Adolescents and blood donation: motivations, hurdles and possible recruitment strategies.

DISCUSSION: The data collected regarding the three abovementioned areas of investigation (motivations, obstacles and recruitment strategies) were analysed with respect to gender. The results yielded some interesting information on which to build hypotheses concerning the pre-established objectives, including the importance of active involvement of adolescents by the organisations charged with promoting blood collection, emphasising the important role of the school and giving the adolescents the chance to meet with an expert on blood donation.

DISCUSSION: These results suggest that red blood cells stored in mannitol-adenine-phosphate are not significantly affected by helicopter transportation. The differences in haemolysis by the end of storage were small and probably not of clinical significance.

DISCUSSION: These results demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of our validation protocol. RHD typing on cell-free foetal DNA is a procedure which requires particular care and a great degree of expertise for diagnostic use. International collaborations are essential for monitoring the performance of laboratories in the absence of specific quality control programmes.

CONCLUSION: An UCB bank should store units of high-quality, in terms of the TNC count of units issued for transplantation, have a training programme to optimise the selection of donors prior to delivery, use similar volume reduction systems and homogenous recovery indices, express its indicators in the same units, use validated analytical techniques, and bear in mind ethnic minorities.

DISCUSSION: The patients were treated on an out-patient basis by a specifically created multidisciplinary team comprising a transfusion specialist, an orthopaedist and a radiologist, who collaborate in a symbiotic manner. The out-patient protocol exploits the regenerative properties of platelet-rich plasma, which is a low cost treatment; in practice, a diagnostic-therapeutic programme of lower intensity, but of high technical and professional quality is created. The strategy also reduces both the number of hospital services and the pharmacological support required, thereby optimising the use of health care resources.

In this study the Atreus 3C system was evaluated and compared to the routine method with regards to product quality and operational value. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a 5-week period 810 whole blood units were processed using the Atreus 3C system. The attributes of the automated process were compared to those of the routine method by assessing productivity, space, equipment and staffing requirements. The data obtained were evaluated in order to estimate the impact of implementing the Atreus 3C system in the routine setting of the blood centre. Yield and in vitro quality of the final blood components processed with the two systems were evaluated and compared. RESULTS: The Atreus 3C system enabled higher throughput while requiring less space and employee time by decreasing the amount of equi...

CONCLUSION: Blood donors who were involved in various forms of sexual risk behaviour represent a serious threat to the health of blood recipients. In this respect a new approach to blood donor screening procedure with additional questions on sexual behaviour in anonymous donor questionnaires would improve the safety of transfusion treatment in East Croatia.

CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the concordance between the values obtained with the two analysers was high for each of the parameters taken into consideration. In the case of haemoglobin and leucocytes, give the high intra-class correlation and lack of systematic overestimation of one method over another, the micromethod guarantees a correct evaluation; however, despite the high intra-class correlations for platelet counts, the systemic error seems to suggest that the micromethod cannot guarantee an appropriate evaluation of this parameter.

CONCLUSION:: In Iran, to improve cryoprecipitate quality, freezing should begin within 6 hours after donation and whole blood should be kept at 1-6 °C until the plasma can be frozen. In this study although a good correlation was seen between the results of the one-stage clot-based and chromogenic assays for measuring FVIII activity in cryoprecipitate, the absolute values were significantly different.

An estimate of future transfusion needs in the province of Ravenna made on the basis of Italian national statistics and past consumption.

DISCUSSION: It will, therefore, be the aging of the population that causes an increase in blood product requirements. Projections from the Italian Institute of Statistics considering age groups of the population up to 2051 enable predictions of transfusion needs, in the absence of drastic interventions on the appropriateness of transfusion practices. Considering that the public and private hospitals of Ravenna predominantly admit subjects from its own territory, these predictions appear realistic, provided that new reasons for consumption are not introduced.

CONCLUSIONS: The data collected in this survey are representative of the Italian national transfusion system. A re-definition of the authorisation and accreditation requisites for transfusion activities must take into account European and national legislation when determining these requisites in order to facilitate their effective applicability, promote their efficient fulfilment and enhance the development of homogeneous and transparent quality systems.

DISCUSSION.: Although many aspects of the blood transfusion process should be improved, the picture that emerged from the survey seems to show, on the whole, a fair quality of blood transfusion practice in Italian Blood Centres.

In this study we combined blood transfusion data obtained from the Blood Bank information system with patients' data from the Hospital Discharge Database, based on the ICD9 classification system, from 1,827 surgical procedures performed in seven different orthopaedic divisions in the Ravenna area between January and December 2009. Hip and knee replacement surgery (primary or revision) and operations following femoral fractures (partial hip replacement and reduction with internal fixation) were considered. For a subgroup of patients clinical and transfusion data were also combined with haemoglobin values obtained from the laboratory information system. RESULTS: Of the 1,827 surgical procedures, 1,038 (56.8%) were followed by transfusion of red cells. The likelihood of receiving a transfusio...

CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that strict observance of each of the checks and the collection strategy is important to guarantee the safety of the UCB units and to maximise the cost-benefit ratio. After the appropriate checks we banked UCB units from only 27.2% (162/595) of the couples who gave consent to the procedure and from only 11% (162/1,477) of all the deliveries in the 12 month study period, as 59.8% of couples were not properly informed about UCB donation.

