Did you know that lifestyle changes are more powerful than medications? In addition, diabetes is a disease that is not made up of just one symptom (high blood sugar). We often deal with high triglycerides, high blood pressure, high insulin levels, and other conditions.

Each symptom or associated condition of diabetes could be treated with different medications, but lifestyle changes could bring sweeping changes across the board. Granted, lifestyle changes may not be enough for everyone. However, it doesn't hurt to give them a try.

People With Type 2 Diabetes Lazy and Undisciplined?

As a person with type 2 diabetes, I am well aware of the stereotypes and erroneous beliefs about my disease:

I must have type 2 diabetes because I brought it upon myself eating chips 24/7 on the couch while watching TV.
I must not diet or exercise as much as I say I do, because otherwise I would be a waif.
I should "just" be able to give up all carbs and sweets.
I should "just" be able to exist on four lettuce leaves a day and a cherry tomato.

Even some friends with type 1 diabetes get very insulted for being mistaken as someone with type 2 diabetes, "the one caused by poor lifestyle."

The root cause of diabetes is not yet known. Many people are quick to say extra weight is the cause. However, there are many more fat people in the world without diabetes than ...

Our days are full of little choices that can make a big difference. Over time those decisions can add up with either positive or negative results.

Living in Tucson, Arizona and being part of a family that has been here for hundreds of years, Mexican food all around me is just a given. I have to make the "corn or flour" tortillas decision at least once a week.

My friends and family from the northern states of Mexico are flour tortilla fans and traditional recipes have morphed to include more cheddar cheese and frying. The ones from central Mexico eat mostly corn and prepare food in more traditional ways. At least in my little world, it seems the people from central Mexico who eat more traditionally enjoy better overall health.

I have compared corn tortillas versus flour...

So I answered my own question and figured it out.

Eating less animal fat and cholesterol might decrease a woman's risk for gestational diabetes in pregnancy. Eat too much, and the risk almost doubles. This is according to a recent study from the National Institutes of Health and Harvard University.

The increased risk of gestational diabetes due to a diet high in these fats was not lowered by other factors such as exercise which have been found to reduce risk. Women whose total fat or other fat consumption was high (not animal fat or cholesterol) did not have increased risk.

This has been the largest study conducted on pre-pregnancy diet and it's effects on gestational diabetes. Researchers used information from over 13,000 women from the Nurses' Healthy Study II. Subjects were divided into groups according to per...

Paula Deen, the famous 64-year-old television queen of decadent southern cooking, revealed on the Today Show yesterday that she has type 2 diabetes after years of rumor and speculation. She has had diabetes for three years and made the announcement the same day her diabetes website was announced. This is a website sponsored by a pharmaceutical company (Novo Nordisk) that is paying her to be a spokesperson to peddle a diabetes drug (Victoza). Oh yes, and her sons are also being reimbursed for their endorsements and one son has started a new cooking show on the Cooking Network featuring lighter versions of his mom's recipes.

Today Deen is facing a backlash. She has now announced she is in a position where a percentage of the endorsement money can go to the American D...

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it was after many appointments for recurrent and persistent yeast infections. At the time I got health care from a clinic where I saw a different doctor each time I visited. Because of this, I saw a different doctor for each infection and they did not realize I had been in often for the same problem. This happened over a course of months.

Although I have a very strong family history of diabetes, I was not educated as to what to look for. For about a year I was having frequent urination, drinking a lot of water, and was having a hard time reading the signs over counters due to blurry vision. These were tell-tale signs. Had I educated myself, I could have caught onto my diabetes a lot earlier.

Luckily I finally got a nurse ...

The day is marked in many ways such as walks, rides, sporting events, television programs, articles, diabetes screenings, information meetings, press conferences, informational publications, workshops, flash mobs, events, activities, and even the act of illuminating buildings and monuments with blue light. Blue light because the logo for World Diabetes Day is a blue circle.

For American Diabetes Month, the American Diabetes Association is asking for your help to stop diabetes. One way you can help is by performing small acts that help in a big way. By raising awareness through your social networks and email, you can urge people to assess their risk for diabetes and take steps to try to prevent it.

According to the ADA, someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 17 seconds. Lets try to stop this. Will you raise your hand to stop diabetes?

The overall theme for American Diabetes Month is "I Raise My Hand to Stop Diabetes." Every week will be dedicated to a different sub-theme. The themes for each week are: 1) Fighting for the Future, 2) Impacting Communities, 3) Celebrating Health, and 4) Commitment to a Cur...

So my little trick or treater had a great night and came home with a bag and a bucket full of candy. He is in bed, and the bulging bag sits five feet away from me. Snickers, Almond Joy, and Kit Kat bars are singing their siren song. Should I throw them out and tell my son an army of zombies broke in and stole them?

No, I shall resist.

A quick mental review of past Halloweens includes episodes of mindlessly popping one into my mouth and setting off a chain reaction, or even better going into that vague mental state where I come to believe that if I don't know the carbohydrate count then the carbohydrate count must be zero.

