Nursing home administrators’ retention rate continues to be a serious problem. One factor potentially affecting administrator turnover that has received minimal research attention is the nursing home regulatory process. Using a random start systematic sample of 135 nursing home administrators, this study explores whether regulatory process perceptions, survey performance (number of deficiency citations on last survey), and demographic or facility variables are associated with job satisfaction and job seeking. Multivariate analyses revealed three main findings: (a) an overall positive perception of the survey process was a significant predictor of administrator job satisfaction and job seeking, (b) survey performance outcomes were not related to administrator job satisfaction, and (c)...

We examined the associations between work motivation and job satisfaction among Japanese nurses to improve their motivation. In Japan, relatively small and medium-sized private hospitals play a central role in the healthcare industry. In the present study, the subjects were nurses working in 23 small and medium-sized private hospitals that had 65 to 326 beds. Many nurses with their specialized nursing skills dedicate themselves to patient care. However, many of these nurses may not be interested in contributing to their hospitals. Nurses may have different opinions regarding dedication to patient care and contribution to their hospitals. Therefore, concerning work mo...

Indeed, it might seem that other work conditions are not as important in comparison. But research begs to differ.<!--break-->What makes a good job today? Which aspects are important to employees and where are they willing to make sacrifices? And, most importantly, how does organizational practice respond to these? These questions were tackled by a team of researchers from the RespectResearchGroup and the Rotterdam School of Management.
In the United States, we continue to argue the merits of making a bachelor's degree the requirement for entry into the practice of nursing. We lament the fact that there are few schools offering a perioperative nursing elective course. We fear a future with an ever-growing elderly population and a shrinking pool of nurses. Although we have made strides in salaries for nurses, we often believe pay does not reflect the responsibilities nurses have to manage, including using increasingly high-tech equipment and creating and maintaining a safe patient environment. We have successfully waged a very long battle for recognition in the legislative arena to achieve the mandate in 20 states that the person in the circulator role during surgery must be an RN. Nurses in other parts of the world have m...

Yet, those who generate most of their income through clinical work and teaching (ie, clinician scholars, clinician educators) find it increasingly difficult to volunteer their time and effort to these organizations compared with their historical colleagues. Those receiving salaries, fixed or based on billings/collections or work relative value units, have increasingly limited discretionary time off-site, and protected time on-site, for such endeavors. Travel issues (connecting, delayed and canceled flights, fewer travel options) add further to the cost of committee and meeting work. Employer-provided...

Program Director Satisfaction Revisited: An Alternate View

Your February 2009 issue included a landmark contribution from Hinchey and colleagues regarding the second administration of the internal medicine program director satisfaction survey. It is important to recognize that among the variables measured, the program director salary, balance of time on service, and number of support staff were important factors in the satisfaction of the cohort. I must confess that I too scanned Table 3 to view the spectrum of salary responses—that is only human nature. But I realized that maybe we missed the point here and that an alternate perspective needed to be shared. (Source: The American Journal of Medicine)

This study, like others we have reviewed recently, has left us wondering - what are the other benefits of successful marriage? The truth is, married couples are better off by almost any standard than people who are not married. The record will show that married couples have higher incomes individually, longer lives, better health, fewer alcohol-related problems, engage in less violence, and suffer from less poverty. So what about the benefits of a happy marriage for men beyond their lower risk of stroke? To begin with, happily married men live on average 9 years longer than single men! They are physically and emotionally healthier, and have much more stable employment histories. Successfully married men have more satisfying sexual relationships, get along better with their children, earn hi...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

I recently wrote about the myth of overnight success, and that switching careers often requires years of work to catch up on skill and salary level. This idea rings true for Shelley Irwin, a former physical therapist who went back to school at age 38 to pursue a career in radio. More than a decade later, she's an award-wining radio host at WGVU in Grand Rapids. She loves her job, but says the climb wasn't without sacrifice, from early morning wakeup calls to a steep pay cut to little room for relationships. We spoke over the phone a few weeks ago.How did you wind up in physical therapy as your first career? I wanted to be a successful career person, so to speak, so I chose a career in physical therapy. My parents were very focused on academia, and I didn't have a role model who said, oh th...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

