A new treatment regimen for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative disorders has shown positive results in a recent phase 2 study.

The new protocol called "TADA" (thalidomide, arsenic trioxide, dexamethasone and ascorbic acid) was tested on a group of 28 patients with an average age of 66 years, all who had been previously treated for their bone marrow disease. At the end of almost 6 months, 6 patients (about 20%) had a clinical improvement in their disease.
The courts have decided- there is no reason why some stem cell donors should not be financially compensated, reports the New York Times.

This ruling comes after a non- profit group MoreMarrowDonors.org filed a lawsuit against the federal government, in an attempt to entice more donors to join the National Marrow Donor Program list. The group is interested in offering $3000 to donors in the form of housing allowances, scholarships, or gifts to charity. As a result, they hope that the lives of more patients in need of stem cell transplant, such as leukemia and lymphoma patients, could be saved by a broader unrelated donor list....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Earlier this week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval to a new drug that will make treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) a little easier.

Up until now, ALL patients were treated using asparaginase (Elspar) or pegasparagase (Oncaspar), both of which are enzymes that are derived from the bacteria e.coli. Unfortunately, some patients develop an allergy to these medications over time and their therapy becomes limited as a result....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

In the past, many older (i.e.; greater than age 60) adults with blood cancers did not have allogeneic stem cell transplant as a treatment option. For the most part, this was because of the multiple toxic effects of the high dose chemotherapy required prior to receiving donated stem cells. This, in combination with the increased likelihood of other medical conditions as we age made for poor outcomes....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered a "marker" in blood samples that can detect graft- versus- host disease (GVHD) of the intestines without a biopsy.

GVHD is one of the most fatal complications of allogeneic stem cell transplant. GVHD is caused by the healthy immune system of the stem cell donor attacking the cells of the stem cell recipient (or the "host"). While there are many sites of the body that can be affected by GVHD, the skin , liver, eyes, joints and intestines are among the most common. In fact, for about 30% of patients who have received an allogeneic stem cell transplant for leukemia, lymphoma or other blood disorders, GVHD of the intestine can develop and it is the site that is most resistant to treatment....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, is notoriously difficult to treat once it has begun to show symptoms. In fact, there is no cure for CLL- the goal of treatment is to provide patients with long remission while maintaining the quality of their life. Thanksgiving not only reminds me of all I have to be grateful for, it also gets me thinking about food safety, and all the things we can do to prevent stomach illness during our pre- Christmas culinary workout!...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Our hospital is located in a highly culturally diverse area of the city and our patients come to us in a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds. Working in a place like this, it is not hard to see the "religion" that binds us all together- our human spirituality.
Swedish researchers at Lund University have discovered a new way to separate cells for stem cell transplant that may improve outcomes.

Stem cell transplant is an important treatment method for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, and may offer the only chance for a cure. However, the outcome of the transplant is impacted by the quality of the stem cell product that is infused into the patient. The current method of cell separation which uses apheresis technology, can allow unwelcome cells into the product and potentially provide a poorer quality specimen....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Two of the greatest challenges of stem cell transplant are severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and finding a suitable stem cell donor.

A good deal of research has taken place over the past few years about "haploidentical donors" that is, stem cell transplants which use a "half- matched" donor, such as a recipient's parent, child, or half matched sibling. The benefit of this type of transplant would be an increase in the number of acceptable donors. The major drawback with using donors that are not a full match is severe GVHD....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

FDA has granted fast track approval to Dara BioSciences for their drug KRN5500 which is being used was a treatment for chemotherapy induced neuropathic (nerve) pain (CINP).

