23.4%) pati...

A goal of the Weill Cornell Community Clinic is to provide comprehensive health care to our patients that extends beyond primary care to include such services as mental health, women's health, pharmacy, and referrals. Key to the successful maintenance and expansion of our service offerings is the organizational structure of the Clinic, led by the Student Advisory Committee. As part of the Committee, medical students learn firsthand the challenges of managing a clinic and running a non-profit organization, along with the difficulties that underserved patients face in attaining high quality health care. Thus the Student Advisory Committee provides a unique addition to medical school education while also improving the services the Weill Cornell Community Clinic can offer our patients.
This article provides an overview of the findings from each of the 3 years of an intensive, tiered reading intervention with middle‐school students. In Year 1, students were provided with a Tier 1 and Tier 2 intervention. In Year 2, minimal responders were provided with another year of intervention (Tier 3), and again in Year 3, minimal responders to the 2‐year intervention were provided with a third year of intervention (Tier 4). Using students' responsiveness to intervention as a prerequisite for a subsequent year of intensive instruction, minimal responders received a total of up to 3 years of intervention. The efficacy of an enhanced primary (Tier 1), secondary (Tier 2), and tertiary (Tier 3) intervention, and an individualized, intensive reading intervention (Tier 4) are discussed...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

This article provides a simple model for evaluating the current instruction to look for areas in which it can be adjusted before more restrictive measures are taken. The model draws from the literature on functional assessment of academic performance. Teachers and consultants are advised to check (a) the skills targeted for instruction, (b) guided practice, (c) independent practice, (d) implementation fidelity, and (e) the motivating conditions that are present during instruction. The role of each area in student learning and progress is discussed, and recommendations are made for adjustments. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (Source: Psychology in the Schools)

This article explores some of the key elements of RtI practices in mathematics, including screening for identification of struggling learners and progress monitoring for gauging instructional effectiveness. In addition, several of the pressing needs regarding the importance of mathematics proficiency for all students are discussed. We describe some of the similarities and differences between RtI processes in reading and mathematics. The article addresses the use of diagnostic data and details the importance of “core” instructional practices that reflect the standards included in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and Common Core Mathematics standards, among others. The article concludes with a discussion of some evidence‐based interventions in mathematics, and ...

AbstractAlthough Response to Intervention (RtI) implementation efforts have been occurring in schools across the country for more than a decade, questions and concerns are emerging, as some schools are not observing significantly improved student achievement or behavior outcomes as expected. In the literature on RtI implementation, most authors indicate there are multiple levels of support that are required for effective RtI implementation. These include individual professional development regarding the rationale for RtI and for developing necessary skills; building‐level support encompassing necessary resources, leadership, and structures that promote RtI; and district‐level support to drive the broader system. In this article, we identify district‐level supports that are important ...

Discussion
Nutritional problems can occur in all parts of the world and in all socioeconomic strata. Caloric and/or protein inadequacy unfortunately plagues too many people because of inadequate supplies or availability. Supplemental food programs around the world attempt to provide appropriate nutrition, but can be stymied because of war, political instability, economic instability and many other social factors.
The most common specific nutrient deficiencies are iron and Vitamin D deficiencies. Minerals important for essential nutrition include copper, iodine, selenium and zinc. A typical mixed diet usually provides enough minerals.
Conclusions: It could be stated that extreme handedness has an influence on the asymmetry of epicondyle of the humerus; nevertheless, this effect is more significant in the extreme right handed. This is likely to result from the necessity for left‐handed people to adapt themselves to the conditions of a dominantly “right‐handed” world. Am. J. Hum. Biol. 2012. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Many medical students struggle as they enter the clinical setting because they have difficulty in integrating and applying what they have learned in the preclinical classroom. In order to address this challenge, active learning activities were added to the Essentials of Patient Care course for second year medical students. This PowerPoint was presented at the 38th Annual STFM Conference on Medical Student Education and presents 1) the structure of the course that encompasses cultural competency, health policy, preventive medicine, epidemiology/evidence-based medicine, and medical ethics; 2) examples of the active learning activities; 3) the formative assessment of students' performance in these activities qualitatively and quantitatively; and 4) the use of these assessment data to improve ...

