A strategic plan is being developed for a 10-year, national effort to digitize and mobilize images and data associated with biological research collections. The plan aims to create a publicly available, comprehensive collections resource that will increase access to biological collections across the country. The plan was drafted by workshop participants at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in February 2010.

The strategic plan is seen as “a grand challenge” and will be undertaken “as a unified mission involving a coordinated funding program and well designed strategy for execution.” The plan calls for the development of cyberinfrastructure “to promote efficient and standard capture and mobilization of these data to make the national biological collect...

To characterize how the use of behavioral contracts may serve to focus individuals' intentions to grow as leaders.Between 2007 and 2008, participants of the Society of Hospital Medicine Leadership Academy courses completed behavioral contracts to identify 4 action plans they wanted to implement based on things learned at the Academy. Contracts were independently coded by 2 investigators and compared for agreement. Content analysis identified several major themes that relate to professional growth as leaders. Follow-up surveys assessed fulfillment of personal goals. The majority of respondents were male (84; 70.0%), and most were hospitalist leaders (76; 63.3%). Their median time practicing as hospitalists was 4 years, 14 (11.7%) were Assistant Professors, and 80 (66.7%) were in private prac...

This study examines the interactive role of planning and self-efficacy in the context of dietary changes. A longitudinal sample of 411 employees was surveyed twice in terms of their fruit and vegetable consumption over a four-week interval. Intentions, planning, and fruit and vegetable consumption were specified as a mediator chain with self-efficacy as a moderator at two stages of the putative change process. Baseline behavior served as a covariate in the model. Intentions were translated into dietary behavior by planning. Self-efficacy moderated this mediation at the second stage, reflected by a planning x self-efficacy interaction on fruit and vegetable consumption. The strength of the mediated effect increased along with levels of self-efficacy. Individuals with very low self-efficacy ...

Mission and vision statements: What are they, and why are they important for an organization such as INACSL? A mission statement outlines the purpose of the organization, whereas a vision statement describes what the organization wants to become. The mission statement is the here and now; the vision statement is the future. Mission and vision statements guide the organization in its decision making and help it to define a strategic plan. The literature recommends a review of these guiding statements at least every 5 years. (Source: Clinical Simulation in Nursing)

In reaching the goal for standardized, quality care, a not-for-profit healthcare system consisting of seven institutional entities is transforming nursing practice guidelines, patient care workflow, and patient documents into electronic, online, real-time modalities for use across departments and all healthcare delivery entities of the system. Organizational structure and a strategic plan were developed for the 2-year Clinical Transformation Project. The Siemens Patient Care Document System was adopted and adapted to the hospitals' documentation and information needs. Two fast-track sessions of more than 100 nurses and representatives from other health disciplines were held to standardize assessments, histories, care protocols, and i...

Increasing regulatory mandates, heightened concerns about compliance, accountability, and liability, as well as a movement toward organizational integration are prompting assessment and transformation in education and training programs at academic health centers, particularly with regard to clinical research compliance. Whereas education and training have become a major link between all research and compliance functions, the infrastructure to support and sustain these activities has not been examined in any systematic, comprehensive fashion, leaving many critical interrelated issues unaddressed. Through a series of informal interviews in late 2008 with chief compliance officers and other senior leadership at 10 academic health centers, the authors studied the organization, management, and ...

A comprehensive system for translating basic biomedical research into useful and effectively implemented clinical diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic practices is essential to the nation's health. The state of clinical and translational research (CTR) in the United States, however, has been characterized as fragmented, slow, expensive, and poorly coordinated. As part of its Roadmap Initiative, the National Institutes of Health instituted the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), a sweeping and ambitious program designed to transform the conduct of biomedical research in the United States by speeding the translation of scientific discoveries into useful therapies and then developing methods to ensure that those therapies reach the patients who need them the most.
The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing so rapidly that it has created an urgency for medical professionals at the primary care levels—including general practice dietitians—to screen and treat it before the disease can progress to end stage renal disease (ESRD). Approximately 16.8% of the US population, or about 23 million people aged 20 or older, today are estimated to have laboratory evidence of CKD, and that figure is projected to grow through 2010 (). CKD places an enormous burden on medical providers. In 2006, costs for Medicare patients with CKD exceeded $49 billion, nearly a quarter of all general Medicare costs (). Yet, despite its severity and widespread prevalence (), CKD treatment has lagged behind current evidence-based treatment guidelines for testing f...

