March 19, 2010
A student-pharmacist-led, California statewide teaching program for physicians, medical students, and other health care providers is successfully demonstrating the importance of health policy literacy and interprofessional education at a time in the U.S. that begs for systemic reforms. "At this point, we really have no choice but to look for team-based collaborations," said Helene Levens Lipton, PhD, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member. "We often pay lip service to the importance of interprofessional education. Our peer-to-peer Part D lecture delivers the goods."

The lecture is a component of a larger program, called Partners in D, that is led by the UCSF School of Pharmacy in partnership with 6 other pharmacy schools in California. Partners in D is funded by a $3.7 mil...

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the histone/protein deacetylase SIRT1 are fuel-sensing molecules that have coexisted in cells throughout evolution. When a cell's energy state is diminished, AMPK activation restores energy balance by stimulating catabolic processes that generate ATP and downregulating anabolic processes that consume ATP but are not acutely needed for survival. SIRT1 in turn is best known historically for producing genetic changes that mediate the increase in longevity caused by calorie restriction. Although the two molecules have been studied intensively for many years, only recently has it become apparent that they have similar effects on diverse processes such as cellular fuel metabolism, inflammation, and mitochondrial function. In this review we will examine the...

The FDA is drafting new guidelines for testing and approving multidrug cocktails for life-threatening diseases, the Wall Street Journal reports. "Many diseases, such as AIDS, tuberculosis and cancer, require multidrug combinations. Such drug cocktails can prevent the development of drug resistance, because the microbe or cancer cell needs to undergo more mutations to escape several drugs than to escape just one. By attacking the disease in different ways, drug combinations also improve the chances of therapeutic benefit," the newspaper reports (Schoofs, 3/18)...
Spring break is here and many teenage girls may be tempted to take their first drink. The Science Inside Alcohol Project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science suggests that parents, teachers and caregivers help girls delay that first drink by telling them what scientific research shows regarding their ability to handle alcohol compared to boys. There's reason to worry. The number of teens who use alcohol rose 11% from 2008 to 2009, according to a new report from the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Teens are drinking younger and more often... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

The 5-year strategy from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, released in December, 2009, proposed a laudable goal: the prevention of 12 million HIV infections. But success will require resolving a deep gulf dividing the prevention community. One camp sees that multiple sexual partnerships drive infection in generalised epidemics in eastern and southern Africa, dispersed through the broad population. The other emphasises the large number of already infected individuals, particularly the many existing discordant couples, and stresses widespread HIV testing. But careful examination of these complex generalised epidemics reveals a crucial role for both components (), and provides a basis for a unifying approach. (Source: LANCET)

In September, 2000, an unprecedented gathering of world leaders attended the UN Millennium Summit in New York, NY, USA, and adopted the UN Millennium Declaration committing their nations to a new global partnership to halve the number of people living in poverty by 2015. Several development targets and goals were set, including several in health that are collectively known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals are at the heart of achieving sustainable development through poverty eradication. MDGs 4, 5, and 6 cover the main health priorities in development: child survival, maternal and reproductive health, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. (Source: LANCET)

In the current HE climate with the emphasis on research it is timely to also raise the profile of teaching as an aspect of university business which should have equal status with research, especially where quality teaching could be argued to enhance university activity and prestige with the CETL funding. So, in the final year of the Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning this conference will consider the concept of the 'scholarship of teaching' particularly in relation to sharing learning with students.

Both MU CETLs have a wide range of experience of working with professionals as worker/ learners in different work contexts so the conference will focus upon teaching and learning from the perspective of both the learner and the teacher, considering themes around negotiated learnin...

It's South by Southwest time here in Austin, and I'm always inspired to write a post related to movies, metaphors, and careers. (Here's my post from last year.)A constant question from reporters these days is whether I'm seeing any change in the job market-- is anything opening up?
Over the last few years there has been an increased interest in acute renal failure now termed acute kidney injury (AKI) particularly in relation to its association with increased patient morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay. The term AKI encompasses all types of acute renal failure (ARF). The National Service Framework (NSF) for Renal Services has recommended that patients at risk of suffering from AKI should be identified promptly, with hospital services delivering high-quality, clinically appropriate care in partnership with specialised teams.
New, fairer funding arrangements, a review of the current settlement for older people and reforms to the benefits system are among the proposals put forward in a major new report on the social care system by The King's Fund today. Securing good care for more people updates the review of social care led by Sir Derek Wanless published by the Fund in 2006. The new report concludes that a revised version of the 'partnership model' proposed by the Wanless review is the fairest way of funding social care in the future...
For parents of children with multiple medical problems, keeping up with countless doctor's appointments, ongoing tests and a variety of medications can be overwhelming, especially for those in challenging socioeconomic situations.&nbsp;

As a result, families often wind up using the emergency room, the country's most expensive form of care delivery, to get help for their kids.
&nbsp;
But a growing concept in health care reform called the "medical home" offers parents a way to simplify, organize and coordinate the complexities of their medically fragile child's health care needs. The medical home is not a location but an approach to care coordination designed to provide a constant trusted source of care, typically by a general pediatrician.