The menu items available to El Monte City School District students on a recent Wednesday were a far cry from the staples that for years dominated school lunches - offerings like sloppy joes and tater-tots. The change is the product of a more-than-decade-long effort to bring healthier options to the children of the K-8 school district. Combined with a hefty nutritional curriculum that has pervaded regular classroom lessons, the district has landed several prestigious awards and brought it closer to creating a healthier student population, officials said.
This study examined adolescents' patterns of beliefs about aggression, and how these patterns relate to aggressive and prosocial behavior, and to risk factors associated with aggression. A sample of 477 sixth graders from two urban schools and a school in a nearby county completed measures of beliefs, behavior, and individual, peer and parental factors associated with aggression. Teacher ratings of participants' behavior and emotion regulation were also obtained. The urban sample was 84% African American; the county school was in a rural fringe area with a student population that was 45% Caucasian and 40% African American. Latent class analysis of items on a beliefs measure supported hypotheses predicting three groups: (a) a Beliefs Against Fighting (BAGF) group that opposed the use of agg...

'Victimhood is something that happens but when you turn it into an identity you're psychically and politically finished'One day, Jacqueline Rose came across a troubling passage in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu. The narrator, Marcel, lies beside his sleeping lover Albertine and masturbates against her. "It seemed to me at those moments," writes Proust in Carol Clark's recent Penguin translation, "that I possessed her more completely, like an unconscious part of dumb nature." Professor Rose, feminist and psychoanalytic critic, bristled. "I thought 'This is ridiculous – she'd have woken up by now!' I had my feminist reaction – which is not my most obvious default position – which is just let the woman speak."So Rose decided to awaken Proust's lover from her implausible slumber....

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is growing exponentially, contributing to an estimated 99,000 deaths from hospital-associated infections in the U.S. annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One reason that this is happening is that drug resistant proteins are transporting "good" antibiotics, or inhibitors, out of the cells, leaving them to mutate. In a paper recently published in the journal Nature, Professor of Biochemistry Dorothee Kern and collaborators including former postdoctoral student Katherine A... Poor schools even influence how parental education protects kids from becoming overweight. "It was once thought that family income was the main factor when we talk about the research on adolescent weight," said Molly Martin, assistant professor of sociology and demography. "That's not true.
This study assessed a targeted continuing osteoporosis educational program and investigated awareness and prevention of osteoporosis in Chinese female pre‐internship nurse students. A quasi‐experimental study was conducted. The program was presented to 256 nurse students. The baseline knowledge score of the nurse students was low (9.78 ± 3.13). They had inadequate osteoporosis health beliefs, self‐efficacy and related behaviors. The educational program significantly augmented osteoporosis knowledge (Student's paired t = −13.42, P < 0.001), total osteoporosis health beliefs (Student's paired t = −4.46, P < 0.001), and the subscale (P < 0.001) except for the perceived barriers to exercising and calcium intake.
AbstractThe worldwide academic workforce is ageing. At the same time, health and human services workforces are expanding. The preparation of educators to fill gaps in expertise and to position the health sciences for future growth is an urgent need. The findings from a recent action learning project that aimed to enhance the professional growth and development of higher degree researcher student supervisors in a School of Health and Human Sciences are presented. Seven early career researchers and the facilitator met for two hours every two to three weeks over 4 months between April and July 2010, in a rural and regional university in New South Wales, Australia. The processes initiated were a combination of experiential knowledge, referral to relevant published reports, use of an effectiv...

Conclusion:
The relative threshold-based algorithm used to automatically detect the four distinct phases of the SPT, is rapid, accurate and repeatable. A quantitative and thorough description of the precise phases of the SPT is prerequisite to better interpret biomechanical findings and measure task performance. The algorithm could also become clinically useful to refine the assessment and training of SPTs. (Source: Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation)

Conclusions:
Self-rated data suggest that migrant adolescents enjoy a physical health advantage and a mental health disadvantage. Layered social connections, such as peer association and social cohesion, may be particularly important for migrants. A public health effort is required to improve the health status of migrant youth. Here is a summary compiled by my colleague at UIC, Ed Garay.
Some key trends:
1) People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want to
2) The technologies we use are increasingly cloud-based, and our notions of IT support are decentralized
3) The world of work is increasingly collaborative, driving changes in the way student projects are structured
4) The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our roles as educators
5) Education paradigms are shifting to include online learning, hybrid learning and collaborative ...