A lack of management capacity has been identified as the key stumbling block to attaining the goals of health for all in South Africa. As part of the overall management development process, this research aims to identify the skills that are important for health services management and to evaluate managers' self-assessed proficiency in each of these skills. We also examined the impact of past training on perceived competency levels. A cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among 404 hospital managers in the South African public and private sectors. Respondents were asked to rate the level of importance that each proposed competency had in their job and to indicate their proficiency in each skill. Both public and private sector managers rated competencie...

Area: News
Following the publication of 'Healthcare for London: A Framework for Action' in July 2007, led by Lord Darzi, an NHS leadership event was held in April 2009 to give fresh energy to Darzi's vision for NHS London. Commissioners of services in London PCTs and NHS London were asked to think up ways of accelerating the delivery of healthcare for London. It was agreed to produce an integrated strategic plan setting out the 3 to 5 year implementation path. This document is a first stage report of that plan, including priorities for delivery in 2010/11. (Source: NeLM - News)

The Food and Drug Administration has named a new permanent head of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, who has been acting director since early September, will now direct the center. He replaces Dr. Daniel Schultz, who resigned last year after critics claimed he was too cozy with medical device makers. In a statement, the head of the device industry trade group Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) applauded Dr. Shuren's appointment and said that he has already shown effective leadership skills. “His more than 10 years experience at FDA, in various high-level policy and planning positions within the commissioner's office, will serve him well as he takes control of an organization that oversees such a wide range of life-saving and life-enhancing...

I recently spoke to a group of young EMS managers and asked them what was emphasized in their degree and management classes to prepare them to take on organizational and operational challenges. They quickly rattled off a list of courses and topics, such as budget development and management principles, strategic planning and development, deployment strategies, statistics and personnel administration.
In the workplace, the words "strategic plan" tend to either energize people or drain them, depending on their past experience with the discipline. As an organizational development consultant, I often speak with workplace leaders about the value of having a simple strategic plan that aligns people and processes to achieve shared goals.Sounds like common sense, right? Doesn't every organization have one? No, and it got me thinking about why some companies and nonprofits do not have one.I think misperceptions about what is involved in creating a practical and effective strategic plan can create false barriers to undertaking the process. Some of those misperceptions may be rooted in business practices that were popular many years ago. In the 70's and 80's, during the peak of the TQM (total qual...

In 2009, every section of the American Academy of Neurology was to submit a strategic plan, which specifically included legislative issues faced by the members of that section. This is the first of several articles highlighting the challenges facing AAN sections. Behavioral neurology has identified several areas of advocacy interest, but at the heart of this discussion lies the issue faced by the entire field of neurology: preservation of the ability to provide cognitive services to our patients.
As we welcome the New Year and a new decade, I'm mindful that we have just ended NCCAM's 10th anniversary. For us, it has been a decade of growth, progress, and promise. As we begin this new decade, we are developing our third strategic plan, which will provide guidance for our future scientific direction, priority setting, and advancement of the organization. We have gained invaluable knowledge from our first decade, which is providing the strong base from which we will continue to build. I look forward to the future as we continue our 2010 strategic planning process and beyond as we work to fulfill the scientific mission of NCCAM. (Source: NCCAM Featured Content)

Before the end of 2009, I sat down with my staff to develop our strategic plans for the upcoming year. For 2010, I threw something new at them. As part of our strategic planning every year, we do a SWOT analysis (for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). This approach allows us to formulate our strategic plans for the upcoming years in the Memphis Fire Department. (Source: JEMS: Journal of Emergency Medical Services)

