Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is growing exponentially, contributing to an estimated 99,000 deaths from hospital-associated infections in the U.S. annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One reason that this is happening is that drug resistant proteins are transporting "good" antibiotics, or inhibitors, out of the cells, leaving them to mutate. In a paper recently published in the journal Nature, Professor of Biochemistry Dorothee Kern and collaborators including former postdoctoral student Katherine A...
February 7, 2012, marks the 12th annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a day that serves to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in the African-American community. According to the 2009 HIV Surveillance Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. In the 40 states with confidential name-based HIV reporting, African Americans accounted for 52% of all diagnoses of HIV infection in 2009 and for 44% of people living with AIDS in 2008.

Refugee children arriving in the United States have had higher rates of elevated blood lead levels than US-born children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends blood lead screening of all refugee children within 3 months after their arrival in the United States.
This is the first investigation we are aware of to examine and identify risk factors for lead poisoning among US-bound refugee children living in camps overseas, before their arrival in the United States. (Read the full article) (Source: PEDIATRICS)

This article describes a multistate population-based surveillance system for monitoring sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) known as the SUID Case Registry pilot program. The pilot program represents collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Child Death Review (NCCDR), which is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The SUID Case Registry builds on existing child death review system activities and protocols. The objectives of the SUID Case Registry are to collect accurate and consistent population-based data about the circumstances and events associated with SUID cases, to improve the completeness and quality of SUID case investigations, and to use a decision-making algorithm with standardized definitions to ca...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

This article presents the history and roles of the Infusion Therapy Team at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in CVC care and describes an organized patient education program that plays a key part in the institution's strategy to reduce and prevent CRBSI. Institutional standard policies and procedures for patient care should be in compliance with guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Joint Commission before any patient educational initiative is implemented. Such standards will serve as a guide to set up, organize, and implement an effective program.

An investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that between 1996 and 2008, the amount of leg and foot amputations among U.S. individuals, aged 40+ with diagnosed diabetes, decreased by 65%. The study, entitled "Declining Rates of Hospitalization for Non-traumatic Lower-Extremity Amputation in the Diabetic Population Aged 40 years or Older: U.S., 1988-2008," is published online in the current issue of Diabetes Care. In 1996, the age-adjusted rate of leg and foot amputations was 11.2 per 1,000 individuals with diabetes. However, in 2008 this rate fell to 3...
There has been a large drop in the rate of leg and foot amputations among Americans aged 40 and over with diagnosed diabetes, according to a new study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published in the February issue of Diabetes Care. The study reports that between 1996 and 2008 the rate of such amputations fell by 65%. The authors suggest the most likely reason for this large drop in leg and foot amputations among people with diagnosed diabetes is improvements in blood sugar control, foot care and management of diabetes...
This article presents the first focused evaluation of black–white differences in receipt and
completion of chemotherapy for breast cancer in a primarily rural region of the United States. We performed chart abstraction
on initial therapy received by 868 women diagnosed with Stages I, IIA, IIB, or IIIA breast cancer in 2001–2003 in southwest
Georgia (SWGA). For chemotherapy, information collected included treatment plan, dates of delivery, concordance between therapy
planned and received, and date and reasons for end of treatment. The patient’s age at diagnosis, race, marital status, insurance
coverage, hormone receptor status, comorbidities, socioeconomic status, urban/rural status, treatment site, and distance to
the site were also collected. Following univariate analyses, we ...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

Quality of life in younger patients treated for breast cancer is seriously compromised, and these women face more physical and mental health issues than women their age who haven't had cancer and women over 50 who have, according to a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study, published Jan. 20 in the peer-reviewed Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that younger breast cancer survivors suffer from a slew of problems, including severe psychological distress, infertility, premature menopause, a decrease in physical activity and weight gain.

The study points to the need for oncologists to let these younger patients know from the beginning of their therapy what may happen to them after it's finished, said the study's lead author, D...

Preoperative MRI helps surgeons make more informed decisions about nerve-sparing procedures in men with prostate cancer, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology. Excluding skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in American men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more american’s than ever are practicing “safer sex”. This means they are actually engaging in less “high risk for HIV” behavior, such as illicit drug use, multiple partners, or unprotected sex.
Use of condoms increased to 35% during 2006-2010 up from 30% in 2002.
The most important finding of the study is identifying which population groups are most at risk. For example, participants ages 20-24 are more likely to engage in one of the ten “risky behaviors”.
There’s no definitive reason for the decline in risky behavior, however this success could imply that the public health awareness campaigns are working.

