Women's History Month

New York City welcomed Gertrude Elion into the world in 1918 on a freezing January night. She was the child of European immigrants who encouraged her to get a good education. Gertrude attended public school in the Bronx, and when it came time to choose a major for high school, she thought of her beloved grandfather. He had spent lots of time with her and her brother when they were small, and she stayed with him until he passed away of stomach cancer. She decided on chemistry, saying, "I had no specific bent toward science until my grandfather died of cancer. I decided nobody should suffer that much."

Elion started at Hunter College in 1933, the year her grandfather died. The stock market had crashed...

Maria Skłodowska was born the youngest child of teachers in Warsaw, Poland. Family fortunes were not great, and Maria lost her mother at age twelve. Maria had to work as a tutor and governess to help finance her sister's education. Later, she was able to study in Paris at the Sorbonne with her sister's support. She also took courses in secret from the Floating University, an underground educational institution in politically-turbulent Poland that educated women, and later also men. Determined to work and make progress in her chosen field of science, Maria studied and practiced physics and chemistry - subjects her father had taught.
In 1894, Marie earned her second degree - this one in mathematics, and met...

Breast Cancer Patients Report Better Quality of Life, Less Side Effects
Would you rather have five weeks or three weeks of radiation treatments? How about less total radiation to your breast? Throw in better quality of life, better satisfaction with your body image, and effective prevention of a breast cancer recurrence. That's what researchers found at the START (Standardisation of Breast Radiotherapy) Trials.
This new schedule of radiation for breast cancer is called hypofractionated radiation. Each dose of radiation was higher than the standard now used for external beam radiation. Patients were given fewer radiation treatments, saving them time, travel, disruption of schedule, and cost. When researchers surveyed the patients in the START Trials, they asked the women about their person...

Your clinical breast exam starts with a visual exam, just like your breast self exam. Take time to discuss your breast health concerns and ask questions. A clinical breast exam helps you and your doctor keep an eye on any changes in your breasts and nipples. (Source: About.com Breast Cancer)

Postmenopausal women who have been diagnosed with HER2 positive, estrogen receptor sensitive breast cancer can now take advantage of a drug combination just approved by the FDA. Tykerb (lapatinib) and Femara (letrozole) are not new drugs for breast cancer, but using the combination of these to treat advanced breast cancer has just been studied. Results of the study showed that women with HER2, ER positive metastatic breast cancer had almost triple the survival rates of women treated with only Femara. When combined, Tykerb and Femara extended the lives of patients by 35 weeks, as compared to 13 weeks on Femara alone.
When you think about Femara, you may consider it mostly as the drug that postmenopausal women can take after primary treatment for breast cancer. Femara blocks aromatase, preve...

Jennifer Lyon, 37, a contestant on Survivor: Palau, has passed away after a five-year fight with breast cancer. Lyon finished the reality TV show in fourth place, but kept many friends among the other contestants. The show wrapped up in May 2005, and in August of that year, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She had noticed a breast lump as early as the summer of 2004, when she was just 33, but since she had no health insurance, and the lump wasn't changing, she let it go.
Lyon had worked as a nanny, a tough job in itself, but said that, "Survivor has helped me in every sense of the word." Through her double mastectomy and reconstruction, her older sister Kim and Survivor alumni stood by her, Coby Archa even shaving his head in s...

Phytochemicals In Pomegranates: Helpful for Breast Cancer?
Pomegranates are an ancient fruit that's making a comeback as a great anticancer food. Ellagitannins from pomegranates transform into ellagic acid during digestion. Since ellagic acid is a natural aromatase inhibitor, consuming pomegranates or using pomegranate extracts may slow down the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
Research published in Cancer Prevention Research showed that, in lab tests, pomegranate extracts inhibit aromatase, an enzyme linked to the development of estrogen-responsive breast cancer. Aromatase helps your body produce estrogen, the hormone involved in 80% of all cases of breast cancer. When pomegranate ellagitannins suppress aromatase levels, breast cancer cells hav...

In 2003, the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) sought to reassure women that using birth control pills would not raise their risk for breast cancer. NCI also told women that having an abortion was not a risk factor for breast cancer. Now it turns out that a study published in April 2009 by Jessica Dolle and other researchers of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center shows just the opposite: oral contraception (OCs) is linked with an increased risk for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in women who are 45 years old and younger. The research paper, "Risk factors for triple-negative breast cancer in women under the age of 45 years," was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
Breast cancer grows in the dark, low-oxygen, sealed environment of your body. It is usually removed with surgery and treated with chemotherapy and radiation. But medical lasers may be able to shed some targeted light on a new treatment for breast cancer. Scientists at Virginia Tech have been working with researchers at Canadian company Theralase to test a combination of photodynamic compounds (PDCs) and medical lasers on breast cancer cells. Not yet tested on people, the labs test results of the laser and PDC combination looks very exciting. Roger Dumoulin-White, President and CEO of Theralase announced that in-vitro testing of Theralase photodynamic compounds caused the destruction of breast cancer cells. Teresa Heinz Kerry and Elizabeth Edwards now have more in common than being part of the 2004 presidential campaign. While John Kerry and John Edwards ran for office, Elizabeth discovered a lump in her breast and was eventually treated for metastatic breast cancer. Nine years later, Teresa Heinz Kerry, heiress to the Heinz ketchup fortune, has announced that she has breast cancer.
Kerry, 71, said that her lump was detected during a routine screening mammogram. "The cancer was detected at an early stage thanks to a mammogram and the work of a remarkable physician who insisted on investigating beyond what the mammogram could show," said Kerry. Stage one breast cancer was found in both breasts, for which Kerry had lumpectomies. After surger...

