The thought-provoking column by Dr Peter Greco in the November issue of the AJO-DO couldn’t have been better timed! It had us trying to reflect on the few decennia of advancements and innovations in orthodontics that have helped define our specialty as it is today. On a clinical note, although these innovations might undoubtedly have revolutionized the way we practice orthodontics (in terms of increased efficiency and productivity), they have also taken some of the excitement (patient-personalized wire-bending) from our specialty by a great degree.
To Be or Not to Be Price Conscious—a Segment‐Based Analysis of Compromise Effects in Market‐Like Framings

This article reports two consecutively implemented studies demonstrating that the compromise effect is robust even in an enhanced design that incorporates basic conditions of real purchase decisions in laboratory‐based experiments. Specifically, the relative share of the middle option increases significantly in an overall analysis when experienced consumers make unforced decisions between real brands in a binding choice context. However, segmented analysis indicates substantial differences, meaning that (1) the compromise effect is strong and significant among quality‐seeking consumers, whereas (2) the compromise effect is weak and insignificant among price‐conscious subjects.
Adolescent Evaluations of Brand Extensions: The Influence of Reference Group

This study examines the reference group effect on adolescent evaluations of brand extension. Three factors are important to this process: the product fit between parent and extension category (similar vs. dissimilar), the consumption type of the extension product (public vs. private), and the parent brand image (prestige‐oriented vs. functional‐oriented). An experiment with 217 teenagers generally supports the hypotheses. Results suggest that adolescents are willing to pay a higher price premium to publicly consumed brand extension product than a privately consumed. In addition, the level of category similarity enhances the consumption type effect. Managerial implications on brand extension strategy in adolescent's market are discussed.
ABSTRACTAlthough widespread belief holds that salespeople can leverage their personal relationships with prospective customers to gain business, previous research has not investigated the implications of friendships between salespeople and customers for customers’ postpurchase satisfaction and fairness judgment. Findings from two experiments show that friendships benefit salespeople only when the outcome of the transaction is unfavorable. Specifically, when salespeople and customers are close friends rather than acquaintances, the customers perceive an unfavorable outcome as relatively more fair and satisfactory, but such an effect does not occur when the outcome of the transaction is favorable. This paper also shows that customers’ perceived fairness mediates the interaction effect be...

This study investigates the influence of customer satisfaction and elapsed time since purchase on customers’ explicit and implicit knowledge of price. The results of two large, independent surveys of customers who purchased a consumer durable good indicate that customer satisfaction and elapsed time have different effects on explicit versus implicit price knowledge. Customer satisfaction has a negative impact on explicit price knowledge, but no substantial effect on implicit price knowledge. The length of time between purchase and retrieval of the price information has a negative impact on explicit price knowledge but no substantial effect on implicit price knowledge. Finally, customer satisfaction has a moderating role, in that the higher the customer satisfaction level, the stronger th...

Practicing a learned profession within a commercial culture has never been simple. The overlapping status of medicine in the United States as both a vocation and a business means that the borderlines of ethics and self-interest are constantly being drawn and redrawn. Medical professional organizations, like physicians, need to balance their healing mission and their cash flow. To an increasingly visible community of observers, many of these groups have lost this balance, even to the point of forfeiting the credibility as an independent professional authority. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the suspension of all marketing authorisations for oral medicines containing meprobamate, a sedative used to treat symptoms of anxiety and related conditions, including anxiety states, alcohol withdrawal, migraine attacks, digestive disorders, muscle tension or cramps, and insomnia. The decision was taken because the risks of these medicines, particularly of serious CNS adverse effects, are greater than their benefits.

To ensure prescribers have enough time to determine the most appropriate treatments for patients, the withdrawal from the market will be carried out gradually, within 15 months of the decision.
Source: EMA
Area: News
The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has adopted a negative opinion, recommending the refusal of the marketing authorisation for pralatrexate (Folotyn), intended for the treatment of peripheral T-cell lymphoma.
&#160;
The Committee was concerned that the main study was designed in a way that did not allow the assessment of benefit, particularly since the drug was not compared with any other treatment or placebo. Moreover, the study only assessed response to treatment so impact on progression free- or overall-survival is not known. Therefore the Committee concluded that the medicine's benefits did not outweigh its risks. (Source: NeLM - News)

