More and more doctors are prescribing multiple psychiatric drugs to their patients, including combinations with unknown efficacy and side effects, according to a new study.

Researchers from the department of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and New York State Psychiatric Institute studied physicians' prescribing patterns, beginning in 1996, looking at a range of medicines including antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and sedatives.

The study authors found that antidepressants were the most commonly prescribed medications, while the most common combinations were antidepressants combined with either another antidepressant, a sedative or a mood stabilizer.

During the study period, the number of office visits where two or more drugs were prescribed jumped from about 43% ...

While many look forward to Daylight Saving Time and having more light at the end of the day, others, especially those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), may find themselves slipping back into depression at this time of year.
SAD, according to experts, is caused by a disturbance in our circadian rhythm. Light entering into the eye controls this rhythm; but, during the winter months when days are shorter we may not be exposed to sufficient light during the morning hours, throwing our circadian rhythm off-balance and creating the symptoms of SAD (depression, fatigue and a craving for sweets).
For those with SAD, the longer days of spring bring relief from depression. The arrival of Daylight Saving Time, however, may cause a temporary return of these symptoms as you are forced to once...

A combination of sertraline (Zoloft) plus naltrexone may help depressed alcoholics stop drinking better than either treatment alone, says a new study.

In a 14-week study of 170 patients, University of Pennsylvania researchers found that 54% of the patients who received the combination treatment were able to stop drinking, compared to 21-28% of those who received placebo, Zoloft only or naltrexone only.

Those who received the combination treatment also were able to go longer without a relapse (61 days vs. 15 days)

"When depression and alcohol dependence occur together," wrote the researchers, "each condition has a negative influence on the outcome of the other, so not only does this pairing of illnesses affect a lot of patients, it also makes the individual disorders worse. Combining s...

According to a new study, small talk is great, but meaningful conversation is what connects us to people and makes us happier.

For the study, researcher Matthias Mehl and his team equipped 79 college men and women with with a portable device called an electronically activated recorder (EAR), which periodically recorded bits of conversation as the participants went through their daily routines. Every 12.5 minutes a 30 second sample of sound was recorded. The sampling went on for a period of four days, acquiring more than 23,000 recordings (about 300 per participant).

Mehl and his team then listened to the recordings, classifying them as either small talk (e.g. "What do you have there? Popcorn? Yummy!) or substantive (e.g. "She fell in love with your dad? So, did they get divorced soon aft...

This study is the first to identify a statistical link between these antidepressants and cataracts in humans, although previous animal studies had shown that SSRIs could increase cataract risk.

The authors note that this study does not prove causation, only that there is a statistical link between the two. They further note that the study was unable to account for smoking - which is a known risk factor for cataracts - and additional studies are needed to confirm their findings.

The authors do not believe that this study should be cause for concern. "When you look at the trade-off of these drugs," said lead author Dr. Mahyar Etminan, "the benefits of treating depression - which can be life-threatening - still outweigh the risk of developing cataracts, which are treatable and relatively be...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients with symptoms of excessive sleepiness have the greatest risk of depression, says a new study, and should be screened for this condition.

Dr. Stacey Ishman and a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University evaluated 56 consecutive patients with OSA aged 27-74 who visited a clinic for treatment and compared them with 51 patients who did not have OSA.

Overall, significantly more OSA patients met the criteria for depression (29%) than those who did not have OSA (8%). The severity of their sleep apnea was a good predictor of the severity of their depression symptoms, however, their depression symptoms did not predict the severity of the sleep apnea.

The patients' scores on a scale measuring the severity of their depression symptoms correlated with t...

Obesity appears to be linked with an increased risk of depression, say researchers, and the link also works in the other direction.

Floriana S. Luppino and a team of researchers at Leiden University Medical Center and GGZ Rivierduinen, Leiden, the Netherlands, analyzed the results of 15 previous studies involving 58,745 participants which examined the relationship between depression and obesity over time.

"We found bidirectional associations between depression and obesity: obese persons had a 55% increased risk of developing depression over time, whereas depressed persons had a 58% increased risk of becoming obese. The association between depression and obesity was stronger than the association between depression and overweight, which reflects a dose-response gradient," said the authors....

