In accordance with last year’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, “The new standards make the same kinds of changes that many parents are already encouraging at home, including ensuring kids are offered fruits and vegetables every day of the week, substantially increasing offerings of whole grain-rich foods, offering only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties and making sure kids are getting proper portion sizes.”

Moderate caffeine intake associated with higher level for Asians, lower for whites
Asian women who consumed an average of 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day — the equivalent of roughly two cups of coffee — had elevated estrogen levels when compared to women who consumed less, according to a study of reproductive age women by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and other institutions.
However, white women who consumed 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day had slightly lower estrogen levels than women who consumed less. Black women who consumed 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day were found to have elevated estrogen levels, but this result was not statistically significant.
Total caffeine intake was calculated from any of the following sources: coffee, black te...

A newly published Data Brief from the National Center for Health Statistics showed several key findings:

More than one-third of adults and almost 17% of youth were obese in 2009–2010.
There was no change in the prevalence of obesity among adults or children from 2007–2008 to 2009–2010.
Obesity prevalence did not differ between men and women.
Adults aged 60 and over were more likely to be obese than younger adults.

This is a great time to highlight successful community prevention work in your community, and a strong op-ed is an excellent vehicle for elevating your story. Prevention Institute offers some tips on getting an op-ed piece published.

Due to a growing number of reports about improper use of insulin pens, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a reminder that the devices must never be used on more than one person.
Using insulin pens on more than one person puts people at risk for infection with blood-borne pathogens such as hepatitis viruses and HIV, which causes AIDS, the agency warns. Infection can occur even if an insulin pen’s needle is changed. http://bit.ly/ypsrBY [HealthDay] (Source: BHIC)

Tips To Fund And Sustain Your Health Programs For Older Adults

If you offer a community-based health program for older adults, funding is likely a continuing challenge. Too often, effective programs get off to a great start, only to fade away when the grant money runs dry. With the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, the National Council on Aging has compiled a valuable new guide that can help you keep your program strong. It includes lessons learned, tips, resources, and more. The report is focused on behavioral health programs, but can be applied to any program that’s in need of funding.

Asian-Americans More Apt to Die in Hospital After Heart Attacks

Asian-Americans are more likely to die in the hospital following a heart attack than whites, new research reveals, although this disparity was reduced over time in hospitals participating in a quality improvement program.
In the study, doctors examined certain measures of care — such as whether a patient was prescribed aspirin or ACE inhibitors (heart drugs) at the time of discharge — on 107,403 Asian-American and white heart attack patients. The study encompassed five years, from 2003 to 2008.
Asian-Americans were less likely to be given aspirin or counseling on how to quit smoking after they left the hospital. They were also more likely than whites to receive lipid-lowering therapy. http://1.usa.gov/A6Uxpx [MedlinePlus] (Source: BHIC)

The Department of Health and Human Services released a bulletin late last week outlining proposed policies that will give states more flexibility and freedom to implement the Affordable Care Act.
The Affordable Care Act ensures all Americans have access to quality, affordable health insurance. To achieve this goal, the law ensures that health insurance plans offered in the individual and small group markets, both inside and outside of the Affordable Insurance Exchanges (Exchanges), offer a comprehensive package of items and services, known as “essential health benefits.”

Important Gifts That Can Save Lives
Every year millions of American lives are disrupted by natural disasters ranging from earthquakes and severe storms to floods and wildfire. But all disasters large or small share a common theme, focusing attention on the importance of disaster preparedness and the critical need to take action before disaster strikes. The trick is to convert good intentions into good deeds, and according to FEMA there’s no time like the holidays.
Disaster-ready gifts can save lives, and are a wonderful way of welcoming in 2012. Helping to better prepare neighbors, friends and families for emergencies is a great way to say “I care.” Emergency and preparedness items that might make great gifts this holiday season include:

If your preschooler turns her nose up at vegetables, giving her a small reward for taking even a taste might help, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that when parents gave their 3- and 4-year-olds a sticker each time they took a “tiny taste” of a disliked vegetable, it gradually changed the preschoolers’ attitude.
After a couple weeks, kids rewarded with stickers were giving higher ratings to a vegetable they’d previously sworn off. On average, the vegetable moved up the scale from between 1 and 2 — or somewhere between “yucky” and “just OK” — to between 2 and 3 (“just OK” and “yummy”).
The children were also willing to eat more of the vegetable in taste tests in the lab.