Conclusions The current study, therefore, is an attempt to identify children with learning disorders and explore the prevalence of the
problem and etiological factors e.g., family environment, social factors and developmental issues of child and associated co-morbidities. More studies with larger
sample size should be undertaken to get accurate picture of these disorders. There is also need for some community based programme
to raise the level of awareness and knowledge about these disorders in general population.

This study examined the association of perceived social support and community empowerment among urban middle-school students
living in Matamoros, Mexico and the risk behaviors of fighting, alcohol and tobacco use, and sexual activity. Middle school
students (n = 1,181) from 32 public and private Mexican schools were surveyed. Weighted multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted.
Among girls, lack of parent/teacher interactions regarding school increased odds for fighting, alcohol and tobacco use. Among
boys, lack of empowerment increased odds of alcohol and tobacco use and lack of parent/teacher interactions regarding school
increased odds for sexual activity. Community empowerment and perceived social support are uniquely associated with risk behaviors

Cost of Knowledge petition criticises 'exorbitantly high' price of Elsevier's scientific journals and the publisher's 'huge profits'More than 3,000 academics, including several Fields medal-winning mathematicians, have put their names to a petition declaring their intention to boycott the academic publisher Elsevier. The "Cost of Knowledge" petition claims Elsevier charges "exorbitantly high" prices for its journals and criticises its practice of selling journals in "bundles" so libraries "must buy a large set with many unwanted journals, or none at all". It says the publisher makes "huge profits by exploiting their essential titles, at the expense of other journals".The petition also criticises Elsevier's support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), PIPA and the US Research Works Act, wh...

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced its funding decisions for higher education in England following the annual grant letter (Note 1) from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and subsequent decisions by the HEFCE Board. This announcement covers HEFCE funding for the academic year 2012-13 (Note 2).
The overall level of government support for teaching in universities and colleges is set to increase over the next few years as a result of higher tuition fee loans under the Government’s new finance arrangements for higher education. HEFCE’s grant will reduce accordingly, but our commitment to supporting high-cost and strategically important subjects, widening participation and smaller specialist institutions will be maintained.

Conclusions: School suspension is associated with early adolescent tobacco use, itself an established predictor of adverse outcomes in young people. Findings suggest the need to explore process mechanisms and alternatives to school suspensions as a response to challenging student behavior in early adolescence.
In this study, a recurrent variant branch of the IAN arising just below the origin of the mylohyoid nerve was investigated in adult Indian cadavers allotted for dissection to the first year dental students of Government Dental College, Ahmedabad (India). The dissection was performed by the lateral approach to the infratemporal fossa. The nerve was found in 12 of 35 sides (34.3%) and 8 of 18 cadavers (44.4%). Thus, in our study it was not a rare variation of the IAN, where in most cases it innervated the lateral pterygoid muscle. In some cases, it terminated in the lateral pterygoid muscle. In others, it penetrated the muscle to join the anterior or posterior division of the mandibular nerve or its branches; thus, the variant nerve in such cases might be regarded as an additional root of th...

CONCLUSION: Especially the treatment of multiply injured patients is a challenge for young medical professionals. However, there is a high motivation to learn and train in emergency medicine. The students long for a practical trauma course compared to the advanced medical CPR course provided by the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University of Heidelberg. Those algorithm-based trauma courses do exist with PHTLS® and ATLS®. Based on these courses we developed the PHTLS® TEAM course.

Every once in a while, visitors to zoos get to see rather more of nature in the raw than they had perhaps bargained for.It happened this weekend at Colchester zoo, when Ash, a nine-year-old female barn owl, flew into a window during a display and landed, dazed and unsteady, on a ledge in the lion enclosure – where one lion knocked her to the ground, and another ate her. "It was over in seconds," a visitor told the local paper. "People were horrified.
Abstract World-wide, universities in health sciences have transformed their curriculum to include collaborative learning and facilitate
the students’ learning process. Interaction has been acknowledged to be the synergistic element in this learning context.
However, students spend the majority of their time outside their classroom and interaction does not stop outside the classroom.
Therefore we studied how informal social interaction influences student learning. Moreover, to explore what really matters
in the students learning process, a model was tested how the generally known important constructs—prior performance, motivation
and social integration—relate to informal social interaction and student learning. 301 undergraduate medical students participated