Belief in a higher power may actually improve a patient's response to medication, says a Rush University Medical Center research team.

A total of 136 adults with major depression or bipolar depression at inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities in Chicago participated in the study. They were surveyed after admission and eight weeks later using three standardized instruments for assessing intensity, severity and depth of depression as well as feelings of hopelessness and spiritual satisfaction.

The researchers found that those patients who scored in the top third of the Religious Well-Being Scale were 75% more likely to respond to their medication. They further found that these improvements were not tied to how hopeful the patients felt and appeared to be linked only to their perce...

If a mother takes an antidepressant during pregnancy, her child may experience delays in certain aspect of his development, according to Dr. Lars Henning Pederson and his research team at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.

Pederson's team identified 400 women who had taken antidepressants during pregnancy, as well as 500 women who were depressed but took no medication. Based upon the women's own reports, they then compared how many children hit specific developmental milestones - such as sitting up, following the direction of sounds with their eyes, expressing irritation and walking.

The researchers found that, at six months, the only differences between the two groups of babies was in their gross movements. Babies who were exposed to antidepressants during the second and third trime...

"We tested acupuncture as a standalone treatment," said study author Rachel Manber, a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, "and the results are very positive."
For the study, Manber and her team recruited 150 pregnant women who were diagnosed with major depressive disorder. All study participants were between 12 and 30 weeks pregnant.
The women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: depression-specific acupuncture, control acupuncture or massage. The depression-specific acupuncture was a protocol specially designed for the study while the control acupuncture involved needling acupuncture points not known to be associated with depression rel...

Lead author Julie A. Mennella, Ph.D. and her team studied 300 children between the ages of 5 and 12 by having them taste five different levels of table sugar dissolved in water and then asking them which level of sweetness they preferred. The also asked the children questions to ascertain whether they had symptoms of depression and information about familial alcohol abuse was obtained from their mothers.

Contrary to popular thinking, depression and cognitive difficulties may not always go hand in hand, say UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.
In their study, the researchers examined 35 studies published between 1991 and 2007 which investigated links between depression severity and impairments in various aspects of cognition, such as processing speed, attention, memory, language ability and executive function (cognitive abilities that control and regulate other abilities and behaviors).
Processing speed - one's ability to take in information, process and act upon it quickly - was found to be most often affected by depression, the researchers found. However, there wasn't as a clear a link between depression and deficits in other aspects of cognitive function, such as attention, concen...

Breast cancer patients who are taking Tamoxefin to prevent a recurrence of the disease should not take the antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine), a new study suggests. Women in the study who took both drugs together had a greater than average risk of dying from breast cancer.

The study looked at medical records for 2,430 breast cancer patients who had been taking tamoxefin. About 1 out 4 of these women had also taken Paxil; and, on average, about 41% of the time that the women were taking tamoxefin they were also taking Paxil.

The researchers found that there was about one extra death from breast cancer for every 20 women who had taken the two drugs together.

The researchers believe that the risk of death from breast cancer was increased because Paxil interferes with the cancer-preventing a...

Various news outlets are reporting that internationally renowned fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead in his London apartment Thursday morning.
Although no official cause of death has been released yet, it is believed that 40-year-old McQueen took his own life. The UK media organization, Sky News, has reported that McQueen was found hanged in his apartment and that local police would not be treating the death as suspicious.
According to celebrity gossip blogger, Perez Hilton, McQueen's mother, Joyce McQueen, passed away just last week and he lost a good friend, Isabella Blow, to suicide just three years ago. Some are speculating that grief over these deaths could have played a role in McQueen's suicide.

Depressed children who were abused before the age of five have physiological differences created by that abuse, says a new article appearing in the journal Child Development.

According to the article, children who experience mistreatment - whether it is physical, sexual or emotional - grow up under a great deal of stress. Cortisol is a hormone which the body produces to help regulate stress, but, when stress is chronic and overloads the system, cortisol can reach either very high or very low levels, damaging health.