The plant in Holly Springs, N.C., can create vaccine using cultured animal cells instead of the conventional process of using fertilized eggs. The facility is a public-private partnership of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, Inc. of Cambridge, Mass. This partnership will be maintained under contract for at least 25 years.

Hmm — turns out rats aren’t naughty, but nice! A recent study in Science shows they eagerly freed trapped cage mates. After that, they went even further, opening another restraint so that the two could share chocolate. Interesting!
Starchy Foods May Boost Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence
Increased consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods, especially starches, may boost the risk of breast cancer recurrence, new research finds.
Researcher Jennifer Emond, a public health doctoral student at the University of California, San Diego, looked at changes in the amount of carbohydrates, particularly starchy foods such as potatoes, that breast cancer survivors ate over a one-year period. Then she tracked the number of recurrences.
”Women who increased their carbohydrates and particularly their starch intake had a greater risk of recurrence than the women who decreased [it],” she said.

Severe winter weather can lead to health and safety challenges. You may have to cope with:

Cold related health problems, including frostbite and hypothermia
Household fires and carbon monoxide poisoning from space heaters and fireplaces
Unsafe driving conditions from icy roads
Power failures
Floods after snow and ice melt

Although there are no guarantees of safety during winter weather emergencies, you can take actions to protect yourself. You should have a disaster plan: http://1.usa.gov/POYNX.
‘TWAS THE NIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS
Author Unknown
`Twas the night after Christmas
And all through the kitchen
Little creatures were stirring up
Potions bewitching.
Salmonella were working
In gravy and soup
In the hopes they could turn it
To poisonous goop!
Clostridia were nestled
All snug in the ham
While Hep A virus
Danced in the Yam.
Little John and his Gobots
And Mary in her cap
Had just settled down
For a long overdue nap.
While down in their guts
There arose such a clatter
They sprang from their beds
To see what was the matter.
They ran to the bathroom,
Threw open the door!
Too late!
Now their mother
Is cleaning the floor.
Wash your hands before cooking
Put your food away quick!
Or that jolly old food germ
We know as Saint Sick
With his eight tiny microbes
Will ruin the feast.

Las week, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced policy changes designed to make it easier for health care providers and hospitals to qualify for meaningful use incentive payments.
Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health records can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.
To encourage greater participation in the meaningful use program, Sebelius said that health care providers who meet Stage 1 requirements this year would not need to meet the Stage 2 standards until 2014. According to an HHS statement, “Doctors who act quickly can also qualify for incentive payments in 2011 as well as 2012″ (Modern Healthcare, 11/30).

The gap between the least healthy and most healthy people has increased substantially among young American adults, new research suggests. Among those born early in the 20th century and on through the “baby boom” years (1946-1964), health disparities among generations continuously declined in the United States. But the health gap increased for post-baby boomers, especially those born after 1980, according to a report in the December issue of the journal American Sociological Review.
The study also found that health disparity trends tend to increase as people move into middle age, and then decline as they reach old age. The findings suggest that the disparity between the least healthy and most healthy people will increase for the next one or two decades as younger generatio...

In 2010, 50 percent of American adults sought information about a personal health concern, down from 56 percent in 2007, according to a new national study from the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC). The likelihood of people seeking information from the Internet and from friends and relatives changed little between 2007 and 2010, but their use of hardcopy books, magazines and newspapers dropped by nearly half to 18 percent.

