Flu activity, caused by either 2009 H1N1 or seasonal flu viruses, may rise and fall, but is expected to continue for weeks. It’s possible that the United States could experience another wave of flu activity caused by either 2009 H1N1 or seasonal influenza. (Source: CDC Swine Flu Updates)

The CDC says tuberculosis prevalence dropped 11.8% last year, as the World Health Organization reports about 440,000 multi-drug-resistant cases worldwide in 2008, a third of them fatal.

Even with tuberculosis cases falling sharply in the United States to historic lows, strains of drug-resistant disease are gaining ground elsewhere in the world. (Source: Los Angeles Times - Science)

The 2006 approval of Merck's human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (Gardasil) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) exemplified the potential of bench-to-bedside research. This vaccine against the virus that causes cervical cancer received immediate recommendation by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for routine use in girls aged 11 and 12 years, along with catch-up vaccination for girls and women aged 13–26 years.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes the five-fold increase in unintentional drug overdose deaths noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1990 and 2006 as a serious public health concern. Much of this increase follows from increases in the deaths from the use of opioid drugs, which in 2006 accounted for more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.
FDA Committed to Addressing Growing National Overdose Problem

The agency is also concerned about misuse of benzodiazepines (e.g., Valium and Xanax), which accounted for 272,000 emergency department visits in 2008 (compared to 367,000 for opioids).
No federal health agency changed more during the Bush administration than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It got new buildings, new managers and an entirely new operating structure. A year into the Obama administration, only the new buildings remain. Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the agency's director since June, has quietly scrapped nearly all the administrative changes that the previous director, Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, spent much of her six-year tenure conceiving and carrying out. (Source: RWJF News Digest - Public Health)

Newborn hearing screening is likely the most important public health initiative to ever occur within the field of hearing health. It has been known for decades that permanent hearing loss, which happens in at least three of every 1,000 babies born, in newborns is the most common birth condition.
The rate of hearing loss is about 10 times higher in babies who need specialized medical care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) because they have significant medical problems that put them at risk for developing a hearing loss.
Newborns hearing loss is often due to medical conditions, but it is also often caused by inherited traits from both parents, who most often have normal hearing. In fact, 90...

(Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America) Health-care personnel influenza immunization rates have remained low, despite recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading health-care organizations that all health-care personnel receive annual flu vaccines. The CDC, for instance, uses Twitter to provide constant updates on H1N1 influenza. Finally, Twitter offers an opportunity for doctors to ask questions of other medical providers. Given the real-time nature of Twitter, opinions and answers to clinical issues can be obtained immediately. Some doctors simply do not have enough time to Twitter, or utilize other social media applications like Facebook.
Obesity may limit the body's ability to develop immunity to influenza viruses, particularly secondary infections, by inhibiting the immune system's ability to "remember" how it fought off previous similar bouts of illness, according to new research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The results, published in the March 15, 2010, issue of The Journal of Immunology, support recent suggestions by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that obesity is as much a risk factor for H1N1 pandemic strains of flu as age (very young and very old) and compromised immunity...
This study examined the association of human and environmental factors with the presence of Aedes aegypti, the vector for dengue fever and yellow fever viruses, in a desert region in the southwest United States and northwest Mexico.
Sixty-eight sites were longitudinally surveyed along the United States–Mexico border in Tucson, AZ, Nogales, AZ, and Nogales,
Sonora during a 3-year period. Aedes aegypti presence or absence at each site was measured three times per year using standard oviposition traps. Maximum and minimum
temperature and relative humidity were measured hourly at each site. Field inventories were conducted to measure human housing
factors potentially affecting mosquito presence, such as the use of air-conditioning and evaporative coolers, outdoor vegetation
cover, and a...

HIV status has commonly been found to affect the serum lipid profile. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of HIV infection on lipid metabolism; such information may be used to improve the management of HIV-infected patients. Samples were collected from December 2005 to May 2006 at Yaounde University Teaching Hospital, Yaounde, Cameroon. Lipid parameters were obtained using colorimetric enzyme assays, while low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) values were calculated using the formula of Friedewald et al. (1972) and atherogenicity index by total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and LDLC/HDLC ratios. HIV infection was most prevalent in subjects aged 31 to 49 years. Most of the HIV-positive patients belonged to Centers for Disease Control and Pre...