Throughout the last decade, the leadership of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) has refined the Academy's mission and developed a series of specific, strategic plans to accomplish that mission. The mission of the AAN is to serve the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. Our stated vision is to transform health and health care policy and practice through nursing knowledge. At the AAN's November 2009 Annual Meeting, outgoing President Pamela Mitchell provided a comprehensive report of the organization's strategic accomplishments as guided by the strategic plan that is coming to a close.
A Chinese court recently sentenced six people to death for exporting fake drugs to Nigeria. The Director-General of the National Agency For Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, speaking at a five-day Strategic Planning Retreat for his staff in Kaduna, praised China for this tough stance, and canvassed for similar stiff sentences for all drug peddlers in Nigeria. The issue of fake drugs and those who peddle them is a long-standing one in Nigeria. (Source: AllAfrica News: Health and Medicine)

The Kenyan government should ensure that strong human rights protections are included in plans for expanded home-based HIV counseling and testing, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to the public health minister. Earlier in 2009, Kenya started testing people for HIV in their own homes, and aims to test more than four million Kenyans - adults and children - in 2010, according to the new Kenya National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan.
Officials updating the National Vaccine Plan should prioritize efforts to eliminate financial barriers to immunization, tackle unmet vaccine needs, and boost funding for safety research and communications, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. An effective strategic plan for immunization is vital given the important role of vaccines in protecting Americans’ health and complexity of the nation's immunization system, which involves multiple agencies and stakeholders.
Like several states in the Southeast, Alabama is in the nascent stages of an increase in the population of foreign-born individuals for whom English is a second language. These individuals are also culturally different from the traditional southern population. Given the impact of culture and language on a person's service utilization, the introduction of new cultures may pose significant challenges for Alabama's health care providers if they are not prepared. The purpose of this project is to examine the organizational characteristics associated with the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services by Alabama hospitals. The data for the project come from a survey of all medical/surgical hospitals (N = 101). Fifty-nine surveys were returned, giving us a 58% response rate....

This article reviews the context of adaptation rules and current policy development in East Asian region. The UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol have established specific rules for countries to develop national or regional adaptation policies and measurements. The current development of the ASEAN Strategic Plan on food security is inspiring, but the commitments to implementation by its members remain an issue of concern. We suggest that the UNFCCC enhances co-operation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other international organizations to further develop methodologies and technologies for all parties. Our findings suggest that agriculture is one of the most vulnerable sectors in terms of risks associated with climate change and distinct programmatic initiatives are necessary. It'...

The concept of recentering the Deaf community in interpreter education stems from the recent discussion of program evolution away from stakeholders and into academia highlighted by Monikowski and Peterson (2005). The University of North Florida, in the initial stages of developing a B.S. degree and M.Ed. concentration in ASL/English Interpreting, responded by developing stand-alone courses in service-learning, with hopes of prioritizing the needs of the Deaf community in curriculum development. The program was implemented in fall 2007, and the first cohort of students completed its second course in service-learning in fall 2008. Elements of the new program that indicate its progress toward recentering include an overview of service-learning as pedagogy in ac...

Conference Overview

The executive and senior management in further education colleges are currently under external and internal pressure to ensure that higher education and higher level skills training are prioritised as part of their strategic planning.

The challenges include the uncertainty of collaborative partnerships, demand-led funding arrangements, increasing commercial income and reacting to a rapidly evolving environment where market potential may be lower than the expectations of policy makers.

This conference brings together expertise and experience to assist colleges in developing strategies to manage risk through informed choice.

Conference Aims

Recognizing the important practice of nurses is a vital part of creating a healthful practice/work environment. It is also a key initiative of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) 2010–2012 Strategic Plan. One of the objectives under this initiative is to serve as an industry leader in providing resources to create and promote positive, safe and healthful practice environments. To achieve this objective, AONE joined forces with The DAISY Foundation in 2008 to recognize the work of extraordinary nurses around the country. These are the nurses who, in addition to providing skillful, compassionate care for their patients, also strive to create the best positive, safe and healthful practice environments.
What did Peter Drucker, the Father of Modern Management, have to say about leadership? Because Drucker believed that management was itself an important and noble endeavor, he did not, throughout most of his career, focus much on leadership. Having fled Nazi Germany soon after Hitler's rise to power, Peter Drucker's view of leaders, particularly charismatic leaders, was not particularly positive. For Drucker, effective management, not leadership, was the key to success.Yet, by the end of his life, Drucker acknowledged that leadership was important. I recall that many years ago when Peter came to one of our undergraduate leadership courses, the students asked him his definition of leadership. He said that he did not want to talk about leadership, but about management. A bold student asked, "...