Thanksgiving Day is also Family Health History Day. Since 2004, the Surgeon General has encouraged Americans to talk about, and to write down, the health problems that seem to run in their family. Learning about their family’s health history may help ensure a longer, healthier future together.

Banning sugar-filled sodas from American schools as an effort to combat childhood obesity doesn’t reduce overall consumption levels of sweetened beverages, research found.
In U.S. states that banned only soda, about 30 percent of middle-school students still purchased sugary drinks like sports and fruit beverages at school, similar to states that had no policy, according to a study released online today in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In states that banned all sugar-sweetened beverages, students still consumed the drinks outside of school, the researchers said. [Business Week] http://buswk.co/srKRBq (Source: BHIC)

Healthy Roads Media has posted Spanish versions of three new diabetes topics (Diabetic Eye Problems, Diabetic Kidney Problems and Diabetic Nerve Problems). These free materials are in both video (web-video and downloadable iPod video) and handout formats. They can be accessed for free at: http://www.healthyroadsmedia.org/topics/diabetes.htm or http://bit.ly/t793TP. There is also a new video format that can be used in closed-circuit television and/or video on demand systems (CCTV/VOD).
This webpage gives tips for safely disposing (getting rid of) needles and other sharp devices that are used outside of health care settings. Patients and caregivers should keep these tips in mind when at home, at work, and while traveling.
Sharps may be used at home, at work, and while traveling to manage the medical conditions of people or their pets. These medical conditions include allergies, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, infertility, migraines, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, blood clotting disorders, and psoriasis.
There are about 9 million Americans who use needles or other sharps to manage their medical conditions at home. http://1.usa.gov/vzKxSO [FDA] (Source: BHIC)

People who serve in the military and veterans face some different health issues than civilians. During wartime, the main health concerns are life-threatening injuries. These include shrapnel and gunshot wounds, lost limbs, and head injuries. Some service members might also have health problems from exposure to environmental hazards, such as contaminated water, chemicals and infections.
Service members and veterans are at risk for mental health problems, too. These include anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and substance abuse. http://1.usa.gov/11tS4w [MedlinePlus]

Over the past year, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has changed the way it administers the State Mental Health and Substance Abuse Block Grants. Beginning early last year, SAMHSA leadership started to look at the current and anticipated changes in the health care field, taking into consideration the changing roles of states, providers, and consumers.
As a result, SAMHSA made a number of significant changes to increase state flexibility and help prepare states for the expansion of health coverage in 2014. http://bit.ly/rVwR2O [SAMHSA] (Source: BHIC)

The first shoes with built-in GPS devices — to help track down dementia-suffering seniors who wander off and get lost — are set to hit the U.S. market this month, the manufacturer says. The GPS system, which is implanted in the heel of what appears to be a normal walking shoe, allows family members or carers to monitor the wearer and to set up a “geofence” that would trigger an alert if the person strays beyond a certain area.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week released final standards to more consistently measure race, ethnicity, sex, primary language, and disability status, thereby improving the ability to highlight disparities in health status and target interventions to reduce these disparities.
The standards, effective upon publication [October 31, 2011] , apply to health surveys sponsored by HHS where respondents either self-report information or a knowledgeable person responds for all members of a household. The standards will be used in all new surveys and at the time of revision to current surveys.
For more information on the final data standards, visit www.minorityhealth.hhs.gov/section4302. [HHS News Release, October 31, 2011] (Source: BHIC)

Nutrition Facts labels have been used for decades on many food products. Are these labels read in detail by consumers when making purchases? Do people read only certain portions of the labels? According to a new study published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, consumers’ self-reported viewing of Nutrition Facts label components was higher than objectively measured viewing using an eye-tracking device. Researchers also determined that centrally located Nutrition Facts labels are viewed more frequently and for longer than those located peripherally.
“The results of this study suggest that consumers have a finite attention span for Nutrition Facts labels: although most consumers did view labels, very few consumers viewed every component on...