If you are a young woman trying to pay for college or are unemployed you may consider becoming a lap dancer. I can hear some of you saying, "Are you kidding? They would study during the day and dance during the evening. But before you run to the nearest gentlemen's club for employment you should be aware that there are certain risks related to this job.
Conclusions There were multidimensional factors affecting RTW after occupational injury. Proper clinical treatment and rehabilitation,
as well as economic and social support to facilitate workers’ RTW would be the priorities upon intervention. Future studies
should be conducted in larger representative samples to confirm the findings and to develop a multidisciplinary intervention
strategy towards promoting RTW.

(University of Rochester) Vigorous two-party competition provides the best guarantee for meaningful, broad-based governance and modest salaries for lawmakers add a second protection against narrow-interest legislation, finds a national study spanning 120 years of state lawmaking. Although government critics often call for transparency, executive vetoes, and professional pay to curb pork barrel legislation and other bills that benefit only one lawmaker's constituents, the study finds that sharp competition and lower salaries, in fact, are better remedies.
Salary and Decision Making: Relationship Between Pay and Focus on Financial Profitability and Prosociality in an Organizational Context

This investigation examined the relationship between organizationally based financial incentives and a focus on profit vs. prosociality during decision making. Participants were 84 managers from a Fortune 200 corporation. Managers read a vignette containing a dilemma and freely generated issues that they considered important in resolving the dilemma. These responses were coded for their inclusion on 3 dimensions: financial profitability, well-being of nonpowerful stakeholders, and legal culpability. The results demonstrated that salary level predicted an increased focus on the dimension related to financial profitability and decreased focus on the dimensions of prosociality and legal concerns. Implications of these findings and future directions for research are discussed. (Source: Journal...

What does the fact that the stock market has fallen mean for families, for couple relationships?"Love conquers everything except poverty and toothache", Mae West said. We know that financial stress drags marriages down. Money and how to manage it is a sure source of conflict in many couple relationships - and this was clear even before the last market melt down. A 2006 study in Money magazine found that 15% of couples fought about money several times a month. Even in strong marriages, stressors such as job losses, salary cuts or working longer hours can trigger angry outbursts of frustration or numbed out silences that quickly take a marriage into the danger zone. Do we even have time for building a resilient marriage anymore? As financial and career pressures increase, giving time and att...

Neurotic Personalities Earn Lower Salaries

Neurotics have one more thing to worry about - they may earn less money than their less neurotic peers. According to my current line of research where I examined the hypothesis that personality affects the motivation, work drive and salary of workers, Neuroticism had significant negative direct effects on salary (B = -.26, p < .05). This effect implies an inverse relationship between the variables; more neurotic participants earned smaller salaries (Mauro, in progress). Personality can be examined in a number of ways. In this blog I tend to focus on pathological personality - disordered personality that is diagnosed because it is generally understood to be problematic for individuals in society. Another way of looking at personality is to examine the differences in personality dime...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

We present the first empirical investigation of why men are assumed to earn higher salaries than women (the salary estimation effect). Although this phenomenon is typically attributed to conscious consideration of the national wage gap (i.e., real inequities in salary), we hypothesize instead that it reflects differential, automatic economic valuing of men and women. In the four studies described here, we demonstrate that the salary estimation effect is present in both student and community samples, is not explained by participants' awareness of real gender inequities in pay, and appears in descriptive tasks (i.e., estimating what men and women do earn; Studies 1 and 2) as well as in a prescriptive task (i.e., determining what men and women should earn; Study 3). Further, the salary estima...

What is SURF?Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships program introduces students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech and JPL. Students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity. SURF is modeled on the grant-seeking process: * Students collaborate with potential mentors to define and develop a project. * Applicants write research proposals for their projects * A faculty committee reviews the proposals and recommends awards * Students carry out the work over a 10-week period in the summer, mid-June to late August * At the conclusion of the program, they submit a technical paper and give an oral prese...