CONCLUSION: The introduction of a malarial screening test in the assessment of blood donor eligibility may increase the safety of blood donations, but could further reduce blood availability. If immunological testing were to be accepted nationally as a valid method of assessing the risk of malaria, more than 90% of the donors who are currently deferred for 3 years could be accepted 4 months after their last visit to an endemic area, thus increasing the availability of blood.

CONCLUSIONS: The advantage of this new ASO-PCR method compared to a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) PCR method is that with the former all four genes can be amplified at the same time by PCR, and electrophoresis can be performed immediately to determine individual antigen profiles. The simplicity of the ASO-PCR method makes it suitable for routine use in medical centres and it is also cheaper than RFLP-PCR. Furthermore, as shown by previous studies, the results of haemagglutination and PCR tests often differ because the existence of donor red blood cells in the patient's circulation can interfere with the interpretation of the haemagglutination test.

Packed red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are often administered to patients in the neonatal intensive care unit. The purpose of this study was to determine whether current blood transfusion guidelines are as useful as care givers' perception in identifying patients in need of a packed RBC transfusion.

Storage of buffy-coat-derived platelets in additive solution: in vitro effects on platelets of the air bubbles and foam included in the final unit.

CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that storage with air bubbles/foam causes considerable enhancement of disintegration of platelets. In addition, various in vitro parameters of the platelets remaining seem to be negatively affected. The results of this study suggest that platelets should be stored without air bubbles/foam, given that these cause increased disintegration of platelets.

CONCLUSIONS: Although the use of platelet gel in the treatment of cutaneous ulcers is increasing, and conditions for its production are better standardised, very considerable variability of clinical outcomes is still observed, even within single centres, suggesting that there are differences in biological properties of platelet concentrates from individual patients which cannot be readily controlled with current techniques. The biological effects of the platelet gel supernatant described in this article may provide the basis for a simple biological validation of platelet preparations before their clinical use, so as to reduce this potentially important source of variability.

CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that anthocyanin extracts play a role in both stabilising the red blood cell membrane and inhibiting polymerisation of haemoglobin S. This provides a possible molecular basis for earlier reports on the anti-sickling properties of anthocyanins from some Congolese plants and their use in the management of sickle cell disease by Congolese traditional healers.

CONCLUSION: All patients showed good compliance, both because of the low frequency of medications (at most, twice a week) and because of the painless platelet gel applications. The only negative aspect was abnormal nail growth in a case of distal partial amputation of a finger. In conclusion, we believe that platelet gel can be very useful in patients with traumatic or surgical loss of finger tissue, since it can resolve critical situations thus avoiding amputation of residual tissue and compromised joint function.

CONCLUSION: The volume of red blood cell concentrate necessary to correct anaemia in pregnancies complicated by Rh isoimmunisation must be considered carefully, since the response to the infusion of blood is peculiar in extremely premature infants. Hydrops and the degree of anaemia were not determinants of the change in the final concentration of circulating haemoglobin following the blood transfusion.

The procedures for authorisation and accreditation of Transfusion Structures and blood donation centres: what are the requisites? The experience of the Transfusion Service and AVIS blood donation centres in Ravenna.

CONCLUSIONS: There are numerous, precise legislative and technical indications to guarantee the quality of performances in transfusion medicine, from the collection of blood to its allocation. These indications constitute a qualified basis for the development of accreditation models whose final validation is the duty of specifically designated regional and national institutions. The procedure for obtaining accreditation, planned and carried out uniformly by the Transfusion Service and the voluntary association's donation centres was an occasion for professional staff to improve the quality of the services delivered. Collectively, these aspects have increased transparency and improved the system of blood supply in the province of Ravenna.

DISCUSSION.: Overall there was close concordance between mouse, human and rhesus proteomes, confirming the unexpected RBC complexity. Several novel findings in the human and mouse proteomes have been confirmed here. This comparison sheds light on several open issues in RBC biology and provides a departure point for more comprehensive understanding of RBC function.

Influence of a light meal on routine haematological tests.

CONCLUSION: The significant variation of several haematological parameters after a light meal demonstrates that the fasting time needs to be carefully considered in order to interpret the results of haematological tests correctly.

Blood donation and blood transfusion in Spain (1997 - 2007): the effects of demographic changes and universal leucoreduction.

CONCLUSION: The increase observed in the RBC transfusion index after implementation of universal leucoreduction may have been due to a reduction of the haemoglobin content in the RBC units. Our data on blood use do, therefore, seem to add to the case against universal leucoreduction, which has led to an incremental cost for unknown, but probably slight, benefits for patients.

Blood components for topical use in tissue regeneration: evaluation of corneal lesions treated with platelet lysate and considerations on repair mechanisms.

CONCLUSIONS: The cornea reacts to damage by releasing numerous substances, including cytokines, growth factors, proteases and neuropeptides in order to restore its anatomical integrity. A change in the balance between inhibitory and stimulating substances can lead to the development of complications. Fast, correct re-epithelialisation is fundamental for the formation of new, transparent tissue. The use of non-gelified platelet-rich plasma was found to be effective in all cases with loss of epithelium, such as post-herpetic corneal ulcers or ulcers occurring following trauma or exposure to caustic substances.
