For years it has been suspected that brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis, introduced diseases that are common in wood bison in Wood Buffalo National Park, also occur in bison immediately west of the park. Evidence of brucellosis exposure has now been detected in two bison about 20 km west of Wood Buffalo National Park. Hunters, ranchers, Métis Settlements and First Nations in the area will continue to be informed on risks of disease and future bison management.
A new web-based study that will document and track the experiences of Albertans who suffer from MS, in particular those who have had the Zamboni treatment or other similar procedures, is now up and running. Researchers at the University of Calgary and University of Alberta, along with experts from the Multiple Sclerosis community, have worked since December 2010 to put the study together. The Zamboni treatment, which is not approved for use in Canada, is being offered in other countries to treat chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). CCSVI is a syndrome associated with reduced blood drainage between the brain and heart that some researchers believe is linked to MS. (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

Albertans should take precautions against Lyme disease as ticks carrying the disease have been identified in the province. So far this year, 5 ticks have tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The ticks were found on 4 dogs and a cat. These pets live in the Calgary and Edmonton areas and the ticks were submitted by veterinarians to Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) for testing. A bite by an infected tick can cause illness in people, wildlife and domestic animals if the tick remains attached for longer than 24 hours.
Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health is advising Albertans to take precautions against Lyme disease as ticks carrying the disease have been identified in three areas of the province.Three ticks have tested positive for Borrelia, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. The ticks were found on dogs in the Calgary, High River and Ardrossan areas, and submitted for testing by veterinarians. Borrelia was first identified in Alberta in 2007, in ticks found on dogs in the Stony Plain area. A bite by an infected tick can cause illness in people, wildlife and domestic animals.
Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Health Services are urging Albertans to report any wild animal bites to their physician since wild mammals such as bats, coyotes and skunks may be rabies carriers. Over the last five years, a number of bats have tested positive for rabies in Alberta. Albertans should avoid any contact with wild animals, such as handling bats. If you see a bat in your home and you are sure no human or pet exposure has occurred, confine the bat to a room by closing all doors and windows leading out of the room except those to the outside. If the bat does not leave, it can be caught once it has landed, using the following precautions: Wear leather work gloves Trap the bat under a small box or coffee can Seal the bat in the can with a piece of cardboard Release t...

Keeping protected from the sun is essential for Albertans this summer as they enjoy time spent outdoors. Whether or not you are hosting backyard barbeques or taking walks in the park, sun protection is always a good safety precaution. The following tips can help prevent common sun problems: Cover up and choose clothing that is loose fitting, tightly woven and lightweight to avoid sunburn. Wear sunscreen. You should choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. If you spend most of your day outside, use an SPF 30. Sunscreen should be placed on the ears, chin and neck even while wearing a hat. Sunscreen should be reapplied after extended wear. Plan activities outside of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when ultraviolet (UV) rays are most powerful. Choose su...

This time of year generally sees a peak in food related illness, such as E.coli 0157:H7 more commonly known as “hamburger disease”, as Albertans are firing up the grills and heading out for family picnics. Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, advise that simple precautions taken before, during and after food preparation, especially with raw meats, can help prevent this disease from becoming a health problem.&nbsp While it’s called hamburger disease and generally associated with ground meat, the bacteria can be found in other foods, such as poultry or pork and even cheese, sprouts, lettuce, yogurt, and unpasteurized milk and fruit juices.
Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are advising Albertans, particularly seniors, that they can reduce their risk of acquiring West Nile virus (WNv) every summer by using simple preventive measures.Preventive measures should include wearing protective clothing like pants and socks, applying a repellant with DEET, reducing time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk, and reducing the mosquito habitat in the yard at home.&nbsp These safeguards can prevent bites from the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, the breed known to carry WNv in Alberta.
With people getting out and enjoying the warmer weather, Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are warning Albertans to be alert and take precautions against hantavirus.Hantavirus is a potentially-fatal infection acquired from contact with mouse droppings or urine. Albertans are advised to take special care when working or playing in locations that may expose them to rodents. While deer mice are the species most likely to carry the hantavirus, all signs of rodent infestation should be treated with caution. Infected mice are found in all regions of Alberta. “Earlier this year, our government made a commitment to review the proposed seniors’ drug plan in response to feedback received from Albertans,” said Health and Wellness Minister Ron Liepert. “We listened to seniors and responded to their concerns.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)