KRN5500 is not a narcotic, but it is showing some excellent results in clinical trials. Interestingly, the drug is produced by bacteria called streptomycin alanosinicus. As a result of its effectiveness in relieving pain in patients with CINP, in addition to the extensive need for better options for this common chemotherapy side effect, the FDA will help to speed up the process to getting KRN5500 from the lab into your medicine cabinet....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

I have had many patients tell me over the years that they felt like vampires for all the transfusions of blood products they needed throughout their treatment. With the current youth fascination with the eternal undead, it seems fitting that vampires may be a way to market leukemia and lymphoma awareness. And so Cancer Bites was created....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Like many, I lose my motivation to get outdoors for physical activity when it is hot outside. Fortunately for me, that's my only factor- the heat makes me lazy.

If you have received a diagnosis or treatment for cancer such as leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, you may have more than outdoor heat dragging you down. You could be suffering from cancer related fatigue as well!...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have discovered a way to improve the body's acceptance of donor stem cells after an allogeneic stem cell transplant.

In their study, the scientists extracted stem cells from humans and mice, and reproduced them in a lab setting using a special culture. They discovered that these lab produced stem cells showed a particular protein on their surface they helped them go undetected by the immune system. As a result, they were more likely to be accepted by the transplant recipient and also were able to revive the bone marrow and resume production of healthy blood cells....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Results of a recent study have shown that women who frequently use aspirin, or ASA, have a significantly decreased risk of developing myelogenous leukemias such as CML and AML.

The research showed that women who use aspirin more than once a week were less likely to get these types of leukemia and that the more frequently they took it, the less their risk became. Interestingly, the same research showed that women who take acetaminophen on a regular basis were actually at increased risk of myelogenous leukemia....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

This week, the FDA has released which bugs will be covered by this year's flu shots.

Annually, experts have a look at the influenza trends from the previous year to determine which strains are most likely to affect the population for the upcoming year. Flu vaccines are then manufactured to reflect those high- risk varieties....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Options to preserve fertility following cancer treatment are frequently overlooked during the initial phases of cancer diagnosis.
A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to converse with one of my readers about her experience of stem cell transplant. We discussed some ongoing side effects she was experiencing, some good (no allergies!!) and some bad (graft versus host). Something that really stuck with this reader was how different her donor was from herself and she wondered how they could have been a good match. The donor was of a mixed race heritage and from a small island in the Pacific, whereas the recipient is a caucasian girl from the mainland US. How could their genetics be similar enough for a stem cell match?...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Many people who have received treatment for their blood cancer do not realize that, among other skin side effects, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause an increased sensitivity to the sun. This may cause your skin to burn very easily and can lead to an increased risk of developing skin cancer in the future. Sun sensitivity is often only temporary following chemo, but may be permanent in the areas of your body where you have received radiation...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

The research indicates that patients who have to pay an out of pocket cost of more than $500 were four times more likely to quit their treatment than those with cost sharing of $100 or less....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

According to representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), clinical trials for cancer patients are being limited by rules, regulations and red tape.

Currently, there are rules in place which prevent drug combinations from being used in clinical trials unless all of the medications have individually been approved by the FDA. There are also numerous issues that come into play when medications that are produced by different manufacturers are combined in the same study. These regulations have a strong impact on the ability to test targeted therapies....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

If you haven't done so lately, hug a nurse! May is Oncology Nurse's Month, and the second week in May is Nurse's Week.

As you might have already noticed, nurses play many different roles in the cancer center or clinic. There are nurses that give your chemotherapy, nurses that assess you before you see the hematologist, even nurses that write prescriptions or come to your home! No matter how different each nurse's job might be, there is one thing that remains the same. Nurses take pride in caring for your spirit, emotional health, and family as well as having a great deal of knowledge about disease, treatment and illness management. They are pretty special people- so celebrate with them this Oncology Nurse's Month!...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Research has shown that cancer patients found blogs and forums to be a great place to vent their fears, frustrations, and feelings as well as to help others by sharing their experiences. Bloggers also felt empowered and comforted by being able to provide support and encouragement to others. Because the Internet provides an anonymous venue to communicate, bloggers were more likely to share intimate or sensitive details about their experience....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

A study released in Lancet Oncology this month has shown that giving Bortezomib (Velcade) as an injection into the fatty tissue (subcutaneous) as opposed to the veins may reduce the risk of some side effects. The study showed that while the effectiveness of the myeloma drug was unchanged in relapsed patients, there was a notable decrease in certain side effects such as thrombocytopenia, anemia and peripheral neuropathy. The researchers also indicated that another possible benefit of subcutaneous Velcade is that it could mean patients would be more easily able to receive the drug at home....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Japanese authorities are considering preserving the stem cells of workers at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for later transplant if needed.

