Abstract
Mutations in troponin T (TNNT2) gene represent the important part of currently identified disease-causing mutations in hypertrophic (HCM) and dilated (DCM) cardiomyopathy. The aim of this study was to analyze TNNT2 gene exons in patients with HCM and DCM diagnosis to improve diagnostic and genetic consultancy in affected families. All 15 exons and their flanking regions of the TNNT2 gene were analyzed by DNA sequence analysis in 174 patients with HCM and DCM diagnosis. We identified genetic variations in TNNT2 exon regions in 56 patients and genetic variations in TNNT2 intron regions in 164 patients. Two patients were found to carry unique mutations in ...

Roughly 1 million people die by suicide each year. In the U.S., where nearly 36,000 people take their own lives annually, more than 4,600 victims are between the ages of 10 and 24, making suicide the third leading cause of death in this age group.

Youths treated at hospital emergency rooms for suicidal behavior remain at very high risk for future suicide attempts. But despite the urgent need to provide them with mental health follow-up care, many don't receive any such care after their discharge. Consequently, a major goal of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's National Strategy for Suicide Prevention has been to increase rates of follow-up care after discharge for patients who come to the emergency department (ED) due to suicidal behavior.

The exposure to asbestos, in even the smallest amounts, can lead to mesothelioma cancer.
Australia is in the process of switching from analog to digital television.
As part of the switchover program, the federal government had authorized the Satellite Subsidy Scheme, which had completed installations in 5,149 households in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Chairman James Smith says Shell has had to respond to the global warming challengeNow is a good time to be running an oil company. Prices are sky-high, energy demand is increasing at an unprecedented rate as the global economy recovers, and there are new markets to be explored. Royal Dutch Shell largely dodged the criticism heaped on the industry after BP's catastrophic oil spill last year in the Gulf of Mexico, and is delivering golden results to shareholders. Profits for 2010 were reported as $18.6bn (about £11.4bn), nearly double the $9.8bn for the year before. So it is not surprising that James Smith, Shell's outgoing UK chairman, speaks with a tinge of regret. At the end of the month, he will retire from the company he has been part of for 28 years, seven of them in his current role. ...

Abstract Memantine is an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, approved for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We conducted
a 4-month observational, post-marketing, Austrian study of memantine in 377 outpatients with moderate to severe AD. In this
‘real-life’ setting, memantine was well-tolerated, and produced benefits in cognition (Mini-Mental State Examination), activities
of daily living (Activities of Daily Living score), and global function (Clinical Global Impression scale). Treatment effects
were apparent in both pre-treated and treatment-naïve patient subgroups.

I get this a lot, and I have two standard responses which Kirby echoes. Firstly, this is a Christian nation, hence we discuss it more. Secondly, and a related point, problems with Islam have very little impact on my life in the UK.14:50: The Christian Party have an innovative approach to tackling climate change, according to Kirby - they plan to reinstate the observance of the Sunday Sabbath. The resulting drop in people doing stuff will of course drop carbon emissions massively. 14:49: More photos courtesy of official TAM photographer Kelly Haddow, of Paula Kirby mid-talk......and Karen James from earlier. 14:44: Kirby's talk is tur...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

Authors: Kilicarslan Toruner E, Savaser S
This research was conducted to assess the effect of a weight management program in Turkish school children with overweight and obesity. Forty one students formed the intervention group while 40 students formed the control group in two elementary schools. Students in intervention group were given seven training sessions in a period of 2.5 months. Concurrently, parents were given two trainings and consultancy. The Body Mass Indices (BMIs) of the intervention group at the third measurement were decreased (p < .05) significantly when compared to the control group. The findings suggest use of school-based weight management programs starting from elementary school.

The Science: So What? campaign is a classic example of how bad science is ignored when agencies are only interested in audience impactUnder the previous government, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) ran a campaign called Science: So What? So Everything (SSW). It was designed to encourage young people via websites, media reports and special events, to be inspired by the contributions of science to their lives. The SSW campaign was not without problems. The project included a website that was expensive and inefficient and got little traffic for a campaign of this type. And then there were serious concerns about the quality of some of the research that BIS was promoting. In particular, a report on future jobs in science by the Fast Future consultancy was heavily promoted...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors
