Conclusion:
Extrinsic warming (to 37°C) does not appear to affect adverse event rates for intravenous injections of iopamidol 300 of less than 6 mL/sec but is associated with a significant reduction in extravasation and overall adverse event rates for the more viscous iopamidol 370.

Despite the recent announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), physicians still must begin transmitting claims using the new HIPAA 5010 format on Jan. 1. CMS is delaying "enforcement" of the 5010 standards, but TMA received clarification that "compliance" is still necessary for claim transactions. If you don’t submit claims using this format, you risk not having claims paid by private insurers as well as Medicare and Medicaid. (Source: Blogged_Arteries)

This past week, I was jolted out of my chair by news that a Pfizer-led group plans to buy access to patient data in hospitals . My initial reaction was anger, on a variety of levels: as a researcher, as one who is increasingly wary of the reach of huge corporations, and as an individual.Actually, it is not just Pfizer doing this a new consortium called the Partnership to Advance Clinical Electronic Research (PACeR) , includes Merck, Roche, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, Hoffman-La Roche, Quintiles, and Oracle. Their pitch sounds very reasonable, with a noble goal of speeding clinical research and bringing new medicines to market. The focus of the article describing this initiative in Business Week aptly described the business advantages: Delays in drug development are estimated to cost $1 m...

Nov 14: Files Comments Supporting HIPAA and CLIA Changes Giving Patients Access to Lab Results

The federal government issued proposed regulations that would make all lab results subject to the
basic rule that all patient records should be provided to the patient upon request. See the post on
e-patients.net explaining the proposed rule on access to lab results and its background. Following
discussion in the comments to the blog post and on the listserv, David Harlow filed comments on behalf
of the Society supporting the rule change, and opposing any delay in access by patients. Thank you to
everyone who participated in those discussions. See the S4PM comment letter. While the amendments
required in order to make these changes are small, surgical edits, final action and implementation of this
rule could take up to a year or more.

Abstract:
The duty to maintain a patient's health records dates back to the 4th century BC. Within the health care system, privacy and confidentiality are a part of the provider's requirements for quality health care. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 addresses the privacy and security of health care records. Title I ensures insurance portability, while Title II requires the use of national guidelines for electronic health communication. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has provisions to address health information technology for economic and clinical health. Nurse practitioners must understand both laws.
Last week, the federales published a draft rule that would remove the lab-result-specific ban on delivering results directly to the patient (this applies to freestanding labs only – hospital lab results, for example are already covered by HIPAA patient access requirements). See: Federal Register | CLIA Program and HIPAA Privacy Rule; Patients’ Access to Test Reports – http://bit.ly/qVi4dC
Some of the physician commentariat have already come out against this proposal, saying patients lack the context/knowledge with which to interpret results, and may mistakenly (a) ignore a result that may warrant some worry – and followup, or (b) worry unnecessarily about a benign result.

Conclusion:
MR imaging-guided breast biopsy was canceled due to lesion nonvisualization in 8% of the patients. Although the cancer detection rate among the lesions for which biopsy was canceled is low (95% CI: 0%, 9%), short-term follow-up MR imaging is prudent.

Some physician practices may be too slow out of the starting gate when it comes to racing the deadline
for conversion to HIPAA version 5010 in just four months. Not only do physicians need to upgrade their practice
management systems or ensure that their billing service has made the necessary updates, they will need to collect
and report additional information for claims to be processed, and change established billing practices. Not sure of
the penalty of failing to get to the finish line on time? Here?s a hint: It involves not getting

Conclusions. Communication between the FDA and pharmaceutical manufacturers regarding adverse event reports is not well understood by pharmacy students. Education about adverse event reporting should evolve so that by the time pharmacy students become practitioners, they are well acquainted with the relevance and importance of adverse event reporting.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the current UK guidelines state that "Doctors must not "friend" their patients on Facebook."

Should a doctor block his/her patients on Google+ then? What about Twitter?

Social media platforms, their use, and the perception of the ways they are used are all changing. The ban of professional use of the most popular services is not the way forward.

Doctors are natural communicators and should do very well on social media platforms. Patients, and society in general, would only benefit from physicians who share ideas and focus on education.

Simple guidance for social media use
The suggested guidance for social media use by health professionals is very simple and based on a recent book by a nurse and social media advocate:

Abstract Security control of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a mechanism used to manage electronic medical records files and protect
sensitive medical records document from information leakage. Researches proposed the Role-Based Access Control(RBAC). However,
with the increasing scale of medical institutions, the access control behavior is difficult to have a detailed declaration
among roles in RBAC. Furthermore, with the stringent specifications such as the U.S. HIPAA and Canada PIPEDA etc., patients
are encouraged to have the right in regulating the access control of his EMR. In response to these problems, we propose an
EMR digital rights management system, which is a RBAC-based extension to a matrix organization of medical institutions, known

MR imaging-guided breast biopsy was canceled due to lesion nonvisualization in 8% of the patients. Although the cancer detection rate among the lesions for which biopsy was canceled is low (95% CI: 0%, 9%), short-term follow-up MR imaging is prudent.

This is a true story, but the names and a few minor details have been changed in deference to HIPAA. I
first met Bobby in 2002, when he was 8. His quality of life had been marred by severe eczema since infancy, but
things got worse when he was diagnosed with asthma at age 6 and insulin-dependent diabetes a year
 later.
The Medical Group Management Association is calling on the Department of Health and Human Services to withdraw its proposed HIPAA “accounting of disclosures” rule, due to the burden it would put on practices to provide such a report – and the possibility that it might deter them from implementing new technology.

Conclusion:
Absolute values and reproducibility of CT perfusion parameters were markedly influenced by motion and data acquisition time. PS, in particular, probably requires data acquisition beyond a single breath hold, for which motion-correction techniques are likely necessary.

For this reason, firewall-secured electronic messaging systems have been developed for use in health care. The Kryptiq messaging system was implemented at an academic center and messages were monitored continuously and tracked. In the 8 months after implementation, only 5 messages were initiated by patients in contrast to 2,363 phone calls.Patients/families expressed strong interest in e-mailing but secure Web messaging was:- less convenient than using the phone- too technically cumbersome- lacked a personal touch- only by a handful of patientsOne pediatrician on Twitter wants a simpler solution:@Doc...
