Many of you have been following the penalty phase of the trial of convicted California serial killer Rodney Alcala. This week the Associated Press reported that a psychiatrist testifying in the case, Dr. Richard Rappaport, told jurors that he believes Alcala has borderline personality disorder (BPD).

While I don't know enough about Alcala to comment on his case, I can say that it is quite rare for individuals with BPD to engage in the kinds of premeditated acts that Alcala has been accused of. In fact, this kind of violence is more often associated with two of the other Cluster B personality disorders: narcissistic and antisocial personality disorder. BPD does increase risk of violent behavior, but violent acts in people with BPD tend to be impulsive, not planned.

Why is a potential diag...

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) recently posted the proposed changes to the upcoming edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fifth edition) or DSM-V, scheduled to be published in 2013. While these are only a draft of the revisions, the proposed changes reflect a major change to the way that personality disorders are diagnosed.

You can find the possible changes here. Of note, the APA is proposing that a general diagnosis of "personality disorder" be given to individuals who exhibit extreme deficits in personality functioning. In addition, the APA is advocating that certain subtypes of personality disorders be retained. Borderline personality disorder is reformulated as "borderline type" in this new proposed system.

The potential changes are so swee...

Dr. Barbara Bolen, About.com's Guide to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, just posted a review of a new iPhone application that helps guide you through intense anxiety or panic symptoms.

I haven't tried the app myself, but it sounds like this kind of application would be very helpful if you suffer from bouts of extreme anxiety - but it may also help with other kinds of internal experiences (e.g., other emotions, like anger, or urges to engage in impulsive behavior). Has anyone tried the app? Did you find it useful? Leave a comment below...

Sometimes with the stress of the holidays and everything that's going on this time of year, practicing fundamental skills can fall to the wayside. But now that things have (hopefully) slowed down, its a good time to recommit to your mindfulness skills practice.

This week I picked up a recent issue of Psychology Today and read an article titled "Mother, Damned-est," about the legacy of poor mothering in people's lives. The issue of motherhood is a very relevant one for BPD. Lots of people with BPD had bad experiences with a caregiver figure (notice that I didn't say mother-- because all caregivers are important to development), and many have trouble being stable parental figures for their kids. One of the most common concerns brought up by family members in the BPD forum is about the effect their BPD loved one is having on children in the family.

Having BPD does not mean that you can't be a good parent. But it takes a lot of work, and sometimes people with BPD need both treatment and parent education to optimize their parenting skills.Surviving a...

In fact, many people with BPD are very successful in their work (even when other areas of their lives seem to be falling apart). On the other hand, many people with BPD have lots of trouble in their careers, and are either unemployed, underemployed, or very unhappy in their jobs. Read more...

I often get emails from readers who are looking for BPD therapists. When I get an email like this from someone in the U.S. I generally direct them to the Behavioral Tech Clinical Resources Directory-- which lists programs that provide Dialectical Behavior Therapy in the U.S. only.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a comprehensive list of DBT providers outside of the U.S. Has anyone else had any luck with this? If so, please share any resources that have been helpful to you!

Pediatricians throughout the United States now have the opportunity to become specialists in the area of child abuse and neglect. In fact, Ofelia Casillas of the Chicago Tribune reported that more than 200 physicians have already taken the first certification exams in child abuse (read the full article here).

The hope is that this new sub-specialty will help promote research into child abuse, as well as provide the field with much needed expertise in this area. Pediatricians with the certification will be able to consult on child abuse cases and to teach other physicians how to spot child abuse. This is potentially good news for the BPD community, given the link between BPD and chronic childhood maltreatment.New Sub-Specialty for Pediatricians: Child Abuse originally appeared on About.com...

I recently did an interview with a journalist on the topic of domestic violence and the holidays. She wanted to know whether there is an increase in domestic violence over the holiday season. Actually, the research doesn't show any link between domestic violence and situational stress. However, there are also lots of reasons that people do not want to report incidents of relationship violence during the holiday season.

If you are in a violent relationship, know that there is help. There are a number of hotlines set up to help you understand your options and stay safe. In the U.S., you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.
Maybe all those annoying holiday songs are getting on your nerves, but there is a lot of research to suggest that listening to music that conveys a certain mood can in fact lead to a change in emotional state.

I've had quite a few clients who have used this strategy with success: when you are stuck in a certain mood, listen to some mood incongruent music (i.e., music that conveys the opposite mood from the one you are in). For example, if you are sad, listen to something upbeat. If you are angry, listen to something soothing. Just don't get pulled into that latest Evanescence song!

For the past several months, both here on the blog and in our BPD forum, we've been having a conversation about the name "borderline personality disorder," the stigma associated with the name, and whether a name change could help reduce stigma. Now that the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM-V) is drawing closer, this is an important conversation to be having!

This site is not the only one that is generating interest on the topic. Check out this article by Elizabeth Bogod on stigma and BPD published on the Borderline Personality Disorder Today website.

Ms. Bogod has also started a petition targeted at the chair of the DSM-V task force to ask for a name change. If you want to sign the petition, take action here.BPD Name Change and Stigma-- T...

As the holidays approach, lots of people with BPD (and people with BPD in their families) struggle. Holidays are complicated-- there are so many expectations that we should be "happy," that families should be together, and that joy prevails. But what if you're not all that happy, or if family is a major stressor?

Here are some tips on surviving the holidays for BPD families. Hope these help get you through what can be a very difficult time.

A topic that comes up quite frequently in the BPD forum is whether or not to tell other people about your BPD diagnosis. BPD is such a stigmatized condition that sometimes you may feel reluctant to tell even mental health providers that you've been diagnosed with BPD.

What experiences have you had with disclosing your diagnosis? Have you ever dreaded telling someone you have BPD and then had it go better than expected when you actually told? Or, have you had experiences of rejection when you shared your diagnosis? Share your story of disclosure...Should You Disclose Your Diagnosis? originally appeared on About.com Borderline Personality Disorder on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 22:27:41.Permalink | Comment | Email this (Source: About.com Borderline Personality Disorder)

I was reading an article today on teen stereotypes and teen behavior. The main research finding in this article was that if parents believe that their teen is likely to conform to negative behaviors (e.g., teen drinking) then then their teen actually DOES engage in more negative behavior.

What does this have to do with BPD? Well, it got me thinking that perhaps the same kind of self-fulfilling prophecy could happen with BPD. There is so much stigma attached to BPD, and many people expect those with BPD to "behave badly." Is it possible that knowing what others expect of you actually makes you conform to this expectation by acting out? What do you think?Stigma and Self-Fulfilling Prophecy originally appeared on About.com Borderline Personality Disorder on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 01:...

Difficult relationships are very common for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). A key symptom of BPD is fear of abandonment. This symptom may cause you to need frequent reassurance that abandonment is not imminent, to go to great lengths to try to avoid abandonment, and to feel devastated when someone ends a relationship with you.
But people with BPD also tend to have more unstable, chaotic relationships than others, and these relationships often end prematurely due to conflict. So, in many ways, it's a double-whammy...read more.