A new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) documents a need for increased injury prevention efforts in many of the most popular activities for kids (walking, bicycling, swimming, sports and playground use) in the United States. Injury is the leading cause of death for young people in the U.S., yet many public health efforts to promote physical activity in kids do not consider the numerous available strategies to incorporate injury prevention...
Although rates of meningococcal disease have remained low in the United States since 2000, the severity of the disease, rapidity with which it strikes, and significant sequelae remain compelling reasons to employ all means possible to prevent it. Meningococcal disease has a bimodal peak distribution in the United States with its highest incidence rates in infants and adolescents aged 16 years and older. The 2005 recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were intended to protect youth entering adolescence including individuals 16–21 years of age, the ages at which meningococcal disease rates peak for children and young adults. Administration of the quadrivalent (serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135) meningococca...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

HealthQuest is a grant-funded community collaboration project that is part of the Centers’ Action Communities for Health, Innovation and Environmental Change, or ACHIEVE. The HealthQuest project started informally in 2007 and formally in 2009 after receiving a three-year grant from the centers. The project seeks to improve community health, especially by lowering obesity rates, through policy change, according to its mission. (Source: RWJF News Digest - Childhood Obesity)

The words “water safety” most often bring to mind emergency preparedness and responsible behavior in and around swimming pools. There is no doubt that maintaining a clean and safe swimming pool and surrounding area, understanding the risks associated with owning a swimming pool, taking actions to prevent drowning, teaching children to swim, and becoming trained to respond in emergency situations are incredibly important when it comes to home swimming pool safety. But since most of us aren’t using our swimming pools right now, today I’d like to highlight a less-publicized but just-as-important kind of water safety: keeping infants and young children safe in the bathroom.

After a 30-year, record-shattering rise, U.S. obesity rates appear to be stabilizing. New statistics cited in two papers report only a slight uptick since 2005 — leaving public health experts tentatively optimistic that they may be gaining some ground in their efforts to slim down the nation. Many obesity specialists say the new data, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are a sign that efforts to address the obesity problem — such as placing nutritional information on food packaging and revising school lunch menus — are beginning to have an effect in a country where two-thirds of adults and one-third of children and teens are overweight or obese.
The objective of this study is to observe pathogenic lesions of joint cartilages in rats fed with T-2 toxin under a selenium
deficiency nutrition status in order to determine possible etiological factors causing Kashin–Beck disease (KBD). Sprague–Dawley
rats were fed selenium-deficient or control diets for 4 weeks prior to their being exposed to T-2 toxin. Six dietary groups
were formed and studied 4 weeks later, i.e., controls, selenium-deficient, low T-2 toxin, high T-2 toxin, selenium-deficient
diet plus low T-2 toxin, and selenium-deficient diet plus high T-2 toxin. Selenium deficiencies were confirmed by the determination
of glutathione peroxidase activity and selenium levels in serum. The morphology and pathology (chondronecrosis) of knee joint

This month, an advisory scientific panel reported that lead in older homes harms children at lower levels than previously believed. It urged federal officials to protect more kids. Yet as the U.S. government considers this, Congress slashed from $29 million to $2 million the funds for a major lead-poisoning prevention program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Summary. Neutralizing inhibitors develop in 20–30% of patients with severe factor VIII (FVIII) deficiency. It is well established that Blacks have a higher prevalence of inhibitors than Whites. This is the first study to definitively demonstrate increased inhibitor prevalence in the Hispanic population. We compared inhibitor prevalence among various racial and ethnic groups in a cross‐sectional analysis of 5651 males with severe haemophilia A that participated in the Universal Data Collection project sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We used logistic regression analysis to control for potential confounding variables. We assigned as Hispanic those participants who were white and labelled themselves Hispanic.
Researchers have designed a new laboratory test that can quickly identify the bacterium that causes Staphylococcus aureus infections. The findings have been published in the January issue of the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. The researchers, from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have based their test on unique isotopic labeling combined with specific bacteriophage amplification to rapidly identify Staphylococcus aureus by using mass spectrometry to quantify the number of S...
More than one-third of adults and almost 17 percent of children were obese in 2009-2010, echoing results since 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday. "It's good that we didn't see increases. On the other hand, we didn't see any decreases in any group," said CDC researcher Cynthia Ogden.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) recently released Atlas, an interactive tool that allows people to access the surveillance data collected by NCHHSTP and create detailed reports, maps, tables, charts, and graphs.
Currently, the Atlas includes NCHHSTP surveillance data for HIV, AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and primary and secondary syphilis. Tuberculosis (TB) and viral hepatitis surveillance data will be added to the Atlas over the coming year.
The Atlas will help community leaders, public health professionals, policymakers, and health care providers understand the geographic patterns and data trends of these diseases.
Abstract This meta-analysis estimates the overall efficacy of HIV prevention interventions to reduce HIV sexual risk behaviors and
sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among heterosexual African American men. A comprehensive search of the literature published
during 1988–2008 yielded 44 relevant studies. Interventions significantly reduced HIV sexual risk behaviors and STIs. The
stratified analysis for HIV sexual risk behaviors indicated that interventions were efficacious for studies specifically targeting
African American men and men with incarceration history. In addition, interventions that had provision/referral of medical
services, male facilitators, shorter follow-up periods, or emphasized the importance of protecting family and significant