School of Medicine leaders gathered at the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Southern Management Campus Center on November 17, 2009 for a day-long brainstorming summit.
Autism Speaks is encouraged by the decision of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) to include vaccine research studies in the objectives of the updated Strategic Plan for Autism Research. The new language, approved unanimously, calls for studies to determine if there are sub-populations that are more susceptible to environmental exposures such as immune challenges related to naturally occurring infections, vaccines or underlying immune problems. Nursing Inquiry 2009; 16: 287[ndash]296User participation when using milieu therapy in a psychiatric hospital in Norway: a mission impossible? In the past decade, the Norwegian government has emphasized user participation as an important goal in the care of mentally ill patients, through governmental strategic plans. Milieu therapy is a therapeutic tool to ensure user participation and re-socialization. Based on an ethnographic study in a long-term psychiatric ward in a psychiatric hospital, we identified how staff tried to implement user particip...

    Authors: Silva A, Mahamithawa A, Piyasena C
Most improvements gained during the past two decades in maternal and child nutrition can be attributed to the successful, countrywide maternal and child health programme of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. Other supporting programmes to combat deficiencies of individual micronutrients have also contributed significantly. As the latest Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data have shown regional disparities in nutrition status, it indicates that more effort is needed to improve nutrition status of marginalized populations. A National Nutrition Policy and strategic plan of Sri Lanka is being formulated and new evidence based nutrition ...

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is an increasing global challenge, especially in low-income countries. Most guidelines for the management of advanced-stage NSCLC have limited effect in countries with resource constraints. Following a systematic literature search, we present an overview of the management of advanced-stage NSCLC in the first-line setting, discuss resources required for systemic therapy, and provide treatment recommendations stratified to four resources levels. Treatment guidelines appropriate for different resource levels offer a realistic approach to management of advanced-stage NSCLC, by recognising the limitations of a particular health-care system. Although there are many barriers to cancer control in low-resource countries, these can be overcome by using measures tha...

This article presents the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) planning methodology used by the Department of
Defense’s (DOD) Joint Imaging Technology Project Office (JITPO). This methodology evaluates four areas of PACS planning and
implementation: strategic planning, clinical scenario planning, installation planning, and implementation planning. The first
task is to develop a PACS team, from the local facility, that will execute the program. A written PACS plan is developed by
the JITPO, with active input and final say from the site’s PACS team. This plan includes the PACS goals and objectives, clinical
requirements, facility requirements, and the status of the implementation. This methodology, when applied fully at a military
clinical site, has resulted in the si...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Experience gained from involvement in a number of emergency response activities since September 2001 in Texas indicated that the likely roles of statewide medical reserve corps units typically included aspects such as crowd control, registration and tracking, and information management. The need for training specifically focused on these likely roles became apparent. A novel field training exercise was developed that specifically focused on these likely roles. The exercise centered on a scenario involving the surreptitious placement of radioactivity in high traffic areas across the country, resulting in the contamination of large numbers of individuals. Because the source of the contamination was unknown, surge capacity contamination ...

October 16, 2009UCSF researcher Deanna Kroetz, PhD, discusses the impact of genetic differences on how an individual responds to drugs in a KQED Quest radio interview that aired September 14, 2009. Fellow members of the interview panel were UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, and UCSF breast cancer surgeon Laura Esserman, MD, MBA.

Pharmacogenomics is a major research focus in Kroetz's home Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, which is a joint department between the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. The goal is safer, more effective therapies for populations and individuals. Making the promise of pharmacogenomics a reality for patients is a major strategic goal of the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

The consequences of pandemic influenza for vulnerable populations will depend partly on the effectiveness of health risk communications. Strategic planning should fully consider how life circumstances, cultural values, and perspectives on risk influence behavior during a pandemic. We summarize recent scientific evidence on communication challenges and examine how sociocultural, economic, psychological, and health factors can jeopardize or facilitate public health interventions that require a cooperative public. If ignored, current communication gaps for vulnerable populations could result in unequal protection across society during an influenza pandemic. We offer insights on communication preparedness gleaned from scientific studies and the deliberations of...

