Conclusion: A research approach that is creative and consistent with empowering and inclusive practice has been employed in this study. Furthermore, greater attention in research methods to the often neglected area of people&rsquo;s stories is advocated. Historically, in mental health care, people have felt oppressed by statutory service providers. Narrative approaches in research enable the person to become centre-stage, and, as a parallel to creative expression, the person is given a voice.
The numerous tremors and after-shocks that followed the February 27 earthquake in Chile have added new levels of stress to an already shaken population. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has therefore made mental health care a priority in its response to the disaster. Simultaneously, as the nights grow colder and the chance of rainfall increases, MSF is speeding up its distribution of plastic sheeting and blankets for people whose homes were damaged and who are now often camping outdoors.
The MSF psychological team is providing direct counselling and psychosocial workshops for various groups, and debriefings for medical staff. It is also lending support to local authorities by training volunteers who will be deployed to provide mental health care in the affected areas.

In the current HE climate with the emphasis on research it is timely to also raise the profile of teaching as an aspect of university business which should have equal status with research, especially where quality teaching could be argued to enhance university activity and prestige with the CETL funding. So, in the final year of the Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning this conference will consider the concept of the 'scholarship of teaching' particularly in relation to sharing learning with students.

Both MU CETLs have a wide range of experience of working with professionals as worker/ learners in different work contexts so the conference will focus upon teaching and learning from the perspective of both the learner and the teacher, considering themes around negotiated learnin...

Conclusions
Pragmatic education on best practice for cause-of-death certification is a basic step to ensure accurate information for each individual case, leading to the production of high quality mortality statistics for epidemiology, public health policy and research. Development of new educational interventions or modification of existing programmes should be based on evidence of the benefits from current and past interventions provided under varying circumstances.
A strategic plan is being developed for a 10-year, national effort to digitize and mobilize images and data associated with biological research collections. The plan aims to create a publicly available, comprehensive collections resource that will increase access to biological collections across the country. The plan was drafted by workshop participants at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in February 2010.

The strategic plan is seen as &#8220;a grand challenge&#8221; and will be undertaken &#8220;as a unified mission involving a coordinated funding program and well designed strategy for execution.&#8221; The plan calls for the development of cyberinfrastructure &#8220;to promote efficient and standard capture and mobilization of these data to make the national biological collect...

Editors are expected to not only accredit good content, but to take an active role in managing, developing and promoting their publication in both print and online. To be successful takes not only excellent academic knowledge and judgement, but also understanding of how to maximise the potential of a journal.

This course is designed to allow editors the space to meet peers and discuss successful techniques for developing their journal - meeting the needs of authors, readers, their publishers and the public (industry, professions, research, etc.).

Course objectives

By the end of the two days, editors will have an action plan for their journal, to help them manage their workflows, develop the journal strengths and minimise its weaknesses.

They will also be able to:

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in Chile have increased the distribution of medical supplies and relief material in the regions of Maule and Bío Bío, which were severely impacted by the earthquake that struck the country 12 days ago. Additionally, a team of psychologists is supporting the training of mental health workers who will assist the affected people.

The First Days After the Quake
Pierre Garrigou, a MSF logistician from Argentina, describes the situation he encountered in the first days after the quake: “Inland, in the areas far from the coast, there were lots of destroyed buildings, lots of rubble. Yet on the coast, earth tremors were compounded by a tsunami, which really devastated everything. While your home may collapse as a result ...

The killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) anthropology component of the 15th International Histocompatibility Workshop (IHIWS) sought to explore worldwide population variation in the KIR loci, and to examine the relationship between KIR genes and their human leukocyte antigen (HLA) ligands. Fifteen laboratories submitted KIR genotype and HLA ligand data in 27 populations from six broad ethnic groups. Data were analyzed for correlations between the frequencies of KIR and their known HLA ligands. In addition, allelic typing was performed for KIR2DL2 and 3DL1 in a subset of populations. Strong and significant correlations were observed between KIR2DL2, 2DL3 genotype frequencies and the frequency of their ligand, HLA-C1. In contrast, only weak associations were seen for 3DL1, 3DS1 and the ...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

The explosion in new knowledge in the last three decades has imposed important challenges in the training of all health workers, including dentists. These breakthroughs do not rapidly permeate educational cirricula. This is particularly relevant in Periodontology, because of recent breakthroughs in diagnostics and therapeutic approaches and by the advent of new knowledge on the implications of periodontal and peri-implant infections on systemic health and on ageing populations. Periodontology as one of the major oral health sciences requires a broad understanding of a spectrum of healthcare and basic sciences, together with specific education. In preparation for graduation, students must demonstrate a variety of acquired learning out-comes, which, in turn demand variety in learning and tea...

There is a definition of Medical Informatics and then some rationale for teaching throughout the curriculum. Several examples of how this might be accomplished in the course of routine use of Clinical Information Systems are demonstrated. Resouces for curriculum development and additional learning are also provided. (Source: Family Medicine Digital Resources Library (FMDRL) Recently Uploaded)

In his kidney monitoring workshop at the AGM in November last year, Dr Chris Kingswood (Consultant Nephrologist and Voluntary Head of Research TSA) was asked the following questions:
Q: My child is 6 and has had a kidney ultrasound at 1 year and 4 years, both of which were clear. Does he need one final scan?

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health, has announced that more than 70 reports by the National Academies are now available online at NLM&#8217;s Bookshelf.
The Bookshelf is a searchable, online collection of freely accessible biomedical books and other material. You may visit it directly, or search it from the NLM&#8217;s Entrez interface (the same one you use for PubMed).

The new reports include workshop summaries, as well as formal reports, that were funded by NIH and produced by the four organizations that comprise the National Academies: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council.

The Wall Street Journal: FDA is putting on workshops for pharmaceutical manufacturers to increase the pool of applicants for approved "orphan drugs," that treat rare diseases. Currently, there are about 7,000 so-called orphan diseases in the U.S. that have few or no FDA-approved treatments. "Getting an orphan-drug designation opens the door to incentives once the FDA approves a medicine for sale in the U.S., including seven years' marketing exclusivity and tax breaks. Last year, just 250 requests for orphan-drug designation were filed, and 160 received it... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

As a consequence, design of such trials based on a mortality outcome requires ever increasing numbers of patients. Recognizing that advances in clinical trial design might be applicable to these trials and might allow trials with fewer patients, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute convened a workshop of extramural experts from several disciplines. The workshop assessed the current state of clinical research addressing...

This commentary grows out of an interdisciplinary workshop focused on controversies surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder (BP) in children. Although debate about the occurrence and frequency of BP in children is more than 50 years old, it increased in the mid 1990s when researchers adapted the DSM account of bipolar symptoms to diagnose children. We offer a brief history of the debate from the mid 90s through the present, ending with current efforts to distinguish between a small number of children whose behaviors closely fit DSM criteria for BP, and a significantly larger number of children who have been receiving a BP diagnosis but whose behaviors do not closely fit those criteria. We emphasize one emerging approach, which gives part or all of that larger number of ...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

The objective of the workshop was to review this research and to establish priorities for future research. Several of the trials presented at the workshop showed some effect of nutritional interventions (e.g. vitamin D, Zn, Se) on immune parameters. One trial found that increased fruit and vegetable intake may improve the antibody response to pneumococcal vaccination in older people. The workshop highlighted the need to further clarify the potential public health relevance of observed nutrition-related changes in immune function, e.g. susceptibility to infections and infectious morbidity.

Phase I clinical trials represent the first step in bringing promising new treatments from the laboratory to the clinic. Although the importance of phase I clinical trials is widely recognized, there is currently no consensus among the scientific, medical, and statistical communities on how best to do these studies in humans. With the advent of targeted therapies, it has become evident that we need to tailor the design of phase I studies for the particular drug class under investigation and any endpoints that are being defined. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Investigational Drug Steering Committee (IDSC) provides broad external scientific and clinical input on the design and prioritization of early-phase clinical trials with agents for wh...

Lambert–Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is thought to be an extremely rare disorder of the neuromuscular junction, and it is thought that many cases succumb from underlying malignancy. There are a number of potential pitfalls in making the diagnosis, and LEMS is frequently missed, whereupon the patient is assumed to have a myopathy as the cause of proximal weakness, or a neuropathy if hyporeflexia and autonomic features are predominant. The post exercise CMAP test for this disorder is extremely easy, safe and quick, but it will only be positive if the test is actually done. Specific therapy with 3,4 diaminopyridine±pyridostigmine is very effective. An immune versus tumour effect is reasonably well substantiated – this means that survival is longer or long term, and also suggests that...

The pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is not entirely understood, although 5–10% of cases are familial with the remainder termed sporadic. While there have been case reports of ALS developing following electrical trauma, a recent systematic review suggested that there was no convincing evidence for a causal relationship. Herein, we describe a 25-year-old male patient who developed ALS with initial onset in the right upper limb, soon after sustaining a severe electrical injury to the same region, associated with the development of structural abnormalities involving the motor pathways evident on magnetic resonance imaging. Assessment of cortical excitability with transcranial magnetic stimulation demonstrated a relatively inexcitable motor cortex, with a significant in...

BPPV can sometimes prove resistant to conventional treatment. This may relate to physical limitations, multi canal pathology or cupulithiasis (otoconia which is stuck). In our clinic we now have the ability to treat these patients using the Epley Omniax Rotator. This device allows the patient to be rotated in any axis with no effort required for either subject or staff. Eye movements are recorded using an infrared camera. Computer analysis of the nystagmus assists with the accurate diagnosis of the BPPV type to facilitate effective treatment. Since December 2008 we have attended to 86 cases. Fifty of these had canalithiasis with seven affecting the lateral canal one in the anterior and 42 in the posterior. 15 of these cases had cupulolithiasis with 12 having it in the lateral canal, two in...

HIV infection is associated with several forms of peripheral neuropathy, the most common being a distal sensory polyneuropathy, either from HIV viral infection or antiretroviral drug therapy. Mechanisms of disease remain incompletely understood with some evidence implicating envelope glycoprotein gp120 mediated neuronal apoptosis for the former, and mitochondrial toxicity±DNA polymerase gamma involvement in the latter. We studied 16 HIV positive patients, 14 of whom had neuropathy (10 HIV infection alone, 4 drug related). Clinically neuropathic patients were all symptomatic and had abnormalities in nerve conduction studies (13), and thermal quantitative sensory testing (11). Heart rate variability was abnormal in 4 patients in at least 1 of 3 parameters. Using the Qtrac Trond protocol, th...

Introduction: Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy utilised in the treatment of colorectal cancer, produces prominent dose-limiting neurotoxicity. Acute neurotoxicity develops immediately following infusion and resolves within days, while chronic neuropathy develops with higher cumulative doses.
Background: It is not routine practice in Australia for comatose ICU patients to have continuous EEG monitoring. These patients are at significant risk of developing subclinical seizures including status epilepticus. The technical demands required for standard 10/20 EEG system severely limit its application for ICU monitoring. We undertook a pilot study to optimise the 2-channel EEG system in detecting seizures demonstrable on 10/20 system, as lead up to a prospective study of its utility in continuous ICU EEG monitoring.
We present a case of isolated median thenar branch palsy due to brachial neuritis. The patient presented with painless thumb weakness without sensory loss. Nerve conduction studies showed severe distal median nerve motor dysfunction with active and chronic denervation of abductor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis on electromyography. The remainder of the study was normal. Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials ruled out a proximal lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging did not reveal a compressive aetiology. Clinical and electrophysiologic improvement occurred over the next year with no intervention. (Source: Clinical Neurophysiology)

Reviews the book, Revitalizng retirement: Reshaping your identity, relationships, and purpose by Nancy K. Schlossberg (2009). Therapists, counsellors, and life coaches working with older middle-age adults will find this handbook to happiness in retirement a useful working tool. The author introduces the book by stating that some content resembles notes she resurrected from a freshman undergraduate lecture on personal development; accordingly, both the format and the issues discussed in this book generalise to life span motivational needs, but the intended focus is on the transition to retirement. As a result, this book would make a useful tool for a support group or workshop on psychosocial transitions in postemployment life, with some limitations.
Recently a client came into my office asking, “Where are all the men?” At age 32 and well in to her career, she has found it increasingly difficult to meet men over the last few years, and is now wondering where she will meet her knight-in-shining-armor.&nbsp;&nbsp;
As we brainstormed about different strategies she might use and places she might go, I thought of several female friends who always seem to meet more men than they could ever date.&nbsp; Shavannia Williams, who runs a blog called “Heels & Helmets,” instantly came to mind.&nbsp; Her blog and workshops cater to women who are interested in learning more about how to connect with men through sports.
So, I called Shavannia and asked her for her thoughts on where my clients might go to meet men.&nbsp; As we talked, she ex...