The researchers studied more than 500 low-income children between the ages of 7 and 13, about half of whom had been abused or neglected in some way. They found that high levels of depression occurred more frequently in those children who had been abused early in life, compare...

According to a newly published study, mothers who were depressed during pregnancy were four times more likely to have children who exhibited antisocial behavior during their teen years.

The study included 120 inner-city teens and their mothers. The mothers were interviewed while pregnant, following giving birth and when the children were 4, 11 and 16 years old.

In addition to the link between maternal depression and antisocial teens, the researchers found that women who were prone to aggressive and disruptive behavior during their teens were more likely to become depressed during their pregnancies, which shows, say the researchers, that a mother's history predicts her children's behavior.

Teens with suicidal thoughts and elevated depression had a stronger and faster reduction in their symptoms when treated using family therapy as opposed to standard treatment in the community, according to a new report in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

The researchers studied 66 children between the ages of 12 to 17 who sought treatment in primary care settings or emergency rooms with severe suicidal thinking and depression symptoms.

Parental participation in the study was required, with parents being viewed "not as the problem, but as the curative medicine," according to study author Guy S.
According to a new study scheduled to appear in the February issue of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, women who take SSRI antidepressants may experience delayed lactation after giving birth and may need additional support if they chose to breastfeed.
"The breasts are serotonin-regulated glands," said study co-author Dr. Nelson Horseman of the University of Cincinnati, which means that "the breasts' ability to secrete milk at the right time is closely related to the body's production and regulation of the hormone serotonin." Commonly used antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil all belong to a class of drugs called SSRIs, which affect serotonin re-uptake, and might also affect serotonin regulation in the breast.

Patients who receive the antidepressant escitalopram (Lexapro) appeared to do better in recovering their thinking, learning and memory skills than those who took a placebo or who participated in problem-solving therapy, according to an article published in the February issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

According to background information in the article, there is growing interest in therapies which can be administered in the first few months after a stroke, which is the time period when there is the most spontaneous recovery of lost motor and cognitive skills. Antidepressants are believed to be potentially helpful to stroke patients in their recovery because they stimulate production of substances essential for nerve cell growth.

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center have identified three key factors in children's behavior which can lead to social rejection, and, in turn, make children more prone to academic failure, dropping out of school, depression or anxiety and experimentation with drugs.

Dr. Clark McKown and his colleagues at the Rush Neurobehavioral Center observed two groups of children. One was a random sample of 158 children in the Chicago school system. The other was a random sample of 126 clinic-referred children.

They found in their study that some children have a difficult time picking up on non-verbal or social cues. For example, they may not notice when someone's shoulders slump in disappointment or hear the change in pitch in their voice when they are excited.

Secondly, they found that s...

Even after receiving treatment with antidepressants, depressed workers costs employers more in short-term disability and absenteeism, says a report in the February Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Suellen Curkendall of Thomson Reuters Healthcare and her team of researchers used insurance claims and employee health and productivity databases to examine the relationship between antidepressant treatment and productivity costs.

What they found in their study was that depressed employees are about twice as likely to use short-term disability leave, compared to workers who were not depressed. Those workers with severe depression were three times as likely.

Deficits in productivity were significant, according to the report, with short-term disability costs of about $1,000 fo...

According to a press release from the University of Michigan Health System, the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health recently asked almost 1,100 parents across the U.S. to rate their children's schools on how well they support children with emotional, behavioral or family problems.

According to the survey, 37% of parents gave their primary schools an A grade for their support of children with behavioral issues, while 34% gave them an A for their support of kids with emotional or family issues. In addition, 22% of parents gave their secondary schools an A grade for their support of children with behavioral, emotional or family problems.

In overall education, 52% of parents gave primary schools an A and 38% gave secondary schools an A.

A recent look at Google search trends indicates that more and more Americans may be having suicidal thoughts.