Those episodes caused a struggle with my blood sugars beginning with Halloween, sliding through Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the...

My son's candy bag is still calling to me. A quick look at the candy reveals that none of the hundreds of candy bags have nutritional data on them.

They're small, so what if I munch on a couple little Snicker's bars. After that--what, damage done, and might as well give up on being good? I could use the excuse of no nutrition data. You say I can look it up? Then I'll just use the excuse that I don't want to look up every single candy or that I can't find the information or the information is confusing. Yea, that sounds good.

Then you remind me that I sent out a link to a list I created that provided carbohydrate counts for common Halloween candy. That is true, but I don't recognize half the candy in his bag. While my list is long, it does n...

I really don't like super sweet food anymore. However, I do appreciate foods with some sweetness. Two of my favorite snacks are mesquite pods and tamarind pods. Mesquite pods taste like delicately sweet Cracker Jack snack food and tamarind pods are tangy and sweet and sour. They are also a lot of fun to research and play around with in the kitchen. Even better both seem to be beneficial for general health and diabetes.

Read about the benefits of mesquite and tamarind and read a really simple recipe for a drink made from mesquite flour.Diabetes-Friendly Sweet Foods originally appeared on About.com Diabetes on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 at 02:57:18.Permalink | Comment | Email this (Source: About Diabetes)

Get ready, American Diabetes Month starts today, November 1, with World Diabetes Day on November 14. Have you participated in the past? What do you recommend and how have you felt it made a difference?

The past couple years I participated in The Big Blue Test. This is where you test your blood sugar, exercise for a few minutes, and then test again. You not only get to see what a big difference it makes your your blood sugar, but what a difference it makes for others. The results are very eye opening.

The Big Blue Test is a program from the Diabetes Hands Foundation, and last year they raised enough money from video views to give 2000 children insulin in third-world countries. The funds were provided by Roche Diabetes Care, the makers of the ACCU-CHEK meter.&...

When I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the early 90's, there were not many books on diabetes, let alone books specifically for women. I remember feeling very lost and alone at that time. When I started my support website in 2001 for women with diabetes who were pregnant or trying to conceive, there was not a huge selection of books on pregnancy with diabetes, let alone one written by a patient peer in a personal style.

With much excitement, I checked out two books this month aimed at women. Read my reviews to see if I feel they are worth reading. If you have had the opportunity to read these books, please leave your own review.

The first book is The Smart Woman's Guide to Diabetes by Amy Stockwell Mercer. The second is called Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Exi...

There are so many things going on in the day, it can be hard to take time to take care of yourself. I know, I am guilty of this too. I will put off self-care in order to get more accomplished. The problem is that sometimes I put it off so much, I'll forget to do it entirely for a while.

Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is not often thought to be a worry for people with type 2 diabetes. However, many of us inject insulin or take oral medications that put us at risk for blood sugar lows. Certain conditions can increase risk as well.

The fact that we can be at risk for lows was brought home to me not too long ago. About 10 years ago, I had to take insulin during pregnancy with preexisting type 2 diabetes. I had frequent lows and once required a week-long hospital stay after I developed a stomach flu. Now, after almost 20 years from my initial diagnosis, I find that oral medications have lost their effectiveness and I need to inject insulin once again.

I hate to admit, I thought, hec, I know what I'm doing, I've done this before. I started on an...

The Harvard School of Public Health published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that links television viewing habits to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death. It may come as a shock (or perhaps not) that the authors point out the fact that aside from working and sleeping, many populations report TV viewing as the most common daily activity.

According to the study, more than 2 hours of daily TV viewing increased the risk for diabetes and heart disease while more than 3 hours increased the risk of premature death. Every two additional hours of viewing time raised the risk for diabetes by 20%, the risk for heart disease by 15%, and the risk of premature death by 13%.

It was estimated that U.S. residents watch about 5 hours of TV a da...

I started a website in 2001 called Diabetic Mommy and the focus was on community and support. The members told me while they appreciated diabetes information on the internet, they appreciated sharing the "life" part of it within our community. One of the members, Kendra from Virginia, came up with a site catch-phrase that captured the sentiment perfectly: LIFE with diabetes - not diabetes with a little bit of life thrown in.

In a previous blog post, I shared how research has shown people have better blood sugar levels with peer support. I have seen the benefits of being part of an online community first-hand. I have also seen these relationships grow and flourish outside of the internet. I can't stress enough how important I think peer support is.

A study published in Nature Genetics claims that researchers have discovered a single "master regulator" gene called the KLF14 gene that causes obesity. According to the study, fat greatly increases risk for metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

This gene was already known to have been linked to Type 2 diabetes and cholesterol, but now it has been identified to control other genes within fat cells. These other genes are linked to insulin, glucose levels, cholesterol, body mass index, and obesity. It also contributes to how subcutaneous fat is distributed in the body.

Interestingly, full sets of the gene are passed down from both parents. However, only the gene from the mother is active. The gene from the father is inactive and does no...

People with Type 2 diabetes have been found to have better blood sugar control after gastric bypass surgery than with diet alone--even if the same amount of weight is lost. A recent study published in Science Translational Medicine attempted to understand if something other than weight loss was contributing to better management of blood sugar.

Based on animal studies, it is suspected levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and fatty acylcarnitines are higher in patients with insulin resistance. So researchers looked at these levels in plasma from morbidly obese patients with Type 2 diabetes who had lost 10 kilograms with either gastric bypass surgery or a strict diet.

They found levels of both were decreased in the gastric bypass patients within a month but not for those...

Is there a cure for diabetes? This is the number one question I receive via email. This is also the number one complaint I receive. Sometimes readers feel I am trying to hide the cure.

At the moment there is no cure, but there are accepted standard treatments for diabetes. These treatments have been studied for efficacy and safety.

Keep in mind the diabetes landscape changes rapidly as new treatments are discovered and new knowledge is acquired. It can be hard for even physicians to keep up, so it is a good idea to try to keep up to date with the latest diabetes news and diabetes education.

Other common related questions are whether there is a natural cure for diabetes or alternative diabetes treatments. This area also changes rapidly. New...

Nicotine is being blamed for higher A1c levels and higher risk for complications in people with diabetes who smoke. The findings may also mean people who take nicotine replacement products such as patches, gum, and electronic cigarettes may need to limit or quit those products.

A study has found the more nicotine present, the higher the blood sugar levels. Nicotine added to human blood samples caused A1c levels to increase by as much as 34%.

Study Author Xaio-Chuan Liu, a professor of chemistry at California State Polytechnic University, states the use of nicotine replacement products should be limited, preferably used for a short period to quit smoking. Going cold turkey may be a better idea.

The findings were reported at the 241st national meeting of the American Chemical Societ...

There are days that Type 2 diabetes gets me down. Not just down but downright mad. The anger is very real. It is known that depression is common with diabetes. Anger is often it's companion. Rather than hold it in or allow it to build and explode without control, it helps to channel the energy in healthy ways.

Here are examples of things that put me in a fowl mood:

I get mad because I feel diabetes is unfair or others misunderstand.
I get mad when I've been following the plan and still struggle with my blood sugar numbers. Little things like the weather, a cold, or my menstrual cycle can raise my numbers and present a challenge.
I get mad when I have to take a medication that causes my blood sugar numbers to skyrocket. Sometimes I have to take a steroid for lung p...

If you subscribe to my newsletters, you may have noticed last week's theme was diabetes and pregnancy. This subject can create fears for pregnancy, birth and beyond. Pregnancy with diabetes used to greatly increase the odds of an unhappy outcome.

However, the causes are much better understood today and pregnancies are more closely followed with standard protocols in place. As a result, with tight control of blood sugar levels and good medical care, a woman with diabetes can have about the same chance for a successful pregnancy as a woman without diabetes.

In an exclusive interview for New Idea Magazine, Australian Aboriginal sprinter Cathy Freeman revealed her pregnancy triggered the development of Type 2 diabetes. She is in her second trimester of pregnancy.

Freeman won gold at...

By Stacey Hugues, About.com Contributing Writer

Walmart, already nationally known for providing affordable food and household choices, has recently unveiled a new initiative to offer customers cheap healthy foods.

Their new program contains five key elements:

Reformulate thousands of everyday packaged food items by 2015, reduce sodium by 25%, added sugars by 10%, and remove all remaining industrially-produced trans fats. This is huge for chronic disease prevention and management since added sodium, sugars, and trans fats in our food system are closely linked to heart disease and diabetes.
Make healthier food choices more affordable. Walmart is initiating a variety of sourcing, pricing, transportation, and logistics initiatives that will drive unnecessary costs out of the supply ch...

I absorbed the news of Jack LaLanne's death with great sadness. To say I was a big fan is a great understatement. I have watched his shows, read his books, had his videos on my YouTube playlist and even proudly owned his juicer.

Members of his family reported he died Sunday due to respiratory failure from pneumonia. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by friends and family. While he did not make it to his goal of 100, he still leaves behind a very impressive legacy.

He was an early proponent of fitness, raw whole foods, healthy living and positive attitude. Standing at only 5'6", he was larger than life mentally and physically. He preached of the detrimental effects of sugar and bleached flour. He enlightened us to the power of healthy foods and exercise via his long-...

If you know many people with diabetes, chances are you know a few who are suffering from depression. Perhaps you have struggled with it yourself. About 20-25% of people with diabetes have symptoms of depression, twice the amount as people without diabetes.

A recent study in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that diabetes and depression are a "double whammy" for women and increase risk of death. There was a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease if depression occurred in a patient who had diabetes over 10 years or used insulin therapy.

The study was based on data from 78,000 women over the age of 54 from the Nurses' Health Study.

The results emphasize why psychosocial support may need to be considered as a standard part of diabetes treatment and may be just as important ...

A company called WellDoc is developing a mobile phone application that Businessweek featured as a new mobile health solution to watch. WellDoc's DiabetesManager System is garnering attention for good reason.

With this app, users enter data such as blood sugar readings into their cell phone or computer. The data is analyzed by the system and coaching provided based on parameters established by their health care provider.

Integration such as this poses many hurdles and requires participation and ease of use for both patients and health care providers. WellDoc has made big strides, which is why this solution is worth watching.

First, the system received FDA clearance in July 2010 for use by adult Type 2 diabetes patients and their health care providers.

In October, AT&T announced a pi...

My friends and family poke fun at me because of my imaginary eating. They tell me to stop because they fear it will cause more cravings. I find the opposite is true.

I may begin with something like, "Oh my gosh, that ice cream would be delicious with toffee bits, peanuts, caramel, cherries and hot fudge." I close my eyes and with a huge smile on my face, imagine taking bite after bite. I savor the thought. I make a fool out of myself. Amazingly if my imagination is vivid enough, it is pretty satisfying.

A study published in the journal Science seems to support the notion that there may be a method to my madness.

It goes to show the power of thinking. I personally feel my imagination satisfies my cravings for those flavors. I also think the real thing is probably not as good as the stu...

A study regarding Byetta (exenatide) combined with Lantus (glargine insulin) achieving good results has been making news lately. I've seen this combo referred to as the "best treatment" or offering the "best results" for people with Type 2 diabetes. This was a short study with limitations. While I think this shows great promise, my personal opinion is that more studies are needed before claims like this can be made.

Exenatide, Insulin Glargine, and Long-term Type 2 Diabetes Study

Type 2 diabetes can become harder to control the longer you have it. The common pharmaceutical treatment progression goes from diet and exercise to oral medications. The next step is usually long-acting basal insulin (such as exenatide) and then the addition of short-acting insulin with meals. In spite of this...

Looking back at National Diabetes month and World Diabetes Day, a common theme stood out to me in regards to diabetes treatment. That theme was that small changes can make a big difference.

I got to interview rocker Bret Michaels, singer Angie Stone and actor/comedian Anthony Anderson. They communicated how small changes--whether it be in diet, exercise or attitude --have allowed them to gain control. They feel they have a better quality of life and are able to enjoy it.

I personally have struggled with strict diet and exercise regimens that left me feeling burnt out, discouraged and overwhelmed. As I've learned more over the years, I realize it is not about extremes or putting myself though a self-imposed boot camp, it's about consistency and do-able, realistic lifestyle chang...

About Angie Stone

I spoke with powerhouse, pop-culture icon and diabetes advocate Angie Stone. In the 1980s, she paved the way for other female rap artists as a member of the first all-female group to release a rap record. Today as an African-American woman with Type 2 diabetes, she is helping deliver diabetes information to the African-American community as one of the "faces" of F.A.C.E., which stands for Fearless African Americans Connected and Empowered.

Born in 1961, she is a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer and actress. In the 1980s she was a member of the hip-hop group The Sequence. In the 1990s she was part of the R&B trio Vertical Hold. As a solo artist she has topped the U.S. Billboard R&B and Dance charts.

I had the pleasure of speaking with actor, comedian, writer, and diabetes advocate Anthony Anderson. He has appeared in over 20 films and currently plays Detective Kevin Bernard on Law and Order. He has Type 2 diabetes and is one of the "faces" of F.A.C.E., which stands for Fearless African Americans Connected and Empowered.

Born in 1970, movie credits include The Departed, Transformers, Kangaroo Jack, Barbershop, and Scary Movie 3. He had his own series on The WB All About the Andersons and had recurring roles on The Bernie Mac Show.

I got to speak to Bret Michaels, a magnetic personality and categorical example of a rock star, who first gained fame as the lead of the popular metal band Poison. He has evolved to add actor, director, producer, screenwriter and reality television star to his list of credits.

He appeared on Celebrity Apprentice 3 in 2010 and won $250,000 for The American Diabetes Association. The win was even more impressive given the fact he was making headlines at the same time for dealing with serious health issues: an emergency appendectomy, a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, transient ischemic attacks and the discovery of a hole in his heart.

With each blow, Michaels quickly got back up and kept going.

Did I mention he also has Type 1 diabetes? A long-time diabetes advocate a...

This is National Diabetes Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. What does this mean for you?

It means great opportunities to take advantage of information, ideas and activities that may improve your life. It also means more chances to take small steps to become involved in the diabetes community and help out in campaigns if you haven't before. You can get involved online as well as events in your local community.

Here are some highlights of what's happening.

In my last blog post, I mentioned how National Diabetes Month presents us with new opportunities to learn, improve our health and get involved.

How about taking time today to think about and commit to a small personal goal or action this month.

Possible Goals or Actions

 Improve blood sugar levels.
Lose weight this month. About 4-8 pounds (1-2 pounds per week) is a good goal.
Commit to exercise 30 minutes a day, 5-7 days a week.
Visit the diabetes section of the library or bookstore and get a book (and read it).
Pick up free publications when you find them and read. Some pharmacies offer free diabetes magazines.
Log what you eat and assess your diet, are you on track? Can improvements be made?
Commit to test your blood sugar faithfully if you have gotten out of the hab...

Researchers comparing blood sugar improvements using diabetes peer support versus traditional nurse care management services were surprised at how large the improvements were with peer support.

Those of us with diabetes who have established social networks with peers are probably not very surprised.

I started to take advantage of peer support in 2001. Prior to that, my support was limited to my doctors, nurses and educators. While these professionals are important, it was hard to find comfort talking to people who did not have diabetes and were paid to act like my friend. I went online and found other people with diabetes to share information and support. It changed my life.

We could not wait to share improved A1c results and began to give special graphic rewards for improvements. O...

Some forum members had been having similar struggles. They had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes but treatment did not seem to help. Often they were at or near their ideal weight and had no family history of the disease. Sometimes oral medications helped but they would lose efficacy over time. Sometimes oral medications didn't help at all. Diet and exercise didn't seem to make a difference either. Many would try very hard to gain control only to be scolded by doctors for not following their treatment regimen. These members were frustrated, co...

Then I started to think about Christopher Columbus. Of course my mind wandered to a favorite subject of mine--indigenous foods, specifically pre-columbian Native American foods.

The term "pre-columbian" refers to the time before Columbus arrived in the Americas. I have found studying these foods not only interesting but also beneficial to me as far as helping to control my diabetes.

It can be hard to locate specific recipes for pre-columbian foods as oral history was favored over written. Many dishes are lost forever. However, we know some basics. They used local in-season whole foods. Fruits, leafy greens, vegetables, nuts and seeds were mai...

Right on the heels of a recent blog post regarding safety concerns over the diabetes drug Actos (pioglitazone), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a huge announcement today about another diabetes medication in the same thiazolidinedione drug class--Avandia (rosiglitazone).

The FDA announced Avandia will be restricted to Type 2 diabetes patients who cannot control their diabetes with other medications.

This decision was in response to data that suggests patients taking Avandia may have an elevated risk of cardiovascular events. In a statement from Janet Woodcock, M.D., Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA, the evidence was "not robust or consistent" but there was not reliable evidence to refute concerns.

High risk for Type 2 diabetes may someday be identified in kids by examining their DNA.

Diabetes is part of my family. My parents have it. All my grandparents had it. Numerous cousins, aunts and uncles have it. Those who haven't been diagnosed, are either resisting getting tested (although they display all the symptoms) or they are at very high risk.

On the other hand, my husband's family appears diabetes-free.

So a question that has weighed heavily on my mind: What are my son's chances for diabetes?

When I was pregnant, I went for genetic counseling and was informed of the chances of my son getting diabetes later in life. He has a better chance than most. We try to watch what he eats and we make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

However, what if a lab test showed he had genetic indica...

I had taken Avandia for years when I began to see news reports questioning its safety. Of course I was scared. Was the very drug I was taking to improve my health and decrease risks of diabetes-related complications hurting my heart? Wait, was that a weird thump?

When the safety of the once most popular diabetes drug in the world, Avandia (rosiglitazone), was questioned, sales of Actos (pioglitazone) increased. These drugs are in the same thiazolidinedione drug class. In 2008, Actos, manufactured by Takeda Pharmeceuticals, had sales of over $2.4 billion and was the 10th best-selling drug in the U.S.

Now the Food and Drug Administration has issued a statement that it is reviewing data based on concerns Actos might increase the risk for bladder cancer.

Based on five-year data from a 10-ye...

I just got my flu shot. It was cheap and painless. Well, it seemed cheap since I have health insurance. However to people with diabetes who are uninsured, that $30 might seem no different than a million dollars.

CVS Caremark Minute Clinic and California-based nonprofit Direct Relief are partnering to offer $5 million in free flu shots to uninsured patients beginning September 20.

The American Diabetes Association generally recommends that every person with diabetes get a flu shot every year. The Centers for Disease Control states "If you Have diabetes, a flu shot could save your life." From my own personal experience, I haven't been sick as often since I've started getting a regular flu shot.

The flu shot doesn't guarantee you will never get sick, but it will make it harder for you...

This study found a link between sleep and developing diabetes or pre-diabetes. However, studies like these should be of value to those of us already with diabetes because they reveal how complicated this disease is and how we need to think of management in broader terms.

We are complicated biological creatures. Diabetes is influenced by various hormonal systems which are in turn influenced by all sorts of stimuli. There is a need to look at ourselves in a holistic way and care for ourselves. In other words, we need to consider our bodies, minds, emotions, lives, stressors, environment - the list could go on.

According to the study, getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night increases the likelihood of developing diabetes and heart disease. The researchers looked at data from 1,455 partic...

I replaced it with a more advanced smartphone. I discovered apps have become more sophisticated. This phone can be pointed at the sky and tell me what stars or constellations I'm looking at. Mind boggling!

I found some diabetes apps that work like a paperless blood glucose log with graphs and easy ways to share my levels. I still have to test my blood and then enter the information.

According to the New York Times' live blogging from the F.D.A. hearing on Avandia, the votes are in and it's not looking good for GlaxoSmithKline.

Of the 33 members of the committee, only three voted in favor of keeping Avandia on the market as is. Seven advocated adding more warnings on the drug; ten votes went to restricting its sale or making significant revisions to the label, and twelve committee members voted to take Avandia off the market altogether. The F.D.A. will make a final decision "at a later date."

A New York Times article published today makes the scandalous revelation that SmithKline Beecham (now called GlaxoSmithKline) conducted a study on its new diabetes drug, Avandia, in 1999, and has been working to hide the findings from the public for the past 11 years.

The 1999 study found that Avandia was not only no more effective than its competitor, Actos, but also that it presented more risks of heart attack and stroke. The Times published the following excerpt from an email written in 2001 by SmithKline executive Dr. Martin I. Freed:

"This was done for the U.S. business, way under the radar. Per Sr. Mgmt request, these data should not see the light of day to anyone outside of GSK."

To make matters worse, it seems that Dr. John Jenkins, head of the F.D.A.'s office of new drugs, has ...

We've known since 2007 that Avandia, once the world's most popular diabetes drug, may increase risk of stroke and heart attack. Two new studies further confirm the suspicions raised three years ago. The FDA plans to meet in July to finally decide whether or not to take Avandia off the market.

The larger of the two studies, commissioned by the FDA and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, followed 230,000 Medicare patients who were taking either Avandia or a comparable drug called Actos. The results, study leader Dr. David Graham told NPR, indicate a frightening probability: "If you treated 60 people for a year with Avandia," he says, "you would cause one extra case of heart attack, stroke, heart failure or death compared to if you had treated 60 patients with Actos...

A Harvard School of Public Health study shows that processed meat such as hot dogs, sausage, bacon, and deli meats may increase the risk for heart disease and diabetes. The findings were 42% and 19% higher risk respectively.
The study was carried out on the assumption that we have inconsistent and incomplete data on the effects of meat consumption on various diseases including diabetes as well as no real distinction between processed and unprocessed meats.
Basically, they felt clumping processed and unprocessed meat into one category was like saying a banana and a banana split were the same nutritionally.
While processed and unprocessed meats contain about the same amount of saturated fat and cholesterol, the processed meats contain about four times more sodium and 50% more nitrates. It is...

A study published in May of this year questioned whether loss of skeletal muscle and strength had an effect on insulin resistance and high glucose levels.
I say, of course it does! I've tried every diet imaginable - fad diets, doctor-prescribed diets, self-made diets - and while I may have lost weight a few times, my general health, sense of well-being and Type 2 diabetes control did not improve unless I also did a form of exercise that hardened my muscles.
UCLA researchers studied data on 14,528 people from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to see if sarcopenia or loss of skeletal muscle and strength was associated with diabetes.
They concluded, "Dieting to be thin is on its own not enough to stave off diabetes."
Isn't it nice to have research to confirm you've...

When I was young, I loved watching reruns of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. I was fascinated by their faithful cocktail hour. How many times had we seen Samantha carrying out an attractive tray of drinks to Darren and Mr. Tate?

It turns out they weren't just enjoying some slight tipsiness -- they could have been lowering their risk for Type 2 diabetes. The National Institute for Public Health and Environment with Dutch medical and science centers carried out a 10-year study of 35,000 adults ranging in age from 20 to 70, and focused on Type 2 diabetes.

The study found that women who have one glass per day and men who have up to two have a 40% less chance of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who don't drink at all.

But wait...before you pop that cork, those drinks have to be ear...

The American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the American College of Cardiology just updated their recommendations on the use of aspirin in patients with diabetes.

The new recommendation: Low-dose aspirin is an appropriate and effective prophylactic method for diabetes patients with certain cardiovascular disease risks. Who are those folks? Mostly patients over 50 (men) or 60 (women), with one or more risk factors for a vascular event. (Risk factors include smoking, hypertension, and a family history of heart disease, among other things.) The new advice says that if patients are diabeteic with few or no risk factors for vascular disease, they probably won't benefit from taking aspirin. This is a change to the earlier recommendation, which stated that diabetes pat...

If you're taking Metformin -- an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes also known by its brand names Fortamet, Glucophage, Glumteza, Glucophage XR, Riomet and Avandamet -- you might want to consider checking your B12 levels.

A four-year study of 390 patients with type 2 diabetes at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that those taking the drug had a 19% reduction of vitamin B12 levels over time, while those given the placebo showed no notable change in B12 levels.

Vitamin B12, which is essential for neurological function and red blood cell formation, among other things, occurs naturally in many foods and can also be taken in pill form. Symptoms of a B12 deficiency include weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, constipation, and neurological changes li...

Yet another reason to get to bed earlier: A small study of nine people at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that a single night of bad sleep can negatively affect the body's ability to use insulin, the hormone that controls glucose sugar. While further studies are necessary, researchers are speculating that there could be a connection between Westerners' increasingly poor sleep habits and the uptick in instances of adult-onset diabetes. Adults typically need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.

In January of this year, the FDA approved a new drug for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Victoza (liraglutide) is a once-a-day injection that helps to control blood sugar levels. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that promotes insulin production in the pancreas when digestion occurs.

The FDA says that Victoza should not be used as a first-line therapy for patients whose blood sugar is not controlled through diet and exercise.

There are some safety considerations associated with use of Victoza. Increased incidence of pancreatitis was noticed during clinical trials of the drug. Of 3,900 people tested on Victoza, seven developed pancreatitis. There was only one occurrence of pancreatitis, in patients using a different diabetes drug.

But more troubling is the apparent r...

According to a press release from Joslin Diabetes Center, the arthritis drug, salsalate proved to lower blood glucose levels significantly. In the study, salsalate lowered A1c levels by 0.5%, as well as lowering triglycerides and raising a protein that appears to benefit cardiac health.

Did you know that diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. today? According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, between 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness every year are attributed to diabetes.
If you have diabetes, what can you do to protect your vision?

Try to keep your blood sugar levels in a normal range. High blood sugar can damage delicate blood vessels in the eye.
Visit an eye doctor regularly for checkups.
If you notice any changes in your vision, call your eye doctor immediately.

According to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, American kids are developing a trend toward "constant eating". Most kids eat three snacks a day in addition to three meals a day. Researchers feel that this is a contributing factor for the increase in childhood obesity.
The study includes surveys of food intake of over 31,000 American kids from 1977 to 2006. Since 1977 the percentage of kids who eat snacks between meals rose from 74 to 98 percent.
A majority of kids snack on empty calories and junk foods such as salty, sugary, and fat-ridden foods. Candy consumption is also on the rise.
As the childhood obesity rate climbs, so does the incidence of type 2 diabetes in kids.
It's important to limit the amount of snack foods that kids eat, and to provide them with...

On Wednesday, Feb. 24th, 2010, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) issued a response to the recent Senate Finance Committee's "Staff Report on GlaxoSmithKline and the Diabetes Drug Avandia".
The report had stated that GSK, the manufacturer of Avandia, (rosiglitazone) did not warn patients that the drug was potentially deadly, when cardiovascular events and deaths were first brought to light.
In their response, GSK says, "The Senate Finance Committee's January 2010 Staff Report on GlaxoSmithKline and the Diabetes Drug Avandia" ("Staff Report") does not present an accurate, balanced, or complete view of the currently available information on Avandia® (rosiglitazone maleate).
After ongoing observational studies on the safety of the type 2 diabetes drug, rosiglitazone (Avandia), the FDA issued a statement today that says, for now, rosiglitazone will stay on the market, at least until all the results of all the studies are in, most likely in July of this year. The results will be presented at a public meeting at that time.
This announcement follows major news stories of this past weekend, which brought to light a confidential report on rosiglitazone by a U.S. Senate investigatory committee.
In that report, according to ABC News, Glaxo Smith Kline, the manufacturer of rosiglitazone did not warn patients that Avandia was potentially deadly, when cardiovascular events and deaths were first brought to light.

Neuropathy is a long-term complication of diabetes, which means it can take many years for neuropathy to develop. Nerve damage happens over time, due to prolonged exposure to the damaging affects of high blood glucose levels. The longer a person has diabetes, the higher the risk of developing neuropathy, especially if their disease is not controlled well.
If you keep your blood sugar well-controlled, you can reduce your risk of developing neuropathy. But, sometimes, even when someone is trying really hard to keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible, neuropathy can still occur, especially if someone has had diabetes for a very long time.
Even if this happens, the important thing to remember is that well-controlled blood sugars can help lessen the severity of complications if t...

The FDA has issued a warning that counterfeit bottles of Alli, the popular over-the-counter weight loss drug have been found. The counterfeit capsules contain sibutramine, a drug that is also known by the brand name, Meridia, a prescription weight loss drug that is a controlled substance.
Alli contains orlistat, a medication that works by blocking the absorption of fat from food. Sibutramine works by triggering the brain to make a person feel full or satisfied while eating less.
The counterfeit Alli does not contain orlistat. It contains sibutramine, which can increase blood pressure and heart rate, which can cause serious problems in people with cardiovascular conditions.
If you have purchased Alli recently, especially from the internet, be aware that the product may contain sibutramine.

A recent study from John Hopkins Medicine showed that people who quit smoking are at increased risk for type 2 diabetes. The weight gain that often accompanies quitting smoking is the factor that puts you at risk, not the quitting smoking. So, what to do to keep your weight in check while you quit?
The January issue of Women's Health Magazine advises one simple strategy for avoiding that weight gain. Regular exercise while quitting helps keep the weight off, and it also helps manage the anxiety and craving that also go hand in hand with quitting smoking.
It doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. A 30 minute walk every day will help you quit smoking without gaining weight and will decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes.