I think we may have a lot to look forward to in 2010. Research is producing less invasive surgical techniques such as laser ablation for fibroadenomas, new drugs for Triple Negative Breast Cancer called PARP inhibitors, and drugs will be delivered with nanoparticle technology that seeks out and destroys tumor cells without harming healthy tissue. Ten years ago, these things may have seemed like a dream.
Cancer treatments may move more in the direction of personalized medicine, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. My hope is that diseases such as breast cancer will be caught at very early stages, then accurately imaged and ge...

There she was, floating in a pink cloud of chiffon and feathers, wearing her official tiara and sneakers. Wait - do fairies wear sneakers? Well, René Bowditch, also known as the Good Health Fairy of Beyond Boobs, gets around a lot, so sneakers are de rigueur. Where do you find the Good Health Fairy? Well, I met her at the 32nd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS). Wand in hand and a magical smile on her radiant face, she attracted smiles from everyone around.
René Bowditch is a seven-year breast cancer survivor, patient advocate, instructor at the William and Mary Law School, and co-founder of Beyond Boobs. She was in the role of Good Health Fairy when she met Mary Beth Gibson at a retreat for breast cancer survivors. Together, they st...

Even if you haven't dealt with HER2 positive breast cancer, you've probably heard of the drug Herceptin or the movie "Living Proof" about Dr. Dennis Slamon and his work with breast cancer patients. Dr. Slamon is one of the rock stars of breast cancer research. Herceptin, a targeted biological therapy, was developed by Dr. Slamon and a team of researchers, and was tested on women with HER2 breast cancer in clinical trials. I watched as he presented his latest research at the 2009 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, in a vast hall with his image projected on a dozen huge screens that were viewed by a standing-room-only crowd.
Herceptin was FDA approved for treatment of HER2 positive breast cancer in 1998, and has saved and extend...

Watch what you drink at those holiday parties! New research has found a link between having three or more drinks a week and breast cancer recurrence. While three or four drinks a week may sound fairly tame, the Life After Cancer Epidemiology (LACE) Study found that for women who were breast cancer survivors, the risk of recurrence jumped to 34% with only modest drinking.
The study, led by Marilyn Kwan, was funded by the National Cancer Institute, and presented at the 31st annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The LACE Study also determined that women who had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and were postmenopausal, overweight, or obese had an even greater risk of recurrence if they drank three or more servings of alcohol each week. Loneliness and social isolation aren't good for you, for many reasons. But recent research shows that coupled with stress, it may triple your risk of breast cancer.
Picture yourself living in an inner-city neighborhood with frequent crime, sirens wailing on a regular basis, and fatal shootings happening to young people just two doors down. You might not get out often, and when you do, you're on guard all the time. Here's a different picture: you're at home full-time, caring for children, elderly people, or a disabled person. You have few options for respite, and no time for friends (or yourself!) Perhaps you live on silk stocking row in the nicest house on the block, but because you're new in town, you don't yet have any friends or social circle. All three...

When the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released its new guidelines for breast screening in November, they included some remarks about the value of breast self-exams and clinical breast exams. The USPSTF said that women of any age should not be taught to do breast self-exams, but they did not forbid BSE for women or men. The USPSTF also said that clinical breast exams won't be required before screening mammograms, because CBE appears to add no benefit to the information gained from a mammogram.
Many of you wrote in comments about finding your own lump before the age of 50, which is the new age at which the USPSTF recommends starting screening mammography. You used breast self-exams and mammograms to find these problems, ...

The new guidelines for breast screening, released on Monday by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, have been causing confusion, division, outrage, and much discussion. Health professionals, breast cancer support organizations, breast cancer survivors, and health journalists have been speaking out on the recommendation to move screening mammograms from age 40 to age 50. Emotions have been running high, and the barrage of commentary is generating a fog of confusion and misunderstanding about mammography guidelines in general.
The Task Force based its study on traditional film mammography - but most radiology clinics now use digital mammography. In the report explaining their recommendations, the Task Force rated digital mammograms as having "insufficient dat...

Veterans' Day is being celebrated today, but after the mass shooting at Ft. Hood, and other events going on this week, my thoughts are circling around our veterans and what they may face during military service and after. My father, Ben Simons, signed up with the SeaBees when he was just days away from his 18th birthday. The son of hard-working people who grew up in the dustbowl of Oklahoma, Dad was determined to join up and make a difference - and come home to a better life. He spent almost three years in the South Pacific with the SeaBees, got married to my mother when he returned, and went to college on the G.I. Bill. He became a civil engineer, and to this day still has a fine eye for lines, dimensions, and well-built roads an...

First it was just bottled water in those bisphenol A (BPA) plastic bottles. We were told not to drink water that "smelled like plastic" or that had sat in sun-warmed bottles. They told us that the BPA in hard plastics could cause prostate and breast cancers, diabetes and heart disease, as well as reproductive problems. BPA is everywhere: baby bottles, toys, and packaging for some microwaveable foods. So now we use BPA-free bottles, toys, and nuke our food in glass containers. That's good!

But what if your food is already tainted with BPA plastic? Well, next time you look into a can of beans, soup, tomatoes, or baby formula, check out the inside of the metal can. If it has a white coating on the inner surface, you may be seeing BPA right in there with your food. Now, aside from heating a c...

President Obama has changed the policy that allows federal prosecutors to pursue those who sell and use medical marijuana, when the state laws permit. At present, only 14 U.