Kelly Bush, director of the Lee Drake Foundation, found a troubling trend when doing online research for their upcoming Records for Awareness program. When searching various terms related to suicide, Bush found that the phrase "suicidal thoughts" was searched about 5500 times per day. "It wasn't the number of searchers that caught my eye," said Bush, "It was the increase over time that bothered me." Bush found that there was a 488% growth in searches for this keyword phrase between January 2004 and January 2010. Bush further noted that the rise seemed to coincide with America's growing economic woes, with a increase of a 323% occurring during the last six months alone.

The study results, which were presented by Dr. Paul Walters of the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London, at the annual meeting of the North American Primary Care Research Group, were based upon a longitudinal cohort study including 11,275 asthma patients with no history of depression and an equal number of control subjects matched for age and sex from the United Kingdom's General Practice Research Database.

The presence of of an excess of a particular type of serotonin receptor in the brain may be the reason that antidepressants fail to help half of those who use them, says a new study from Columbia University Medical Center researchers.

The study, which was done using mice, is the first to link the number of receptor sites and antidepressant treatment and may lead to finding ways to help patients who do not currently respond to antidepressants.

Most antidepressants, according to study author Rene Hen, a professor of pharmacology at the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Columbia University, work by increasing the amount of serotonin made by cells (called raphe neurons) deep in the brain. But, if too many 1A receptor sites are present on these neurons it sets up a negative feedbac...

A team of neurosurgeons at Heidelberg University Hospital and psychiatrists at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany have, for the first time, successfully treated a patient with severe depression using a technique called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), according to a case study reported in the journal Biological Psychiatry.
The patient was a 64-year-old woman who had suffered from depression since the age of 18. Previous treatment with medication and electroconvulsive therapy had failed to help her; but, thanks to the DBS procedure, she is now completely symptom-free for the first time in years.

This article is indeed making light of a very real condition. No matter how moving this movie may be, it can not compare to the pain of clinical depression. To suggest that fans of any popular movie are "depressed" or "suicidal" simply to write a sensational story is a slap in the face to those who actually do have depression. While I don't doubt that what these fans are feeling is a real phenomenon, I think it's irresponsible of the article's author to imply it in any way resembles clinical depression.

The benefits obtained from antidepressants may vary according to the severity of the patient's depression, says a new article appearing in the January 6, 2010 issue of JAMA, and they may provide little benefit at all for those with mild to moderate depression.

Jay C. Fournier of the University of Pennsylvania and his colleagues conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the benefit of antidepressant treatment vs. placebo across a wide range of initial symptom severity in patients with depression, combining data from six large-scale, placebo-controlled randomized trials including 718 adult patients.

The authors found that the efficacy of antidepressant treatment varied considerably and was dependent upon the severity of symptoms. True drug effects (defined as an advantage of antidepressant tre...

More and more U.S. patients are being prescribed multiple psychotropic medications - including antidepressants and antipsychotic medications - according to a report in the January issue of Archives of General Psychiatriy.
According to background information provided in the report, there is some evidence that combining different types of psychotropic medications may be beneficial for patients. For example, if a patient does not respond completely to a particular antidepressant, they may respond better if given a second antidepressant with a different mode of action.
In order to examine trends in this phenomena of prescribing multiple psychotropic medications, Ramin Mojtabai of Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and Mark Olafson of Columbia University Medical Center ...

Many adults in the U.S. with major depression either do not receive treatment or the treatment they do receive is not adequate, according to a report in the January issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. The report further states that certain ethnic and racial groups are even less likely than other groups to receive adequate care for their depression.
Hector M. Gonzales and his colleagues at Wayne State University in Detroit analyzed data from the National Institutes of Mental Health's Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys, which combined three nationally representative studies. During these studies, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 15,762 adults between 2001 and 2003.
Of those surveyed, 8.3% had major depression, including 8% of Mexican Americans, 11.8% of Puerto Ric...