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act of 2009 (formerly the Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act) was first enacted into law in 1990, and amended in 1996, 2000, 2006, and 2009. In FY2010, HRSA, for the fourth year in a row, used total counts of living cases of HIV and living cases of AIDS in the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Program Parts A and B (formerly Titles I and II) allocation formulae. Prior to FY2007, only AIDS cases, adjusted by a survival rate (estimated living AIDS cases), were used in the formulae. Beginning in FY2007, persons living with HIV (non-AIDS) as well as persons living with AIDS, as reported to and confirmed by the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are used to calculate funding allocation amounts.
(American Museum of Natural History) A collaborative study led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified evidence of retroviruses and herpesviruses in illegally imported wildlife products confiscated at several US international airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental-Houston and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International. The preliminary results of the program demonstrate the potential human health risk from the illegal wildlife trade at major international travel hubs as a pathway to disease emergence in animals and humans.
Abstract Youth violence (YV) is a complex public health issue that spans geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines. The Asian/Pacific
Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center conducts qualitative and quantitative research on YV in Hawai‘i. A critical element
in YV prevention involves measuring YV and its risk-protective factors to determine the scope of the problem and to monitor
changes across time. Under the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center’s (APIYVPC’s) surveillance umbrella,
a variety of methodologies are utilized. The major forms of active surveillance are a School-Wide Survey for youth, and a
Safe Community Household Survey for adults. A variety of secondary data sources are accessed, such as the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevent...

Abstract The major mode of HIV/AIDS transmission in China is now heterosexual activities, but risk for HIV and sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) may differ among different strata of female sex workers (FSWs). Respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit
320 FSWs in Guangdong Province, China. The respondents were interviewed using a structured questionnaire, and tested for HIV,
syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. The street-based FSWs had lower education levels, a higher proportion supporting their
families, charged less for their services, and had engaged in commercial sex for a longer period of time than establishment-based
FSWs. The proportion consistently using condoms with clients and with regular non-paying partners was also lower. The prevalence

Abstract Young transgender women are at increased risk for HIV infection due to factors related to stigma/marginalization and participation
in risky sexual behaviors. To date, no HIV prevention interventions have been developed or proven successful with young transgender
women. To address this gap, we developed and pilot tested a homegrown intervention “Life Skills,” addressing the unique HIV
prevention needs of young transgender women aged 16–24 years. Study aims included assessing the feasibility of a small group-based
intervention with the study population and examining participant’s engagement in HIV-related risk behaviors pre- and 3-months-post-intervention.
Fifty-one (N = 51) young transgender women enrolled in the study.
We examined the extent of missing data and methods
in which HIV prevention randomized clinical trials (RCT) have managed missing values. We used a database maintained by the
HIV/AIDS Prevention Research Synthesis (PRS) Project at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify related
trials for our review. The PRS cumulative database was searched on June 15, 2010 and all citations that met the following
criteria were retrieved: All RCTs which reported HIV/STD/HBV/HCV behavioral interventions with a biological outcome from 2005
to present. Out of the 57 intervention trials identified, all had some level of missing values. We found that the average
missing values per study ranged between 3 and 97%. Averaging over all studies the percent of missing values was 26%. None...

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) released a report showing that the rate of twin births has risen quite substantially since the 1980s, especially amongst older women. In 1980, one in every 53 births was a twin birth, while by 2009 the number had risen to one in every 30, or three percent. The rise constitutes a 76 percent increase in twin births, from nearly 19 per thousand in 1980 to more than 33 per thousand by 2009. The rise can be seen across every state including DC, coming in at least fifty percent higher... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Abstract
Legionella are prevalent in human-made water systems and cause legionellosis in humans. Conventional culturing and polymerase chain
reaction (PCR) techniques are not sufficiently accurate for the quantitative analysis of live Legionella bacteria in water samples because of the presence of viable but nonculturable cells and dead cells. Here, we report a rapid
detection method for viable Legionella that combines ethidium monoazide (EMA) with quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and apply this method to detect Legionella in a large number of water samples from different sources. Results yielded that samples treated with 5 μg/ml EMA for 10 min
and subsequently exposed to light irradiation for 5 min were optimal for detecting Legionella. EMA treatment befor...
