The end of last year was huge for HIVE Southampton with the massive task on putting on our first ever Charity Poker night and the return of the successful World Aids Day Gig.

Peter Rohloff, MD, a fourth year resident at Children’s Hospital Boston, was recently featured on ABC’s 20/20, where he was interviewed about his work as the founder of Wuqu’ Kawoq (pronounced woo-ku- ka-woke), a nonprofit organization committed to providing cultural and linguistically appropriate healthcare to the indigenous people of the Guatemalan Highlands.

Scott & White Healthcare has received a $1 million donation to support the Wayne & Eileen Hurd Regional Medical Center in Marble Falls.

Horseshoe Bay residents Robert and Barbara McFarland made the donation to the Scott & White fundraising campaign for the new clinic.

The hospital broke ground on the new medical center, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and Highway 71, on Nov. 16. The clinic building — which will serve as the anchor for the medical center campus — is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2013...
Here's a sample of what came home in my sons' backpacks last week: a flier announcing a before-school sale on bags of Hot Cheetos, Funyuns and other high-salt-and-fat junk foods. Plus, reminders about two separate parent-teacher organization fundraisers — one an offer to buy candied apples and the other a request for the children to sell chocolate bars... This is what our communities are up against. We're in the middle of a national, multigenerational obesity epidemic, yet so many of our public schools are in such tight financial spots that they resort to unhealthy appeals to help fund programs they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.
DISCUSSION: The public costs to implement and maintain CSH are modest. They leveraged substantial local funding and in-kind contributions, underlining community support for healthy eating and active living. Where CSH is effective in preventing childhood overweight, it is most likely cost-effective too, as costs for future chronic diseases are mounting. CSH programs that are proven effective and cost-effective have enormous potential for broad implementation and for reducing the public health burden associated with obesity.

Last Tuesday morning 1st, 2nd and 4th year medical students arrived at Southampton Hospital to find an array of cake to keep them going through the day’s lectures. From brownie to banana bread, cookie to cupcake, the HIV Education (HIVE) team were kept busy selling a multitude of baked goods all through the day, ultimately raising £215.64 for SIC!
This is our first fundraising event of many; throughout the year we will be holding one event each month for students across all the University, not to mention keeping up with our schools programme that takes HIV Education out into various secondary schools and sixth forms around Hampshire. Our recent bake sale was an ideal opportunity for medical students to talk to our new committee and find out exactly how they can get involved with HI...

Our nation is facing unprecedented rates of unemployment as well as job insecurity and dissatisfaction. Recent figures put the national jobless rate at close to 10%, not including those who left the workforce or those staying in unsatisfying jobs. In a culture that values the work role and external signs of status, wealth and achievement above all else.

On September 18, 2011, the Support for International Change staff participated in the first annual SIC Fall Fundraiser: the Arusha 5k! We had 30 SIC staff members, alumni, friends (and a gaggle of curious Tanzanian children) lace up their sneakers and race for the finish line. While Ephrem, our VCT counselor, technically won first place out of our SIC team, everyone felt like the winner when they made it to the end of the race.
It was most of the participant’s first time running a 5K but the idea of running to raise money for SIC programs kept them going strong. We raised an incredible $4,653 and this money will be spent entirely on the programs you pledged to support. Whether you were one of our generous donors, fearless racers, or simply posted the YouTube video link on your Face...

Discussion about proposed SPM guidelines announcement at Health 2.0 (submitted by Alan):

Overall, concept is good, and okay to do an announcement, but…

Consensus that this is good forum to announce, but less detail around what they are other than a stat...

It won’t take long for America to know that Monday, Sept. 26, is Mesothelioma Awareness Day, not when at least 50 advocates wearing bright orange Cure Meso t-shirts gather in New York’s Rockefeller Square at 5:30 a.m. to be on the set of NBC’s Today Show.
Good Morning, Matt Lauer.
Although there are fundraising events and awareness efforts waged throughout the year, no day claims more attention for the cause than Sept. 26, celebrated annually since 2004.

Celebrated violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn performed with the legendary "Red Mendelssohn" violin during an intimate Sept. 18 fundraising event in support of the UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases. The storied instrument, crafted in 1720 by virtuoso Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari, is widely considered one of the best sounding and most beautiful of Stradivari's violins and inspired the Academy Award–winning 1999 film "The Red Violin."

The afternoon affair was held in the Japanese garden of the Beverly Hills residence of entrepreneur and philanthropist Paula Kent Meehan, co-founder of the Redken hair products company, and was co-hosted by philanthropists Barbara Davis and Candy Spelling.
Discussion

SPM Value statements (& value proposition) are critical

Current SPM goals are not clear enough to potential members

Goal: a unified vision with core beliefs

Appeal to individual members and corporate members are different but related and must be developed in coordination with one another

Discussed the idea of surveying members (and potential members) to understand perceived value of SPM for (or ideas how SPM can support) participatory medicine

Identified potential “products” of SPM – J of Participatory Medicine, Certification, etc.

Should this remain public, or for members only access?

Having a hired person (e.g., Executive Director or even a talented assistant to start) would help

At least $150k to hire an ED, estimated

Individual should focus on ...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

Since the media recently renewed its interest in the decades-old crisis in and around Somalia, we’ve seen a surge of advertisements from aid groups, featuring starving children with visible ribs and staring eyes.
Now that the end of the SIC program is nearing, the Manyara group has been hard at work completing “special projects”. We are working hard to create Manyara village’s first HIV+ patients support group. After visiting several HIV+ patients in the previous weeks, we saw a real need in the community for support groups that would serve as a safe haven in which HIV+ patients can share their challenges and successes against HIV as well as ask for advice in a group of other patients. Because of the stigma against HIV in the community a huge source of stress on many HIV+ patients is the struggle to keep their statuses a secret. Many do not feel comfortable enough voicing their troubles. The goal is for the Manyara HIV+ support group to be a place where people feel safe talking about HIV surr...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

Accordingly, we have updated the PPMD United Way/CFC Fundraising Campaigns guide (PDF) which provides information on how local United Way operate and how to work to arrange funding through them. The guide also provides i...

Just months after Dr. Gerald S. Levey began interviewing for the position as head of one of the world's premier academic health centers, Mother Nature rewrote the job description. The 1994 Northridge earthquake damaged UCLA Medical Center beyond repair, and it soon became clear that a significant portion of Levey's mandate would be to oversee the building of a new hospital.

Levey stepped down nearly 16 years later, having amassed an extraordinary record of accomplishments, including unprecedented fundraising, elite rankings for UCLA's medical school and hospital, and the building of five new state-of-the-art facilities — including Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which was 14 years...

In the last of a three-part series, heartwire looks at how much public support, fundraising, and volunteerism the two diseases have garnered in recent years and whether cancer's long stint in the limelight may be what's boosting research opportunities and new therapies as CVD lags behind.