A professional video production company was hired to create the training and certification videos for both PC-NIHSS and CC-NIHSS. Two training and certification workshops were held in Chengdu and Beijing, and two workshops in Hong Kong. The instruction, training and group A certification videos were presented to workshop attendees. Unweighted [kappa] statistics were used to measure the agreement among raters, and the inter-rater agreements for PC-NIHSS and CC-NIHSS videos were compared with those of original English language NIHSS (E-NIHSS) videos. The pass rates using PC-NIHSS and CC-NIHSS videos were 79% and 82%, respectively. All possible responses...

These programs have been successfully delivered in corporate and governmental settings. Recently I have turned my attention to teaching married couples the same skill set. Having mediated thousands of divorces it has occurred to me that if many of the couples I had helped divorce had learned better conflict resolution skills, many of those marriages might have been successful. But as I have developed this program and reviewed the many books on the market about couples and conflict one fact that has emerged is that intimate couples require a very different approach to conflict reso...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

How can public speaking become&nbsp;easier for introverts? Here's a glimpse of what we discussed earlier this week during the first session of my Presentation Skills for Introverts workshop at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies:&nbsp;

Prepare. Public speaking is much easier for introverts when we gather our thoughts ahead of time. Preparing an outline, opening line, and closing line can help focus your thoughts and reduce your nervousness.
Practice on videotape. It’s hard to know how you come across—what your voice sounds like, what you do with your hands with your speak, and how much filler (e.g., um, er) you use. Practicing on videotape, or at least in a mirror, can make a real difference.

The objective of the EU-funded integrated project ACuteTox is to develop a strategy in which general cytotoxicity, together with organ-specific toxicity and biokinetic features, are used for the estimation of human acute systemic toxicity. Our role in the project is to characterise the effect of reference chemicals with regard to neurotoxicity. We studied cell membrane potential (CMP), noradrenalin (NA) uptake, acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, acetylcholine receptor (AChR) signalling and voltage operated calcium channel (VOCC) function in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells after exposure to 23 pharmaceuticals, pesticides or industrial chemicals. Neurotoxic alert chemicals were identified by comparing the obtained data with cytotoxicity data from the neutral red uptake assay in 3T3 mo...

The Asian and Pacific Islander population (Asian Americans) in the U.S. has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Yet, data on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in this population are scarce. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health conducted an Expert Workshop to: 1) assess the importance of studying CVD in Asian Americans in the U.S.; and 2) consider strategic options for further investigations of CVD in this population. There is considerable geographical, ethnic, cultural, and genetic diversity within this population. Limited data also suggest striking differences in the risk of CVD, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and other CVD risk factors across the Asian-American population. The Asian-American population is a new diverse pool...

This article describes a program that gives individuals interested in clinical and basic sciences practical experience working with cadavers. Participants are selected through an open application process and attend sessions focused on anatomical terminology, gross anatomy and radiography, and some of the educational applications of human cadavers. Dissection skills are honed during an intensive, two-day cadaver dissection and orthopedic workshop. Participants communicate the knowledge they gain through table-side discussions, reflect upon the experience during a memorial service, and submit written program evaluations. Additionally, the dissection and preparation of cadaveric materials accomplished in this course are used in the medical school gross anatomy course during the next academic ...

This paper investigates the practice of using writing as a healing modality with patients traumatized by the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Based on the clinical experience of patients in an outpatient writing class, it investigates the stressors particular to cancer patients and the ways in which these stressors may affect inhibition and the ability to disclose. It poses the questions: How do we avoid retraumatization when facilitating a writing experience for this population? How does expressive writing&mdash;writing that asks the patient to confront trauma by expressing both the cognitive and emotional aspects of the trauma&mdash;compare with imaginative writing in effectively allowing for the three stages of recovery from trauma: safety, remembrance and mourning, and reconnection? ...

This article provides a review of how the challenge of bioavailability was approached in establishing the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), with a special focus on folic acid, vitamin B-12, beta-carotene, iron, selenium, and zinc, the targeted micronutrients for this workshop. In a future perspective, the necessity of having a clear working definition of bioavailability is emphasized. The bioavailability of micronutrients should be considered, with advantage, under subheadings determined by the broad factors that affect bioavailability. Special emphasis is given to giving greater and specific attention to factors involved in the maintenance of homeostasis. These factors, it is argued, are best considered separately from even a broad definition of bioavailability and have the potential to p...

