Background resident features namely age, gender, self-reported ethnicity, time between medical school graduation to residency (pre-hire time), USMLE step I & II clinical ski...

Statistical significance was defined as P value <0.05. The r values for USMLE Step 1 and ITE percent correct in PGY I, II and III were 0.46, 0.5...

The University of California at Davis School of Medicine offers a prematriculation program to nontraditional students. As part of the program, students take a 7-day course on the gross anatomy of the upper limb that concludes with a written examination and a practical examination based on prosections. Here, the performance of students who took the course from 2002 to 2004 (n = 48) is compared with their performance in the medical gross anatomy course as well as their performance on Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Both rank in the prematriculation program's anatomy course and the score on the examination were correlated (significant at the 0.01 level) with performance on the medical gross anatomy midterm and final examinations, the overall final grade, and...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Progress testing is a form of longitudinal assessment in which students sit for a series of examinations, each covering the spectrum of knowledge required for completion of the undergraduate medical programme. Most commonly, all students at a school sit for the same test at intervals during the year, and growth in knowledge for each year group and individual student is tracked over the duration of the undergraduate course. Test results can facilitate early identification of high and low achievers and provide guidance for remediation of knowledge deficits. In addition, by aggregating student performance in specific topic areas and analyzing it in relation to learning experiences, test results can be used to monitor and evaluate the contribution of individual curriculum components to student...

Conclusions No single USMLE Step is more strongly associated with IM-ITE scores than the others. Because previous IM-ITE scores are strongly
associated with subsequent IM-ITE scores, appropriate modeling, such as random effects methods, should be used to account
for previous IM-ITE administrations in studies for which IM-ITE score is an outcome.

CONCLUSIONS: From 2004-2007, publishers produced 45 USMLE preparation resources (total n = 546) to every 1 NBDE preparation resource (total n = 12). Users' needs, institutional missions and goals, financial status, and official collection policies most often underlie decisions to collect or not collect examination preparation materials. Evaluating the quality of examination preparation materials can be problematic due to lack of published reviews, lack of usability testing by libraries, and librarians' and library users' unfamiliarity with the actual content of examinations. Libraries must integrate faculty and students into the purchase process to make sure examination preparation resources of the highest quality are purchased.

The New England Journal of Medicine Image Challenge "provides an opportunity for you to use the clinical images from NEJM to test your diagnostic skills.A new image and question appears each week, along with several possible answers. Before selecting an answer, you can take a closer look by zooming in and moving the image within the frame. You can also look at the relative distribution of answers chosen by other users." Source: NEJM.The Image Challenge is a good review tool for USMLE, ABIM or residency in-service exams. When I studied for USMLE, I used to group clinical images from NEJM under system headings, e.g. Cardiology, Pulmonology, etc. but the image quiz/challenge is more fun.The NEJM Image Challenge is, in a sense, a Web 2.0 tool -- it relies on user-created content in terms of re...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Abstract Proper interpretation of the results of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) is important for program directors,
residents, and faculty who advise applicants about applying for residency positions. We suspected that applicants often misinterpreted
their performance in relationship to others who took the same examination. In 2005, 54 consecutive applicants to the University
of Tennessee, College of Medicine internal medicine residency program were asked to complete a brief survey about their performance
on Parts 1 and 2 of the USMLE exam. When asked what percentile their Part I score represented, slightly over one in ten were
unsure or did not know, and nearly three out of five wrote in their two-digit score. Of the 15 who wrote in another number,

CONCLUSIONS A strong association exists between the third year GPA and internship ratings by program directors in professionalism and
knowledge. In combination with third year grades, either the USMLE step 1 or step 2 scores predict poor knowledge ratings.
Despite a wealth of available markers and a large data set, predicting poor performance during internship remains difficult.

USMLE Step 1 Scores as a Significant Predictor of Future Board Passage in Pediatrics.

CONCLUSIONS: The data suggests that performance on USMLE Step 1 is an important predictor of a resident's chances of passing the pediatric boards. This information, which is available when a resident initiates training, can be used to identify those at risk of not passing the boards. While Step 1 scores should not be used as a sole determinant in the recruiting process, individual learning plans can be developed and implemented early in training to maximize one's ability to pass the certifying exam.

Abstract The academic performance consequences of relying solely on non-cognitive factors for selecting applicants above a GPA and MCAT threshold have not been fully considered in the literature. This commentary considers the impact of using a “threshold approach” on academic performance as assessed with the USMLE Step 1.