Never do today what you can put off for tomorrow. Better yet, never put off 'til tomorrow what you can avoid altogether!
I don't know who coined these phrases, but they must have been a depressive. The symptoms that we face, such as fatigue and hopelessness, make it so easy to say to ourselves, "I'll just put this off until tomorrow when I feel better". Before we know it, that deadline is creeping up on us and we're starting to panic. What's the best way to deal with panic? Hide your head in the sand and hope it goes away! Not really, but procrastination an easy habit to fall into and as the panic mounts, so does the depression. The more depressed we get, the more we avoid reality. Read More

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes almost an involuntary response. If we consider this habit to be undesirable then we may label it a "bad habit". People spend countless hours and dollars each year attempting to break these bad habits and often do not have any success. Why? Because there is no magic bullet. Change is hard work and there is no short cut to achieving it. The steps a person needs to take, however, can be very simply outlined. To effect a change in habits, one needs to bring the action back into the realm of consciousness and regain the ability to make choices. Read More

While the holidays are commonly thought of as a time of joy and celebration, they may be a time of a time of sadness and isolation for the elderly, especially if they have lost loved ones or are experiencing health or financial difficulties.
According to the American Geriatrics Society, there are some things that seniors can do combat holiday depression.

Get out and about. Ask friends and relatives for help in getting to parties and events or invite them to your home.
Volunteer. Volunteer work can lift your mood by taking your mind off your own troubles. Contact local schools, religious organizations or charities to learn about opportunities.
Don't drink too much alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant and can make you feel even worse.

One recent evening I was watching my neighbors put up a dazzling display of lights on their home. Judging by the wattage being consumed they had more Christmas spirit than anyone around. Suddenly I heard a barrage of angry shouts from the mother. The lights were malfunctioning and she was upset. I said to myself "something is definitely wrong with this picture". Although the Christmas holidays are supposed to be a time of peace, joy, and love, all too often we spend it angry, stressed, and blue. Why does this happen and how can we avoid it? I have a few tips to share that I think can help you have a much happier holiday.

Teenagers who smoke marijuana daily may be damaging their brains and making themselves more prone to depression and anxiety as adults, according to a new study out of McGill University.

The researchers at the University found that when adolescent and adult lab rats were exposed to the active ingredient in marijuana for 20 days, only the adolescent rats were adversely affected.

Changes observed in the rats included a decrease in a substance in the brain called serotonin, which is believed to play a role in depression. Increases in another substance called norepinephrine, which has been associated with anxiety, were also noted.

Although the study was carried out on rats, study author Gabriella Gobbi said the results could be extrapolated to humans.

The results suggest, according to Gobbi...

Older women who take antidepressants have a small, but statistically significant, increased risk of having a stroke or dying, compared to women who do not take antidepressants, says a new study.

The study compared six-year data on 5,500 postmenopausal women who began taking antidepressants after enrolling in the Women's Health Initiative trial to data on over 130,000 women who did not take an antidepressant.

The researchers found that women taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - a class of drugs including the popular antidepressants Celexa, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft - had a 45% increase in risk for stroke and a 32% increase in risk for dying from any cause. Similar results were found for another class of antidepressants called tricyclics.

Ever notice how a gray, rainy day makes you feel gloomy and tired, but a sunny day can leave you feeling cheerful and energized? Well, there's a scientific reason for this. Insufficient exposure to sunlight has been associated with low levels of melatonin and serotonin, abnormalities of cortisol, carbohydrate craving, weight gain, and sleep disturbance. Some of you out there may have also noticed that you find a seasonal fluctuation in your moods, feeling depressed in the winter months. Take a look at your calendar and you'll soon see why. Each year on June 21 we experience the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. With our longest hours of sunlight smack dab in the middle of summer it's no wonder we're happier this time of year! After this date, however, the days progressively ge...

According to a report in the December issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, young adults with higher blood levels of lead appear to be more likely to also have major depression and panic disorders.

Maryse F. Bouchard, Ph.D., M.Sc., of the Université de Montreal, Canada, and Harvard School of Public Health and her colleagues examined data from 1,987 adults between the ages of 20 and 39 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004. The participants underwent a diagnostic interview to identify depression, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. They also had a blood sample collected and analyzed for lead.

Patients taking an antidepressant may experience changes in their personality separate from the alleviation of their depression, according to a report in the December issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
In the background material provided in the article, the authors write that two personality traits - neuroticism and extraversion - have been related to depression risk. Those with depression tend to be more neurotic and less extraverted. People who are neurotic tend to experience negative emotions and emotional instability, while those who are extraverted tend to be socially outgoing and have a tendency to experience positive emotions. Both are traits which are believed to be linked to the brain's serotonin system.

After giving birth, about 30% to 80% of women will experience "baby blues," feeling mild depression, weepiness, irritability, fatigue and moodiness. These mood changes occur in response to the hormonal changes that follow childbirth and rapidly resolve within hours or days.
About 10% of women, though, will go through postpartum major depression (PMD), experiencing more severe, lasting symptoms. Good self-care and support from family and friends can help many women, although others will require treatment with medication and/or therapy.
Steps you can take to prevent postpartum depression include:

Elderly persons who use psychotropic medications such as antidepressants and sedatives may be at greater risk for falls, according to a report in the November 23, 2009 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

This finding is significant, says the authors, because more than 30% of seniors will fall at least once a year, and falls and their complications are the fifth-leading cause of death among the elderly in the developed world.

John C. Woolcott, M.A., of University of British Columbia and Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcomes Sciences, Vancouver, Canada, and his associates analyzed 22 previous studies involving 79,081 participants older than age 60 and evaluated nine drug types: antihypertensive agents; diuretics; beta-blockers; sedatives and hypnotics; neuroleptics and antipsychoti...

A new drug called flibanserin is being hailed as a potential "Viagra-like drug for women," according to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and the University of Ottawa in Canada.

Flibanserin, which was originally developed as an antidepressant, did a very poor job in treating depression, says principle investigator for North America John M. Thorp, Jr., but it is effective in treating low libido, a common problem among depressed women.

Thorp, Elaine E. Jolly, overall principle investigator, and their colleagues pooled data from four clinical trials of flibanserin conducted in the U.S., Canada and Europe, including a total of 1,946 pre-menopausal women aged 18 and older who had been randomly selected to receive either the drug or placebo for 2...

Transcendental Meditation may be an effective way to reduce depression, anxiety, blood pressure and anger among college students at risk for high blood pressure, says a new study set to appear in the December 2009 issue of the American Journal of Hypertension.
The study was conducted at American University using 298 college students randomly placed in either a Transcendental Meditation group or a wait-list control group over a three-month period. A subset of 159 students considered to be at risk for high blood pressure were analyzed separately. At baseline and again after three months, blood pressure, psychological distress and coping ability were evaluated for this group.
Among the students at risk for high blood pressure, significant improvements in blood pressure, psychological distress...

Depression in teens could be reduced, say researchers, by something simple, yet often lacking: a good night's sleep.
Teenagers should be getting about nine hours of sleep per night, according to experts, but few do. In fact, the average teen only gets about seven hours of sleep per night. While in the past it was believed that poor sleep was simply a byproduct of depression, thinking on this matter is changing. Chronic sleep deprivation may actually be a cause of depression, experts say.
Allison Harvey, a clinical psychologist at UC Berkeley and her team at the university's Sleep and Psychological Disorders Laboratory have plans to research this problem by recruiting 60 middle and high school students to discover if more sleep may indeed be a valid way to prevent or treat teen depression.

Women are at somewhat greater risk of suffering from depression following a stroke than are men, according to a new review of the existing medical literature.
Brittany Poynter and colleagues from the University of Toronto examined 56 studies related to stroke and depression, consisting of more than 75,000 people, 12,000 of which were women. The time between the stroke and the onset of depression in these people ranged from between under two weeks to 15 years.
In women, rates of depression after stroke ranged from about 6% to 78%, while in men rates ranged from 4.7% to 65%.
This finding is significant, according to Poynter, because depression after a stroke is associated with greater disability, reduced quality of life and an increased risk of death.
The authors say these higher rates of de...

In a survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), respondents reported that they do not believe the know much about depression. They are, however, very aware of the risks of not getting treated.
The survey included responses from members of the general public who do not know anyone with depression, caregivers of adults with depression and adults living with the condition. It was conducted online between September 29 and October 7, 2009 and included 1,015 people who did not know anyone with depression, 263 caregivers and 513 with depression.
Some of the survey's other findings:

Seventy-one percent of the survey takers believe they know some symptoms of depression, while 39% reported that they did not know many or any at all.