* $100K per year for 2 years: The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium seeks proposals for correlative clinical studies in mantle cell lymphoma. Applications to this initiative must be an adjunct to a major MCL research project and work in the clinical setting or with primary MCL patient samples. Innovative research by definition may uncover new questions and new areas requiring investigation. Basic funding often does not allow for additional, correlative studies to explore these areas. The intention of the current request for proposals is to fund such adjunct studies to complement and synergize with ongoing MCL trials within the NCI Cancer Cooperative Groups and/or the LRF-funded clinical projects. The applications should clearly focus on MCL and have a hi...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), the causative agent of botulism, is acknowledged to be the most poisonous protein known. BoNT proteases disable synaptic vesicle exocytosis by cleaving their cytosolic SNARE (soluble NSF attachment protein receptor) substrates. BoNT is a modular nanomachine: an N-terminal Zn(2+)-metalloprotease, which cleaves the SNAREs; a central helical protein-conducting channel, which chaperones the protease across endosomes; and a C-terminal receptor-binding module, consisting of two subdomains that determine target specificity by binding to a ganglioside and a protein receptor on the cell surface and triggering endocytosis. For BoNT, functional complexity emerges from its modular design and the tight interplay between its component modules-a partners...

However, if you were better informed and knew that the main difference between introverts and extroverts is where they draw their energy—introverts from their solo time and extroverts from their social time—you’d look further.
In fact, each of these women views the world from a different perch—and in some ways from a different planet. But does that have to mean interplanetary warfare?

Reported benefits of home visits include improvement in maternal and child health and better parenting skills leading to positive maternal-child interaction. Despite CCH nurses' support for home visits factors such as costs, lack of resources and staffing issues have made home visits increasingly difficult. Twelve child health nurses participated in a focus group taped interview to explore how these nurses experienced home visits for new mothers in order to evaluate and improve home visits. Data were transcribed verbatim and content analysed. Three themes emerged from the nurses' experience of home visit...

Viral transmissibility and natural resistance to infection are key determinants in assessing the population impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, yet information on these parameters is scarce. Using data from 2 large-scale surveys on sexual behavior in the Netherlands (carried out in 2005-2006), the authors employed a Bayesian framework to fit a transmission model to the cross-sectional age-dependent prevalence of HPV DNA in cervical smears (data collected in 1992-2002), assuming that the prevaccine situation reflected an endemic equilibrium, and calculated type-specific estimates of transmissibility and infection-induced resistance. The posterior median transmission probability per heterosexua...

This article highlights the Farm Worker Family Health Program&rsquo;s (FWFHP) strategies for providing care to migrant farm workers residing within a unique social and cultural context. The care provided by health professions students from a variety of disciplines extends and augments the work of the local migrant farm worker clinic that is pushed beyond capacity during peak growing and harvest times. Nursing&rsquo;s social responsibility to care for underserved populations is a guiding principle of the FWFHP and shapes how the work is translated into action. The FWFHP is a community&mdash;academic partnership that began in the rural southeastern United States in 1993. Challenges facing migrant farm worker families include access to health care, language, health literacy, housing and sanit...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm <b><a href="http://www.medworm.com/rss/search.php?qu=%2Bswine+%2B%28influenza+flu%29&t=Swine+Flu&f=infectiousdiseases&r=Any&o=d" target ="_self">Swine Flu RSS news feed</a></b> - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.</p></div>

Seeking to significantly improve standards of animal welfare in the UK, in 2007 the Government introduced the Animal Welfare Act, empowering local authorities and their partners to intervene earlier in instances of animal neglect to prevent suffering through improved enforcement powers and stronger penalties for persistent offenders. Over the last three years, the Government has further strengthened the Act through the Animal Welfare Delivery Strategy and, most recently, the Code of Practice for pet owners.

As well as the negative effects of the economic downturn, specific problems s...