Have you heard about the bald Barbie movement? It&#8217;s a grassroots, digital campaign asking Mattel to make a version of the doll without her trademark golden locks to benefit children with illness. According to the group&#8217;s Facebook page, which has gained more than 130,000 fans in less than a month, bald Barbie would let &#8220;children suffering cancer, alopecia and any other illness that causes them to lose their hair, feel just as beautiful as the dolls they play with.&#8221;
Regardless of how people feel about the plastic fashion icon—she&#8217;s been around for more than half a century but still seems to be a very polarizing figure; often because of her figure—the online support for bald Barbie is undeniable.
The role of disease characteristics in the ethical debate on personal genome testing

DiscussionIn this paper, we identify and discuss four disease characteristics - severity, actionability, age of onset, and the somatic/psychiatric nature of disease - and show how these lead to specific ethical issues. By way of illustration, we apply this framework to genetic susceptibility testing for three diseases: type 2 diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and clinical depression. For these three diseases, we point out the ethical issues that are relevant to the question whether it is morally justifiable to offer genetic susceptibility testing to adults or to children or minors, and on what conditions.SummaryWe conclude that the ethical evaluation of personal genome tests is challenging, for the ethical issues differ with the diseases tested for. An understanding of the ethical...

Demand for the gills of manta and mobula rays has risen dramatically in the past 10 years for use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), even though they were not historically used for this purpose, a team of researchers from the conservation organizations Shark Savers and WildAid has discovered.&#8220;We first came across manta and mobula ray gills in Asian markets several years ago, and followed the trail to the dried seafood markets of southern China,&#8221; Manta Ray of Hope Project lead investigator Paul Hilton said in a prepared statement ( pdf ) released on January 14. Specifically, the market was for gill rakers, the thin filaments that manta and mobula rays use to filter food from the water, which are being sold for up to $500 per kilogram. TCM practitioners are marketing the rake...

Abstract&nbsp;&nbsp;Biosimilars are equivalent drugs for other biotechnological drugs for which patent has expired. These biopharmaceuticals are
often looked upon as simple copies of parent drugs whose goal is solely to potentially generate costs savings. The expansion
of available drugs is a subject of attention, criticism and quarrels, often related to a lack of product knowledge. These
drugs are copies but need scientific development that must meet many strict rules. Many questions arise in connection with
the marketing of several biosimilar drugs in the field of hematopoietic growth factors of white and red cells. Many of them
should be discussed.

(University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management) Basketball fans in Cleveland may disagree, but two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Lebron James' decision to play with a higher-profile Miami Heat team and all-star teammates shows sound marketing and career-management acumen, according to newly published business school research focused on the evolution and importance of star status for today's professional athletes. In order to maximize their earnings and endorsements, today's celebrity athletes need to be mindful of the evolution of their star status.
High-quality foster placements can help a foster-child to thrive and can counter some of the risk factors normally associated with being a foster-child. Unfortunately, demand for foster-carers has been outstripping supply. The present study sought to identify the characteristics of people who have high potential to become a foster-carer. A large, representative sample from the general population (544 male; 544 female; Mage = 40.8; SD = 13) completed an anonymous survey that included comprehensive measurement of demographics, personal resources (e.g. social support), personal characteristics (e.g. hope) and foster-care interest, intentions and information seeking. Analyses revealed that people who sought information about and expressed interest/intention towards foster-caring where those wh...

In this study, we used a molecular approach for the detection of histamine‐forming bacteria in fish. PCR‐based methods require expensive equipment and a high degree of training for the user, but are fast (&lt; 24 h) and reliable. They now represent the best predictive methods to identify a potential risk factor in fish products during processing, storage, and marketing and can be used in the investigation of risk reduction strategies. I don't want to be too specific about the publisher. I don't think it matters who they were, although it wasn't Elsevier.About ten years ago we were negotiating the terms and conditions for the renewal of a large contract involving publicly funded research outputs. We were trying to reach fair price essentially, somewhere on a continuum between £0 and £several million per annum. &nbsp;Difficult. At one point we wrote to the publisher asking two questions:How were they going to take account of the financial contribution from the public sector into the production of the research, which we estimated conservativel...