This study aims to evaluate medical student and intern awareness of ionising radiation exposure from common diagnostic imaging procedures and to suggest how education could be improved. Fourth to sixth year medical students enrolled at a Western Australian university and interns from three teaching hospitals in Perth were recruited. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire consisting of 26 questions on their background, knowledge of ionising radiation doses and learning preferences for future teaching on this subject. A total of 331 completed questionnaires were received (95.9%). Of the 17 questions assessing knowledge of ionising radiation, a mean score of 6.0 was obtained by respondents (95% CI 5.8[ndash]6.2).
The goals of this workshop will be to provide authors (or potential authors) with a better understanding of what makes a good paper, where the common pitfalls lie with respect to writing and submitting papers, and what goes on 'behind the scenes' of the publication process. The potential benefits include an increased understanding of what it takes to publish in medical education journals specifically and the scientific literature more broadly. Participants will be asked to consider the following questions and issues: (1) What problems are commonly encountered, (2) What makes a good paper? Why do papers get accepted or rejected? (3) What happens to a paper during the review process? (4) Issues of style; (5) Ethical aspects of publication. (Source: MEDEV Events)

Do you feel like you're walking on eggshells around someone important in your life? Does this phrase immediately strike not just a chord but a whole piano concerto? If so, someone in your life may have either borderline personality disorder (BPD) or borderline traits. Take a look at the following questions. If you answer "yes" to most of them, your loved one might have BPD: • Does she see you in one of two modes: either a hateful person who never loved her or a source of blessed, unconditional love? • Does he continually put you in no-win situations? When you try to explain that his position is the opposite of what he said earlier, does it bring on more criticism? • Is everything always your fault? Are you the target of constant criticism? • Are there times when everything seems no...

This study aims to evaluate the face and construct validity of the Laparoscopic Skills Testing and Training (LASTT) model,
developed by the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery (EAGS) for assessing laparoscopic psychomotor skills (LPS). This
study is designed based on the Canadian Task Force II-1. This study was conducted in workshops organised by the EAGS in 2008
and 2009. One hundred ninety-nine gynaecologists were classified in three groups according to their exposure to laparoscopy
(G1: no/little, G2: intermediate, G3: important). Participants performed three repetitions of three exercises (E1: camera
navigation, E2: hands–eyes coordination, E3: bimanual coordination) with measurable objectives to accomplish within a limited
time frame. The face validity of the model was ...

Patients and practitioners expect that their endoscopy procedures will go smoothly and according to plan. There are several reasons why they may be disappointed. The procedure may fail technically (eg, incomplete colonoscopy, failed biliary cannulation). It may seem to be successful technically but turn out to be clinically unhelpful (eg, a diagnosis missed, an unsuccessful treatment), or there may be an early relapse (eg, stent dysfunction). In addition, some patients and relatives may be disappointed by a lack of courtesy and poor communication, even when everything otherwise works well.
DISCUSSION AND PERSPECTIVES: These topics were addressed during the workshop entitled "Aquatic Macrophyte Risk Assessment for Pesticides" (AMRAP) where a risk assessment scheme for aquatic macrophytes was proposed. Four working groups evolved from this workshop and were charged with the task of developing Tier 1 and higher-tier aquatic macrophyte risk assessment procedures. Subsequently, a SETAC Advisory Group, the Macrophyte Ecotoxicology Group (AMEG) was formed as an umbrella organization for various macrophyte working groups. The purpose of AMEG is to provide scientifically based guidance in all aspects of aquatic macrophyte testing in the laboratory and field, including prospective as well as retrospective risk assessments for chemicals.
Family medicine research capacity building: Five-weekend programs in Ontario.

CONCLUSION: This 5-weekend program, developed and tested in Ontario, stimulates community practitioners to learn how to answer research questions emerging from their practices. A 1-day seminar is adequate to train facilitators to successfully run these programs. Evaluations by both facilitators and program participants were very positive, with many participants stating that their clinical practices were improved as a result of the program. The program has been adapted for residency training, and it has already been used internationally.