We examined racial/ethnic differences in reported seroadaptive and serodisclosure behaviors among the partnerships of MSM
recruited for a cross-sectional survey using time-location sampling (TLS) in San Francisco during 2007–2008. The sample (N&nbsp;=&nbsp;1,199) consisted of 12.2% Asian/Pacific Islander (API), 52.4% White, 6.8% Black, 20.2% Latino, and 8.5% of “other” race/ethnicity.
Pure serosorting was most common (about 20%) among HIV-negative men while seropositioning was most used (about 15%) by HIV-positive
men. Reported seroadaptive behaviors did not differ significantly across races/ethnicities among both HIV-negative and HIV-positive
men. However, HIV-positive Black and Latino men were significantly more likely to report no preventive, seroadaptive behavioral

of men engaged in exchange sex in the past 6&nbsp;months; 130 of 1,230 (10.6%) opposite-sex partnerships involved exchange. Women
of low socioeconomic status and those who inject drugs were more likely to engage in exchange sex. Men involved in exchange

Abstract&nbsp;&nbsp; The oncologic management of breast cancer has evolved over the past several decades from radical mastectomy to modern-day
preservation of chest and breast structures. The increased rate of mastectomies over recent years made breast reconstruction
an integral part of the breast cancer management. Plastic surgery now offers patients a wide variety of reconstruction options
from primary closure of the skin flaps to performance of microvascular and autologous tissue transplantation. Well-coordinated
partnerships between surgical oncologists, plastic surgeons, and patients address concerns of tumor control, cosmesis, and

Facet Biotech Corporation (NASDAQ: FACT) is a buyout saga that seemed as though it would never end in 2009. The company is now finally being acquired, but not by Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB). Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) announced last night that it entered into a definitive agreement for $27.00 per share in a cash buyout. The deal is valued at $722 million, but that includes about $272 million in cash and equivalents.
The net cost will be about $450 million. In late-2009, Facet turned down a second unsolicited offer from Biogen Idec of $17.50 a share after having rejected a lower offer before that.
Facet has discovery and development partnerships with Biogen Idec for MS, and it also has partnerships with PDL BioPharma (NASDAQ: PDLI) and Roche.
Facet shares are up 66% at $26.96 this...

People in Park Hill who thought they'd be shopping in a neighborhood Sunflower Farmers Market by now are still waiting. But rather than hang tight for Sunflower to find the perfect location, some neighborhood activists now are focused on a public-private partnership to bring shopping to an area considered a Denver &quot;food desert&quot; because of its lack of grocery stores.

The objective of this problem-detection study (PDS) was to investigate practitioners' (general practitioners', pharmacists' and CAM practitioners') views on their relationships and reaching concordant partnerships with consumers in the areas of both conventional medicine and CAM. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews guided the development of the PDS instrument. The questionnaire consisted of 36 items corresponding to seven thematic units deduced from the preliminary data. The differences in perceptions between the surveyed groups indicated that achieving concordance relies on mutual respect and communication and understanding of roles, responsibilities and limitations, and differences in opinion may be compromising the formation of partnerships. Potentially problematic issues identi...

[Clin Psychol Sci Prac 17: 72[ndash]81, 2010] Research on substance use disorders has produced a slew of disappointments in studies designed to confirm basic principles of the technology approach to treatment dissemination. These setbacks should inspire addictions science to pursue complementary paths of inquiry that focus on evidence-based practices delivered under naturalistic conditions. This will require larger accommodations to, and closer partnerships with, the indigenous cultures of everyday care. (Source: Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice)

There are countless reasons nearly every scientist should learn how to communicate effectively with the media, including increased understanding of critical research findings to attract or sustain funding and build new professional partnerships that will further propel forward research. But where do scientists begin? Bridging the Divide between Science and Journalism offers practical tips for any scientist looking to work with the media.Given the traditional and internet-based sources for medical research and healthcare-related news now available, it is imperative that scientists know how to communicate their latest findings through the appropriate channels. The credible media channels are managed by working journalists, so learning how to package vast, technical research in a form that is...

Although the &lsquo;patient provider partnership&rsquo; is now supposed to be an integral part of modern clinical care, an assumption is often made by clinicians that they know what patients want from health services. Sexual health care is no different. In order to investigate the accuracy of this supposition, a survey was undertaken in February 2009 of all staff members working in the Department of Reproductive and Sexual Health (doctors, nurses and administrative staff) in Enfield. They were asked to predict what their patients' priorities were when accessing sexual health services. The results showed that nurses were the most accurate at anticipating what patients most valued, by correctly predicting their top three priorities (confidentiality, speed of service and rapid test results). ...

Drug discovery and early clinical development is an international endeavor, conducted in partnership between commercial entities such as biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies and academic investigators. Although once considered quite disparate, early clinical trials requirements and conduct are largely harmonized between the European Union, Japan, and the United States, increasing the opportunities for productive commercial-academic collaborations.