A great many creative works exist because intellectual property laws allow people to spend time creating when they&#8217;d otherwise work non-creative jobs to pay the rent. The internet has, on balance, been a marketing boon for content creators, especially for small artists who previously could only access buyers through layers of intermediaries. But easy distribution has a down side. Parasites flourish in environments where content is copied so freely. International piracy is an especially tricky problem for content creators in developed countries, and some of the larger content owners have crafted this thing called SOPA in an attempt to fight back. In essence, SOPA allows content creators to...

July 2011 marked the 40th anniversary of social marketing. However, while the previous Labour administration dedicated sustained resources and support to developing the field of social marketing, this was followed by a time of uncertainty during the Coalition Government&rsquo;s ascent to power. This paper explores the potential future position of social marketing within David Cameron&rsquo;s evolving public health landscape, outlining areas of synergy between social marketing&rsquo;s key features, and the coalition&rsquo;s emergent public health architecture. The paper concludes with an exploration of the development opportunities nascent within social marketing, suggesting that support for the new commissioners (GP and local authority), and an enhanced emphasis on evaluation of financial ...

    Abstract
Rapidly changing dietary practices and a sedentary lifestyle have led to increasing prevalence of childhood obesity (5-19 yr) in developing countries recently: 41.8% in Mexico, 22.1% in Brazil, 22.0% in India, and 19.3% in Argentina. Moreover, secular trends indicate increasing prevalence rates in these countries: 4.1 to 13.9% in Brazil during 1974-1997, 12.2 to 15.6% in Thailand during 1991-1993, and 9.8 to 11.7% in India during 2006-2009. Important determinants of childhood obesity include high socioeconomic status, residence in metropolitan cities, female gender, unawareness and false beliefs about nutrition, marketing by transnational food companies, increasing academic stress, and poor facilities for physical activity. With 40% of the kids in Georgia overweight or obese (only Mississippi is worse), health advocates decided that it was time for “a wake-up call.” So the Strong4Life campaign and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta have released print and TV ads with obese kids and slogans like “It’s hard to be a little girl when you’re not.”
Ouch. I mean, really. Imagine being on a playground and having some kid point at you and say, “You look like the fat girl on TV!” What were they thinking?

NHS PIP breast implants to be removed for free

There is not enough evidence to recommend the routine removal of PIP breast implants, a government expert committee has concluded.
However, the committee said the NHS would remove and replace the implants without charge if patients it had operated on remained concerned. The government said it expected the private sector to follow suit and not to charge for corrective procedures.
The French implants caused global concern after it was revealed they contained industrial silicone rather than medical-grade fillers and that they may be more prone to rupture and leakage. Some 40,000 women in the UK are believed to have had the implants, with 95% of operations done for cosmetic reasons through private clinics.
The expert group recommended that any worried woman should speak to her surgeon or GP.

    Abstract
There is a pressing need to reduce both the prevalence and impact of obesity. This review begins with a discussion of the roles of treatment and prevention. Two overriding issues, weight bias and the addictive nature of food, are covered because of their importance not only to the individuals affected but also to public policy. We then cover promising policy areas in which changes can be implemented to support healthy behaviors: school policy, food marketing, food labeling and packaging, and taxes on unhealthy foods. The roles of the food industry and federal, state, and local governments are also discussed. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology Volu...

There are approximately 1,000,000 residents living in more than 38,000 assisted living communities across the nation. An overwhelming majority (as high as 90%) of those residents are using private funds to pay for assisted living, with some receiving assisted living services through Medicaid waiver programs. This emphasis on private pay contributes to a consumer-driven model of care, but it also places increased significance on the role of marketing and sales activities. While recognizing the value of the consumer-driven nature of the industry, it is also important to recognize the need for marketing and nursing staff to work collaboratively to ensure that a particular assisted living community/provider is able to deliver on the care and services that are promised during the sales process....<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Sponsor Message:</i></b> Find the best <a href="http://www.januarysales.org/" target="_blank">January Sales</a> in the UK.</p></div>

In today’s medical market, marketing philosophy is being rapidly transformed from customer searching to patient satisfaction and service improvement. The principal objective of this study was to contribute to the establishment of a desirable medical marketing strategy, through the factors of customer satisfaction and the positioning of patients’ perceptions by marketing institutions. The data were collected from 282 students of the College of Public Health and Medicine in Seoul. The survey tools were developed using the SERVQUAL scale. Analysis in this study involved both statistical and network analysis. The former was used to verify the determinants of service satisfaction as perceived by respondents, via factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The latter was obtained using...