During the early stages of an influenza pandemic, a pandemic vaccine likely will not be available. Therefore, interventions to mitigate pandemic influenza transmission in communities will be an important component of the response to a pandemic. Public-housing residents, single-parent families, and low-income populations may have difficulty complying with community-wide interventions. To enable compliance with community interventions, stakeholders recommended the following: (1) community mobilization and partnerships, (2) culturally specific emergency communications planning, (3) culturally specific education and training programs, (4) evidence-based measurement and evaluation efforts, (5) strategic plann...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Although biomedical physicists provide educational services to the healthcare professions in the majority of universities in Europe, their precise role with respect to the education of the healthcare professions has not been studied systematically. To address this issue we are conducting a research project to produce a strategic development model for the role using the well-established SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) methodology. SWOT based strategic planning is a two-step process: one first carries out a SWOT position audit and then uses the identified SWOT themes to construct the strategic develo...

You have been leading for most of your life. You began leading yourself by setting goals, staying on task, and learning self-discipline. As you matured you became more proficient at strategic planning, recruiting talent, and creating the right culture. You constructed from these experiences your own implicit leadership theory, a way of making sense of leadership, your own mental model of what leadership is about and how it works . If you are like most people, a dominant component of your mental model thinks of leadership as being about a person in charge who leads “out there” by wielding power, providing answers, and standing apart . One of the corollaries of this thinking is that if the leader pulls the right strategic levers, turns the right operational dials, and meshes the right pr...

Abstract: The Nursing and Midwifery Council () removed standard entry criteria for nursing programmes and asked Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to consider the literacy and numeracy skills of prospective students. This triggered admissions staff within a Faculty of Health to consider ways of attracting people with the right skills but not the qualifications to prove it. It is important to encourage a wide range of people into nursing to meet the demands of strategic plans and policy, as well as to ensure the nursing profession reflects the diverse client groups it serves. Removing standard entry criteria and the widening participation agenda gave an ideal opportunity to try something new.A course entitled ‘Portfolio of Evidence for Entry to Level 1 Study’ was developed within the ...

One of the greatest challenges facing post-apartheid South Africa is the control of the concomitant HIV and tuberculosis epidemics. HIV continues to spread relentlessly, and tuberculosis has been declared a national emergency. In 2007, South Africa, with 0·7% of the world's population, had 17% of the global burden of HIV infection, and one of the world's worst tuberculosis epidemics, compounded by rising drug resistance and HIV co-infection. Until recently, the South African Government's response to these diseases has been marked by denial, lack of political will, and poor implementation of policies and programmes. Nonetheless, there have been notable achievements in disease management, including substantial improvements in access to condoms, expansion of tuberculosis control efforts, and...

When ALA adopted its strategic plan in 2008, one important initiative was to advance the science and education of laboratory automation through the continued development of our organization's global identity, reach, and influence. Since then, the ALA Board of Directors and staff have worked to expand existing and cultivate new strategic relationships with targeted organizations and thought leaders. Progress has been impressive and productive and, as planned and hoped, is encouraging the amalgamation of ALA among key industries, academia, government, and continents.
This article proposes a framework for faculty development in continuing interprofessional education (CIPE) and collaborative practice. The framework is built on best practices in faculty development and CIPE. It was informed by local experience in the development, delivery, and evaluation of a faculty development program to promote capacity for dissemination of concepts relating to interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in health care environments. Interprofessional education has been demonstrated in clinical contexts to enhance interprofessional collaboration, patient care, and health outcomes. With curriculum design, teaching methods, and educational strategies in faculty development, it is possible to enhance the impact of IPE in clinical contexts.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is seeking public input for the development of its Next Generation Strategic Plan, a blueprint for how NOAA will meet the needs of the nation and the world in the coming decades. In a short survey, stakeholders are asked to provide thoughts and insights on the trends that will shape NOAA’s future, the challenges and opportunities NOAA will face, and what NOAA should strive to accomplish. NOAA employees, stakeholders, and partners in academia, government, private industry and nonprofit organizations are welcome to participate. To take the survey, go to www.noaa.gov/ngsp by 11 September 2009. (Source: Public Policy Reports)