A press release from John Hopkins Medicine announced last week that according to results of a study, quitting smoking may actually increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.
But is it the act of quitting smoking that increases the risk, or is it the weight gain that often accompanies quitting that actually raises the risk of diabetes.
That's what the researchers set out to prove. The study looked at 10,892 nondiabetic middle-aged adults. They followed them for 17 years, collecting health data including, diabetes status, glucose levels, and weight.
The people who smoked the most and gained the most weight when they quit smoking had the highest increase in type 2 diabetes.
It's not the quitting that causes type 2 diabetes. It's the weight gain. Quitting smoking is still the best thing you can do...

A recent study from Ohio State University shows that when people with diabetes learn to use the glycemic index when planning their meals, it helps them to manage their blood glucose levels better.
The glycemic index rates foods by how much they raise blood glucose. Candy, sugar, cake and cookies have a high glycemic index, while whole grains have a lower glycemic index.
The study taught participants how to use the glycemic index in a 9 week education program.
According to Carla Miller, senior author of the study and associate professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University, "We found that with education, people with diabetes were able to adopt a lower glycemic-index diet. And it had a significant improvement in their weight control and glucose control."

According to a press release, a Loyola University Health System study has shown that 1 in 5 people with type 2 diabetes is morbidly obese.
One hundred or more pounds overweight is considered morbidly obese. This is also a BMI of 40 or above. The study looked at data from the NHANES study which spans 30 years. During that time, the incidence of morbid obesity has risen 141 percent in people with type 2 diabetes.
The researchers offer these reasons for the increase in obesity...

Inexpensive food
Larger portion sizes
Increase in consumption of sugary soda

A study from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine shows that one of the genes that may be responsible for causing type 2 diabetes may also be linked to the risk of childhood obesity
According to a press release, study leader Struan F.A. Grant, Ph.D., a researcher and associate director of the Center for Applied Genomics of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says, "This finding suggests that there may be genetic activity during childhood that lays the foundation for the later development of type 2 diabetes."
Obesity is thought to be a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 typically occurs in adults over 40, although in recent years the incidence of type 2 diabetes is affecting younger adults and even kids. More studi...

Pomegranates have recently been labeled as a wonder fruit, full of antioxidants and vitamins. High in fiber, low in carbs, they can help you round out your healthy eating plan.

Most people who have diabetes are aquainted with the A1c test. This test measures average blood sugars over the course of two or three months. But did you know that there is another test, called the fructosamine test which measures average blood sugars over the course of a few weeks?
When does your doctor use this test?
Usually the A1c test is all that's required to let you and your doctor know how your overall blood glucose levels are doing. But, if your medications or insulin have been changed or if your doctor would like to check how treatment changes might be affecting your blood sugar, he or she might order the fructosamine test. It gives results in a shorter period of time than the A1c.
Also, if you are pregnant and have gestational diabetes, the doctor might order the fructosamine t...

The Fight It! Campaign, founded by Christopher Thomas and his website, Diabetic Rockstar, is holding a unique kind of fundraiser. This Friday, November 27th, traditionally known as "Black Friday" will be a day when those who would like to help people who can't afford their diabetes supplies, can donate one dollar to the Fight It! Friday cause.
All the money collected goes to people who need it. The average person with diabetes spends $14,000 a year on medical expenses. Fight It! helps people who can't afford their diabetes supplies.
Diabetic Rockstar's Fight It! campaign raises money to help financially struggling people with diabetes using many fund-raising events.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a large study spanning several years. The study looked at 3,234 people who were at a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and compared healthy lifestyle changes and weight loss, with taking diabetes medication, to see which preventative method was more effective at lowering the risk of being diagnosed with diabetes.
Participants who lost a modest amount of weight and kept it off, while increasing their physical activity, lowered their chances of getting type 2 diabetes by 34%. Participants who took the diabetes drug, metformin, lowered their risk by 18%.
Interestingly, people over 60 years old, who lost weight and exercised, lowered their risk by 50%.

Did you know that laughter can lower your blood sugar? When you have type 2 diabetes, it's important to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. There are many ways to lower blood sugar, but scientists in Japan have discovered that laughing can also help keep blood sugar levels closer to normal.
In a recent study from the University of Tsukuba in Japan, it was reported that laughter lowered blood sugar in both people with diabetes, and those who didn't have the disease.
Nineteen people with type 2 diabetes, and 5 without, were monitored for blood glucose levels while they watched a serious lecture program. Their blood glucose levels did not change. The next day they were monitored as they watched a humorous program. Every participant's blood glucose levels dropped, whet...

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. It is also the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. today.
What is diabetic retinopathy?
The retina is full of tiny little blood vessels. Retinopathy is the damage to the blood vessels of the retina, caused by prolonged high blood glucose levels. The blood vessels can become enlarged or clogged when blood sugar is high. They can also become weak and rupture. The retina can even become detached from the back of the eye.
What might you experience if you have diabetic retinopathy?

Blurry or double vision
Floaters or dark patches in your vision
If you have a detached retina, you may see flashes, dark spots or a "dark curtain" over part of your vision. A detached retina needs immediate medical attention.

Retinopathy is not always noticeabl...