The Intra‐ and Inter‐Personal Dynamics Associated with Consuming Sensitive Products: Understanding the Consumption of Erectile Function Aids Using Dimensional Qualitative Research

This study utilizes a dimensional qualitative research (DQR) approach to examine what men think, feel, and experience as they consider integrating erectile function (EF) aids into their sexual relationships. The findings suggest that the process of accepting changes in sexual functioning and consuming EF aids frequently moves beyond intrapersonal issues to encompass spouse/partner relationships. The insights gleaned from this study have implications not only for the marketing of EF aids but also for healthcare professionals assisting men in the treatment of their symptoms. Finally, the study findings expand current marketing applications of the DQR framework by demonstrating the value of second‐order modality analysis. (Source: Psychology and Marketing)

When Satisfied Consumers Do Not Return: Variety Seeking's Effect on Short‐ and Long‐Term Intentions

ABSTRACTEven satisfied consumers frequently do not come back, which challenges loyalty theory and marketing practice. It is reasoned that variety‐seeking tendencies will significantly affect short‐term revisit intentions, whereas satisfaction and regret will mostly determine long‐term revisit intentions. Thus, the influence of satisfaction on loyalty is hypothesized to be critically dependent on the time perspective of the intentions, now or later, and variety seeking. A representative survey (N = 400) in eight Spanish cities supported these predictions. Multivariate moderated‐mediation analyses revealed that indeed the influence of satisfaction, regret, and variety seeking critically depends on the time perspective of the behavioral intentions.
Consumer Intentions to Revisit Online Retailers: A Mental Imagery Account

ABSTRACTThe current research explores the role of Web site characteristics, such as animation and iconic navigation aids, in predicting consumers’ self‐reported intentions to revisit a retailer's Web site. An experimental study (n = 339) shows that Web site characteristics do not affect revisit intentions directly but through the vividness of mental images that consumers hold of the Web site as a whole. Vivid mental Web site imagery is stimulated by animation and facilitated by individual tendencies to put faith in intuitive rather than rational thinking, while it does not relate to the use of icons in navigation. The implications of these findings for researchers, Web designers and marketers are discussed. (Source: Psychology and Marketing)

ABSTRACTThis research focuses on a previously unexamined risk associated with the widely used new product development strategy of line extensions. Specifically, it explores consumer reactions when line extensions become too visually similar and examines both short‐term and longer term strategies for solving the problem. Examined in the context of consumer durables, specifically, automobiles, the results show that consumers who make categorization mistakes when trying to distinguish between two visually similar product lines have more negative attitudes not only toward the product but also toward the parent brand. The results of Study 1 confirm that providing a design vocabulary that articulates the car's design features is effective in reducing consumer's categorization mistakes. In addi...

Federal officials are requiring health plans to give consumers more information about how they are spending their premium dollars. In a final rule, the Health and Human Services department made changes to its existing regulations governing health plans' medical-loss ratio (MLR). Under the Affordable Care Act, health plans must spend at least 80% of their premium dollars on medical care and quality improvement activities. For large group plans, the threshold is 85%. If plans spend more than the allowed amount on other costs, such as overhead and marketing, they must provide rebates to consumers. (Source: Clinical Neurology News)

The new global economic scenario has driven cities to urban entrepreneurialism and to a holistic marketing approach to define and manage successful redevelopment projects. Positioning in the chosen target market requires an image and a brand to communicate the city values, the assets that make her unique and better than her competitors. Urban design based on iconic buildings is one of the models of the culture‐led regeneration programs that are being developed to re‐image the city, to make her an attractive tourist destination. The present study analyzed the image and perception of Bilbao 10 years after the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, and concluded that more than the spectacular landmark should be considered to create a new image. Abstract
Strategic partnership is a logical approach to face some of the public health problems. However, its application is somewhat more complex. In this paper our experience with three networks (Agita São Paulo, Physical Activity Network of Americas, and Agita Mundo Network) was described. In the case of Agita São Paulo even the name was a consequence of a partnership with a marketing company, and is an idiomatic expression that means much more than just to move your body. It also means to move psychologically and socially, with the concept of "active citizenship". Among the important features of that intervention, we highlighted: (a) national and international intellectual partnership; (b) strong institutional partnerships, including government in one hand,...