The rationale behind this plan is similar to the science behind stem cell transplants for cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. When used as a cancer therapy, patients are given extremely high doses of chemotherapy, with or without radiation to completely eliminate their bone marrow and hopefully their disease. The patient is then given an infusion of stem cells, either collected from themselves or from a donor, to rejuvenate the damaged marrow and allow healthy blood cell formation....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Like many, my husband has recently ventured into the world of finding a new doctor. It's a pretty big decision! He has some health issues, so he wanted someone who was experienced. But, because he has some health issues and would likely have to see this doctor fairly regularly, he wanted someone he could feel comfortable talking to. Finally, he wanted a doctor that was actually taking new patients- a tall order!!...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Canadian health ministers announced this week that they would proceed with the creation of a national cord blood bank, as reported by the Globe and Mail.

Until now, there have been few options for Canadian parents who were interested in preserving their child's umbilical cord blood. You could collect and store the cells in privately run facilities to be used by your own child if they should ever need it. Or you could donate to one of two public donation banks. For the most part, cord blood is discarded after the birth of the child....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Childhood vaccinations have come under fire over the past few years, and have been blamed for causing anything from autism to cancer, and it is certainly a hot button topic as evidenced by the responses to a blog post earlier this month by the Autism Spectrum Disorders guide. For many, even despite the fact that there is no evidence to support a link between vaccinating your children and these conditions, and a obvious benefit to it, immunizations have a negative connotation....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

Earlier this week, I was interested to find a link to an advertisement for menstrual blood banking in my email inbox.Like most women, I am not apt to think of monthly periods as a "miracle" by any stretch of the imagination. But, for the past few years, scientists have been investigating menstrual blood as a source of stem cells. There are some estimates that menstrual blood may contain up to 30 times the number of stem cells found in bone marrow. Now, that would be a miracle! A potentially life saving cell population being flushed away each month....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

I heard a story on the news this morning about how a family in Boston almost missed a chemotherapy appointment as a result of the snowy weather. Firefighters came to the rescue of a two year old leukemia patient and her mom after a tree limb fell on their driveway, blocking them in. The quick thinking mom called 911 and firefighters brought out the heavy equipment to remove the tree, so they could make it to the cancer center on time....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

It has only been about a week since US President Obama signed the Zadroga health care bill, and we are once again reminded of why it is important.

Earlier this week, Roy Chelsen, aged 51, passed away less than a month after undergoing stem cell transplant for myeloma, as reported by the Staten Island Real- Time News. He was a hero, a firefighter who was in the twin towers on September 11 and saved the lives of his colleagues moments before the second tower collapsed....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)

The National Patient Advocate Foundation has called upon Arizona's governor to reinstate Medicaid benefits for nearly 100 patients in need.

In October 2010 Arizona's Medicaid program, The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), made a budget cutting decision to no longer fund certain types of transplants, including allogeneic stem cell transplants for adults. Plus, there are a million things I could do to improve my lifestyle, how to pick just one?
SFW, or Seasonal Financial Woes, seems to have reached epidemic proportions this year. The more I complain about it, the more I hear other people complain about it. Seems like we are all looking for ways to cut back our spending. Maybe it is the holiday festivities (I am really cutting back this year!) or maybe we are all just getting realistic about the debt we accrued when the economy was tough. I don't know the reason, but 'tis the season!...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Lymphoma)