Looking just at the salaries and bonuses of Fortune 500 CEOs, financial executives, top university presidents, and even some directors of the larger nonprofit organizations, you would think that these leaders are performing at high levels - at least levels high enough to justify their huge compensation. Unfortunately, that's not often the case. Many executives are paid huge salaries and severance compensation even when their performance is dismal (and brief). As we learned last week, about half of these leaders will be out of the job in three years. So if we are not rewarding leaders for their performance, what are we rewarding them for? They often receive their enormous compensation merely because they made it to the top. CEO salaries have been on a meteoric rise for decades, and they are ...

(NaturalNews) When I saw The Lancet's recent retraction of Dr. Wakefield's famous paper linking vaccines to autism, I couldn't help thinking back to 1989 when Fleischmann and Pons were widely attacked and discredit over their demonstration of cold fusion technology. These two brilliant physicists had accomplished the seemingly impossible: They had caused fusion to take place at low temperatures, producing both excess heat energy as well as the helium artifacts proving that low-energy nuclear reactions had taken place. The conventional physics community went berserk. They attacked Fleischmann and Pons relentlessly, attempting to destroy their character and any scientific credibility they might have held. They paraded a gang of "hot fusion" scientists through the mainstream media, telling eve...

We analyse the determinants of annual net income and wages (net income/hours) of general practitioners (GPs) using data for 2271 GPs in England recorded during Autumn 2008. The average GP had an annual net income of £97 500 and worked 43 h per week. The mean wage was £51 per h. Net income and wages depended on gender, experience, list size, partnership size, whether or not the GP worked in a dispensing practice, whether they were salaried of self-employed, whether they worked in a practice with a nationally or locally negotiated contract, and the characteristics of the local population (proportion from ethnic minorities, rurality, and income deprivation). The findings have implications for pay discrimination by GP gender and ethnicity, GP preferences for partnership size, incentives for ...

The next man on the moon will be ChineseFew people who remember the 1960s can fail to have been inspired by the drama and excitement of the space missions, which pitted the United States against the Soviet Union in a race to land a man on the moon. Today there is still a massively competitive space race; but yesterday the Barack Obama administration cancelled its Constellation programme, which had aimed to put astronauts back on the moon. With the US effectively out of the race to the moon, the field is now clear for India, China and Japan. The 1960s space race was about military prowess. This time it's about economic and technical leadership, but in terms of our future prosperity it is just as significant....

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Thirty-nine of 128 (30.5%) coaches who were surveyed responded, representing 24 of the states of the United States. This survey examines the coaches' personal background information, compensation, job responsibilities, schools, facilities, the advantages and disadvantages of their positions, things they would like to change, and unique aspects of their program. The coaches averaged 6.74 and 14.89 years in their present positions and profession, respectively. All but one coach was certified, with 83% of the survey respondents certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. More than half of the coaches (54%) had master's degrees.
Conclusions: The estimated loss of $ AU5.9 billion in employee productivity due to mental health problems is substantially higher than previous estimates. This finding is especially pertinent given the global economic crisis, when psychological distress among employees is likely to be increasing. Effective treatment for mental health problems yields substantial increases in employee productivity and would be a sound economic investment for employers.

Jeff walked out of his supervisor's office feeling good—mostly. He had just received his evaluation after a year on the job. Jeff is a nurse leader who holds a significant position in his health system, and he is very motivated to do well at work. He felt good because his review was very positive; on nearly every question with quantifiable measures, his manager said he exceeded expectations. She awarded him the maximum salary increase, even though the organization was facing difficult financial challenges. His manager's less formal comments were largely positive, too. She and the rest of nursing leadership realized the difficulty of Jeff's job, and he received high marks for his many achievements after just 1 year. (Source: Nurse Leader)

There is big body of research on theft by employees, as it costs employers billions of dollars, is something that is possible to measure with some accuracy, and -- as a diverse body of qualitative and quantitative research shows -- often happens for complex reasons. In some cases, studies have shown that both supervisors and employees will reach quite explicit agreements that stealing is a useful way to make-up for low wages. In other cases, supervisors will makes subtle deals with employees that, if they work overtime or do something else extra, they can steal something (or steal more). And, in research on dock workers in the UK, the amount and type of things that people could steal was carefully regulated by the peer culture. If you stole nothing, you were seen as dangerous because you w...