The HIV-epidemic is one of the greatest public health crises to face South Africa. A health care response to the treatment needs of HIV-positive people is a prime example of the desirability of an economic, rational approach to resource allocation in the face of scarcity. Despite this, almost no input based on economic analysis is currently used in national strategic planning. While cost-utility analysis is theoretically able to establish technical efficiency, in practice this is accomplished by comparing an intervention's ICER to a threshold level representing society's maximum willingness to pay to avoid death and improve health-related quality of life. Such an approach has been criticised for a number of reasons, including that it is inconsistent with a fixed budget for health care and t...

The ASE believes in strategic planning. Each March, our ASE leadership and staff gather to reevaluate and prioritize the goals of our organization. Similarly, the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease (PCHD) Council Board of the ASE holds a short retreat each year at our Annual Scientific Sessions to discuss plans for the future. At our most recent retreat, current and outgoing members of the PCHD Council Board and the PCHD Council members of the ASE Board of Directors, with the assistance of our staff representative, Adrienne Coats, agreed upon the following priorities: (Source: Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography)

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

In the little more than a year that has passed since AORN and the American Nurses Association (ANA) agreed to join forces in an individual affiliate partnership, our country has seen the promise of long-awaited health care reform finally begin to take shape. We also have seen the challenge of a worsening global economy put our professionalism to the test by stretching our already understaffed workforce to the maximum. Nurses are now at the forefront of strategic planning that will change the way our nation approaches both issues. The strategic alliance we have formed—and its resulting strength in numbers—has enabled nurses to become major players in the debates currently shaping our nation's health care and economic strategies.
Summary: The British National Health Service is a closed managed care system. This single health care system for the United Kingdom is funded by the government and paid for by general taxation. All UK citizens are registered with primary care physicians who control access to secondary care services. As a managed care system it should be able to offer integrated care across the whole patient pathway. In reality there are professional, organizational, and institutional barriers to coordination and delivery of care in the NHS. Historically, the United Kingdom has been among the lowest health care spenders of organizations for economic cooperation in developed countries, in absolute terms as well as proportion of the gross domestic product. However, since a Government pledge to place quality a...

Objective evidence-based national surveys serve as a first step in identifying suitable point-of-care device designs, effective test clusters, and environmental operating conditions. Preliminary survey results show the need for point-of-care testing (POCT) devices using test clusters that specifically detect pathogens found in disaster scenarios. Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in southeast Asia, and the current influenza pandemic (H1N1, “swine flu”) vividly illustrate lack of national and global preparedness. Gap analysis of current POCT devices versus survey results reveals how POCT needs can be fulfilled. Future thinking will help avoid the worst consequences of disasters on the horizon, such as extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis and pandemic influenzas. A global effort must be ...

In addition to its enormous impacts on an individual's quality of life, obesity is a daunting health problem in the world today and the increasing rate of obesity is now causing a severe burden on health care systems. Fortunately, the normalization or reduction of increased body fat reverses the obesity-associated morbidities, such as hypertension, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver diseases. However, the modification of lifestyle in a case of established clinical obesity is very difficult to achieve. Recent breakthroughs in relation to the molecular mechanism regulating body weight and energy metabolism give us hopes for the development of anti-obesity drugs. Even with the high social demand for an effective treatment f...

We present allele and haplotype frequencies derived from a data set of 8,862 German stem cell donors who were typed at high resolution for the HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, and HLA-DRB1 genes upon registration. Calculated haplotype frequencies were used to estimate the probability p to find matching donors subject to donor registry size n. The impact of various matching standards on p(n) was analyzed. When high-resolution matching for HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, and HLA-DRB1 is required, p(1,000,000) is 0.678. The corresponding value for n=7,000,000 is 0.859. In a scenario with low-resolution matching and no consideration of HLA-C, p(1,000,000) is 0.863 and thus larger than p(7,000,000) in the scenario with stricter matching requirements. As recent findings support the importance of high-resolution matchi...
