National Lab Day is more than just a day – it’s a movement. NLD is bringing hands-on, exciting, and experiment-based learning to kids all over the country. NLD is the ultimate educational matchmaker. Teachers and educators can post a project on our website to request scientists, volunteers or even financial support (through Donorschoose.org). Research shows that play is essential to child development, and anyone who has watched a child enjoy the joy of pure play knows its value. But we take it for granted that kids have a chance to learn and practice healthy play. Too many kids grow up in neighborhoods that are not safe, and don’t learn conflict resolution so disputes stay on the schoolyard where they belong. For those kids, recess is more a battlefield than a playground. They teach kids how to play, lead games and resolve problems. The result is that recess is more fun and safe and the learning environment improves dramatica...

http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/summer/
Each summer, 18 million students are at risk of going hungry when the school year ends and school lunches are no longer available. For many children, school meals are the only complete and nutritious meals they eat, and in the summer they go without. This summer, the need will likely increase and rural communities are often underserved by the program. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) can help to fill the summer meal gap for low-income children. Faith-based, community, and private non-profit organizations can make a difference in the lives of hungry children by serving meals with SFSP, a federally funded program administered by states that reimburses organizations for meals served to children during the summer.

Older adults who have survived cancer can find out what to expect once treatment ends in Life after Cancer, the newest topic on NIHSenior Health (http://www.nihseniorhealth.gov/lifeaftercancer/toc.html). Visitors to the site will learn about managing follow-up care, physical and emotional changes, and relationships with family and friends. The topic also addresses how a person’s age and health status can affect recovery and survival. This is important information for older adults who make up about 60 percent of cancer survivors and whose cancer treatments may have been complicated by other aging-related health conditions.
Hesperian has assembled a Haiti Health Information wiki http://creole.hesperian.net/ on which, along with free downloads of emergency health materials in Creole, they have posted free downloads of Hesperian and MEDICC’s Health for All: 4-Language Glossary of Community Health Care Terms (Creole-Spanish-English-French). Florida’s individual public libraries provide a range of useful hurricane and disaster preparation and recovery services to their communities but their individual efforts are often isolated and unavailable to the rest of the library community. There has been no systematic effort to identify the roles, best practices, activities, tools and resources developed by local public libraries for their communities and to make them available to the larger library profession. All public library managers could help their communities respond better if they had the benefit of some portion of their fellow library managers’ disaster experience. This project will reduce the state’s overall risk by raising the capacity of all the state’s public libraries to me...

A public health emergency can strain the capacity of hospitals and other traditional venues for medical services. In such emergencies, it may be necessary to select alternate facilities for providing medical care. The report listed below, and the related interactive computer tools, will help institutions and communities select alternate care facilities and determine which patients to send to them. The two new interactive tools are Disaster Alternate Care Facility Selection Tool and an ancillary tool, Alternate Care Facility Patient Selection Tool.

http://www.heritagepreservation.org/PROGRAMS/TFlessons/MayDay.html
Every year cultural institutions across the nation set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay, a national effort to encourage disaster preparedness.
Just taking one simple step to protect the art, artifacts, records, and historic sites you hold in trust can make all the difference. Last year, cultural institutions updated disaster plans, held fire extinguisher training, and met with local emergency responders to ensure the future safety of their collections. New County Health Rankings Give First County-by-County Snapshot of Health in Each State
The County Health Rankings—the first set of reports to rank the overall health of every county in all 50 states—were released today by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The 50 state reports help public health and community leaders, policy-makers, consumers and others to see how healthy their county is, compare it with others within their state and find ways to improve the health of their community.
http://www.guttmacher.org/media/inthenews/2010/02/16/index.html
As the United States celebrates Black History Month, one enduring challenge we face as a nation is the persistent health disparities between black and white Americans. The area of sexual and reproductive health, in particular, is riddled with inequities, including differences in contraceptive failure rates, unintended pregnancy and abortion among teen and adult women, and rates of infection with HIV and other STIs among both men and women. While much progress has been made, our efforts and attention need to be directed toward equalizing health outcomes for all Americans. (Source: BHIC)

Christine Makosky Daley, PhD., MA, SM and Won Choi, PhD, MPH of the University of Kansas worked through the layers of barriers to create an effective smoking cessation program for American Indians, whose culture includes sacred rituals using traditional tobacco. Their program, All Nations Breath and Life (http://www.anbl.org), arose from a request from patients at an Indian Health Services clinic who asked for a novel smoking cessation program that was culturally sensitive to American Indians.
Millions of American Adults Not Up to Date on Needed Immunizations
http://www.rwjf.org/publichealth/product.jsp?id=55229
Too many adults in the United States are not up to date on vaccinations for seasonal flu, pneumonia, and many other preventable diseases, according to a new report by Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Adult Immunization: Shots to Save Lives attributes surprisingly low adult immunization rates in this country to barriers such as a lack of knowledge about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, limited access to health care providers for many Americans, and limited research and development of new vaccines.

The HOPE VI program did away with much of the nation’s worst public housing, but not all residents benefited. Many of the most troubled families — those with physical and mental health problems, weak employment histories, low literacy levels, drug or alcohol abuse troubles, criminal histories, and serious credit problems — have been left behind in the move to mixed-income developments or private-market housing. As the federal government, localities, and housing authorities seek to revitalize scarred inner-city neighborhoods, a unique set of responses is needed to aid public housing&#8217...

While this article was written for a library audience, the ten steps apply to anyone presenting to any group.
http://alalearning.org/2010/02/02/10steps/
Peter Bromberg writes: “If the goal of a library conference is that attendees will learn, what do conference presentations have to look like to achieve that goal? I believe the goal of presenting should be to create a change in the listener—a change of behavior, thinking, and/or feeling. Any good teacher or trainer will tell you that to be effective in creating that change, you must begin with the learning objective(s) in mind, and work backwards from there to design the lesson or the talk.”…

http://www.rwjf.org/pioneer/product.jsp?id=49988
This Web feature from the Pioneer Portfolio of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provides a research and policy overview of personal health records (PHRs) and related issues. The feature traces the history and development of PHRs and discusses their role within the larger health information technology arena. It also highlights a shift in emphasis from data captured in clinical encounters to patient-generated “observations of daily living,” which show strong potential to provide a fuller picture of people’s health and help them more actively manage their care—together with their providers—day in and day out.

As we are all watching the disaster and relief efforts unfold in front of us, I am surounded by colleagues in Boston attending the Americal Library Association. I learned of two tools created by libraries in Massachusetts to assist people in learning more about this effort. From the University of Massachusetts at Amherst comes the library guide “Disaster in Haiti” http://guides.library.umass.edu/haiti From Boston Public Library comes an informational page “Crisis in Haiti” http://www.bpl.org/news/haiti.htm With these two web pages, you can learn more about Haiti, stay up to date on the news about the disaster, and learn about legitimate ways to help.