Estimating the salaries of professional athletes has received a substantial amount of attention both in the press and in academic journals. A statistical technique that can be used to obtain an estimate of a player's salary with a given set of performance characteristics is the classical least squares regression analysis. This technique does not work well, however, if the data upon which the model is based contain outliers or are not normally distributed. In this paper we focus our attention on the salaries of American League baseball players in 2007 and demonstrate the usefulness of an alternative estimation approach - that of quantile regression analysis. Our results indicate that ordinary least squares regression overestimates the salaries of poor players, and underestimates the salarie...

The short answer is: more than chemists. Yesterday I put up some numbers for average starting salaries for chemists and chemist salaries based on years of experience (or education). Today I added the corresponding numbers for chemical engineers. Keep in mind, these are averages so if you are a chemist or chemical engineer (or are thinking about becoming one), your salary may be somewhat different. The average chemical engineer, fresh out of college, makes about $20,000 a year more than the average graduate in chemistry. Something to think about...How Much Do Chemical Engineers Make? originally appeared on About.com Chemistry on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 at 16:17:03.Permalink | Comment | Email this (Source: About.com Chemistry)

Another big factor is how many years of experience the chemist has.
The costs of health care in the United States account for 16% of gross domestic product and are rising at 6.7% per year, exceeding the rate of rise in wages or inflation. In parallel, the costs associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) care rose by 6% in 2007 to $24 billion (). This expenditure constitutes 5.8% of the overall Medicare budget, including Part D, but accounts for less than 1% of Medicare beneficiaries. Facing an increasing prevalence of ESRD in the United States and therefore increased costs, even in the setting of relatively stable per patient costs, the Medicare ESRD program is now the target of legislative efforts to curb expenditures while maintaining quality and availability. This editorial will outline economic aspects of dialysis care in the United States, includi...

OA is the most common form of arthritis, affecting nearly 27 million Americans or 12.1% of the adult population of the United States, as per Laurence et al.
Maryland SunTrust executive sees ‘a new norm’ for banking

Like many of the nation’s large banks, SunTrust Banks Inc. had a rough 2009, losing $1.3 billion in the third quarter alone. The Atlanta-based bank accepted a $4.9 billion infusion from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, and as part of that deal agreed to freeze the salaries and bonuses of virtually all its top executives. SunTrust’s Greater Washington/Maryland CEO, Scott Wilfong, who has been in the banking business for 38 years, has seen the bulls and the bears on the run before. He sees glimmers of recovery but says the days of excess are over. Before joining a SunTrust predecessor in 1997, Wilfong, a Baltimore native, worked as senior vice president at First National Bank of Maryland. He began his banking career with Equitable Trust Co. in 1972. The purpose of this study was to carry out a broad survey and analysis of relevant research articles about piece rate wages and their effects on health and safety that were published internationally until the fall of 2008. The aim was to summarize and describe the state of the art of the research in this field and if possible draw conclusions from the accumulated research results. A total of 75 research articles were examined extensively and 31 of these were found relevant and had sufficient quality to serve the purpose of this study. The findings of these relevant articles are summarized and analyzed in the survey. Since the late 1980s, there has been a change of research focus regarding piece rates and their effects on health and safety. More ...

When the recession first hit, we heard that there were certain "safe" career fields like health care, higher education, etc. But as the recession drones on, so-called safe industries are belt-tightening and finding themselves subject to the same economics stresses facing other industries. Even the practice of law.The public perception about legal careers is generally inaccurate. People assume that a law degree guarantees a permanent job, a great income and an exciting, high-powered life fighting for justice. Not to mention a great career for those who like to argue. And the portrayal of lawyers in the media tends to support that image. When warned about this, college students planning to attend law school often say, "well I know the law isn't exactly like "Law & Order," but...." - and ...
