Conclusions  Our results suggest that applicants who self‐report previous clinical experience may not be better candidates. In fact, on some measures of performance, these applicants may actually perform worse than those who report no clinical experience. (Source: Medical Education)

Conclusions: 1) A quality clerkship experience in Surgery can be provided by a non-traditional community-based system, 2) the distributed campus model does not lead to inequality of learning opportunities or surgical experiences, 3) Both students and community faculty strongly support the tutorial model, 4) Student learning has been confirmed by national metrics.

Conclusions: We found that students experiencing higher clinical volumes on surgical services, but less self-study time demonstrated statsically higher academic performance on objective evaluation, suggesting clinical experience may be of higher value than self-study and reading. Thus, as the structure of our training system adapts to abide by the duty hour restrictions for trainees, we must be conscientious that certain experiences on the floors and in the operating room are invaluable and cannot be substituted.
The Predictive Value of General Surgery Application Data for Future Resident Performance

Conclusions: Within our system, INTERVIEW, USMLE STEP1, and SKILL predict successful completion of a general surgery residency. In contrast to prior reports, female sex, ethnicity, medical school grades, or Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society (AOA) status were not significant. The variable SKILL is novel and highlights the importance of nonacademic background data. Our data indicate STEP1 is an independent predictor of resident success in general surgery and should maintain an important role in general surgery applicant screening. The ideal screening threshold is likely > 215.
Conclusions.-In the UPMC pathology program, 2-digit scores on USMLE step 1 of 90 or more and 80 or less were strong measures of ABP first-time pass/failure rates, whereas scores of 81 to 89 were less-accurate measures. The USMLE step 1 score is one of many criteria that can be used for screening applicants for a pathology residency program.

Conclusions: Even though all general surgery programs have a wide range of screening/selection criteria, USLME Step 1 is the single most important factor for preliminary screening, and the interview is the most important factor in determining the final selection. The final selection is relatively subjective and based on a combination of interview, USLME scores, research experience, and personal judgment. (Source: Journal of Surgical Education)

Effects of comprehensive educational reforms on academic success in a diverse student body

Conclusions  The effect sizes in these performance improvements surpassed those previously reported for isolated interventions in curriculum and student support. This success is likely to have resulted from the broad‐based, mutually reinforcing nature of reforms in multiple components of the education system. The results suggest that a narrow reductionist view of educational programme reform is less likely to result in improved educational outcomes than a system perspective that addresses the coordinated functioning of multiple aspects of the academic enterprise.
Conclusions: The USMLE is a significant predictor of residency ABA/ASA In-Training Examination and ABA written examination performance in anesthesiology. Our program has significantly increased its average written board examination performance while increasing the relative importance of USMLE in resident selection.

Conclusions: The ERAS application is useful for predicting subsequent competency based performance in surgical residents. Receiving honors in the surgery clerkship, which has traditionally carried weight when evaluating a potential surgery resident, may not be as strong a predictor of future success.
Conclusions Residents who are more likely to fail the ABS qualifying and certifying examinations can be identified by a low USMLE Step 1 score and by poor performance on the ABSITE at any time during residency. These findings support the use of the USMLE Step 1 score in the surgical residency selection process and a formal academic intervention for residents who perform poorly on the ABSITE.

Conclusions: USMLE Step 1 scores showed limited utility in predicting later ABSITE scores whereas Step 2 scores were more predictive of all years of ABSITE scores. These findings should prompt additional research into the relationship between examination performances at different points along the general surgery education continuum. In the mean time, general surgery program directors and faculty might do well to examine the relationships between Step 1 and Step 2 scores and ABSITE scores in their own programs to evaluate the usefulness of considering either score when ranking potential residents for selection into a program.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that OKAP examination performance is a predictor of a resident's success in passing the ABO-WQE on the first attempt, as well as within 3 years of graduation from an ophthalmologic training program. Awareness of this association may permit identification of residents at risk for failing the ABO-WQE and encourage educational remediation to prevent this failure.Financial Disclosure(s): The authors have no proprietary or commercial interest in any of the materials discussed in this article.
Conclusions: Most of the factors the authors assessed in prospective applicants did not predict future problems, with the exception of negative (even mildly so) comments in the dean's letter. The authors suggest that more attention should be paid to the use of the dean's letter to assess risk among applicants, and prospective study of this assessment should be performed.

Educators consider medical students' performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE, Step 1 to be a measure of how well students learned basic science and medical concepts. So, the University of Texas Medical Branch, or UTMB, School of Medicine in Galveston was pleased when failure rates on this critical examination plunged by more than two-thirds after the school implemented comprehensive curriculum changes. An even greater drop in failure rates was seen among underrepresented minorities. (Source: AAFP Resident and Student Focus)

Abstract Based on users’ health issues, an intelligent personal health record (iPHR) system can automatically recommend home medical
products (HMPs) and display them in a sequential order. However, the sequential output interface does not categorize search
results and is not easy for users to quickly navigate to their desired HMPs. To address this problem, we developed a navigation
interface for retrieved HMPs. Our idea is to use medical knowledge and nursing knowledge to construct a navigation hierarchy
based on product categories. This hierarchy is added to the left side of each search result Web page to help users move through
retrieved HMPs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques using USMLE medical exam cases.