Natural infection of vertebrate hosts by different lineages of Buggy Creek virus (family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus)

We report the first data on the BCRV lineages isolated from
vertebrate hosts under natural conditions. Lineage A was overrepresented among isolates from nestling house sparrows, relative
to the proportions of the two lineages found in unfed bug vectors at the same site at the start of the summer transmission
season. Haplotype diversity of each lineage was higher in bugs than in sparrows, indicating reduced genetic diversity of virus
amplified in the vertebrate host. BCRV appears to have diverged into two lineages based on different modes of transmission.

FluView reports that for the week of February 21 – February 27, 2010, flu activity in the United States was relatively low, with most flu continuing to be caused by 2009 H1N1.

(NaturalNews) There is an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency sweeping across our modern world, and it's an epidemic of such depth and seriousness that it makes the H1N1 swine flu epidemic look like a case of the sniffles by comparison. Vitamin D deficiency is not only alarmingly widespread, it's also a root cause of many other serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease.A new study published in the March, 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that a jaw-dropping 59 percent of the population is vitamin D deficient. In addition, nearly 25 percent of the study subjects were found to have extremely low levels of vitamin D.Lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Kremer at the McGill University Health Center, said "Abnormal levels of v...

(NaturalNews) High-dose vitamin D supplements may help increase the body's sensitivity to the blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin, thus reducing the risk of diabetes, researchers have found.Insulin resistance (or insensitivity) occurs when the body's tissues stop responding as strongly to the presence of insulin. As a consequence, the cells uptake less sugar from the bloodstream, producing the elevated glucose levels characteristic of diabetes. In the current study, conducted by researchers from Massey University and published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers randomly assigned 81 South Asian women between the ages of 23 and 68 to take either a placebo or 4,000 IU of vitamin D once per day. All participants suffered from insulin sensitivity at the start of the study, but ...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

The objective of this review was to summarize the current literature of community-based colorectal cancer screening randomized
controlled trials with multi-ethnic groups. The CDC reports 40% of adults do not receive time-appropriate colorectal cancer
screening. Although overall screening rates have improved since 2000, disparities remain. Studies examining community characteristics
may offer insight into improving screening rates and eliminating disparities. We identified community-based colorectal cancer
screening studies using PubMed and Ovid Medline database searches. Inclusion criteria were: community-based, randomized controlled
trials; English language; published from 1/2001 to 8/2009; all colorectal cancer screening test interventions recommended

This report describes the consensus-based selection process undertaken by a voluntary committee of policy/program leaders
and epidemiologists from seven states to identify core state indicators to monitor the health of reproductive age women (aged
18–44 years). Domains of preconception health were established based on priority areas within maternal and child health and
women’s health. Measures (i.e., potential indicators) addressing the domains were identified from population-based, state
level data systems. Each indicator was evaluated on five criteria: public health importance, policy/program importance, data
availability, data quality, and the complexity of calculating the indicator. Evaluations served as the basis for iterative
voting, which was continued until unanimous...

What do spinach, peanut butter, tomatoes, and cookie dough have in common? They have all been the source of major foodborne outbreaks and recalls in the USA over the years, and have led to widespread illness and a sharp drop in public confidence in food safety. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 76 million cases of foodborne illness occur yearly in the USA, which accounts for 325 000 admissions and 5000 deaths.
This report summarizes recommendations approved by ACIP on February 24, 2010, for 1) routine vaccination of all children aged 2--59 months with PCV13, 2) vaccination with PCV13 of children aged 60--71 months with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for pneumococcal disease or complications, and 3) PCV13 vaccination of children who previously received 1 or more doses of PCV7. CDC guidance for vaccination providers regarding transition from PCV7 to the PCV13 immunization program also is included.

This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which found that among 427 IPD cases with known serotype in children aged <5 years, 274 (64%) were caused by serotypes contained in PCV13. In 2007, an estimated 4,600 cases of IPD occurred in children in this age group in the United States, including approximately 2,900 cases caused by serotypes covered in PCV13 (versus 70 cases caused by PCV7 serotypes). PCV13 use has the potential to further reduce IPD in the United States. Post-licensure monitoring will help characterize the effectiveness of PCV13 in different populations and track the potential changes in disease burden caused by non-PCV13 serotypes.

