These days, we're hearing more and more about kids having behavioral problems, including defiance -- sometimes labelled as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
It's three weeks into January -- by now, many of us who made New Year's Resolutions will have had at least one relapse ...

So should you just give in, and resign yourself to another year of addiction? No way!
Image © Katherine Evans

In the run up to Christmas, I've been blogging about how to handle various family members when they get drunk. Sons are more vulnerable and may need looking after, but it is common enough to be considered "normal" for a teenage boy to get drunk at least once. But dealing with a drunk daughter is another issue entirely. ...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

Every addiction takes it toll, and one of the most inescapable consequences is experiencing money problems. While the best way to stop your addiction from draining your bank account dry is to quit, this can take time and usually involves several stages. And if you have already quit, it often still takes time to get back on your feet, financially. So how can you save money quickly and easily? ...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

Many people are successful in quitting heroin or painkillers on their own, and others succeed in quitting with the help of therapy. But some people find the cravings associated with heroin withdrawal, or withdrawal from painkillers, so difficult to cope with that they relapse again and again. This is where medications like Buprenorphine can help.

Buprenorphine is one of several medications which can help with heroin addiction. It works by blocking the opiate receptors in the brain, thereby reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings, but bypassing the heroin high, that is another element of the addictive process....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

I just reviewed a new book, Crazy About Money, which promised insight into spending and money problems for anyone. Yet, when I picked up this book, I found that it was written for a middle aged, middle class audience who are among the wealthiest people on the planet. There was very little advice for those people whom I consider really need financial help.

For problem gamblers and shopaholics, money is central to their addiction. But most other addictions have severe financial consequences, which can make it impossible to sustain a "normal" life, causing the mass homelessness and poverty that has become an accepted part of our urban landscape. Many drug addicts turn to a life of crime, using sex work and drug dealing to support their addiction.

Insite, North Amercia's only safe injection site, has been under threat since it opened. And now, once again, it has won the right to remain open.

But safe injection sites are only one form of harm reduction for heroin users, whose risks are among the most severe and yet the most preventable within the addictions community. In fact, the two main risks of heroin injection -- overdose and infection, could potentially be eradicated by facilities such as Insite. Overdose is reversible, which is why facilities like Insite are so effective in saving lives that would be lost if those same people used heroin on their own, and infection is preventable by the provision of sterile needles and injection equipment....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

Prevention is better than cure, and prevention of internet addiction is particularly important for young people such as students.

At college and university, computers are everywhere. Labs and libraries are full of them, lecture halls are filled with students tapping into their laptops, and everyone seems to have a cellphone or smartphone these days. As I blogged previously, this is not universally accepted as a positive step in academia, and the perils of being hyperconnected are increasingly being documented.

If you've been following my blog for a while, you will know my views on the harm done to people with addictions by the lack of compassion they face in society, particularly when it comes from those who are supposed to help them -- healthcare professionals. So I was delighted to hear from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that they are developing an innovative new project to enhance professional attitudes towards people with addiction. ...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

Pro ana, an online movement encouraging self starvation, is increasingly being recognized as a problem, yet few seem to recognize the inevitability that pro ana or something like it was bound to happen sooner or later. Although not strictly an addiction, the eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, bears some striking similarities to addiction. Many who are involved in the pro ana movement describe themselves as "addicted to being thin" -- and a treatment model often used in treating anorexia is most well known for its application to addictive behaviors -- the Stages of Change model. ...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

Boxing Day, not Christmas Day, is the most important day of the holiday period for shopoholics, because of the thrill and excitement of the Boxing Day sales.

Often the most heavily discounted shopping day of the year, and certainly the most heavily advertized as such, Boxing Day sales are the quickest way to part people with shopping addiction from their cash, often worsening money problems, and increasing debt....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

The holidays present many different situations in which too much drinking is expected, even encouraged. This can be a problem not only for heavy drinkers and alcoholics, but also for people who normally control their drinking, or who are inexperienced drinkers. The work Christmas party is an example of a situation in which you are seen as a "lightweight" or "not one of the team" if you abstain, so you need to be prepared in order to keep your dignity intact at the work Christmas party.

