If you are 60 years old or older and drink more than the recommended guidelines for moderate alcohol consumption, you could run the risk of losing memory and other cognitive functions, especially if you are a female.
Taylor Meyer was 17 years old when she drowned in a Massachusetts swamp after a night of binge drinking beer and vodka shots with her friends, beginning in the basement of one of her friend's home. When her body was found Oct. 20, 2008 she had a blood alcohol level of .13.

Can her teenage friends be held accountable for her death? Taylor's mother is going to find out; she filed a lawsuit against those who provided her with alcohol.
There is a saying around the rooms of recovery that some alcoholics never find help "in this lifetime." In other words, they never get to the point of reaching out for help and they continue drinking all the way to the grave, all the while denying they have a problem. For friends and family members, watching someone drink themselves to death is a lonely, frustrating and devastating experience, as D.J. describes in her painful tale of his mother's final days.

If you live in a coed college dormitory or apartment, you may have noticed a lot of partying going on around you. Students who live in coed housing are much more likely to binge drink regularly, but not as much as students living in fraternity or sorority houses.

These were the findings of a new nationwide study of 500 students on five different college campuses.
If you drink heavily at times during your pregnancy your child will run the risk of developing a variety of behavioral problems, according to a study of 2,000 mothers and their children. The types of problems differ depending on whether the drinking occurred in early or late pregnancy, the researchers found.

The researchers concluded that the timing and the intensity of the mother's drinking during pregnancy affects the type of behavior problems their children developed.
For years teens were getting the message about the dangers of abusing drugs and teen surveys showed a long gradual decline in drug use. But as the first decade of the 21st Century came to a close, that decline appeared to be coming to an end.

The latest findings from the annual Monitoring the Future study indicated that teen marijuana use has been increasing over the past two years - three years for 12th graders, following years of declining use.
The United States is not the only place where abuse of prescription pain medications is a growing problem. A study from Toronto reveals that deaths from opioid use in Ontario have doubled since 1991 and deaths related to OcyContin have increased five-fold. Opioids, also known as narcotic pain relievers, are among the most commonly prescribed medications in Canada.

Deaths from opioid use increased from 13.7 deaths per million in 1991 to 27.2 death per million in 2004, the study reported.
In spite of denials to the contrary, the alcohol industry continues to target underage drinking by advertising beverages that appeal to young people in magazines with young readers. Alcoholic beverages popular among youths are more likely to be advertised in magazines with high youth readership than alcoholic drinks consumed mainly by adults, according to a new study.

A recently released police report revealed that when golfing great Tiger Woods crashed his SUV November 30 into a fire hydrant and a tree in a neighbor's yard, he was unresponsive at the scene, a witness said he had been drinking earlier and taking prescription medications (Ambien and Vicodin) and he had obviously been driving erraticaly.

However, when a Florida State Trooper, who suspected Tiger Woods was driving under the influence, sought a subpoena for his blood results from the hospital, prosecutors rejected the petition for "insufficient information." The Florida Highway Patrol wound up citing Woods for careless driving and fined him $164.