On Nov 16, 2009, the UK introduced licensing of doctors—the US way. However, in the USA, it is not just the spelling, “license”, that is different. To obtain a licence to practise, a doctor must sit the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). USMLE is a comprehensive three-step test of minimum knowledge and skills that are required for unsupervised medical practice. For instance, step 1 consists of questions on basic and clinical sciences, such as the example in the from the official USMLE website. USMLE ranks candidates into performance percentiles and serves as a national standard, independent of individual medical schools. (Source: LANCET)

Abstract Web-based personal health records (PHRs) are being widely deployed. To improve PHR’s capability and usability, we proposed
the concept of intelligent PHR (iPHR). In this paper, we use automatic home medical product recommendation as a concrete application
to demonstrate the benefits of introducing intelligence into PHRs. In this new application domain, we develop several techniques
to address the emerging challenges. Our approach uses treatment knowledge and nursing knowledge, and extends the language
modeling method to (1) construct a topic-selection input interface for recommending home medical products, (2) produce a global
ranking of Web pages retrieved by multiple queries, and (3) provide diverse search results. We demonstrate the effectiveness

Conclusion: Our program uses the USMLE Step I (3-digit) score as a preacceptance estimate of likely supplemental guided mentoring needs. Program mean OITE YIT percentile rank and PGY-3 OITE YIT percentile rank scores help identify educational deficiencies and predict eventual Abos-I and II passage. Subjective clinical performance evaluations provide important supplemental information regarding professionalism, communication, and patient care skills.
CONCLUSIONS: USMLE and COMLEX scores are strongly related for internal medicine residency applicants who took both exams. Our sample performed approximately 0.8 standard deviation higher that the national COMLEX means on both Level 1 and 2 but at the national mean on USMLE Step 1 and 2. The variation in scoring methodology and potential differences between the study sample and individual applicant characteristics suggesteject caution should be taken in using a given COMLEX score as a predictor of performance on the USMLE.

Abstract Traditionally, medical schools have tended to make assumptions that students will “automatically” engage in self-education
effectively after graduation and subsequent training in residency and fellowships. In reality, the majority of medical graduates
out in practice feel unprepared for learning on their own. Many medical schools are now adopting strategies and pedagogies
to help students become self-regulating learners. Along with these changes in practices and pedagogy, many schools are eliminating
a cornerstone of extrinsic motivation: discriminating grades. To study the effects of the switch from discriminating to pass–fail
grading in the second year of medical school, we compared internal and external assessments and evaluations for a second-year
class ...

An increasing demand for integrated vascular residency training far outweighs the limited supply of positions

Conclusion: The number of integrated vascular surgery residency applicants far outweighs the number of available positions. Growing interest in more efficient and comprehensive vascular surgery training will continue to augment demand. As educators, vascular surgeons should seize this opportunity and aggressively expand the number of available integrated residency training positions.
Does Medical Student Membership in the Gold Humanism Honor Society Influence Selection for Residency?

Conclusions: IM PDs were more aware of GHHS (70%) than SURG PDs (30%). Awareness was related to the favorable ranking of GHHS as a selection criterion for humanism/professionalism/service orientation. PDs familiar with GHHS were from larger programs, were likely to know residents who were members, and were likely to think that GHHS membership predicted humanistic care. Membership in GHHS may set candidates apart from their peers and allow PDs to distinguish objectively the candidates who demonstrate compassionate medical care. Increased knowledge about the GHHS may therefore serve to be a useful adjunct for PDs when selecting medical students for their residency programs.
Abstract This perspective is a counterpoint to Dr. Brass’ article, Basic biomedical sciences and the future of medical education: implications for internal medicine. The authors review development of the US medical education system as an introduction to a discussion of Dr. Brass’ perspectives.
The authors agree that sound scientific foundations and skill in critical thinking are important and that effective educational
strategies to improve foundational science education should be implemented. Unfortunately, many students do not perceive the
relevance of basic science education to clinical practice.

The University of California at Davis School of Medicine offers a prematriculation program to nontraditional students. As part of the program, students take a 7-day course on the gross anatomy of the upper limb that concludes with a written examination and a practical examination based on prosections.

Conclusions No single USMLE Step is more strongly associated with IM-ITE scores than the others. Because previous IM-ITE scores are strongly
associated with subsequent IM-ITE scores, appropriate modeling, such as random effects methods, should be used to account
for previous IM-ITE administrations in studies for which IM-ITE score is an outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: From 2004-2007, publishers produced 45 USMLE preparation resources (total n = 546) to every 1 NBDE preparation resource (total n = 12). Users' needs, institutional missions and goals, financial status, and official collection policies most often underlie decisions to collect or not collect examination preparation materials. Evaluating the quality of examination preparation materials can be problematic due to lack of published reviews, lack of usability testing by libraries, and librarians' and library users' unfamiliarity with the actual content of examinations. Libraries must integrate faculty and students into the purchase process to make sure examination preparation resources of the highest quality are purchased.