This report updates the 1993 recommendations by CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) regarding the prevention of Japanese encephalitis (JE) among travelers (CDC. Inactivated Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine: recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices [ACIP]. MMWR 1993;42[No. RR-1]). This report summarizes the epidemiology of JE, describes the two JE vaccines that are licensed in the United States, and provides recommendations for their use among travelers and laboratory workers. JE virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is the most common vaccine-preventable cause of encephalitis in Asia. JE occurs throughout most of Asia and parts of the western Pacific. Among an estimated 35,000--50,000 annual cases, 20%--30% of patients die, and 30%--5...

Abstract Noroviruses are the enteric pathogens most commonly responsible for infectious gastroenteritis and outbreaks of foodborne
illness. The GII.4 norovirus, in particular, is responsible for the majority of epidemics. Here, we present data on the distribution
of norovirus genotypes in Chungnam, Korea, in 2008, measure genetic variation among GII.4 strains, and compare Korean GII.4
variants with reference strains based on the 237-bp junction of ORF1 and ORF2. We detected 139 different strains, which formed
two distinct genetic clusters with significant sequence diversity. One Korean cluster (2008-Korea_a) showed high similarity
to the Sakai cluster that appeared in Japan and Europe in 2006. The other cluster (2008-Korea_b) was unique and unrelated
to previously reported...

Abstract China has more and more floating population because of reform and opening-up. As one of the high burden countries in tuberculosis
(TB) control in the world, China has to face more challenges about the TB case detection and treatment among floating population
in China. Aim to evaluate the effect of case detection and treatment of the Floating Population TB Control Pilot Project from
Global Fund Round Five (GFR5) TB Control Program in China. During October 2006 to September 2008, the pilot project was implemented
gradually in 60 counties in Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong and Guangdong. All quarterly reports of
the pilot project were collected, and these materials were summarized and analyzed. In seven coastal provinces, 19,584 active

Candida spp. biofilms can be established on a wide range of materials, including implanted medical devices, and can display a resistant phenotype to antifungal drugs. Several factors, including host and surface properties, may influence the establishment and the development of Candida albicans biofilms on biotic and abiotic surfaces. We therefore selected a collection of C. albicans clinical isolates to evaluate the effect of surface and serum on biofilm attachment and development. Disc coupons from the CDC biofilm reactor were used in a well plate assay to study biofilm production on six different surfaces with or without the addition of serum: polycarbonate, polystyrene, stainless steel, Teflon, polyvinyl chloride or hydroxyapatite. Our results showed that serum increases in vitro C. alb...

Authors: Yingst S, Huzella LM, Chuvala L, Wolcott M
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists Brucella as a potential bioterrorism threat requiring enhanced diagnostic capacity and surveillance (http://emergency.cdc.gov/bioterrorism/). Successful treatment and management of patients after exposure to biological threat agents depends on accurate and timely diagnosis, but many biothreat agents present with similar, vague clinical signs - commonly referred to as 'flu-like illness'. Diagnosis of brucellosis is notoriously challenging, especially early in infection, and definitive diagnosis may require invasive methods, e.g., bone marrow biopsy. We studied the pathogenesis of B. suis aerosol infection in rhesus macaques in an effort to guide the diagnostic algorithm in case of...

We examined
the association between depression and sexual risk among “high risk” MSM. Evidence has been mixed regarding the link between
depression and risky sex, although researchers have rarely considered the role of psychosocial vulnerabilities such as self-efficacy
for sexual safety or “escape” coping styles. In a national sample (N = 1,540) of HIV-positive and HIV-negative MSM who reported unprotected sex and drug use with sex partners, we found evidence
that depression is related to HIV transmission risk. Self-efficacy for sexual safety and cognitive escape mediated the link
between depression and risk behavior, suggesting that psychosocial vulnerability plays an important role in the association
of depression with sexual risk. These findings may help us const...

Abstract To document changes in birth rates, birth outcomes, and pregnancy risk factors among women giving birth after the 1997 Red
River flood in North Dakota. We analyzed detailed county-level birth files pre-disaster (1994–1996) and post-disaster (1997–2000)
in North Dakota. Crude birth rates and adjusted fertility rates were calculated. The demographic and pregnancy risk factors
were described among women delivering singleton births. Logistic regression was conducted to examine associations between
the disaster and low birth weight (<2,500 g), preterm birth (<37 weeks), and small for gestational age infants adjusting for
confounders. The crude birth rate and direct-adjusted fertility rate decreased significantly after the disaster in North Dakota.
