Alberta has confirmed a second death associated with the H1N1 flu.&nbsp An Edmonton area woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions passed away June 30. It is still not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the middle-aged woman’s death.“I want to express my sympathy to the family at this difficult time,” said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “Alberta, like all jurisdictions across the country, remains vigilant in tracking the progress of the H1N1 virus. The sad and stark reality is that we expect that we will see other deaths associated with H1N1.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Health Services are urging Albertans to report any wild animal bites to their physician since wild mammals such as bats, coyotes and skunks may be rabies carriers. Over the last five years, a number of bats have tested positive for rabies in Alberta. Albertans should avoid any contact with wild animals, such as handling bats. If you see a bat in your home and you are sure no human or pet exposure has occurred, confine the bat to a room by closing all doors and windows leading out of the room except those to the outside. If the bat does not leave, it can be caught once it has landed, using the following precautions: Wear leather work gloves Trap the bat under a small box or coffee can Seal the bat in the can with a piece of cardboard Release t...

Keeping protected from the sun is essential for Albertans this summer as they enjoy time spent outdoors. Whether or not you are hosting backyard barbeques or taking walks in the park, sun protection is always a good safety precaution. The following tips can help prevent common sun problems: Cover up and choose clothing that is loose fitting, tightly woven and lightweight to avoid sunburn. Wear sunscreen. You should choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. If you spend most of your day outside, use an SPF 30. Sunscreen should be placed on the ears, chin and neck even while wearing a hat. Sunscreen should be reapplied after extended wear. Plan activities outside of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when ultraviolet (UV) rays are most powerful. Choose su...

Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are advising Albertans, particularly seniors, that they can reduce their risk of acquiring West Nile virus (WNv) every summer by using simple preventive measures.Preventive measures should include wearing protective clothing like pants and socks, applying a repellant with DEET, reducing time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk, and reducing the mosquito habitat in the yard at home.&nbsp These safeguards can prevent bites from the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, the breed known to carry WNv in Alberta.
With people getting out and enjoying the warmer weather, Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are warning Albertans to be alert and take precautions against hantavirus.Hantavirus is a potentially-fatal infection acquired from contact with mouse droppings or urine. Albertans are advised to take special care when working or playing in locations that may expose them to rodents. While deer mice are the species most likely to carry the hantavirus, all signs of rodent infestation should be treated with caution. Infected mice are found in all regions of Alberta. This initiative adds significantly to the number of treatment beds for Albertans with alcoholism, drug addiction, psychiatric conditions or combinations of these challenges and increases access to full-time, longer term intensive programs for at-risk youth and young adults.&nbsp These beds are part of the continuum of services for individuals with mental health and addiction issues.
Alberta has confirmed the first death associated with the H1N1 flu, of a northern Alberta woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions.

It is not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the fatality, which took place April 28. The cause of death was at that time assessed to be linked to chronic pre-existing medical conditions. After confirming May 5 that another family member had contracted a mild form of the H1N1 virus, further testing on the deceased was ordered by local health care officials. Phase one of the strategy, announced in December 2008, includes establishing a single, government-sponsored drug plan, improving the transparency of the drug approval process, introducing a drug coverage program to help Albertans with extremely rare diseases, adjusting premiums for drug coverage for Albertans under 65 years of age who are registered with government's non-group program and redesigning drug coverage for senio...

The province has revised the proposed seniors’ drug plan to ensure it meets the government’s objectives of providing drug coverage that is affordable and predictable and supports those seniors who need it most.&nbsp Under the revised drug plan, the government continues to pay about 80 per cent of the costs of seniors’ drugs.

“Earlier this year, our government made a commitment to review the proposed seniors’ drug plan in response to feedback received from Albertans,” said Health and Wellness Minister Ron Liepert. “We listened to seniors and responded to their concerns.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

Proposed legislation that will allow health professional colleges to monitor and enforce their members’ compliance with professional standards of practice will help improve the quality and safety of Albertans’ health care. Bill 46, the Health Professions Amendment Act, was introduced in the Legislature November 6.

“Allowing colleges to actively monitor whether health professionals are following standards, rather than simply responding to complaints, just makes sense,” said Health and Wellness Minister Ron Liepert. “It will enable colleges to better ensure that health care services are being delivered safely and appropriately.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

The Alberta government is improving access to maternity services by bringing midwives fully into the publicly funded health system. Effective April 1, 2009, expectant mothers who choose to have their babies with the assistance of a midwife will have that service covered.

“This decision will provide better access and more choice for expectant women and will relieve pressure on doctors, nurses and hospitals,” said Alberta Health and Wellness Minister Ron Liepert. “Expanding the use of midwifery services will also help address the pressures on family physicians and obstetricians and meet the goal of introducing new service delivery models as outlined in the Health Workforce Action Plan.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

Alberta's first human case of West Nile virus (WNv) for 2008 has been confirmed in a male in his thirties from the Chinook region.&nbsp The infection, which has resulted in WNv non-neurological syndrome, was acquired while he was travelling in Saskatchewan.

“Although mosquitoes carrying WNv have not been found in the province this season, Albertans cannot let their guard down when outdoors,” said Dr. Gerry Predy, Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health. "This first confirmed case serves as a reminder that Albertans spending time outside need to wear mosquito repellent with DEET, as well as long sleeves, long pants and socks.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)