But once work is over, it can get even harder. For those who have heavy drinkers in the family, you can be under constant pressure to join your relatives in a drink, or two, which can lead to more and more. Friends can also be a source of peer pressure to drink, and you c...

A recent poppy seed drug test fiasco in Pennsylvania demonstrates the worst case scenario for drug test misuse.

According to Courthouse News Service, a newborn baby's mother, Elizabeth Mort, was given a urine drug test during labor, and tested positive for opiates as a result of her consuming a poppy seed bagel just prior to giving birth. Three days later, child protection services showed up with the police and forcibly removed the baby from her parents, not to be returned to them for another five days....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

The debate on legalizing pot in California is complex and thorny, with compelling arguments on both sides. On the one hand, you have the proponents of Proposition 19, arguing that criminalizing pot has failed, and that while there is no way to protect the public from the existence of marijuana, the funds generated by pot could enrich the resources in the state of California and reduce the power of drugs cartels....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

The US Navy, with the assistance of Hazelden, has developed a new program to support personnel struggling with addictions.

The program was inspired by increased knowledge about addiction problems in the navy. Furthermore, it was found that sailors struggle to remain sober after alcohol and drug treatment, with many relapsing as a result of becoming disconnected from the support of the treatment center....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

A recent fumble over a facebook pot picture illustrates the muddle that politicians and policy makers frequently find themselves in over illicit drugs, and particularly the social acceptability of pot.

And while it seems obvious that keeping drugs criminalized is problematic, the idea of decriminalization is a scary possibility for many, especially parents, who are concerned that a change in the legal status of drugs will send the message to their children that drug use is OK. ...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

According to Newswise, a new type of medical marijuana has been identified, which could be effective in treating neuropathic pain, without the side effects.

It works primarily on one type of cannabis receptor, located in the peripheral immune system rather than the brain, which is where other cannabis receptors responsible for the marijuana high are located. Research has shown that while MDA19 controls pain, it does not cause the other nervous system effects of cannabis....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Addictions)

While sceptics wonder whether actor Charlie Sheen's current stint in "prehab" -- a spell in a rehab facility to prevent past problems from reoccurring -- is simply a publicity stunt, I am left wondering why so many people insist that problems should get as bad as they can get before someone should seek help.
In my experience of working with people with a range of addictions, the sooner someone seeks help, the better. With headlines linking celebrities such as Tiger Woods and David Duchovny with sex addiction rehab, it is easy to slip into taking sex addiction for granted as a recognized condition. But the reality of the situation is that, despite years of advocacy from groups such as the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH), sex addiction continues to elude professional recognition. The long-awaited proposed criteria for the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), due to be published in 2013, have been revealed, and are available for public viewing and commentary online.
Fundamental changes to the way that addictions are categorized are proposed, including:

A shift in focus from "dependence," which is proposed to refer exclusively to physiological dependence as a normal process, to "addiction," which is proposed to refer to "compulsive, out-of-control" behaviors.

Re-naming the "Substance-Related Disorders" category "Addiction and Related Disorders," a move which reflects both of the above changes.

These are very positive changes. In ad...

Smoking, as everyone knows by now, takes a serious toll on health. So when you decide to quit smoking, it can be a great time to think about making changes to your diet. One of the payoffs of smoking is enhancement to your senses of taste and smell, which can make food more pleasurable than it was when you were smoking, but to avoid weight gain and substitute addictions to food or drink, a healthy diet is essential.
A diet containing the full requirements of vitamins and minerals is essential for health, but may be more important during the period of recovery after smoking, as the body repairs the damage done. Research indicates smokers have lower vitamin C levels than non-smokers and ex-smokers, yet this vitamin is also needed to repair the damage caused by cigarett...

So often, addictive behavior is judged on the basis of it's social acceptability. The stereotypical addict is socially deviant, addicted to alcohol or drugs, and highly stigmatized. Yet there are many more socially acceptable but problematic types of alcohol or drug use, which can cause many more problems for the individual or other people, such as painkiller overuse, or binge drinking.
And behavioral addictions, such as food, exercise and video game addiction, can often be hidden behind a veneer of social acceptability which conceals the pain and difficulty these addictions can cause.