According to Ohio State researchers, pregnant women who are depressed may be more prone to severe flu symptoms if they catch the seasonal flu.

The researchers based their conclusions upon 22 pregnant women who had received a seasonal flu shot. Those with significant depression symptoms had a stronger inflammatory response to the flu shot than those who were not depressed. These findings suggest, say the researchers, that a depressed pregnant woman's immune system behaves differently, possibly causing them to have more serious symptoms if they do contract the flu.

"Inflammatory responses to vaccination do no harm, are mild, and typically go away within a few days. But an extended inflammatory response to vaccination, such as the one seen in women with the most depressive symptoms, isn't e...

Women with a history of depression who used psychiatric medications had triple the risk of giving birth to a premature baby, according to a study in the September/October issue of Women's Health Issues.
Amelia Gavin and her team at the University of Washington, University of Michigan and Michigan State University, found that a combination of medication use and depression - either before or during pregnancy - were strongly associated with delivery before the 35th week of pregnancy.
The researchers also found that, without medication use, elevated levels of depression symptoms at midpregnancy and history of depression did not pose the same increased risk of preterm delivery.
At this point it is not clear, however, whether the medications are the direct cause of preterm delivery or whether me...

An analysis of national data on 2,130 mothers conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine found that working mothers were less likely to receive adequate treatment for their depression.

A possible reason suggested for why these women do not receive the treatment they need is that they work long hours, making it difficult for them to find the time to seek help.

It was also suggested by the report that, because of women's difficulties in finding time to seek help, the workplace would be a useful location to provide depression intervention. "Services like employee-assistance programs can help these mothers get screened and treated, even if they are unable to visit a provider or a mental health professional in the health-care setting," said study co-au...

According to background information provided in a new paper by Northwestern University researchers, over half of antidepressants fail to provide relief to depression sufferers. Their research seems to indicate it may be because what we believe about what triggers depression is entirely wrong.
Eva Redei and her team used rats which were genetically engineered to become severely depressed. They isolated specific genes in this group of rats and compared them with four genetically different groups of rats which had been exposed to chronic stress for two weeks. When they studied gene changes that increased or decreased in particular brain regions, they found that the genetically different rats that had been exposed to stress did not have any significant overlap in their genetic changes with the...

In a study comparing light therapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), University of Vermont researcher Kelly Rohan found that CBT may be most effective at preventing future episodes of the disorder.

Rohan randomized 69 people with SAD, a form of depression which occurs during the fall and winter months, into one of four groups: light therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, a combination of the two or a wait-list control group.
According to a report in The Philadelphia Enquirer, GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of the antidepressant Paxil, must pay $2.5 million to settle a claim that the drug caused severe heart defects in 3-year-old Bensalem, PA boy.

The verdict is the first in 600 similar cases, which allege that Glaxo knew Paxil causes birth defects, but hid that knowledge in order to protect their profits.

Paxil generated about $942 million in sales last year, accounting for 2.1% of Glaxo's total revenue.

The boy's mother, Michelle David, claimed that her son, Lyam Kilker, suffered from life-threatening heart defects because she had used the drug during her pregnancy. There was no previous history of heart defects in her family, according to David.

By a 10-2 margin, the jury found Glaxo had "negligently fail...

Have you ever noticed how a gray, rainy day makes you feel gloomy and tired, but a sunny day can leave you feeling cheerful and energized? Well, there's a scientific reason for this. Insufficient exposure to sunlight has been associated with low levels of melatonin and serotonin, carbohydrate craving, weight gain, and sleep disturbance.
Some of you may have also noticed that you find a seasonal fluctuation in your moods, feeling depressed only in the winter months. Take a look at your calendar and you'll soon see why. Each year on June 21 we experience the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. With our longest hours of sunlight in the middle of summer it's no wonder we're happier this time of year. After this date, however, the days progressively get shorter until the winter solsti...
